Greg Heffley is facing his biggest challenge yet, and this latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid adventure was another fun, entertaining read! I love how Jeff Kinney tackles relatable school issues like bullying and friendship while keeping readers laughing with Greg’s hilarious antics. I love how they related the animal kingdom to his real drama. The Wimpy Kid series continues to be a fantastic way to get kids excited about reading!

As a school librarian, I will definitely be adding Fight or Flight to my school library as soon as it comes out on October 20! I know my students will be excited to get their hands on the newest book in this beloved series.

I received an ALC through NetGalley, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
If you are a fan of the series then this is a must-read!
It has been some years since I read a Diary of The Wimpy kids book. I saw it on NetGalley and just knew I had to request it, and I am so glad I did! This was a very humorous read and I really felt the nostaglia.

Boy am I glad I am not Greg! Having to deal with so many bullies that he needs to create a secret club (1 tactic of many) just to try avoid them can not be fun. Greg gets up to all sorts in this book, he had me chuckling every few seconds 🤣.

Audiobook: Roughly 1½ hours in lenght. The narrator did a good job voicing Greg. I had fun trying to visualise the drawings in the book, I did not feel I missed out by not being able to see them.

Great additions to the series. It just amazes me how I have read Homer, Fyodor Doesteosky ect, yet I still love these books. Cannot wait for the new movie this year and the next addition to the series which will release next year

9/10

This was a really good Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
The only problem with this book is that it was not as funny as the previous ones.
would be 10/10 if it had more jokes.

But other than that i highly recommend this book to anyone who has read and enjoyed a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book.

I've been reading this series for years now… and I still enjoy it. This installment is about bullying. Greg makes some dossiers for the bullies at his school. He accidentally switched binders with a teacher, now the dossiers are in the hands of the principal. Because of that, Greg is at risk of getting in trouble with the bullies for snitching.

Personal Rating: ⭐3/5

Note: Using new rating system starting 2025.

I don't yet own a copy of the book but I was lucky enough to find a video on youtube where all the pages where available and for the first time ever I read a book from cover to cover on youtube haha here's the link: https://youtu.be/7WWDFfDfbLE?si=wWIT8... I'll buy a copy of this one during the Malta book festival of 2026.

This one wasn't bad at all although I was rather surprised to see how much Greg has actually matured in comparison to previous books. To be fair, he is still insanely unreasonable and wimpy but he now reads for leisure and creates profiles for all the bullies in his school. If he were to spend the time doing his homework instead he'd be much better off in life than he currently is. The story revolves around Greg dealing with the bullying situation at his school to a point where even minor infractions are considered as bullying by Greg to the point of unreasonableness much like chewing loudly. It comes to a point where Greg himself becomes the bully and quite expectedly so, he reels Rowley into it as well. Rowley does practise karate but he's horrible at it and Greg genuinely thought he had a bodyguard in his "best friend". I do think of Greg as the most psychotic and self-centred character in this series and I enjoyed how towards the end, the bullies all seemed to have a change of heart since they were simply misunderstood characters. Then again, if we were to analyse this series from a more meta perspective it could mean that Greg was simply too afraid to write anything about the bullies anymore and only drew them in a positive light. If what Greg says about how his school takes care of the bully situation is to be believed, then the school should be ashamed and sued. As a teacher myself, such behaviour from a school is embarrassing but then again it's an American school so the fact that nobody got shot says a lot.

Greg writes about how he's at the bottom of the pecking order and how he consistently tries to shield himself from bullies since there are many predators out there. This was a quick and enjoyable read and certainly had more of the wimpy sense to it than most of its predecessors but it's certainly a shame that we hardly got anything about his parents, Rodrick, or even characters which were so beloved in the first few volumes like Patty Farrell or Chirag Gupta. Greg certainly seems to be maturing in some way or another but keeping these journals as infantile as possible perhaps for nostalgic reasons or because he wants to sell the wimpy brand. I enjoyed how much of Jeff Kinney's own life actually shone through this read and how much he's trying to use modern language like "cooked" or "cooking" in the context which middle-schoolers use it in. This was a fun read but it's clear that there's something wrong with the society that Greg forms part of or perhaps Greg's perception of how cooked the society he forms part of is wildly exaggerated. Everyone was finally able to realise that Greg was the instigator behind all the fighting and he somehow managed to take accountability through his writing of this journal.

