Bess Choi is proud of what she’s accomplished. Owner of Strange Brew, a popular coffee shop in Silence, she’s worked hard and has overcome many obstacles to build the life she has. It’s a good life, one that includes work she loves, an apartment to call her own, and plenty of good friends.
But an unexpected phone call comes as a brutal reminder of a time she thought she’d left far behind. Suddenly, she’s faced with the choice to turn her back on the beautiful life she created, or break her guilty silence.
Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander isn’t sure when exactly he started seeing the quiet coffee shop owner as more than simply a good friend. It’s hard to pinpoint the moment when she went from a supportive friend to him and his teenage son, to the woman who features in his dreams and fantasies.
Unfortunately, Bess Choi seems to have him firmly locked in the friend zone, and it’s not until worrisome things start happening around her, she cautiously starts lowering the barriers.
But when he discovers she might be in far more danger than she’s been willing to let on, he’s done tiptoeing around.
USA Today bestselling author Freya Barker loves writing about ordinary people with extraordinary stories. Driven to make her books about 'real' people; she creates characters who are perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy, but just as deserving of romance, thrills and chills in their lives.
Recipient of the ReadFREE.ly 2019 Best Book We've Read All Year Award for "Covering Ollie, the 2015 RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for Best First Book, “Slim To None”, and Finalist for the 2017 Kindle Book Award with “From Dust”, Freya continues to add to her rapidly growing collection of published novels as she spins story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!
Okay, this one caught me completely off guard and I was not prepared for how much I’d fall into it. This story pulled me in fast and then just kept tightening its grip. It quietly took over my brain until I was fully locked in and emotionally invested. Freya Barker has a way of writing that feels grounded and authentic but still hits me hard in the feelings. This book delivered on tension, heart, and connection in a way that felt deeply satisfying.
I loved Hugo! He was calm, steady, and protective without being loud about it. His strength was in his presence, not his need to dominate. There was something incredibly attractive about how emotionally aware and dependable he was. And Bess was such a perfect match for him. She was strong, warm, a little guarded, but with a soft vulnerability that made her feel real. Their chemistry felt natural and unforced, and I adored how their relationship unfolded with trust, patience, and genuine emotional depth. The found-family vibe with friends and loved ones around them added so much richness to the story, making everything feel fuller and more lived-in. It wasn’t just a romance, it was a whole world I didn’t want to leave.
☕ Guilty Silence: A 5-Star Blend of Suspense and Soul!
Freya Barker continues to be a powerhouse in the world of inclusive romance! Her true understanding of "love with no boundaries" shines in this third installment of the Silence series. She doesn't just write romance; she recognizes the complexities of the racial world we live in, making Bess and Hugo’s journey feel deeply authentic and necessary. ☕🛡️✨
☕ The Coffee Shop Owner and the Deputy Bess Choi is a heroine to admire. She’s built a beautiful life with her shop, Strange Brew, but she’s haunted by a "guilty silence" from a past she thought was buried. When that past comes calling, she has to decide if she can risk the life she’s built to do what’s right. I loved her strength and the way she cautiously lowered her barriers! ☕🛡️
Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander is the ultimate protective hero. A single father who realized his "supportive friend" was actually the woman of his dreams, he’s tired of being in the friend zone. Once he realizes Bess is in danger, the "tiptoeing" is over! Watching a later-in-life romance where the stakes are this high is incredibly satisfying. 🚓👨👦
✨ Why This Installation Wins: The Multi-Racial Dynamics: Freya Barker’s inclusivity is top-tier. She crafts a world where different backgrounds blend seamlessly into a beautiful, high-stakes narrative. 🌏💖
The "Later in Life" Realism: There is a maturity to Hugo and Bess’s connection. It’s not just about "instalove"; it’s about friendship, shared history, and the protective instincts of a man who has something to lose.
Heroine in Peril: The suspense kept the pages turning! The "secret past" trope was executed perfectly, making the romantic payoff feel deeply earned.
