It began before the Civil War with Joel Trevor, settler. Rugged, resourceful, he was willing to fight Mexicans, carpetbaggers, raiders, even Nature itself to secure his ranch. Then he won the beautiful Spanish Sofia who joined her heart and her lands to his. When control passed to Joel's daughter Anne, she took trouble and tragedy with the same conquering spirit as her father. She took lovers too as she fancied and left them when she chose until she met the Scotsman Alex Cameron with whom she founded a dynasty.
I was really loving this first book in the trilogy, lots of drama, action, passions, tragedy etc..even the feisty heroine Anne kept me turning the pages. Her father Joel's story did get rather long in the tooth and I was glad more of his daughter came into play. But when Alex Cameron enters the the picture ( dull as dishwater personality ) and Anne becomes rather possessive and nagging it started to go downhill. Then when she and Alex ( now her husband ) are parted for a bit ( big misunderstanding ) Anne falls back into an ex-lovers arms. ( big no-no for me here) Then she decides to get rid of the "consequences" of that. ( bigger no-no for me ) Well now...almost got mighty peeved that I got this far and the author dumped this into it. But I finished it up ( still wasn't thrilled how it progressed ) This is one of those books you would like to re-write your own version, when it starts to take a nose dive. I will still read book two The Power just to see how things go with the next generation and hope The Kingdom redeems itself through that one.
The magnificent saga of generations of a Texas family and Texas history. Ronald S. Joesph will keep you riveted to his tale anxious to know who and what comes next. This is the first of his trilogy, "The Kingdom," "The Power" and "The Glory" that will fascinate any lover of the old west, historical romances and history buffs. A great writer!
