The Dowager's Garden #3

Marrying Lady Marigold

Rate this book
She is a widow who believes she's unworthy of second chances.

He is a rake whose only loyalty is to himself.

Myra Everly lost everything when her husband died: her home, her security, and any hope that a man could truly want her. Forced to accept charity from the Dowager Countess of Fairfax, the very woman who arranged her disastrous first marriage, she wants nothing more than to disappear into the wallpaper while she waits for the dowager to choose her next husband.

Amos Wright, the most notorious American rake in London, is not known for his charity work. But when he agrees to finance the dowager's charity ball, he has one demand: the reclusive widow Myra must work alongside him. Suddenly he's everywhere she turns. Charming. Devastating. Completely inappropriate. And for the first time in her life, Myra finds herself truly desired by a man who makes no promises and offers no apologies for what he is.

But when the terrible secret about her late husband's untimely demise is revealed, Myra must confront the mountain of lies built up around her. When the smoke clears and all is laid bare, can two people haunted by their own demons find the courage to claim a second chance at happiness?

A scorching closed-door romance perfect for fans of unapologetic rakes, second chances, and heroines who deserve their happily ever after.

Book 3 in The Dowager's Garden series. Each book is a complete standalone with its own swoon-worthy love story.

I have devoured this story! I loved the writing, the characters and redemption arc

Myra, is recently widowed, and with an unfortunate turn of events, has no roof over her head. She meets Amos Wright and gets her world turned upside down.

I really enjoying Myras character, and this story told from her point of view. She has spunk, but is still struggling to find her way and place in society. She is bold when she needs to be, especially with Amos.
Amos is a flirt, rake and complete charmer. But under that facade is a broken man in need of healing and redemption.

The relationship between Myra and Amos is full of ups and downs, left turns and poor decisions. The lies, betrayals, and hidden affairs all come to the light in the most heartbreaking of ways for Myra. As she grapples with the uncertainty of her future and broken heart to try and make sense of it all. The road to redemption and forgiveness for Myra and Amos was full of pain and changes. I loved the way their love was present through it all.

I seriously enjoyed this one, I was given this ARC at the right time and devoured it. My love for regency romance has been reignited. Thank you so much Sariah for this ARC.

🔥 Heat level: Closed-door
🫢 Language: none

CW/TW: hidden affairs, suicide mention of side character (off page), Substance use, mental health issues (trauma and depression), no cheating between the main characters.

I’m going to start this review off by saying this is not your grandma’s regency romance ❤️‍🔥 This book had me screaming, gasping, BLUSHING, and yelling from page one to the end 😳 It’s gritty, it’s dark, it’s messed up, and I LOVED IT 💗 Please please PLEASE read the content warnings before, Sariah Drake does a fantastic job of clearly stating what the book includes 🫶🏼

Myra. For me she made this book 📖 she begins as a wallflower widow 🧡 desperate and hurting down to her soul 💔 I loved watching her gain confidence in herself, and final feel valued 🥹 There were a couple times where I wished she would just YELL AT THE MAN, but then again, her characterization was so perfect and she would never do that 🫶🏼 (I did though. I yelled at him a lot 😁)

Amos. Guys he’s bad 🙈 He’s naughty 😈 He is a scoundrel 🚬 And he KNOWS IT 🙊 From the moment you meet him everything in you says RUN, but he is so magnetic you can’t help but be drawn in 🫣 I absolutely adored how this man was OBSESSED with Myra 😍 And it’s not healthy, mans is literally obsessive and does nothing halfway 😂 I loved watching his growth, although when the ✨ scene ✨ happens I was ready for her to pack up and NEVER SPEAK TO HIM AGAIN 😤

This book shows what happens when you let passion and lust overtake your morals, and every character struggles with it 🥀 These two characters are messy. The side characters are 👏🏻 MESSY 👏🏻 They have flaws and they are evident in every interaction. But in the end, the overcome it all in a beautiful way.

I got to around 70% and THREW my kindle I was so mad 😡 but somehow Sariah Drake pulled through, and I immediately bought the first book in the series once I finished because I might be addicted to her brand of emotional rollercoasters 🎢 😂

Again, please read the content warnings 🫶🏼

⚠️ CW: the author has a better list, but here are a few. The book is closed door but deals with HEAVY topics of infidelity, affairs (MMC is a RAKE and discusses his lovers and affairs and is proud of them- not in depth) addiction, su*cide, body dysmorphia, and there are scenes with immoral situations that vice, pride, and lust lead you into ⚠️

Is inappropriate flirting my new favorite mircrotrope??? yes. yes. I think it is!

Did I know what this book was about when I started? yes. Did I forget? also, yes. Really glad I did, because there were so many surprises!!!

I'm obsessed. This book was such a new take on regency that I personally haven't read.

Mrs. Everly was matched to her husband Mr. Everly ten years ago. He recently passed and left her nothing. She calls on the aid of her previous matchmaker the dowager Fairfax. While there she is pushed into the shadows and told she needs to fall in line.

Amos Wright is a notorious rake. He is handsome and outspoken and crude. He meets Mrs. Everly and leaves quite the impression. He is a business man who has been very successful.

