Masquerave is where you can embrace your darkest desires and the only rule is everyone must don a mask. Chained to Control is the long awaited follow up after the brutal cliffhanger of book one. We are dropped right back in the thick of it with the fall out of the accident and Lena’s kidnapping. Devin and Tony wake in the hospital, both lucky to have survived the accident. Lena is back in Matt’s clutches and he is keeping her drugged to a catatonic level to control her. Devin and Tony along with Tasha, Nate, and the newcomer Lex, work together to find Lena and destroy Obsidian. Devin and Tony’s anguish and rage is palpable but without Lena there to soften their edges, they struggle to keep their monstrous sides at bay. They fight each other and their demons throughout, but are able to embrace their newly physical and emotional relationship. Since Lena is drugged through most of the story, it was hard to read what she’s goes through at the hands of the vile excuse for a human, Matt. I missed seeing Lena’s firey side and the dynamic between the three of them since they are separated for most the book. There are more secrets, more mystery, and even more savage bloodlust. Devin and Tony prove there is nothing they won’t do, no line they won’t cross to get Lena back and bring down the villainous Obsidian group. Lena makes an unlikely alliance and they work together to escape. Lena’s harrowing journey and what she does to survive is nothing short of fearless. While Devin got answers about his brother’s death, I would have liked more closure about the take down of Obsidian. With Lena home and The Obsidian crumbling we are left with a new mystery when Tony and Lex’s past surfaces, setting up the plot for the next book.

“I’m not a pawn in his game any longer—I’m the f_ € k !ng queen.”

“When I look at you and Tony, I see the whole world—my whole world. You quiet my monster when you’re around and feed me in ways that shows just how starved I was.”

“I would d!£ for you, Lena,” I breathe, cupping her nape and leading her out of the downpour, letting the warmth of the steam settle onto our skin. “But even more, I want to live for you. You see me as the man and not the monster I can be. You don’t balk at my scars, but embrace them as if they were your own. Chained to Control is the second full book in the Masquerave universe. We pick up after the brutal cliffy from book 1, with Lena fighting for her life and freedom from her piece of trash ex, and Tony and Devin literally fighting for their lives and sanity while trying to free Lena.

This was painful and at times hard to read. I’ll just say that you should definitely mind your triggers and your mental health. In my opinion, well done dark romance thoughtfully and realistically addresses trauma and violence, and human reactions to it, and I think K L Hill does this well. Most of the book is fucking brutal, but I was so proud to see Lena rise into her strength and power in the end.

While Tony and Devin basically spiral to their darkest monstrous depths while also deepening their relationship with one another, we meet a couple new compelling characters, Lex and Ashton, and we get more Tasha, Bri, Nate, and some other fun side characters (“The dungeon daddies are fighting” lol). I’m pretty sure this is teed up for additional books, which makes me so happy.

I love the Masquerave world. It’s dark and gritty, but also filled with people who would literally go to the ends of the earth for each other, who love each other so deeply, platonically and romantically and everything in between. “I would die for you, Lena. But even more, I want to live for you. You see me as the man and not the monster I can be.”

Thank you so much to K L Hill for the ARC, I can’t wait to see what happens next in your worlds!

ARC REVIEW

Welcome back to Masquerave. Where you can explore your deepest most depraved fantasies and embrace your darkest desires. The only rule? You must adorn a mask.

Let me just say this book hit me. I cried, I laughed and let me tell you did I drool over these characters again.

Devin and Tony will stop and nothing to ensure those important to them are safe. But how far will they need to go to take back their queen?

dark and just ok for me

I enjoyed the first book a little more. They are both dark, but the fact that they are separated for the majority of the book just didn’t do it for me. This is also a book I would recommend reading right after the first one. So much of the first books information is needed to understand what’s going on in this book. Overall, if you read them back to back and want something dark, read this series.

This book is DARK. Please, please read the trigger warnings. The last book was dark, this one is several shades darker. There were a few pages I had to skim (or outright skip) rather than read word for word, which is not something I commonly do.

That said, this was a direct sequel to Coded in Control, which picks up immediately after the ending of the first book. Everything is in chaos, and honestly it stays that way for the majority of the book. While I was definitely on the edge of my seat the entire read, reflecting on the story has me realizing that there's not really strong chacter development. The boys spiral and regress, Lena bides her time until she can be part of the story again. We introduced some side characters that were good additions and kept the book from feeling stagnant. However, a decision made late in the book ultimately makes some really terrible events feel like glorified filler. We learn some things about the "politics" of Obsidian and the wider crime world, but ultimately, none of that matters by the end of the book. Which makes the awful, brutal things that happened feel pointless. And then the end seems like make-up, conscillatory sex scenes because they didn't get to for the rest of the book, instead of the scenes that had real chemistry and excitement in Coded in Control. I really wanted to enjoy this book, but despite my love for the first entry in the series I do not think I was the intended audience for this work.

