'Hanuman: Sacred Words for the Modern Mind' is not just a devotional compilation, but to me, it's an experience that feels far more layered, almost like entering a space where language, faith, and understanding quietly come together.

The completeness of this book totally took me aback. Sunanda Verma and Vimlesh Verma, gather all the scripts that magnified our understanding and devotion for Lord Hanuman. From a mesmerising text of the Sundarkand and Hanuman Chalisa to the Stotram and Arti dedicated to praising the Lord as one cohesive volume, this strengthens any reader's spiritual connection, making it deeply felt and reconnecting them with their roots. The inclusion of Hindi text alongside English translations and phonetic transliterations immediately stood out to me as it felt inclusive, thoughtful, and deeply aware of the modern reader who may feel spiritually inclined but linguistically distant.

The authors have made this book, really accessible making it feel easy and understandable. Often the spiritual texts have a certain rigidity of expression and this book, alongside the author's research makes the book reachable by all age groups. I felt a balance, with this book. The transliterations helped me engage with pronunciation, while the English meanings allowed me to pause, reflect, and internalise rather than just recite mechanically. In many ways, it transformed the act of reading into something slower and more intentional.
What I genuinely admired was the contextual layer the authors added. The book doesn’t just present verses—it gently answers questions that many readers, including myself, often carry but rarely articulate. Why is Sundarkand called “Sundar”? Why did Tulsidas compose the Hanuman Chalisa? What makes Hanuman such a central figure of devotion? These explorations added depth and made the reading experience feel intellectually engaging alongside being spiritually comforting.
Emotionally, I found this book grounding. The narrative and simplicity of presentation eased the heaviness of reading a spiritual book, making me immersed in the text. There was no scope for rushing, it began to feel like a conversation- quiet, reflective, and deeply personal. Hanuman, often revered as Sankatmochan, emerges not just as a mythological figure here, but as a symbol of resilience, devotion, and inner strength.

The book expects patience and willingness to engage in the journey thoughtfully. For me, that very depth is what makes it authentic and stays true to its essence instead of simplifying itself for easy consumption.

Some books are simply meant to be read, while others are meant to be experienced. Hanuman: Chalisa, Sundarkand, Sacred Texts with Hindi–English Meaning for Daily Reading belongs to the latter category. It is not just a collection of sacred verses; it feels like a thoughtful guide that helps readers understand, reflect upon, and connect with the spiritual depth of Lord Hanuman’s teachings.

What makes this book truly special is the way it brings together several revered texts dedicated to Hanuman ji in one place. From the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundarkand to Hanuman Bahuk, Bajrang Baan, and other sacred compositions, the book carefully presents each prayer with its Hindi and English text. Alongside this, readers are given clear translations in both languages, making the verses accessible and meaningful for a wide range of readers.

One of the most engaging aspects of the book is how it goes beyond simple translation. The authors thoughtfully explain the context, stories, and deeper significance behind the verses. These narrative touches add warmth and clarity, helping readers understand not only what the prayers say but also why they have held such importance for centuries.

Beyond its structure and content, the language of the book deserves special mention. The writing is concise yet expressive, making complex spiritual ideas feel clear and approachable.

Whether one approaches it as a devotee, a seeker, or simply someone curious about sacred literature, the book offers both spiritual insight and literary richness.

For those who consider Lord Hanuman a protector, guide, and friend, this book is truly a treasure. It is the kind of work that one would want to keep close at hand, revisit often, and perhaps even pass on to the next generation as a meaningful spiritual inheritance.

Hanuman: Sacred Words for the Modern Mind positions itself as a bridge between scripture and the contemporary reader, between devotion and accessibility. Rather than reinterpret or fictionalise Hanuman, the book gathers together the sacred texts associated with him and presents them in a format designed for modern engagement.

At its core, this is a compilation and reference work. The book brings together key texts related to Hanuman, offering the original verses alongside Hindi and English translations, phonetic transliterations, and contextual explanations. For readers who struggle to access traditional texts because of language barriers, this structure is one of the book’s strongest features. It allows the reader to move comfortably between devotion, understanding, and reflection without feeling overwhelmed.

What works particularly well is the book’s clarity of intent. It does not attempt to modernise Hanuman by reshaping his character to fit contemporary sensibilities. Instead, it focuses on making existing scripture more navigable. The supplementary sections, addressing questions such as the significance of the Sundarkanda, the origins of the Hanuman Chalisa, or the reasoning behind certain rituals, add quiet depth and help situate devotion within a broader philosophical and cultural framework.

I'm someone who begins each day with Hanuman Chalisa on my lips and deep devotion in my heart for lord Hanuman. Reading this book felt less like turning pages and more like an act of prayer. Lord Hanuman has always been my guiding force. So, when a book claims to bring together all sacred texts about Hanuman ji in one place, it becomes essential reading.

This book is divine beauty. It gathers the most important scriptures dedicated to Lord Hanuman, from the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundarkand to Hanuman Bahuk and more. It is invaluable, and quite accessible. Each sacred text is presented with Hindi and English translations, as well as phonetic transliterations, allowing readers from all backgrounds to recite and understand the prayers. The inclusion of an index of dohas and chaupais from the Sundarkand is especially thoughtful, making it easy to find particular verses for daily recitation or study.

Beyond the sacred verses, the book delves into the fascinating spiritual and historical context of these texts. The book goes beyond mere translation. It feels like a guided journey into Hanuman ji's divine world.

This is a sacred companion. For anyone who calls lord Hanuman their protector and friend, this book is a treasure to be kept close to the heart, I could keep it in the temple in my home.

Hanuman, Sacred Words For The Modern Mind" is a translation of the original texts, dohas, chaupais, of the Sundarkand, the fifth canto of the Shri Ramacharitamanas by Tulsidas. It focuses on the bravery of Shri Hanuman.

The word Sundar meaning beautiful is said to have been given to this canto as every event in this Kanda serves as an example of dignity and grace and contains events that are deeply moving. It is also possible that it was named this because Ashoka Vatika, where Devi Sita was held captive by Ravana was on the Sundar Parbat of Trikoot Mountains. Likewise there might be other reasons that might have given this section its name.

The beauty of this book is that every original Sanskrit text is translated in simple English and colloquial Hindi.

Some sections of the book towards the end like hanumatstrotam, anjanayegayatri mantra are not translated. Otherwise a good book if you want to learn about things written for and about Hanuman.