I listened to a little of this audiobook, but the real reviewer in our house is my 9-year-old daughter, who listened to the entire thing in one sitting. I asked her to share her thoughts afterward, and this review is based on what she told me.

Her first description was that Fight or Flight is a "very busy book" with lots of crazy things happening. She especially liked how Greg deals with bullying throughout the story. He remembers different times he's been bullied and has to figure out what to do about those situations. At one point, he even considers fighting back with his fists, although she was pretty sure he didn't actually go through with it.

The part that stood out most to her involved Greg's binder, where he keeps track of what the bullies have done, and the principal eventually calling out the bullies one by one. She loved how that situation played out.

When I asked her for a rating, she said 4.5 stars, as she explained, "There are some other books that are crazier than that." She specifically mentioned The Deep End and its flood as an example of the kind of chaos she loves in this series.

So we're settling on 4.5 stars. She thought it was "super good," even if it wasn't quite her favorite Diary of a Wimpy Kid adventure.

As a parent, I love finding audiobooks that keep my kids so engaged that they want to listen straight through. This one certainly accomplished that. My daughter was also very excited she got access to the book before her friends since it was an advanced reader copy from NetGalley!

these books have definitely declined in quality over the years but greg's mix of being deeply insecure and shamelessly and malevolently lame as shit is still pretty funny

"i've read that when an animal is backed into a corner, it has to decide between 'fight or flight,' which means it has to deal with the threat or try to escape. but that's not a hard choice for ME, because i'm choosing flight every time."

OK, in for a penny, in for a pound as they say. I've reach each of these in the series. Why? I've been around the sun 80 times and still getting my jollies from an illustrated story about middle school? Maybe because it takes me back to those days when the world was more of a mystery, maybe it reminds me of what those years were like, maybe it appeals to my sophomoric sense of humor, a bit of which still remains. At any rate, a quick, interesting, fun read. I don't care how old you are!

Thank you NetGalley for the ALC. I do listen to this series because my nephew likes them and we can talk about them.
It’s a short but funny book as all the rest of the books but it also brings up an important topic of bullying.

And the narrator…so good!!!

I'm giving this one star based on the simple fact that this is book #21 in a series based upon a kid being "wimpy" and all this book focuses on is him being bullied. I mean hasn't that been the premise for 20 other books? I've been saying it since book 6, enough already, come up with something new. Especially since it really feels like you're stretching for ideas at this point.

If you want to know what goes on in the book, complete with spoilers, read on. If you want to be surprised, don't! I read this VERY quickly, so if I makes mistakes with names or events, please feel free to correct me.

