The Wombat Wingman

Rate this book
I came to Australia for a fresh start.
That wasn’t supposed to include getting chased around a bull’s paddock.
Or being rescued by a furious, devastatingly hot farmer.

Six months ago, my fiancé left, taking my honeymoon plans, my future and my ability to believe in a happy ever after. So the only sensible thing was to book a ticket to Australia from the US to go and work on a farm. New country. New life. No men.
Then I hit a wombat.
Trying to help lands me in a bull’s paddock, the beast about to charge, when Troy Drysdale vaults the fence, scoops me up, and carries me to safety like I don’t weigh a thing. He’s grumpy, inflexible, and very clear he doesn’t want an American complication on his farm.

Fine by me. I’m not here for love.
Even with a man who is fiercely loyal, dangerously protective, and looks at me like I’m already his. Men who don’t do feelings? They’re in my past, not my future.
Then Troy kisses me.

He says he’s not the kind of man who gets happy endings.
And he might be right.
The last time I asked a man to choose me left me at the altar. There’s no way I’m letting another man break my heart, not even a hot Aussie farmer. But that grumpy façade is hiding a man who’s determined to go after what he thinks is his.
And I might just let him catch me.

The Wombat Wingman is a MF romance between an optimistic American FMC and a grumpy Aussie male lead and is a standalone that ends in a HEA in this book. If you like a possessive male lead, cute furry animals and cute, fluffy, spicy romance, this might be the book for you

Australia always fascinated me. Its beauty, its animals, its critters, its MasterChef (the best one out there, I swear). I would love to visit one day, but for now this little cutie afforded me a glance into another part of Australia people don't really like to think about. The heat, the fires, the toll on people and especially animals. It's a love story, absolutely but not only is it about how a woman fell in love with a man, but how she fell in love with a country and maybe even herself again.

It's a wonderful heartwarming story with heat and heart and one stubborn little wombat.

Thank you Hambright PR and Sam Hall for the copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I went into this not knowing what to expect and came out completely charmed.

It’s more than just a romance, it really feels like a little window into Australia, both the beauty and the harsher realities. There’s a quiet emotional thread running through it too, with Mackenzie not just finding love but slowly finding herself again, which gives the story a gentle depth without ever feeling heavy.

Mackenzie and Troy are easy to root for, even if their dynamic takes a little time to fully settle in. Their relationship feels steady and sincere, built on small moments that slowly turn into something meaningful as they help each other grow. The family adds a lot of warmth and grounding, and the animals, especially Nugget, bring that light, slightly chaotic energy that keeps everything from ever feeling too serious.

It’s a mix of sweet, funny, and a little emotional, with just enough tension to keep things interesting without overwhelming the vibe. It might not be flawless, but it’s warm, a little messy, and very easy to love, and it left me feeling soft and oddly comforted.

If you’re in the mood for something cozy with a bit of spice and personality, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Mackenzie is recovering from the ending of a long relationship when she decides to go to Australia on a farm stay with a six month work visa. The Drysdales have a working cattle and wheat farm with a wildlife rescue…and Mackenzie finds herself being rescued by the eldest son, Troy, as soon as she arrives!

I loved the chemistry, the animals, the relationships. There was enough humor and seriousness to balance the story and keep the tension. I found myself rooting for both characters, so happy it was a light, fluffy story. There were moments of empowerment and healing throughout that were touchingly drawn. Consent was always clear. Big fan! I look forward to reading more of Sam’s work.

This was such a cute story! Grumpy x sunshine will always be a trope that I love. Troy’s family was so sweet, I really loved how the main characters understood each other. There were so many important lessons in this book that I enjoyed seeing play out. Seeing Mackenzie come out of her shell was beautiful to read!

Nugget was my favorite of course. How could he not be?

Thank you so much Hambright PR for the opportunity to read this one!

It’s flirty, funny, a little bit feral, and ridiculously easy to tear through. The kind of book you pick up for “just a chapter” and suddenly you’re emotionally invested in wombats and rural romance.