My Final Verdict Guilty Silence is a 5-star masterpiece of Romantic Suspense! It’s "sizzling," grounded, and perfectly highlights why we love Freya Barker. Hugo and Bess prove that no matter how long you’ve been "just friends," or how dark your past is, love has no boundaries when you finally decide to speak up. 🚓☕🔥
GUILTY SILENCE is the third instalment in Freya Barker’s contemporary, adult SILENCE romantic suspense series focusing on the people of Silence, Washington. This is forty-seven year old, single father, Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander, and forty year old coffee shop owner Bess Choi’s story line. GUILTY SILENCE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from dual first person perspectives (Hugo and Bess) GUILTY SILENCE focuses on the search for an arsonist who is targeting businesses in downtown Silence Washington, including the business owned by our story line heroine. Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander offers Bess a room that will pull our couple closer together as Hugo has lusted after Bess for as long as he can remember but all is not as it appear to be when Bess’ past returns, determined to end her life, and everyone she loves.
The world building is suspenseful and revealing as Bess and Hugo explore the possibility of vengeance against our story line heroine. With each attack, Bess begins to suspect the reasons behind the targeting.
The relationship between Bess and Hugo is a friends to lovers in the wake of the attacks against our story line heroine. Bess’ past has caught up, and Hugo is determined to protect our heroine with his life. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The secondary and supporting characters are energetic and determined. We are reintroduced to Sheriff Savvy Colter and Nate Gaines, former sheriff Brent Colter and his wife Phil, Hugo’s son Carson, mechanic Clem Tanek, as well as the introduction of Bess’ brother Ken, Mayor Don Merrick, and State Patrol CID agent Tess Androtti. The requisite evil has many faces.
GUILTY SILENT is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, power and control, family and relationships, friendships, and love. The character driven premise is intriguing and suspenseful; the romance is seductive and impassioned; the characters are desperate, dynamic and charismatic.
Bess Choi is a heroine you instantly respect. She’s built her life from the ground up, poured her heart into her coffee shop, and created a place of warmth, comfort, and community in the small town of Silence. On the outside, everything looks steady. But inside, she’s carrying a secret that has shaped every choice she’s made for decades.
Hugo Alexander is equally compelling. A widowed deputy sheriff and devoted single father, he’s strong, patient, and deeply protective of the people he loves. He’s also been in love with his best friend for a long time—whether he fully admitted it to himself or not. Watching Hugo slowly step out of the “safe friend” role and into the man who refuses to lose Bess is incredibly satisfying.
What makes this book shine is the foundation of friendship. Their bond feels real, lived-in, and earned. The shift from friends to lovers isn’t rushed—it’s layered with longing, hesitation, fear, and hope. When they finally cross that line, it feels inevitable and absolutely right.
The suspense element adds a gripping edge. As Bess’s past resurfaces and danger creeps closer, the tension escalates in a way that keeps you turning pages late into the night. The threat isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, forcing Bess to confront choices she made long ago and whether silence truly kept anyone safe.
The small-town atmosphere is another highlight. The gossip, concern, and collective support make Silence feel alive and close-knit, like a place where people show up when it matters most.
If you love:
Friends to lovers romance
Protective, persistent heroes
Small-town settings with heart
Strong, hardworking heroines
Romantic suspense with emotional depth
Guilty Silence delivers all of that and more.
This is a story about second chances, the courage to speak the truth, and discovering that love can be the safest place of all. Once you start, you won’t want to put it down.