After years of bullying his best friend, Rowley, Greg is suddenly concerned about being bullied himself. With bullies like Zander "Z-Rex" Wrexham roaming the hallways, he develops elaborate plans for survival, with flight always being his reaction. Greg isn't the most bullied kid in the school; that honor belongs to Jarrett Jollifee. Greg plots out all of the doorbell cameras in his neighborhood, pretends to talk on a cell phone so no one bothers him, and even hides an emergency "go bag" in the ceiling tiles in the boys' bathroom, just in case he needs to leave the country. You'd think antibullying month at school would help, but it doesn't, and Greg's mom is embracing the philosophy that he needs to learn to problem solve on his own, so she's no help. Greg does have a few other concerns; Mr. Finch and Miss Starling are dating, and he often carries notes to Miss Starling; he and Rowley play Magick and Monsters, a Dungeons and Dragons type game where Rowley is Targor Ironhide, a dwarf warrior; and he thinks a lot about animal adaptations and how he could change his ways to better survive. He starts keeping a notebook of all of the bullies in school, their strengths and habits, and details about when they bully others. Greg also gets involved in a birding club, but tries to talk them into watching for bullies instead. This is briefly successful until Mr. Finch and Miss Starling get involved as advisors and plan a field trip to a bird sanctuary. When Greg accidentally switches binders with Mr. Finch, things get interesting. The binder is turned over to the principal, and kids get called down to the office and put into detention. Greg doesn't want the bullies to connect him to the binder, so gets himself sent to the principal for chewing gum and gets his binder back. He recycles all of the pages in the office, but when the recycling is emptied, pages blow everywhere. The bullies try to locate the "Snitch", and Greg is so afraid that he even tries karate lessons but is quickly kicked out. Z-Rex hires Greg to investigates the identity of the Snitch, but Ryland (another bully) hires Alex, and when the bullies think that ROWLEY is the snitch, a fight is planned between Z-Rex and Rowley. Everyone in school shows up to the stadium, and Rowley chickens out at the last minute, leaving Greg in the line of fire. Luckily, Rowley literally throws a towel at Z-Rex, taking him down just long enough for the Birding Club to arrive to save the day. Jarret gives a speech about kindness, and everyone thinks he is a hero. Mr. Finch and Miss Starling get married, and the school culture changes. The bullies have nothing to do, so Greg reads them picture books at recess, and everyone lives happily ever after.
Strengths: This seemed a little different from the other installments in that there were a lot of characters and plot points that ended up being picked up later in the story and being important. Most of the time, something like Rowley having a character named Targor would be mentioned once and never brought up again, but it's the one thing that ties him (and therefore Greg) to the notebook. Jarrett and his Kindness Klub are mentioned early on, and then really take over the end of the book. There was even a clever bit with Mr. Finch and Miss Starling being the Birding Club advisors. There's still a lot of random events thrown around, but children seem to love this non sequitur, anecdotal style. We don't see too much of Greg's family, which helps focus the story on school events. Greg is portrayed as a little less psychopathic, and even seems to have picked up a reading habit. Most of all, Greg's adventures don't seem to repeat themselves and still feel fresh. There's also a shout out to Tarshis' I Survived series with a made up series Greg enjoys called "I Ran Away From...".
Weaknesses: Are there still antibullying initiatives in schools? Yes. But real bullying isn't so much wedgies and stealing lunch money as it is nasty whispers. There are several other things that don't seem realistic, like cameras in classrooms and parents attending school with their children, Greg getting sent to the principal for chewing gum, and teachers being prohibited from dating. There's a huge crowd for the fight on school grounds? Are these ideas funny? Sure. The beginning of the book is extremely frenetic, but things do settle down into something that almost resembles a plot for a bit.
What I really think: The Wimpy Kid books are all the proof we need that I am not ACTUALLY a twelve year old boy. I don't really enjoy them at all, but I am not the target demographic. Actual tweens still love these. Because I won't have a copy for a while, I told my sixth grade classes how to check the book our from the Ohio Digital Library, and a half dozen got out their Chromebooks and checked out copies on the spot!

Greg Heffley is back, and in true Greg fashion, what starts as a seemingly good idea quickly turns into a hilarious mess!

When Greg's middle school decides to take a stand against bullying, Greg takes matters into his own hands by creating a binder documenting the school's known bullies, their preferred methods of tormenting others, and even their usual locations. Sounds like a pretty smart idea, right? Well, not when you're Greg Heffley!

Things take a turn when Greg accidentally leaves his binder behind, and it gets mixed up with his teacher's belongings. Somehow, the binder makes its way to the principal's desk, and before long, the students listed inside are being called into the office and assigned detention. Now, the bullies are determined to discover who created the binder, and Greg finds himself in quite the predicament.

But if there's one thing we know about Greg, it's that he has a special talent for getting himself out of trouble, even if it means dragging his best friend, Rowley, right into the middle of his mess!

My son and I listened to the audiobook together, and he absolutely loved it! It was such a fun listening experience, and I enjoyed seeing how entertained he was by Greg's antics. Jeff Kinney continues to capture the humor, awkwardness, and chaos of middle school life in a way that resonates with young readers.

As an elementary school teacher, I also appreciated how the story incorporated the topic of bullying while maintaining the humor that makes this series so popular. Beneath all the ridiculous situations, there are opportunities for conversations about friendship, accountability, and the consequences of our choices.

Overall, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Fight or Flight was an entertaining audiobook that my son thoroughly enjoyed. Greg is still Greg, Rowley is still getting caught up in his shenanigans, and Jeff Kinney continues to deliver the humor that keeps young readers coming back for more.

I would definitely recommend this one to fans of the series, especially families looking for a fun audiobook to enjoy together!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an advance audiobook copy in exchange for my honest review.