No thoughts. Just vibes and hot farmers. And honestly? Had a bloody great time.

I found myself reading this in an Australian accent and a smile. Mackenzie travels to Australia to get a reset on life after her fiance dumps her. Troy is a hot, grumpy, hard working ranch hand who is in no mood for hosting a seasonal worker.

Thank you to Hambright PR for a copy of The Wombat Wingman in exchange for an honest review.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! When I first started it I wasn’t sure it was for me but as I continued I fell in love with the characters and the story.

Mackenzie and Troy are absolutely adorable together. Their relationship is real and honest and healthy. They care about each other and that is obvious from the very beginning. I love that she teaches Troy that he doesn’t have to carry so much of the burden on his own and that he teaches Mackenzie that she deserves to be loved. Together they find a love that they both deserve.

Not to be outdone, the secondary characters are amazing and a big part of why I enjoyed this book. Charlie, Billy, and Bronson are lovable, loyal, and everything you could want in siblings. Their support of each other is really sweet to see despite the struggles the faced as a family.

And of course we can’t forget the wombat, Nugget! Him and all of his animal friends absolutely make this book. They are a lovely sweet reprieve when the book gets a bit heavy.

This book made me want to book a trip to Australia right now. If you love a good solid love story with grumpy sunshine, forced proximity, small town, and a nice dose of spice, give this book a read!

This was such a great book. It’s witty, funny and wholesome. Some parts will have you stressed out but only for a short moment.
Troy is a grumpy Aussie Farmer who lives every day looking after his family farm with his twin brothers Brunson and Billy and his sister Charlie runs a wildlife rescue for injured Australian animals.
Mackenzie is a bright American woman who went to Australia to work on Troy’s family farm to escape her old life in America and to find herself again. But little did she know, she’d find a whole new life in Australia with so many great adventures and opportunities!

If you’re looking for an Aussie Romance with some spice and that will have you laughing out loud, please pick up this book!

This one was such a fun, easy read for me. I flew through it.

Mackenzie basically runs off to Australia after her life falls apart and almost immediately ends up in the orbit of Troy—a grumpy, no-nonsense farmer and the chaos just unfolds from there. There’s forced proximity, small-town vibes and some really good banter which I was all for!

Troy is that classic gruff, protective type but you definitely see his softer side come through, which I loved. And Mackenzie brings that lighter energy while still figuring herself out, so they balance each other really well.

The chemistry is there from the start, but it’s not just instant…it builds into something a little deeper, which kept me invested. Plus the rural Australia setting and all the wildlife added such a fun touch.

If you want something light, a little spicy and easy to get into, this is one worth picking up.

Slight departure from the usual as it’s an MF romance, I’m so used to reading this authors RH books that I had a few moments of she gets all the brothers right? That said, Troy and Mackenzie are a great couple. They have instant chemistry, even though he’s a grump. He’s more a grumpy golden retriever, very lovable. The cast of characters are good and I’d be down for reading all the siblings getting their HEA’s. Troy really needed to open up to his siblings and Macca inadvertently forced him into. He’s always there for everybody and it was nice to see them step up to help him and themselves out. Mackenzie is a solid FMC, she’s mostly a positive person who’s been through it and working to get herself back.

Overall, fun and quick romance from an auto purchase author for me.

This book was such a fun read for me! I didn’t know what to expect going into it but I loved it!! All the characters were so lovable, and I have grown to appreciate the found family trope.

Sam did such a wonderful job writing this book in a way that I could understand a completely different world than my own. The cute animals and their names (nugget 🥹). The romance. His grumpy banter, mixed with her sunshine attitude. It all made for a wonderful story that I hope others will come to enjoy!!! 🩷

The Wombat Wingman by Sam Hall

Mackenzie decides to go to Australia on a 6-month work visa when her life is turned upside down. She's just hoping to get to work with cute animals. What she didn't hope for? The Drysdales, mainly Troy. He happens to be the most grumpiest grump ever and her new boss, against his wishes.