~ Secrets are dark, twisty, heavy things that can weigh a person down ~ at what point, if ever, is it better to share a secret than to continue to carry it alone ~
What I liked: * Bee Choi: owner of Strange Brew, baker and cook, grew up in Silence, returned to Silence after moving away with her family for a while, interesting backstory, supportive, caring, kind, generous, good friend and Savvy’s best friend, attracted to Hugo * Hugo Alexander: Chief Deputy of Silence, widow, single father to teenage son, focused, strong, protective, knows what he wants and he wants Bee * Carson: Hugo’s son, senior in high school, dating Tatum, responsible, nearly killed in a previous book, responsible, hard worker * Ragnar: rambunctious puppy adopted by Bee Being a fly on the wall watching the romance between Bee and Hugo develop and feeling theywere perfect for and with one another * Lola & Emmett: didn’t’ see much of them but good friends and part of the Strange Brew team * Savvy: Sheriff of Silence, pregnant, engaged to Nate who is father of Tatum, daughter of previous sheriff, starred in a previous book of the series as did her father and his new wife * The plot, pacing, setting and writing that had me guessing what would happen next and why it was happening as the tension mounted * Finding out why there was a target on Bee’s back and who put it there – then hoping that the threat would be dealt with efficiently * The twist of who Bee’s father might be and the part he played in this story * Catching up with characters from the two previous book and meeting characters I hope to see in the future books of the series
What I didn’t like: * The situation that put the target on Bee’s back and those that were out to end her life * Thinking about secrets and the damage they can do…then wondering at what point it is better to share a secret than keep it
Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review
This book is a friends to lovers romance with some edge of your seat suspense. Bess and Hugo have been friends for years, but both have feelings for the other that go deeper than friendship. Working thirteen hour days at her coffee shop leaves Bess with very little time or energy for a personal life. She is content to have her successful business, her cosy apartment and good friends, even if she is sometimes envious of her best friend who has found happiness with a good man. Hugo, a deputy sheriff, was widowed a few years ago and has been preoccupied with his teenage son who has struggled since his mother’s death. He has finally acknowledged his new and different feelings for Bess and thinks it is time to act on them, since he has had hints that she might feel the same.
Unfortunately, the past she thought was buried is back to haunt Bess and creating havoc for more than just her. Suddenly anyone around her seems to be in danger. While she is trying to keep him at a distance, Hugo is having none of it. He is set on protecting Bess and keeping her close is the way to do it. He is persistent, bossy and won’t take no for an answer. She ends up in his home and in his bed, without him in it at first, but that soon changes when they finally admit their feelings to each other. While their romance is heating up, the danger is escalating. Will Bess and Hugo get the chance to build a happily ever after?
I liked the small town setting and the way everyone rallies to offer support when needed. The gossip, the encouragement and the advice given to Bess and Hugo make this book even more enjoyable. I loved the evolution of Bess and Hugo’s relationship and the connection between them. Friendship does make a great foundation for a love match.
Guilty Silence kicked it up a notch or 20 in suspense, mystery and passion!
This is book 3 in the Silence series and while it can be read as a standalone, reading the prior books in order helps you understand the dynamics of this town. In this installment we have Hugo and Bess’ story.
They’ve know each other and have been good friends for a long time. She’s a successful coffee shop owner and he’s a Chief deputy town sheriff. She’s single married to her job, he’s a widower with a teenage son. Both seem level headed, hard working and devoted to those they love.
They’ve been featured in the prior books and now is their turn to come out to play.
They share a friendship that turns into something else when mysterious fires turns their town and their lives upside down.
Intense, suspenseful with unsuspecting mysterious twists, this author added another level of complexity which made this story truly compelling and enthralling. On the surface they appear to have a solid friendship, stable lives and tons of confidence. As their story develops we learn there’s so much more to them.
The mysterious happenings started right away so I was hooked from the very beginning. I thoroughly enjoyed how this story developed, the interplay between the friendship, the budding passionate romance while solving this mysterious horrendous crime. They are both hiding deep painful secrets that come to a head as the mysterious happenings in Silence become more threatening. As they open up to each other we learn secrets about them which made them even more realistic and relatable. They showed vulnerability and compassion that made them perfectly imperfect.
The result for Hugo and Bess was perfection! I had no idea THAT happened!
