As a river guide and lifelong boater, I’ve found that few books manage to capture the raw kinetic energy of the river while maintaining a profound sense of introspection, but Peter Fox accomplishes exactly that in Let the Water Do the Work. Having personally rowed or been a passenger through several of the rivers he describes, I found his accounts to be breathtakingly authentic. I was easily transported back to those rivers, at times finding myself tensely speed reading just to see how he’d navigate the next move.

Peter perfectly captures the tension between a river’s immense power and the necessary respect and surrender a rower must find within it. Beyond the whitewater, the book is a beautiful meditation on effort, flow, and the wisdom we gain when we stop fighting the current—both on the water and in life.

As a petite woman who had to learn to row with the river to keep up with the boys, these lessons truly resonate with me. I credit the wisdom of my first teacher for my rowing knowledge and a deep love for sitting in a raft with an oar in each hand; Peter and I will always share that as our happy place.

An absolute must read for boaters and any lover of adventure. Do yourself a favor and read this book, I can’t recommend it enough!!

What I found most interesting were the deeply personal descriptions of experiencing the water from Fox's perspective, and the pseudo-spiritual attunement with concepts of fate and danger, but learning the history of running rivers was very enlightening as well. This is a book that lays all the dangers of the experience on the table and still makes me want to go do it anyway.