My October curse is once more upon me, but thanks to Hoopla I can now knock these out within three hours of publication and go back to my normally scheduled reading of serious literature (indie comics). Anyway, the late stage Wimpy Kid books all seem to fall into either a heavily plotted dynamic or exist as a series of bits. This one bridges the gap between those two poles, with the first half finding Kinney as Greg riffing on the concept of bullies (mostly mid, with occasional intrusions like Ring cameras, Flock cameras, and the I Survived series reminding you that Greg has been in middle school for 20 years now) and the second half seeing Greg set up Rowley as his fall guy while also paying off a bunch of gags introduced earlier in the book. None of it is that funny, mind, but for middle grade readers looking to learn how to set up a punchline, I suppose you could do worse. Sometimes I wonder what happened to Chirag Gupta; indeed, it feels like Kinney pointedly avoids any depiction of race in these books anymore, with characters rendered in either a Normal or Cro-Magnon design. Arguably for the best. The biggest shock in this one is that Greg is depicted as a frequent reader, which doesn't quite gel with the characterization established by twenty previous books, but I guess even wimpy kids could be someone's role model. Maybe next October Greg will go to high school, but I'm doubting it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Fight or Flight by Jeff Kinney
🎧 Narrated by Ramon de Ocampo

Another five-star family listen! As a mom of three boys who’ve read or listened to every Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, I can say this one was a HUGE hit! We listened to the entire audiobook together after dinner in one sitting, and all three boys agreed it’s one of the best yet!

Greg’s hilarious attempts to avoid a bully and the chaos surrounding his missing binder kept us thoroughly entertained. But what I appreciated most was how the bullying storyline sparked some meaningful conversations with my younger boys about their own past behavior and how even unintentional bullying can hurt others. Kindness is a universal expectation in our household, and I loved that such a funny book could reinforce such an important lesson!

Ramon de Ocampo’s narration was fantastic, as always! And after 21 books, my boys and I would LOVE to see Greg and Rowley tackle high school together. Please make it happen, Jeff Kinney!

Huge thanks to Amulet Books and NetGalley for the advance listening copy! 🎧

✨Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Fight or Flight by Jeff Kinney

✨RD: October 20, 2026

✨Narrator: Ramón de Ocampo

--->🎧We have loved Ramón de Ocampo's narration for all of these books! Ollie has a Yoto, and he plays these books all the time! He does such a good job narrating and switching character POV's. He has such a unique voice that I know immediately what Ollie is listening to.

Ollie loved this one and wanted to listen to it again after he finished. He loved the antics they got up to and found many moments funny. I loved that this book is tackling bullying and friendship. This is such an important topic, and it's handled with care. It never got preachy. There are many times my son laughed out loud, and that's why we love these books so much!

There are so many books in this series, and somehow Greg and Rowley always find trouble. haha! We are big fans of the series, and this was another great addition!

This is a must read if you are a fan of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Greg Heffley's challenges of growing up, school, family and friends continue in this book. The story brings me back to my own childhood and the awkward situations we faced as kids. The hilarious situations he gets himself into is entertainment for the whole family. Easy read, enjoyable characters, and perfect for school age kids.

Ramon de Ocampo's narration elevates the story and brings extra entertainment. Our family listened to it in the car and we all enjoyed the story and the narration.

-I received this audiobook from NetGalley-

What a good book.

This had me and my ten year old laugh out loud. It was set up in a way that you sympathize with the main character, but at the same time almost go through the situation with him. It didn't feel like it was telling you everything that was happening, or why things were this way or another. But instead was more you are experiencing the situation along side the main character, and things work out the way they do, because that's how it is.

Was refreshing for a kids book, listening as an adult. And my 10 year old will be checking out the other books in the series!

My kids and I read this together. They are obsessed with this series and I happened to get an advanced copy so we read it together for our family book club (I’m trying to encourage my tweens to read more 🤣).

We thought how they handled the bullying was both informative and funny and how it kind of flipped around by the end was hilarious and unfortunate.

My favourite part was how they continued to stress how important reading is and that not enough kids are doing it. And the short form videos is making everyone dumber and act like zombies.

Thank you to NetGalley for giving us an ARC of this one.

My son was so excited to hear we had gotten approved for this! He has read the entire series and was eagerly awaiting this one. I personally did not think this one was as funny as some of the others I have read aloud with my son but it doesn't mean this isn't without its merits. I liked that this focused on bullying and had some really good points for kids to remember. As goofy as some of these books can be, I will forever be grateful to Jeff Kinney and Dav Pilkey for turning my son into a reader!