We are back in Silence where another mature couple finds their HEA. But to get there, many obstacles as well as danger, have to be overcome. Bess Choi, owner of Strange Brew, loves the town, the life she has in Silence and the town loves gathering in her shop. Widowed, single dad , Deputy Sheriff Hugo Alexander has been friends with Bess for a long time and nowadays, he’s ready for more. But Bess is very cautious . When it seems he’s moving forward, Bess receives a call that spooks her. Her brother and only living relative , Ken, has been in jail for the past twenty years. He made her keep a secret and now that he’s out on parole and asking Bess for help due to the danger he’s in, everything Bess has worked hard for seems to be unraveling. When a fire, likely arson, causes extensive damage to Strange Brew, Hugo is determined to find out her secret, and keep her safe. Will Hugo be able to keep her safe from the danger that surrounds her? Can he show her they are stronger together? If they survive the danger, will they find their HEA? The story was engaging from the first page to the last. Hugo and Bess are well developed characters and perfect for each other. They both have history that has taught them how fragile life is. One of the things I love most of the stories by this author, is that the main characters have lived life, and are mature. This was another winner in the series and one that has this reader eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. I was entrusted a copy of this book by Buoni Amici Press. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Emotional, suspenseful, and deeply satisfying
Guilty Silence is a powerful blend of romantic suspense and emotional healing. Freya Barker delivers a story that pulls at your heart while keeping you on edge.
Bess Choi is such a strong yet quietly vulnerable heroine. She’s built a beautiful life with her coffee shop, Strange Brew, and her close-knit community in Silence—but the past she thought she buried refuses to stay silent. Watching her wrestle with guilt, fear, and the weight of long-held secrets is heartbreaking at times. There were definitely tears.
Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander is exactly the kind of hero Bess needs. Steady. Patient. Protective without being overbearing. His evolution from supportive friend to something deeper feels natural and earned. And when he realizes the danger surrounding Bess is far worse than she’s admitted? He steps fully into protector mode—and it’s incredibly satisfying to watch.
The suspense elements are strong and woven seamlessly into the romance. The tension builds steadily, making the stakes feel real. There are lighter moments and some well-timed humor, but the emotional core is Bess confronting her past and finding the courage to stop carrying it alone.
Hugo isn’t flashy—he’s solid, dependable, and unwavering. A truly good man. And that makes him perfect for Bess.
Suspenseful, emotional, and beautifully written—an easy five stars.

Guilty Silence Silence Series Book 3 By Freya Barker
This author had me invested in her Silence Series with book one Finding Silence.
Inside Silence had me on the edge of my seat and I had to wonder what will she bring to book three. Take my word for it she stepped up and brought her readers back to Silence to show us little towns aren’t quiet and holding back information could get you between that rock and hard place, the place where danger lays.
Bess Choi is the owner of the Strange Brew coffee shop on Main Street. She’s quiet, shy and if she thought she didn’t have many friends she needed to open her eyes. She also has an admirer. A man that would stand beside her forever if she would acknowledge that she had feelings for him as well.
That admirer is Deputy Chief Hugo Alexander, single father to a teenager and a man who takes this job seriously. It isn’t until the day that Main Street Mechanics blows up, putting Bess and Hugo in the situation that would end up breaking down walls, building trust and eventually finding out what was holding Bess back.
There was danger, lies of omission and layers of history to get to why Bess was in danger.
The story line is strong! Guilty Silence is full of emotion and history for both Bess and Hugo. It held my attention and I could not put this book down! I give Guilty Silence 5 gold stars and I’m very much looking forward to the next book in this wonderful series.
Guilty Silence is yet another compelling, suspenseful read from Ms. Barker! It has everything I have come to expect from her; mature characters who have experienced life (the good and the not-so-good parts), the protective hero who sometimes gets a little TOO protective, the strong, independent, sometimes abrasive heroine who doesn't necessarily "need" a man in her life but realizes how much better life can be WITH the love of a good one, side characters who become more like family, and a small town that lives and breathes in your imagination, making it seem so much more REAL!