This is such a cute story! I'm a sucker for any animal stories, so the fact that they have a wildlife rescue made me love this one from the start. Then Nugget waddled onto the scene and stole the show and my heart! His antics are the best!

While this is a cute and easy read, it does touch on some heavier themes such as: parental death, parental illness, parental abandonment, domestic abuse, bush fires, and the resulting injuries to the native wildlife. Please check those triggers and protect yourself.

I received an ARC of this book, but these opinions are my own. I would like to thank the author, Sam Hall, and Hambright PR for allowing me the privilege of reading her work. ❤️

This was a really cute read. Everyone needs a wombat wingman 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ our FMC was likable, and our MMC was perfectly grumpy. This struck a good balance of cutesy and deep.

I will say, the bushfire stuff was a little heavier for me than I expected. Not too much so, and everything ended well enough, but I was like 😅😅😅 the whole time lol.

I would like to thank Hambright PR for providing me with a copy of this ARC. This review is entirely my own thoughts and is honest with no outside influence.

I picked this book because it felt intriguing and unexpected. I genuinely had no idea what to expect going in. I’ve always been curious about the creatures and critters of Australia, and this book didn’t disappoint. It gave me a small window into Australian rural life, centered around a farm and everything that happens around it. It felt so grounded and real that at times it genuinely felt like I was right there with the characters.

Now, Troy. Troy, Troy, Troy. You sweet gentleman. You are the perfect MMC. So vulnerable, such an overthinker, such a worrier, and someone who gives everything and more to the people in his life. I loved him for it.

The setting revolves around the Drysdale family home, a cozy house and outbuilding on a farm that also runs a rescue center. I really liked how the author wove in real-life issues like Australian heatwaves and bushfires, which are not talked about enough in fiction but added a lot of depth here.

There was a nice balance of humour and emotional depth. This book had laugh-out-loud moments while also handling heavier, more complex and traumatic topics. The leads were easy to root for, the writing was simple and accessible, and overall it was a cute, cosy read with a mischievous wombat pushing things along in the background.

This was my first book by the author, but I would definitely pick up more. I’ve already looked into her other works and have a couple on my list.
That said, there were moments where I felt like too many random facts about Australia were thrown in, and I did find myself googling things as I read. I didn’t mind it though, I actually had enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the first half more than the second, as the second half felt a bit rushed with a lot happening in a short span of time. I would have loved more everyday chaos with the wombats, joeys, and possums, and a bit more time with the siblings as well.

I’m always in for an intercontinental romance story, and this one made for a great read. I finished it in two days and had a lot of fun with it overall.

The Wombat Wingman by Sam Hall is a fantastic blend of laugh-out-loud humor, high-stakes drama, and "fish out of water" romance. If you’re looking for a story that combines the rugged Australian Outback with a literal animal matchmaker, this is a must-read.

The Setup:
Mackenzie James is looking for a fresh start after a breakup, so she heads to an Australian farm for work. Due to a name mix-up, the grumpy and overworked Troy is expecting "James Mackenzie." When a woman shows up instead—and immediately gets tackled out of a bull pen—Troy assumes she’s just another clueless tourist. He couldn't be more wrong.

Why I loved this book:
A Capable Heroine: I loved that Mackenzie actually knows her way around a farm! While the local environment is brand new to her, she’s an experienced farmhand who can hold her own. Watching her earn Troy’s respect while navigating the unique challenges of the Outback was so satisfying.

Nugget the Wombat: Nugget is the undisputed star of the show. From the roadside "meet-cute" to his talent as a local escape artist, he is the chaotic force that keeps Mackenzie and Troy in each other’s orbits.

The Full "Aussie" Experience: This book is such an immersive trip to Australia. You get the beauty of the landscape alongside the "terrors" of wildfires, kangaroos, and a giant spider named Bruce who definitely steals a scene or two!

Grumpy vs. Sunshine: Troy is laser-focused on keeping his family farm afloat and has zero patience for distractions. The chemistry between him and Mackenzie is electric, especially during a certain memorable "skinny-dipping" scene in the local mudholes.

