3.5 I recognize Samedi but I’m not sure what precisely the author was going for linking her character to that tradition. Probably meant to be mystically exotic. I thought there was going to be more significance to Xia showing up a week before Joey’s birthday on Friday the 13th. It was never explained how Xia knew Joey’s full name and why she wrote it down or why he was the only person she could communicate with. It seems like the author was going for a much more supernatural story initially and somewhere along the way she pivoted away from that and made it, more scientific…I guess. And even with that I still don’t understand why the wind affected Xia - that made zero sense and was glaringly glossed over, and it all wrapped up waaay too neatly and wildly amicable. (I mean, COME ON!). Did I still enjoy it? Absolutely. Would I have probably loved it if my parents had bought it for me like I begged them to back in 1993? Definitely.

The fact that I’m just now reading this makes me sad because I know I would have loveddddd it so much in middle school! Great book had me on the edge of my seat.
I read this book when I was in elementry school, My mom made me read it to her day care kids. I eventually forgot what it was about and saw it on my bookshelf and read it. This book is for elementry kids, they would enjoy it.
This is one of my favorite books from my youth. I read it so many times, I had it memorized. In fact, this may very well be the book that set my on the path of loving paranormal romances! It's a sweet and fun story with touches of adventure, romance, fantasy, and humor.
