Rodion wasn’t born evil; he hid his humanity. These were the parts of himself he separated from his identity because they felt unacceptable, probably due to his social status: jealousy, ego, manipulation, cruel fantasies, the desire to dominate, the desire to be worshipped, and the desire to be chosen over others.
He spent his life pretending these impulses didn’t exist, but repression does not destroy darkness; it buries it alive, and buried things influence behavior from underneath.
He had tried to confront his shadow, but he didn’t fully comprehend what he was capable of under the right conditions. His shadow became so denied that it leaked out.
He understood that morality is far more fragile than society admits. Place enough fear, humiliation, loneliness, or desire into a human being, and behaviors change quickly. History has already proven this repeatedly. Civilized people become cruel faster than they imagine.
That realization is uncomfortable because it destroys moral fantasy.
The fantasy that you would always do the right thing. The fantasy that awareness alone makes someone immune to darkness. It doesn’t. Awareness simply gives you a choice.
Human beings are far less rational than they pretend to be.
The ego will protect its self-image almost at any cost; Rodion wants to believe that he is good, so instead of confronting his darkness, he creates explanations for it.
The human mind is terrifyingly skilled at disguising its true motives, especially from itself. That’s why some of the most dangerous people are not the openly malicious ones. They are the ones completely convinced of their own innocence.
Rodion has deluded himself into the illusion that he is a brave man for killing, but in reality, he’s an imbecile for targeting vulnerable women.
He sees himself as being as stubborn and strong as Napoleon, but Napoleon fought against impossible odds, not fragile fawns.
He creates emotional chaos for Sonia as a way to soothe the emptiness he cannot face alone. And this is where the illusion of their relationship begins collapsing too, because their relationship is not built on love; it is built on an unconscious psychological contract. One needs emotional rescue, the other needs to feel needed.