The Heart: Beyond the humor and the heat, this is a story about family loyalty and finding where you truly belong. When a family emergency calls Mackenzie back home, the emotional stakes really hit high gear.

The Verdict: This is a perfect mix of sweet, steamy, and adventurous. If you want a romance with a lot of heart and a very cheeky animal sidekick, grab this one!

Sweet, fluffy and full of adorable Aussie men and marsupials? Lovely. This is a low angst romance that just leaves you feeling all warm and happy and checking your bank account to see if you might possibly be able to afford a trip Down Under.
Mackenzie has always been fascinated by Australia and its native animals. So after getting dumped by her fiancé, she gets a work stay on a remote ranch in Western Oz. There is an immediate spark between her and Troy, the eldest brother who runs the farm with a sweat, long hours and a flaming temper. He does everything he can to get rid of her, but it turns out Mackenzie is a natural in his sister’s wild animal rescue. The American girl finds out quickly that she loves everything about working with animals, life on the ranch, and the grumpy rancher with the weight of it all on her shoulders.
The chemistry between our main characters is easy to fall into. The descriptions of the baby kangaroos and possums, injured koalas and one cranky titular wombat made me want to spend my days surrounded by them and the 3 Hemsworth-esque brothers and their tough as nails sister. I enjoyed that the stakes in the book were real and as a So Cal girl the stress of the wild fires in the book was felt true to life. But the way Sam Hall writes kept the anxiety low and the warmth of her tone out weighed the harsh realities. I love that she doesn’t take herself or her beloved country too seriously, even throwing in a Crocodile Dundee joke or two. I am also a firm believer that not all spicy scenes are equal and I really like this author’s way of writing the sexy stuff.
This a great, easy read for anyone who loves a good romance and great setting with adorable animals. I really hope she continues writing about this family. I’d be happy to read a book about each of the siblings - or perhaps a Why Choose where the twins find one girl to fall for, since this isn’t my first book by this author and I know she does that very well.
Thank you to Hambright PR and Sam Hall for the opportunity to read and review an advanced copy of this book.

Quick Summary
This book hooked me from page one: a woman scorned, reclaiming her life, had me cheering. Mackenzie’s solo leap to a new country showed real grit, and I loved her fearlessness with farm work(except Bruce 😝). Troy was peak Aussie farmer: cranky, stubborn, then unexpectedly tender for Mackenzie…swoon. The romance was deliciously heated, the Aussie details spot-on, and the whole vibe made me giggle. Brilliant story, highly recommended. I’d reread it anytime and happily press it into friends’ hands.

While Reading Thoughts
📘This book had me from the start, I love a woman scorned and taking control of her life
📘Mackenzie was strong and brave to be traveling to a new country all by herself. I loved that she was not afraid of the farm work (except Bruce of course 😝)
📘Troy just screamed Australian farmer and he was like cranky and bullheaded but for Mackenzie he was soft and caring with a side of possessiveness- swoon.
📘The spicy scenes were thigh clenching and I devoured them.
📘Loved the Australian aspects of this book, it had me giggling and feeling right at home in the pages. This story was brilliant and recommend it

Am I here to tell you that Nugget the wombat deserves lots of snackies for being the most adorable & chaotic force in this heartwarming rom-com? Yes, yes I am. This little escape artist is equal parts cute & a menace because the roadside “meet cute” and his later shenanigans ensured that Troy & Mackenzie were brought together and stayed together! Do I want to head Down Under so I can let a wombat be my wingman to snag a grumpy, hot Aussie? Yup *pops p*

With the stress of running his family farm in rural Australia, Troy has no time for romance, and even less time for the reckless American who hit a wombat with her car, almost got impaled by his bull, yet is now living under his roof & working in his wildlife rescue. And Mackenzie? She’s in Australia to heal from heartbreak, not fall for the bossy & grumpy farmer who has a soft side that only she sees. But what if this summer fling isn’t just a fling?

