Book to dip into- read the good introduction and PennyLane/Strawberry fields chapter as I remember buying the single with Dad in a Fareham record store on bottom of West Street near to High Street. Hunter had a unique and special relationship with the Beatles which this book rightly celebrates.
I started out enjoying this, but it seemed to get a little routine as the book progressed through the years. This is odd, as the Beatles’ lyrics get more complicated over time. But the analysis gets less interesting.
Davies provides a unique insight into the Beatle period. Actually being friends with the fab four at the height of their popularity gives him such an accurate and interesting retelling of events that other biographical writers only wish they had.
I hate to view the book so objectively as I really didn’t agree with hunter on much and didn’t feel he much liked the Beatles either but….I got to re-listen in complete chronology and read simultaneously. Can’t mess that up!
4.5? Well it was a slow start because it was very repetitive because of course the early beatles lyrics were themselves repetitive. But things improved! I appreciated the role of the author's personal stories and insight. However! sometimes his opinion played too much of a role ie some songs were neglected bc he said they didn't have interesting enough lyrics which at points I really didn't agree with Overall was great fun because i love the beatles