Bess and Hugo have been friends for years. They have been there for one another through some hard times, especially during the dark times when Hugo's wife passed away. Bess was there to help with Carson, Hugo's son, and as a result, Bess and Carson became very close. So, when things start changing between them (Hugo has been looking at Bess as "more than a friend" for a while), Bess feels like her past might be an obstacle to any relationship she might want to have! When Bess's past finally catches up to her, Hugo goes into Alpha Deputy Sherriff mode! *sigh*
As always, the suspense in this one is top notch! I did not see what was coming, at all! I did NOT want this book to end, which to me, makes it a 5+ Star read!! I can't wait to see what happens next in the not-so-sleepy town of Silence!

This third book in the Silence series is a wonderful ’friends to lovers’ story that hooked me in immediately and I literally couldn’t put it down.
Bess Choi is the owner of the coffee shop, Strange Brew, in Silence, and is ‘friends’ with Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander. Yeah—that type of friends. Both are totally in denial until a fire destroys a business in town.
Hugo’s pursuit of Bess is admirable, and I will admit, I did want to give her a shake or two to wake her up. She hides secrets, and while everyone does, these are the kind that need to be shared. In saying that, I did like Bess and Hugo is a sweetheart.
The mystery and suspense are sensational and I couldn’t predict what would happen. To me, that is what makes a fantastic suspense novel and this author gets an A++.
I also enjoyed the slightly older couple, a theme carried through the series, which is very refreshing.
Guilty Silence by Freya Barker was one of those books that quietly wrapped itself around my heart and didn’t let go. This is a deeply emotional, character-driven romance that focuses on healing, forgiveness, and finding connection when words are hard to say. Bess and Hugo are both carrying the weight of past guilt, and watching them slowly find comfort and trust in each other felt incredibly genuine.
What I loved most was how real the characters felt. Bess’s strength, vulnerability, and inner thoughts made her easy to relate to, and Hugo’s steady, patient presence spoke louder than any grand romantic gesture ever could. Their relationship is a true slow burn, built on small moments, shared silences, and emotional honesty, which made every step forward feel meaningful.
Carson was a wonderful supporting character and brought much-needed warmth and dry humour to the story, balancing out the heavier themes perfectly. His scenes added heart and levity without taking away from the emotional depth.
By the end, I didn’t just feel like I’d read a romance — I felt like I’d witnessed two people healing and choosing each other despite their pasts. Guilty Silence is a beautiful reminder that love doesn’t have to be loud to be powerful. This was an easy five-star read for me, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves heartfelt, slow-burn romances with depth and soul.
Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander is beginning to have “more than friend” feelings for Bess Choi. Bess is the owner of Strange Brew, a local coffee shop that has become a favorite of the locals and Hugo. He notices that Bess seems more stressed lately and encourages her to confide in him. He knows that her brother is in prison, but doesn’t know that her brother was released and has been trying to contact her. What does he want and with his former connection to a notorious gang, does he have trouble following him? When a local business is destroyed and her business is targeted, Hugo and their small department are stretched thin trying to process the crime scenes. Is their town being targeted and does this have anything to do with Bess’s brother? As the emotions flare between them, can Hugo keep both Bess and the town safe? Moving her into his home seems the best way to protect her, especially after she breaks her silence about her past and how both she and her brother were affected. When her brother arrives in town, has he brought gang members to their town and can their small department handle the increased threat? A beautiful love story, fraught with danger, between two souls who have both successfully recovered from their pasts. Ordinary people, extraordinary circumstances. Ms Barkers books always fit into the realms of reality. The story is never so far-fetched as to be unbelievable. Deputy Sheriff Hugo and coffee shop owner Bess are two rather ordinary people, friends who are slowly evolving into something more. Bess is a helper. She helped Hugo and his son after the loss of his wife a few years ago. She's happy with the life she built for herself in Silence, living above her coffee shop, steadily building her business. The disaster strikes in the form of events from her past rearing their ugly head. Caught between a rock and a hard place the secret she's harbored for a couple of decades comes back to haunt her. Hugo is ever the protector and knows there's a problem. Gradually, as they grow closer, and in the wake of a fire at her business she opens up to him, and to her best friend the sheriff. Follow along as Hugo moves to keep her safe and eliminate the threat. As things evolve there's still some heartbreak ahead, and a surprise visit. It's such a great story I don't want to give anymore away. Ms Barker never disappoints. In the 8 or so years I've been reading her books I haven't found a bad one in the bunch. Loved it!