***Some spoilers below***

I am especially sensitive to media that glorifies the trauma of women. The main character is brutally abused in every sense of the word in this book. For MONTHS. And instead of selling me on care being put into her recovery, they jump right into bed and it's all "she's not the same girl, she's so much stronger" and it gave me major ick. Go to this author's website, look at the trigger warnings, take them SERIOUSLY, and take care of yourself.

Omgods KL, where has this book been for the past year??!! (Jk, I know, in your amazing 🧠) I remember reading Coded In Control last year, and the CH that shooketh my world! Reading the first few chapters of Chained threw me straight back into Tony & Devin's raw pain and rage, and I Raced through this in 2 days bc the whole cast had me in a chokehold! (And not the good kind from the guys!)

I loved that we see Tony & Devin's more savage, visceral, and primal personas. I hate that it was at the cost of Lena's safety. But seeing them blossom together and fight through their demons was rewarding. I have a big feeling that we've only scarped the surface of their past demons. There are still pasts and secrets that I'm sure we're going to learn about more, bc the ending???

And Daddy Lex?!?! Please, I need more of this snarky-aśś man in my life! (Or my fantasies, I'm not picky) But did you have to make me cry??? Bc I did ma'am, thank you very much. I hated her and then I LIKED her!!!

But whew, you gave us allllllll the angsty, angry, desperate spice in this one between Devin and Tony, and boy are we thankful!

I genuinely cannot recommend any of KL’s books enough and I am so incredibly grateful for an arc copy 💜

Welcome back to the world of Masquerave my loves!! We may have been left on the edge of a massive cliff in Coded In Control but like the sadist KL is, she managed to drag me right back in without a fight for book two.

And what a god damn book it is. Even more secrets, mystery, bloodlust and carnage have been shown to us. Obsidian is still just as awful and dangerous as before, but our guys, Dev and T have not taken it lying down.

Our girl, Lena, is holding her own. Learning even more about herself and clinging to sanity while doing what she needs to in order to survive the prison she’s been thrust back into.

We get to meet even more people, from the past and from the present. We get to see a bit more behind Tony’s elusive mask and past. Devin’s monster continues to come out to play. And Tash? Still an incredible badass who will not let anyone walk over her.

If you read Coded and need more, don’t worry love, our favourite author has blessed us once again. 😘

This was the second book of the duet, and so much darker than the first.
There was a whole new POV from a new character which was unique and very interesting. I really liked the new dynamic it added to the story. The devotion Tony and Devin had to Lena was very on brand from their characters from the first book.
I felt awful for Lena and the situation she was in.
Seeing Ashton redeem herself and work hard to prove who she was also was beautiful to see, we love a good redemption arc.

My biggest difficulty with this was I felt somewhat disconnected from the rescue and reunion between all the main characters. The whole book was spent trying to get them all back together and I felt Lena didn't get any time to heal or come to terms with her trauma. We also didn't really get time in the book with them all together, it felt a bit rushed at the end. Like " and then they were together and horny forever...the end"

I received an arc of this book and this is my honest review.

KL Hill did NOT come to play with book two of the Masquerave series. The men in this one absolutely consumed me including the sexy new character. The tension, the LOYALTY, the obsession, the way these men will burn the entire city down for Lena? I was not okay. I am still not ok.

The relationships feel so earned after Coded in Control, and watching everyone's dynamics shift and deepen under pressure had me gripping my book so tight. The masks are cracking, the monsters are unleashed, and honestly? I loved every second of it.

There is one guy I really wanted to murder the entire story. You'll understand when you read it!

When I say dark romance, I mean it! These books go to some dark places, but KL Hill writes it in a way that keeps you coming back for more. You're not just surviving the darkness, you're addicted to it. 🖤

My only complaint? KL Hill knows exactly how to end a book with the most enticing cliffhanger.
I absolutely cannot wait for the rest of this series.

Welcome back to Masquerave! And what a world it is... after spending a year hanging off a cliff we finally find out what happens and it was SO worth the wait.

Lena's story through this book will pull every heartstring you have, and seeing her battle is intense.

Devin and Tony become so much closer throughout the book and it is down, dirty, primal, intense and every other superlative you can think of.

