Nothing Happened: How Invisible Trauma, Emotional Neglect, and Attachment Wounds Shape Us and How We Learn to Heal

Nothing happened.
And yet, something did.

Not all trauma is caused by what happened to us. Sometimes it is shaped by what never the comfort that was missing, the emotions that were not met, the safety that was never felt.

In Nothing Happened, clinical psychologist Julia A. Andre explores omission trauma, also known as relational or attachment trauma, and the lasting impact of emotional neglect and misattunement. This form of invisible trauma often goes unrecognised because there is no single event to point to, no obvious story that explains the pain.

Drawing on years of clinical work with complex and relational trauma, this book explains how invisible trauma shapes the nervous system, relationships, and sense of self. It offers language for experiences that were never named and clarity for patterns that may have felt confusing, minimised, or self-blaming.

In this book, you will

why emotional neglect can be traumatic even without abuse

how omission trauma shapes attachment, self-trust, and identity

why “nothing happened” can still leave lasting wounds

what healing can look like when the injury was relational, not event-based

Written with warmth, care, and clinical depth, Nothing Happened is for anyone who has felt emotionally alone, struggled with closeness or abandonment, or sensed that something was wrong despite being told that nothing bad happened.

This is not a book about reliving the past. It is an invitation to understand it, to gently reconnect with yourself, and to begin healing through awareness, self-compassion, and relational safety.

You do not need a dramatic story to deserve healing.
Sometimes, the absence of what should have been is the wound itself.