Once again Freya Barker’s writing does not disappoint. Bess and Hugo’s story, from ‘good friends’ to ‘more than just good friends’, is just one of the storylines in Guilty Silence, which drew me in. All the characters become family and I felt that I was an actual resident of Silence.
Bess Choi owns Strange Brew, the coffee shop in Silence. Hugo Alexander is the widowed Chief Deputy with a teenage son named Carson. Both Bess and Hugo have feelings for each other but neither have acted on them. Then comes the telephone call.
Ken, Bess’ half-brother, has been in prison for the past twenty years. He reaches out as he is desperate for money and Bess’ world begins to unravel. She has kept a secret for 20 years and now members of Ken’s former gang, the Lotus Squad, are after Bess in order to find Ken. Danger brings Bess and Hugo together.
Will the Lotus Squad find Ken and Bess? Will Hugo be able to keep Bess safe? Who set the two arsons in Silence? Will Bess and Hugo get their HEA?
This story is well written and entertaining. While this book is a standalone, I would highly recommend reading the entire series. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.
Freya Barker is one of my favorite authors, and this book is another strong addition to one of her well-written series. It highlights everything I enjoy about her writing and reinforces why I continue to look for new releases from her. From the beginning, the story is engaging and draws the reader into a world filled with believable characters and meaningful relationships.
One of Barker’s greatest strengths is her ability to create characters that feel realistic and emotionally connected. The relationships develop naturally, and the emotions throughout the story feel genuine rather than forced. Her writing style is smooth and easy to follow, making the book enjoyable from start to finish. As with other books in the series, the pacing is well balanced and keeps the reader invested.
Overall, this book was an enjoyable read and a great continuation of an already strong series. Freya Barker consistently delivers stories that are both engaging and satisfying, which is why she remains an author I return to often and recommend to others who enjoy character-driven novels with emotional meaning.

Guilty Silence is book three in the Silence Series. This book follows the local coffee owner, Bess, and her changing relationship with Chief Deputy Hugo. Bess and Hugo have been friends for a while, but when Hugo starts to feel more at the same time strange and dangerous things start to happen in Bess’s orbit, he decides his days of being cautious about their relationship are over.
I loved so much about this romantic suspense. Bess is a complex character who on the surface does a lot to make sure her cover is intact with even those closest to her, but when people and events from her past threaten the life she is building, she is forced into a seemingly impossible choice. This book has the elements that Freya Barker does best: complex and deep relationships between all the characters and crafting a story that is full of heart, emotions, suspense, and found family. I loved Bess’s determination and resilience and her need to take care of those around her even when her world is falling apart. Likewise, Hugo’s protective streak and his devotion to his son as well as his growing feelings toward Bess make him amazing book boyfriend material. Loved everything about this book. Must read and a great installment to the series. I am loving Silence!!
Widower Deputy Sheriff Hugo Alexander has struggled with his son since he lost his wife the guilt of putting his career first only becoming the husband she deserved when she was sick ways heavy on him, after finally getting on with his life he decides that the friendship he has with Bess could be much more, Bess the owner of Strange Brew returned to Silence years ago to escape the horror of her past and is happy, she has been friends with Hugo for years and has harboured feelings for him for a long time, taking his son under her wing at the coffee shop inevitably means Hugo is around more, when mysterious fires start happening which include the coffee shop Bess realises that they are connected to her brother who just got released from prison after 20 years , needless to say thing are not straight forward and as secrets come out the extend of the threat becomes intense , this is a great addition to the Silence series and as you would expect from this author there are favourite characters from the previous books and new ones with twist and turns in the life or ordinary people with problems this is one to not put down.
I am loving this latest series and all that the little town of Silence has brought to us. Ms Barkers strong, independent heroines, her alpha protective hero's but it's the community and towns she brings to life. You feel like a neighbor not a visitor when reading.
