I was so lucky to read this book as a beta reader last year! When I was graced with the opportunity to ARC read it as well, I couldn’t resist!
@jynamaengbooks has created such a wonderful and strong FMC in Arla! Her growth from the first book-“A Kingdom of Whispers”-only adds to the story as a whole!
The struggle between the Low Borns and High Borns reaches a fever pitch when it’s discovered that Whispers (think magic powers) can be given to anyone. Will Arla be able to save her kingdom and the ones she loves?
I finished this book yesterday, but had to sit on it before writing the review. It really moved me. It was an emotional read in a way I didn't expect. See, I had loved the fluffy, gentle love of the first book; Arla and Leo were the quintessential grumpy/sunshine for me. Entering this second book with such expectations was... Brutal. I have to admit I missed that fluffiness for a good portion of it, like an ageing mother who struggles to see their children grow. And the characters do grow, so much; through conflict and difficulties harsher and more nuanced than I'd expect from a book aimed a younger audience. At times, I genuinely doubted they would make it, and the ending warranted a cry. I've held Arla and Leo close to my heart for a while and it won't be easy to let them go.
I went into this with high hopes and wasn't disappointed, it didn't go in the direction I expected which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I love the character growth and I think it was beautifully written.
