⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 stars)

I was absolutely obsessed with this from start to finish. Which is a feeling I didn’t have for a while and I gotta say, I loved it sooo much!!! This whole story was so emotional and yet so hopeful to read, especially since it did deal with heavier topics such as domestic abuse. I loved the way Emily Hastings wrote both of the main characters Miller and Astoria. Especially Astoria had my heart captured from the very beginning and also Miller was soo well written that I absolutely adored reading their story and how the two eventually found love in each other. Besides that, I gotta say that I really liked the general setting of the story with the legal battle between Astoria and her ex-wife. But I also like the main theme really well and that the story wasn’t just a typical romance but also included finding oneself and creating a future where one can be truly themselves without diminishing one’s own worth or identity. Moreover, and this was my favorite part of the whole book, the writing is phenomenal!! Maybe it’s because I haven’t read a book that truly shined with its writing style for a while but this one truly ticked all of my boxes. It wasn’t too detailed but also not too vague. It was well written with nicely formulated descriptions and great spicy scenes (hehe I’m just a lesbian and a sucker for very well written spice). And generally the whole character development was so well constructed and fit within the pace and felt truly unique within its own right. The only thing I wish we would’ve gotten is a little bit more detail in the end because I think Astoria’s ex-wife’s reaction was somewhat mild compared to how she was portrayed in the overall story. But I do see the point of giving the characters a happy ending after 200+ pages, so I don’t want to complain too much (haha).
Overall, this was truly such a nice read that genuinely made me so happy and got me out of a slump! So, I can only recommend giving this one a chance!!

Wow, this is powerful and full of angst!

Ms Hayes is certainly a masterful writer. This story held my interest with the tension she built, the character development and the very intense relationships, work and personal that resulted. The court room scenes could have been boring but her skills with writing kept the tension high. Then there were the erotic scenes that also kept the interest on point. All in all a very enjoyable read.

Having read all the Phoenix Ridge series so far, I was really pleased when this book was published, and I wasn't disappointed. Emily Hayes has done it again; another story that I was unable to stop reading until finished, and then disappointed because it was! Emily develops her characters so cleverly and sensitively, which, together with a strong storyline, makes her books a joy. No spoilers, but this ice queen could freeze me anytime she likes! 😜

DNF at 45%

I read this on my kobo with a font size that made this 558 pages, along with page number citations I will be adding chapters for reference purposes.

I don’t want to accuse anyone of using AI to write without evidence, and I do not have evidence, but I do have suspicions.

When I first saw this book I suspected the cover to be AI but I looked at the reviews and tried to dismiss it because clearly no one else had the same concerns as I did. I started reading it and it seemed fine, a bit off here and there with continuity; Miller saying she does not want to bring home leftover pie then suddenly putting leftover pie in her fridge. I wanted to give the author the benefit of the doubt — because there were no prompts left in the book and that’s truly the only way to really tell if something is written by AI — I ignored the error and continued reading.

Something about this book bothered me so I looked at the goodreads author profile and looked at her most recent works, all of them have the same kind of cover and all released within one month or in some cases a handful of days from each other. This makes me feel as though there is at least some AI assistance in writing these. It does not make sense to be able to publish at least one, roughly, 300 page book every month since late 2024/early 2025. That is not a sustainable pace for anyone to keep up at. I can say for certainty that the author absolutely uses AI to promote their books, I looked at their instagram and it is almost entirely AI slop which tells me they likely have no qualms utilizing it in other areas.

As for the issues I had with the story itself, I have one big issue: Miller is one of the attorneys Valerie hired to help with divorce proceedings against Astoria. Throughout Astoria’s point of view, Valerie is established to be an emotionally abusive liar. However, in Miller’s point of view, Valerie claims Astoria to be the abusive partner, this leads to Rachel and Miller talking about Valerie’s credibility and establishing that they fully believe her. Miller goes into the divorce proceedings fully believing Valerie, as is her job. The issue I had stems from the fact that the second Miller sees Astoria in the mediation, she’s smitten with her, this does not make sense to me, seeing as Miller is representing someone she believes to have been emotionally abused by Astoria. Miller has a glimmer of doubt in Valerie during the mediation with the document dating scene but she brushes it off, believing Valerie to be mostly truthful. Why would Miller willingly want to get into a relationship with someone she believes to be emotionally abusive? It does not seem logical to me.