Bess and Hugo have become friends over the years. Looking out for one another. Recently Bess has helped with Carson after the passing of Hugo's wife, giving the boy a safe place while his dad was working. Watching Carson grow into the young man he is becoming and giving him a job in her cafe she has worked so hard to build.
As Bess and Hugo slowly move from friends to lovers, Bess's past seems to be headed right back to her now and she doesn't know how to handle it. Pulling away from Hugo to keep them safe is her plan, but Hugo is having none of it. But the waiting for her to open up and tell him is about trying his every patience.
Ms Barker pulled me in from the very beginning with her relatable characters, her finely webbed suspense and secondary characters.

Guilty Silence in the next book in Freya Barker's new series. With an already great list of residents of the small town of Silence, Hugo and Bess add to the mix and help make the series worth reading.
Bess Choi, hardworking bakery owner of Strange Brew in Silence has made a name for herself. Her dedication and long days to her craft have made her a popular fixture in town. Popular enough to have Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander wanting to step out of his friend zone with her and take a chance with Bess. He just needs Bess to take that same step. When trouble comes knocking on the bakery, Hugo steps in to help keep the woman he has loved for so long safe and out of the eyes of people looking for revenge.
In a small town like Silence, the whole town shows up to protect their own no matter what. If you have read the previous books, which you should to know more of the town residents, even I would want the people of Silence coming in to help wherever is needed.
Another terrific and feel good story by Freya Barker. Make plans so you can sit and read this book in one sitting. It will seriously suck you in to the end.
Guilty Silence is the third book in Freya Barker’s series taking place in Silence, in the middle of nowhere USA …well, in a small-town American town Silence in Washington state. I love how Freya gives us a glimpse into the next book at the end of the previous book so I could not wait to get my hands on Hugo and Bess’ book and oh boy, did she live up to my expectations and more! Freya tells the story from dual first person perspectives and it was so interesting to hear their inner thoughts while their relationship moved from the friends’ zone to lovers … and the sex scenes … you will leave wishing that your honey would learn couple of things if they ever agreed to read the books we read … I also appreciate that Freya writes about mature characters that have been around the block couple of times so they have stories to tell! In addition, every Freya’s book always has a number of supporting characters that I leave hoping that maybe one day they will get their own stories or at minimum appear more prominently in following books … In conclusion, we get a story of secrets and betrayal, vengeance and power, family, friendship and love!
Outstanding suspense, scintillating plot, and a group of tenacious characters, this book is not to be missed. I was enthralled from beginning to end!
Chief Deputy Hugo Alexander and coffee shop owner Bess Choi have known each other since they were kids and have been friends for years. She helped get him through the loss of his wife. He isn’t exact sure when he started seeing the sweet coffee shop owner as more than a supportive friend to him & his teenage son but his feelings have definitely changed. He just has to get Bess to see him as more than just a friend. When dangerous events seem to surround Bess, Hugo’s instincts to protect go into overdrive.
Bess is sure her friend and secret crush, Hugo, has her firmly in the friend zone. It’s not until worrisome things start happening around her that she cautiously begins to lower her barriers with him. He’s the only one she trusts to keep her safe. But when she finally reveals all her secrets will he ever trust her again?
I really only have one complaint about this story. It was too short. Or it felt like it was too short. Probably because when I finally got a chance to read it, I pretty much devoured the book. I kept saying, " just one more chapter". Before I knew it there were no more chapters.
Hugo and Bess seemed to fit one another so well. I was able to piece together part of Bess' secret, but did not expect what came out in the big reveal. I could not imagine how she felt when that final situation with her brother came to a conclusion. Hugo's marriage was suspect, but that was a surprise as well.
I liked they way they took care of each other and how Bess and Carson's relationship was so close. I could have kept reading about them. Of course, that tease we were provided with Tessa and Clem's story really left me wanting more. It's going to be hard to wait the the next Silence book. Maybe I'll just go back and start over with Phil and Brant's book.