I LOVED this grumpy-sunshine duo & their little wombat sidekick! Troy, the gruff & delectable farmer, didn’t stand a chance when he saw Mackenzie in danger in his bull pen – those protective instincts kicked into high gear & I was swooning! The banter between these two, as well as Troy’s family, had me giggling, and the adventures had me feeling like I was in the Outback. As Troy & Mackenzie's banter turned into full-on flirting, you could feel the heat between them – once that spark ignited, there was no turning back! When feelings developed on both sides, cue the *aww* moments, and when emergencies arise, the importance of family shines through and you can see the foundations of a true partnership & unwavering support.

Definitely recommend if you’re looking for a cute read with a cheeky little sidekick!

There are meet-cutes… and then there’s hit-a-wombat, trespass into a grumpy farmer’s land, and accidentally move into his life chaos. And somehow, The Wombat Wingman makes it feel like the most natural love story in the world.

This book is pure sunshine-meets-storm energy with a side of dust, heat, and heart-melting tenderness.

Troy Drysdale? Certified grump. The man communicates in grunts, orders, and brooding silence… until you realize he’s out here rescuing wildlife, bottle-feeding joeys, and quietly caring in ways that hit way harder than words. He’s the kind of hero who doesn’t just fall—he claims, and when he finally lets himself love? Devastating in the best way.

And Mackenzie? Absolute chaos pixie with a bruised heart. She’s funny, stubborn, and trying so hard not to need anyone again… which of course makes her the perfect match for a man who doesn’t know how to do anything halfway.

Their chemistry? Immediate. Explosive. The kind that simmers under every argument and stolen glance until it finally snaps. The tension builds like a summer storm in the Outback—heavy, electric, impossible to ignore.

But what really makes this story shine is its softness tucked inside the spice. Beneath the banter and heat, there’s healing. Two people who weren’t looking for forever slowly realizing they’ve found something that won’t let them go.

And let’s not forget the true MVP: the wombat wingman. 🐾

Read this if you love:
• grumpy x sunshine done right
• forced proximity with bite
• protective, slightly possessive heroes
• small-town vibes with big feelings
• animals that steal the show
• spice that comes with emotional payoff

This book feels like sun-warmed skin, red dirt under your boots, and a kiss that lingers long after the last page.

Consider me emotionally relocated to rural Australia. 🌾💛

The start of this book does admit to being a light, fluffy read and not always accurate, and you do have to go with that.
At the start the American MC used Aussie vernacular, which was odd as she’s supposed to arrive and be floored by it all. It seemed more like the author just got in the flow of how the rural Australia dialogue was supposed to sound in here and applied it liberally. It’s very much a stereotype and exaggerated (I am Australian, so I do feel qualified to say that) but it’s also not going that far beyond real. It’s almost a parody, and I feel I would enjoy this more if I wasn’t Australian.
I found it wild that this book mentions the emu war but leaves out the best bit. Like, this is legitimately a hilarious tale. It’s just kinda thrown out and ignored and there were a lot of similar moments where it felt like it needed to be truly explored instead of just pushed in without context. So many random facts just told to you and it all makes it feel very surface level. It tells you there’s a heatwave, but you don’t feel it. There’s no mention of sweat, of the baking sun, of your energy being drained the longer you’re outside. How your eyes feel dry as the air sucks any moisture it can find. Again, cute and fluffy, insta lust, but not much development elsewhere.
There’s a scene near the end that is meant to be the whole full-circle moment, but it just made no sense for either character to suddenly act opposite to how they’d been for the rest of the book.
I did enjoy the first half more than the second, and it’s fine for a switch off read if you’re not after anything deep.

The Wombat Wingman by Sam Hall is cozy, chaotic, and unexpectedly heartwarming — and I devoured it way too quickly.

❥ He Falls First & Harder
❥ Grumpy x Sunshine
❥ Forced Proximity
❥ Found Family
❥ Curvy FMC
❥ Dual POV
❥ Small Town / Farm Life

As a Canadian who travelled to Australia and fell in love… this one hit very close to home for me 🥹

Troy and Mackenzie had such a fun, natural chemistry. Watching Troy’s gruff, blunt personality slowly soften around her? Elite. He didn’t stand a chance — and honestly, neither did I.

