Letting her in was the most dangerous decision he ever made. In 1998, Jake Jackson has built a world designed to keep pain out—quiet, solitary, and barricaded from the life he once fled. A small-town mechanic with a fractured past, Jake believes distance and silence are the best ways to survive. Then a fire, a stray dog, and a woman with nowhere else to go disrupt the careful order of his existence.
Charlotte is practical, exhausted, and barely scraping by in a world that seems determined to keep her down. When she moves into Jake’s secluded home, their temporary arrangement ignites an unexpected spark—one that brings warmth, safety, and the terrifying possibility of true connection.
For the first time, Jake begins to believe he might be worthy of love.
But his past doesn’t stay buried.
Returning to the hometown he fled, Jake finds himself ensnared by a web of unfinished business and long denied truths. As old wounds reopen and loyalties splinter, he must confront the shadows of his past. With secrets multiplying and trust eroding, a single, fear-driven choice sets off a chain of consequences that shatters the fragile bond he’s begun to forge with Charlotte.
Where the Night Winds Wail is a haunting, emotionally charged exploration of shame, obsession, and the devastating cost of silence. Set against the introspective backdrop of small-town Ontario in 1998, this novel unfolds through multiple perspectives, delving into the complex tapestry of love, family secrets, and the tenuous line between redemption and ruin.
For readers who crave character-driven literary fiction steeped in psychological depth, Where the Night Winds Wail will echo like a mournful song that refuses to be forgotten.

A fascinating and psychological exploration of what it is like to return to the setting of our earlier life after decades away. So often we think of trauma as being done with, scarred over, but this book digs into the idea that the wounds we flee from can remain open when we don't hae the courage to face them. A moody, windswept piece of pure Canadiana. Wonderful read!
This piece of literary fiction was a character driven novel that touched on shame, the cost of silence and family secrets. Something we all can identify within ourselves. I do enjoy Sandy Day's insights into the complexities of the human experience.
I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway. I really liked the story and I hope there is more to come. Some of the story, especially at the beginning, felt very disjointed. Time would jump with no explanation of how they got there and it was a bit confusing.
I went into this expecting a classic psychological thriller, but what surprised me most was how literary and emotionally layered it felt. Where the Night Winds Wail is deeply character-driven, focusing on loneliness, shame, trauma, and the frightening vulnerability that comes with letting someone love you.
Jake, especially, is written with so much quiet complexity. His relationship with Charlotte unfolds with a tenderness that makes the darker elements hit even harder. The prose has a haunting, reflective quality that perfectly suits the small-town setting and the story’s emotional weight.
This isn’t just a suspense novel—it’s a meditation on isolation, fear, and the cost of emotional silence. Melancholy, intimate, and deeply human.
I will start by saying the author made me interested in the main characters. Sandy also did a decent job in writing individual scenes.
However, so many things happen because the plot needed it to happen and they had the Exposition Dump Truck come by to drop off all the convenient plot devices. My wife kept reading after I did and apparently the plot just gets worse. I really tried, but once Raven is introduced, my interest plummeted and I stopped caring.
Bottom Line: interesting characters, good indicidual scene writing, poor plot building.
While I did like the main characters, there were too many cpd and info dumps. The auther seems to be great at creating individual scenes but completely missed the mark on stitching them together in a cohesive story. The amount of info dump of stuff that did not help the story progress was terrible. Then, the section formatting was not a good choice for this book. Overall, very glad I got this book in a giveaway as I would have felt it was a waste of money. The only reason I do not feel I wasted my time is because my husband and I got something to vent about that was not related to our own life.
This book was fantastic!! A well written story of a young man, Jake, who tries to outrun his past, start a new future, just to be called back home when his mom is sick. When he returns everything starts to unravel and Jake finds himself in quite a mess. I was not able to put this one down, it was so good!!
So beautifully written. Kept me reading and on the edge of my seat for the whole thing. I loved it all but the ending really works in this book. It will say with me for a long time.
This is a contemporary small town story that starts out with a stray dog in need of a home. I love that the dog is what connected the two main characters. A very well written story full of emotion and some unexpected twists and turns.