Hugo and Bess’ story is full of small-town drama, suspense, surprises, and the beginnings of a beautiful family unit. Bess grew up in Silence but moved away so that her mom could have better job opportunities. She always loved Silence and moved back. Although Hugo is older, he remembers Bess from her youth. Bess is your caring soft-hearted community member who uses food as her love language, but she is also a very private person. Hugo is your typical alpha male sheriff who shuns away from emotions but is truly a closet softie. When getting together, you get an explosive relationship in the best way. The drama that surrounds Bess and the secrets she has kept from her best friends are heartbreaking. As always, Ms. Barker does a fantastic job with character development and storytelling that makes you invested in this town of Silence and all of its characters. You simply get lost in the story and emotional rollercoaster, making the book difficult to put down. I can’t wait for the next book!
Guilty Silence hits all the marks for me! I love romantic suspense stories especially with slightly over forty characters finally getting their chance at love and Bess Choi and Hugo Alexander are perfect for one another as they not only juggle the twenty year old secret that resurfaces and brings danger along with it to the small town of Silence, but they are working on their budding romance. They had an easy chemistry about them and played off each other’s strengths. Bess is the successful owner of the town’s popular coffee shop and everything was going smoothly until her brother is released from jail and the secret they have been holding comes back to haunt them. She is happy living in Silence and will do what is necessary to stay in the town she loves. Hugo is the Chief Deputy in town and has a quiet strength about him that I loved and it was easy to see how he would do what was necessary to protect those he cares for and Bess was quickly becoming someone special to him. I loved these two together and thoroughly enjoyed their journey to their happily ever after.
I love the way Freya Barker breathes life into her protagonists. What's more, this series is set in a small town whose unique microclimate she captures perfectly. Everyone knows each other, gossip is just a doorstep away, but sometimes “we've known each other forever” can turn into love. Just like with Bess and Hugo. Unfortunately, Bess is haunted and threatened by her past, which she would have liked to leave behind. It's understandable that she wants to keep this a secret, but sometimes I wished she would be more open with Hugo. What makes Freya Barker's books special is their ordinariness. All of her characters live their everyday lives with rough edges and conflicts and have already experienced a lot in their lives. These aren't 22-year-olds with model figures, but people I can identify with in no time at all. I'm already lost in this story all day long and can't stop reading.
The crime story is once again super exciting, with great twists and resolutions that I didn't expect. A great series with likeable protagonists!
Hugo is a widower, single father to a teenage son and a deputy. Bess is independent and the owner of local bakery/coffee shop "Strange Brew". We got a little peak into the tension building and friendship between these two in the previous books in this series. Hugo and Bess have fallen into the friendzone with neither one sure how to move out of it or if the other wants to. Bess gets a phone call from her brother who she hadn't talked to in years which threatens to not only implode her new life but put her in danger. When recent events prove that tomorrow might not be guaranteed Hugo and Bess start to open up about how they're feeling and their pasts. I absolutely was cheering on this couple and was surprised as they started opening up to each other what they both had been through. I was quickly invested and couldn't put down this romantic suspense until I knew how it ended. I really enjoy seeing all the characters from this series as they interact, assist and support each other.
I have always enjoyed this author’s stories so was very happy to be chosen to review an ARC. While I liked the last half of this book, I struggled with the first half.
Bess was dealing with vandalism at her coffee shop as well as the secret of her brother being a member of a Triad and its possible repercussions. It seemed her head was fully focused on those issues with little to no room for romantic thoughts. Chief Deputy Hugo was certainly there to help Bess but I felt he was pushy in trying to make Bess see him in a romantic light. Given this, I felt the romance fell flat. Maybe their relationship was developed in previous books which I have not read. Bess gradually came around (since she had always had a crush on him) which is why I enjoyed the second half.
I really enjoyed the suspense aspect and am hoping the significance of the mystery man who appears towards the end becomes revealed.
I received a free copy from Booksprout. This is my unbiased review.