I have very strong feelings about Lex and they rode a rollercoaster throughout the book. Ashton was a superb side character who stole my heart by the end of the book.

The best bit of this book is all the gaps it fills in their stories. I feel like I know Lena, Tony and Dev so well now and I love them all, darkly and deeply.

And of course- the spice is flaming hot.

Oh my goodness this book is so good! Coded in control left you on such a major cliffhanger, I couldn't wait to read this book. Chained to control picks up where Coded in Control left off. The things Devin and Tony would do for Lena. They'll do whatever it takes to get their girl back. Someone from Tony's past comes back into his life. They task him to infiltrate Obsidian to find out where Lena is. Devin gets tired of waiting and goes rogue, forcing Tony to take action. Matt gets what he deserves!! This is a dark romance so check the trigger warnings. Definitely recommend this book.
I got this book as an ARC and will give my honest opinion.

Coded in Control left us on a cliffhanger and left me begging for more after a year of waiting I finally got all the answers I was waiting for!! Devin, Tony and Lena had a very emotional trauma filled ride in this second part of the masquerave series...Did it get the ending I was hoping for? 100% yes!! Was I furious with the villains in this book the entire time? Also yes!! This book was the second chapter I was looking for!! This was a solid 5⭐4.5🌶️ read for me!! As always make sure if you have triggers you read the warnings because this one is heavy.

ARC Review

This was the easiest five star read…I was taken on such a rollercoaster of emotions…definitely in a good way.
We picked up right where we left off from the cliffhanger from book 1…Lena was fighting for her life, while Tony and Devin were doing everything in their power to find her. We saw some of their darkest moments…and at times I felt myself with tears rolling saying “my poor babies.” This book was such a hard read, but absolutely amazing. Lena is so so strong and powerful, and it was amazing to watch her rise above.

Please please be mindful of your triggers, but I would 100% recommend this to anyone looking for their new why-choose obsession🩷

Thank you to K.L Hill for the opportunity to read this amazing ARC.

The moment I finished Coded I knew I had to read Chained ASAP. This story picks right up where Coded ends. Immediately I was stressed, questioning everything, worried for everyone’s lives.

The connections that developed were so so good. Plus a new side character that gives main character energy… dare I say, age gap romance in our future?

And the end… So many questions!!!! Now I need the next one immediately.

I NEED A MOMENT TO COMPOSE MYSELF AND MY THOUGHTS AFTER READING CHAINED.

GO TO MY REVIEW OF CODED FROM LAST YEAR AND KNOW IVE BEEN OBSESSED WITH TONY, DEVIN AND LENA FOR OVER A YEAR.

I’ll be back once I’ve cooled off

**

OK, back.

[If that’s what you need, then fcking kill me.]

Chained to Control is book 2 in the Masquerade series, masterfully written by KL Hill.

First, a couple orders of business so you have the best reading experience with this one:
• You MUST read book 1 (Coded in Control) before reading this one. (It’s hands down worth the time you take to read it)
• READ THE CONTENT WARNINGS, or (if you prefer not to) expect this to be a heavy read. It’s all part of painting a bigger picture – this is a 4 book series!

Now, Chained to Control picks up off a cliffhanger, and here’s what you probably remember: That A-Hole (Matt – Obsidian) is likely the one responsible for Bri’s abduction, and the car accident. Things aren’t looking very good for Tony, Devin and Lena. Did our guys let their guard down so much that they risked it all and lost the pot?

Chained is desperate, raw, and pain combined with the darkness that lurks beneath the city. There’s so much more to discover in the shadows; our favourite monsters (Tony and Devin) are tested, they know their love for each other is strong, but can they handle the pain and pressure of potentially losing the glue (Lena) that keeps it all together?

I laughed, I cried, I speculated, I discovered that two girls make a fun chapter to read. We learn more about the complexities that make our MCs who they are, and we see Lena continue to rise from the ashes. We meet new characters, and others we already know try to redeem themselves but ehhhh good thing there’s another two books to read.

I love this series and have been thinking about it since April 2025 (Check my Coded in Control review)! If we talk in the real world, you know this already.

What to expect:
Dark Romance
Why Choose
Revenge
Abduction
Touch them and X
Found Family
Past Come Knocking
Found Family

I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of Chained to Control, and I am providing my honest review. Thank you, KL Hill and her team, for the opportunity.

Definitely worth the wait!

Lena really goes through it in this one.

Dev and Tony have their fair share of struggles while trying to get Lena back.

Secrets come to light. Relationships grow. Revenge is had.

The set up for the next book has me so excited for more!

Alright ya’ll I’ve been sitting on this review for a bit now, and I knew I would be. But it is time.