And the Aussie elements? Obsessed. The creatures, the slang, the nicknames… and BRUCE?? I was laughing out loud. It added so much charm and made the whole story feel vibrant and alive.

I also really enjoyed the depth in the plot. From Mackenzie’s reason for returning home, to the farm’s financial struggles, to the wildfire and the choices that forced these two closer together — it all felt grounded and real. The stakes weren’t over-the-top dramatic, but they were meaningful, and it made their connection feel stronger because of it.

That said, the pacing did feel a little jumpy at times. There were moments where I felt fully immersed in a scene, only to turn the page and feel like I’d missed something. I found myself backtracking a few times, only to realise it was just a time or sequence jump that didn’t flow as smoothly as it could have.

Still, it didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed the story overall.

This was spicy, addictive, and full of heart — the kind of romance that feels both comforting and exciting all at once.

After being left nearly at the altar, Mackenzie James is looking for a fresh start. Six months after her life was turned upside down, she's headed to Australia to work on a family farm. With a completely new environment, new people, and a departure from her normal work, she's excited to see what the next six months have in store for her. Soon after arriving, she hits a wombat (yes, really) and unexpectedly meets her new boss, Troy Drysdale, while being rescued from the family bull (again, yes, really!). The wildlife isn't going to be the least of her worries, but Troy will. Troy falls hard and fast, upending Mackenzie's plans for her time Down Under. Although she swore she wouldn't let another man break her heart, she can't resist Troy and his grumpy charm.

This was so cute! The book was super fast-paced and kept my interest from the very first chapters. I loved having a curvy FMC and a MMC that fell first. Also, all of the cute animals you get to envision? Sold! The book also touches on some serious topics as well - family illness, past traumas, and natural disasters. I enjoyed having a "dose of reality" while reading, not just everything revolving around their happiness the entire time. I would love to see more books in this universe, especially a book that allows Charlie, Troy's sister, to experience her own happily ever after (and not even romantically). This romance would be great if you enjoy cowboy romance, lightly spicy books, or books with lots of cute rescue animals! You won't want to put it down.

Thank you to Sam Hall and Hambright Marketing for a copy of this book. I received this ARC for free and am leaving a review voluntarily.

I have become such a huge fan of Sam Hall’s writing! The Wombat Wingman is a cute contemporary romance with a medium amount of spice (3 🌶️).

Mackenzie is pulling herself back together after her fiancé (who was also her childhood best friend) jilts her 2 weeks before their wedding. Mackenzie wallows and wallows some more then decides she will wallow no more! And haul her ass all the way to Australia despite her moms pleas to stay closer to home, not on the underside of the world.

The adventure starts off quickly with Mackenzie quite easily finding a wildlife refuge to work on. Troy, the bloke running the place at first doesn’t want another set of helping hands on the ranch but quickly changes his mind when the town douche tries to smear his slimy hands on Mackenzie and have her work for him for all the wrong reasons.

The animals on the refuge were all so fun to read about! I REALLY feel more interaction with the animals was greatly needed! When I find a book making me wish I could dive in, which Sam Hall is AMAZING at doing, I can’t put it down. I would have loved more happenings and shenanigans with the wombats and possums. Even the joeys! Instead it just felt a little rushed. She gets there, quickly meets the animals, there’s some conflict then the spice which also felt a little rushed but was still good, and then more conflict and it ends. I loved the redemption trope at the end with Mr ex fiancé. That was quite satisfying.

Would I recommend? Sure! But I’ll mostly be sticking with her romantasies!

Thank you Hambright PR and Sam Hall for this opportunity in exchange for my honest review!

This read was so much fun with the American Woman x Australian Man aspect, the two cultures facing head to head in a brewing romance made for such a cute story!🤍

Mackenzie (fmc) recently had a messy breakup in the states, so she decided to travel to the land down under for a few months to work on a large farm and get over her sadness. When she gets there, first thing she does is hit the farms precious wombat, Nugget, with her vehicle! Don’t worry though, he was okay, it was just a tap. While this whole situation is unfolding, Troy (mmc) discovers what just occurred and makes his grand entrance. What a not meet-cute.