This book is a mess to me, some continuity errors are eclipsed mostly by logical errors; who would want to enter into a relationship with someone they believe to be emotionally abusive? I am not accusing the author of using AI to write the book, I have no concrete proof of that claim, but I am accusing the author of AI generating the cover and the promotional material for the book. Even if I did not decide to DNF this book, the author’s use of AI outside of the content inside the pages of the book makes me sick and not want to support them.

This was a decent but simple and largely forgettable romance between a 46-year-old wealthy CEO and an attorney who appears to be 36 or so. The CEO (the "ice queen" referred to in the book title) is going through a contentious divorce, while the attorney is serving as second chair for the other side of the divorce case. The prose isn't bad, especially at the beginning, and the legal case follows an interesting arc, especially at the end. But overall the book was neither deep nor exciting for me, and it contained embarrassing errors that made me wonder if it was proofread before submission to Amazon.

I don't see this as an enemies-to-lovers story, because the CEO and lawyer are mainly just on opposite sides of a court case, not enemies. The story didn't have a lot of depth or complexity, but it did make the characters feel real. It also made the characters' emotions – heartbreak, love, etc. – feel real. The attorney realizes for the first time that she's a lesbian, adding extra interest. But the story spent little time exploring that development, which I felt should be given more weight.

The sex scenes fell flat for me and became repetitive. During passionate sex, the writing should make you truly feel the depth of characters' desire, urgency, pleasure, even lust if consistent with the story. Sex that is slower and more romantic deserves to be described lyrically. So much creativity is possible. I felt the story fell short on that account.

The errors in the text were glaring and show carelessness. The book loses half a star for that. In the Kindle version, an important line spoken by one of the characters at a particular event is attributed, nonsensically, to another character on a later page. Both pages can't be right. It seems like a copy-paste error. How does that get past the editor? In another scene, a particular item appears out of nowhere, as if a few lines of text are missing (I want that device! Think of the element of surprise).

I did finish the book at least.

be careful who you marry..

If you’re looking for chemistry, conflict, conflict of interest, clandestine meetings this is the book for you. Oh, and a revengeful ex wife trying to fleece her former spouse and the ex wife is maybe a little crazy. Good reading. 🙂

Astoria and Miller meet at divorce negotiations-Miller was second chair for opposing counsel.. representing Victoria Astoria’s vindictive wife. As the negotiations proceeded Miller began to see flaws in her client’s documents and irrational behavior. She also had an encounter with Astoria a kiss, then a second encounter-another kiss. At this point the ethical thing was to recuse herself as counsel. Which set Victoria off. I mentioned she a little crazy.

I love it!

This story had everything: lawyers jousting with real facts and emotional "facts", courtroom scenes, corporate battles, steamy love scenes, a capering dog, some real, pain, brought about by paying attention to ethics. And really good writing, except for two or three places where an incorrect word turned up what sounded like the correct one. I said the word out loud, in context, and figured it out. Not a big deal, I lost, maybe, 2 minutes. These were people I would like to have met, IRL.

I'm not a big fictional/contemporary romance fan.

By chapter 14, I had lost my interest in the storyline but I did what to know how the divorce proceedings went and skimmed over the rest of the book.

I love a good opposites attract but this one felt a little like insta-romance cause why would Miller fall in love after a few meetups outside the court? To make matters worse, she hadn't been into women at all(even if she has 2 moms).

It's a good story with missed marks, you should read it.

Great Story

I loved the book. My mom once told me that if a book leaves you with wanting more then that is great character writing. I would only ask for more on Miller side. Like when Miller found the first financial mistake. I would have liked Rachel and Miller's conversation about it, Rachel reaction about the testimony, and the Sunday dinner after Miller told her mom's about her being in love would be awesome. I love a book that makes me wish for more. Thank you

love a happy ending

This was a great book. I like the integrity of the characters. Such a refreshing change from current events. And it’s such an easy, comfortable read. There are plenty of legal proceedings but they definitely add to the story seamlessly for the legal lingo challenged people like me.

F/f is not usually something I read, but the blurb sounded interesting and I’m glad I gave the author and the story a chance. This was an exciting tale with a true villainess I loved to hate. Miller and Astoria are strong, ethical characters, something refreshing to read these days.

Started off very good and could have been exceptionally good but then became very repetitive. Also a little hard to understand why the struggle was so hard since they are grown women and there is a clear Timeline...

Strong, real and beautifully told.

A story that happens all to often , however barely written from the lgbtq+ side.

DNF at around 45%. The set up was so good and had such potential. Then the writing got so juvenile and the plot rushed so quickly it was off putting.