If you read Coded in Control, you know it ends on a cliffhanger (rude), but if you haven’t read it, this is a spoiler free review.

Book 2 picks up right where we left off and basically punches you in the face right away. Again. I could feel the pain radiating in my chest immediately and it honestly never really went away until about 80% in. Thanks KL.

The characters of Masquerave are full of anguish, and rage, and desire. But also love. The journey that these characters go on is a hard one, and seeing them come out of it alive, was like coming up for air. While this story is a continuation, it’s still new. The characters are discovering new things about the dangers that lurk. The people they are. And the thing they crave most.

Devin has a jealous side. Tony has a dark past. And the new guy? I fucking love him. Bri is being Bri, and Tasha is just trying to keep everyone in check. Nate is still Sus and I’m still set on that other guy ISNT DEAD.

This book finished me. I laughed. I cried. I almost threw my kindle across the room once or twice. Coded in Control lives rent free in my head and I just KNEW Chained to Control would be there right along with it.

There’s so much I want to say, but can’t because SPOILERS. You’ll just need to go read the damn books yourself. But I promise, it’s worth it. Me and my 273 kindle highlights say so. 👀

This is an ARC review and all thoughts are my own, thank you father KL🖤

Omg just drop us in the deep end again, what a hell of a ride this book was.

I've missed these three from Coded in Control so it's good to get them back but at what cost

Tony and Devin in this one are the most unhinged, savage and their monsters have awakened without their queen.
They do become closer but they are having to fight their demons, past and present.
Lena was so damn powerful, learning her own strength and doing all she could to survive the torment.
It absolutely gutted me to see all three of them fall apart.

I enjoyed part of Tony's past coming back bringing an unhinged character into the mix I think he needs to tame Bri though those two are funny.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next book even though I've just finished this one. I want to see how it all finally plays out.

Ummmmm holy moly goodness!!!! The aftermath of Lena being taken / kidnapped by Matt was so chaotic and heartbreaking seeing what everyone’s feelings of her being gone did to them. To kind of see everyone’s downward spiral was very sad but insightful, because it shows how much everyone loved and cared for her. But especially with Tony and Devin, they were spiraling because what I felt was that she is like the glue that holds them together, plus she also kinda brought Tony and Devin together. So to see them losing control of themselves and leaning into their darker side, letting their monster out, it was so very heartbreaking. But the measures they took to get her back shows how important and love they have for her. The switching of POVs were interesting but I think was necessary especially with the undercover stuff and Lena’s POV of what she went through and her progression. Literally perfection. LOVED!

I have been waiting for this book and this is one of those books that finishes you when you finish it. And somehow still leaves you thinking of every little thing that might happen next.

This review is intentionally a bit vague because the first book in the series, Coded in Control ends on a cliffhanger with Chained to Control picking up right where Coded left off. And literally that’s spoilers which I don’t do. 🫡

That being said, please check the trigger warnings because this one is dark.

Chained to Control by KL Hill kicks off with a few answers and infinitely more questions about Lena, Tony and Devin… and LITERALLY everyone else. And when Tasha’s Hail Mary shows up, things get a whole lot more interesting in the fight to overthrow Obsidian.

Devin is used to being able to act first and think second but his patience is thin while they watch Obsidian before taking back what’s theirs. Tony is tested as they expand their circle of trust and their monsters threaten to pull them under.

And that’s all I can say without ruining the whole story so now you just get my unhinged rambling.

This. Book. Finished. Me.

It’s heavy, it’s raw, it’s brilliant. KL does dark romance so insanely well that you feel every single possible feeling in the span of one of her books. And the spice is so SO hot and then someone’s unalived and then you’re crying and it’s perfect. If you like hot emotional damage.

Chained to Control was one of my most anticipated reads this year—and it did NOT disappoint.

Coded in Control (book one) left us on a massive cliffhanger, so trying to review this without spoilers is honestly a challenge 😅

This book had everything, action, love, revenge, tension, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, stressing about how it was all going to play out.

I loved the new characters that were introduced… but I’m still side-eyeing a certain someone 👀 and I refuse to believe another certain someone is actually dead. We’ll revisit that theory later.

And now I have to wait a WHOLE YEAR for book three?? Torture. Absolute torture. But Father clearly knows what she's doing, so I’ll survive (barely).

If you like:
✨ MMF
✨ Dark romance
✨ K*nk club vibes
✨ Secret/elite s3x clubs
✨ Masked men
✨ Revenge
✨ Underworld & corruption

Then The Masquerave Series needs to be on your TBR ASAP.