These two fall for one another pretty quickly, it’s not much of a slow burn at all. Mackenzie & Troy hit it off and make it known that they want one another, but they’re unsure how it’ll work since she lives across the world. Suddenly, her mother is hospitalized and she has to head home…but he follows her!😭

I loved how passionate Troy was for Macca, he was not ashamed to show her love whatsoever. He especially appreciated her curves, which was one of my favorite parts throughout the book. & he was not going to let her leave without him there with her! what a mannnn 🤩

This book was incredibly cute, and Nugget’s reappearance through the story was always such a funny comedic relief. The darker themes such as the forest fires were difficult to read at times as I am an animal lover, but I know it’s unfortunately a very real scenario. It was all very well done & definitely shed light on the scary forces of nature that we cannot control!

This was a spicy read but there was so much yearning & love as well. Also definitely check trigger warnings before reading!

THE WOMBAT WINGMAN by SAM HALL ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Escaping her misery after a broken relationship, Mackenzie James decides to travel to Australia on a working visa, looking for a fresh start.

She encounters her new ‘Boss’ Troy Drysdale when he rescues her from a ferocious bull, an inauspicious meeting that doesn’t go well. So much for a good introduction to her new life.

But as time goes on and Mackenzie settles into her new routine, her relationship with Troy starts to progress. However, she’s only in Australia for 6 months, will she be able to move on when her stay is over?

————————

This was my first book by Sam Hall and it was a lovely introduction to this author.

The Wombat Wingman was an interesting story with good descriptions of Australia, its native animals and the lifestyle.

I found this book very funny in places, though there are also some very traumatic issues covered too. It highlights the difficult issues experienced such as drought, animal husbandry in a hot country, isolation etc.

I enjoyed the interesting side characters, both human and animal, with some funny encounters. I would have loved to have learned more about Troy’s siblings.

There is a lot of open door spice, to be honest too much for my personal taste but it didn’t stop me reading and enjoying this book

With thanks to Sam Hall and Hambright PR for a chance to read this interesting book.

❤️ Blurb -
Six months ago, my fiancé left, taking my honeymoon plans, my future and my ability to believe in a happy ever after.

Firstly the cute cover caught my attention but when I started reading I knew that I would love the story too. It was such a cute and fun read. The story was easy to follow, had good pacing and a great cast of characters. Plus I loved the place settings in the story. I highly recommend it and I look forward to reading more by the author.

Troy Drysdale is a grumpy farmer who’s in charge of the family farm in rural Australia. He doesn’t have time for romance or the American backpacker who hit their pet wombat, barged into his bull’s field, and into his family’s life. Living under the same roof as Mckenzie is going to drive him crazy.

Mckenzie James is trying to heal from the hurt and pain from her past relationship. She wasn’t expecting to fall for her handsome gruff boss. Underneath his rough exterior is a kind, compassionate man who will do anything for her. What will the future hold for them?

I thought this book was so cute! It was very heartwarming and gave me all the feels. I loved all the tropes: The found family, he falls first, grumpy x sunshine, and the bonus of a rascally wombat as the comic relief. This was such a good time read for me.

Troy has been shouldering all the weight of his family’s problems. He feels like it is his burden alone and doesn’t confide in anyone. No wonder this man is a total grouch!

Mackenzie is the sunshine to Troy’s grump—a breath of fresh air. She is kind, a hard worker, stubborn, and most importantly puts Troy in his place. Not only does she fall for him, but his family, and his animals too.

This was such a pleasant palate cleanser from some of the darker books I tend to gravitate towards. Highly recommend if you’re looking for an easy, fun, and hot (literally and figuratively) adventure in Australia. Thank you @samhall and @hambrightpr for this gifted copy. This is my honest review.

The Wombat Wingman by Sam Hall is the kind of book you pick up for a fun escape and end up completely obsessed with it. From the first chaotic, laugh out loud moment (yes, the bull paddock scene) to the swoony, tension filled romance, this story had me hooked!

The chemistry between Mackenzie and Troy is everything. He’s the ultimate grumpy, protective Aussie farmer. Closed off, intense, and absolutely gone for her even when he doesn’t want to be. And watching her, with all her heartbreak and determination to start over, slowly break down his walls? So satisfying. The push and pull, the banter, the undeniable tension… it’s chef’s kiss.

I loved how this story balances humor, heart, and heat. One minute you’re smiling over a wombat mishap and then you find yourself deep in emotional territory, rooting hard for two people who are both terrified to risk their hearts again. And when the spice hits? It delivers.

Troy is the kind of possessive hero that I live for, but there’s also so much depth to him beneath that gruff exterior. And then Mackenzie’s journey to finding her strength and maybe love again, felt so genuine and empowering.

If you love:
💛 Grumpy x sunshine
💛 Protective, possessive MMC
💛 Small-town/farm vibes
💛 Forced proximity with sparks flying
💛 Humor + heart + spice

…then this book is 100% for you.

Sweet, spicy, emotional, and ridiculously fun The Wombat Wingman gave me all the feels and left me smiling even after the last page. Thank you @samhallauthor & @hambright_pr for this ARC! 🩵

When I saw the title for this book, I had an immediate “What in the world…” thought, immediately followed by the feeling that I absolutely NEEDED to read this book. My inner mood reader rarely steers me wrong, and ol’ girl was definitely right this time!

The FMC, Mackenzie, is heading out for a post engagement breakup bucket list adventure working on a farm in Australia. Deep down she knows she needs to change something and find herself, and she hopes to figure that out on a trip down under. Her adventure takes a little turn when a meddling wombat gets involved.

Troy is carrying the weight of the world on his farm-honed muscled shoulders. He has absolutely zero desire to have a seasonal worker on the farm, much less an American “tourist,” despite his instant attraction to Mackenzie. He feels responsible for everyone and everything on the farm, and he doesn't want to deal with it. He quickly finds himself feeling protective over her though, and grudgingly accepts her presence.

Throughout the story, Mackenzie and Troy develop a really lovely and healthy relationship built on respect and care. While he’s grumpy at times, Mackenzie takes it all with a smile and determination to prove herself, eventually showing him that he doesn’t have to carry so much alone. Watching them find pieces of themselves while healing a piece of the other made it an amazing read. It was such a natural give and take between them.

Overall, it was a cute book, easy to read (more like devour), full of heart, and lots of incredible (but realistic) insights into life in Australia.

A special thank you to the author and Hambright PR for an advanced reader copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

This is my honest review!

I went into The Wombat Wingman thinking “aww cute animals and a grumpy farmer" and came out emotionally attached, slightly feral, and googling flights to Australia

Mackenzie really said “I’m healing” and then immediately ran into chaos literally. From wombats to bulls to snakes!! This girl cannot catch a break, But I loved her. She’s sunshine in human form, a little reckless, a little chaotic, but so easy to root for.

Now Mr. Troy!! Excuse me sir!
Grumpy, bossy, protective farmer who barely talks but somehow says EVERYTHING. The man relocates spiders, bottle-feeds baby animals, and still has the audacity to be intimidating. "Oh be still my heart, the man we are all looking for" not the teenage love. The man who will always stay and stand by us.

The vibe of this book is cozy chaos. One minute you’re smiling at cute animals, the next you’re stressed about survival in the Australian wild, and then BAM!! you’re blushing because the tension just hit. Sizzling!!

The romance builds in that soft, sneaky way where suddenly you realize, oh no, I’m invested. when it hits, It HITS. Emotional, tender, and just enough spice to keep things interesting.

Also, I was not prepared to feel things at the end. Like excuse me!!

If you love:
✨ grumpy x sunshine
✨ protective, low-key possessive MMC
✨ small town / farm vibes
✨ cute animals + chaotic wildlife
✨ cozy but spicy romance

Yeah… this one’s a whole experience!