I was truly kept on my toes throughout this whole book. There was twist after twist that I didn't see coming. I loved how forbidden their love was and the rebellious side of Myra. I love how she finally acted on what she wanted, because she had been so overlooked. I like how Amos was smitten by her and she called him out at every turn. I loved their shared love of music and books. Their letter passing was so sweet and where their love bloomed.

The ending was wild and so well done. I love a good redemption arc and the epilogue was everything. These two really captured my heart and I loved their journey. This story was full of forbidden love, pursuing, healing love, and inappropriate flirting. 😏

Mrs. Strickland is the WORST friend and can kick rocks!!!!!!!

"But a wife does hold influence over her household and her husband's regard. The facts are simple enough. You were transformed once by the dowager. I have seen the records. Yet you no longer maintain that standard of care in your appearance. If similar neglect occurred in your marriage, the outcome follows naturally. One cannot ignore upkeep and expect prosperity, whether in appearance or circumstance."

"You hide your talent behind safe, boring choices,"

He played her as skillfully as he played the pianoforte itself, each movement calculated to unsettle her.

I hope you have thought about our duet at the pianoforte and what we spoke of. I have sent you sheet music from a few of my favorite composers for you to practice, should you desire it. I do believe you will find my taste to be impeccable, and that you will have no choice but to accept that I am correct on the subject.

And I do not do so selfishly, but out of a desire to share my interests with you, as you have indeed shared your interests with me. After our encounter at Lady Lyndrow's ball, I recalled the books you had on your person when we first met on the London streets. I took it upon myself to acquire and read several of them.

I found them charming, but lacking in certain elements ... much like the music you had chosen to play. And so, in an effort to share in your interests properly, I have acquired some books I believe would be suitable to your tastes. I cannot wait for you to share your opinions of them with me.

"Passion of the heart seeks the good of its beloved. Passion of the flesh seeks only its own satisfaction."

“I want you.”

“Because I am a maddening man who smokes like a chimney and speaks out of turn far too often.” His glance brushed hers. “It takes a particular woman to tolerate my company.”

“Oh, that is quite the question. But I shall attempt to put it into words. The first thing I must establish is that you are strikingly beautiful. That is, of course, a given, so I will not bore you with the particulars you are already privy to. Secondly, I have noticed that you are prone to a shy disposition, but when you are in my presence, there is a fire in you that flares up. You lean into me when you talk, as close as you will permit yourself, only to admonish me most prettily. I do admit, it drives me a particular sort of mad that follows me late into the evenings. You have captured my attention in a way I did not anticipate and cannot seem to shake, no matter how I have tried.”

“I thought if I occupied myself with other diversions, I might forget you. But you are not easily forgettable.”

"You are the most powerful creatures I have ever been acquainted with."

“You know, when you sent me those books of yours, all scribbled upon, it made me think that you crave to make your passionate mark on someone’s world, whether that be fictional or otherwise. And, in reading your innermost thoughts, you have certainly made your mark upon mine.”

"Are you usually a jealous man, sir?" "No." The word came out harsh. "For you, however, I make an exception."

"Perhaps that I am drawn to things I should not be."

"Your clever plan has failed," she said. "For I cannot see anything."

"When I arrived here today, in this house where I am not welcome, and I found you in this conservatory, sitting there reading the book I sent you, I could not help myself—"

"If I am to be loyal to anything— anyone— in this life, my only wish is that it could be you. Only say the word and I would make you my sun, and leave every frail and rotten thing that has grown in my life to the wayside. You have made your mark on me, not in the margins of my life, but down to the very core of who I am."

"You could be crippled or barren or wrinkled and grey and it would not matter one bit to me. I could be celibate for the rest of my days with you and not regret my decision in the least as long as I can be in your presence."

"Myra Everly, I love you. As much as any man can muster. Eternity could pass and I would not love you any less."

There must be something wrong with her, to love so deeply a man who was utterly lost.

"You should say no. You should say no because you deserve a husband who is whole. You deserve a husband who is your age and of a sound mind. You deserve a husband whose fortune was not built upon vice. You deserve all the stars in the sky and all the happiness this earth has to offer— all the creature comforts and the physical passions that only a healthy, young man can muster. So you must say no. You must."

"Because firstly, my flesh is weak. I have never held any semblance of control over my desires, and I suspect I desire you more than any man has ever wanted a member of the fairer sex, all love stories, poems, and ballads be damned. Secondly, I cannot for a moment longer be in your presence and not know the answer. And lastly, it is because I love you more than is right. There are times, like exactly this moment, that my heart might give out from the force of it. And thus, I selfishly wish you could be mine forever, despite my countless shortcomings."

He had sunk into her skin, made a home in her bones, and she could not rid herself of him if she tried. It would take an amputation of her very heart.

This regency romance was filled with deeply felt emotion, inner struggles, Bridgerton vibes without any of the spice, overcoming vices, and how love can bring one to freedom and redemption.

Myra Everly is left feeling lost and unsure of her future, after the sudden death of her husband of nine years. A mysterious man is seen in a jovial mood at her husband’s funeral, and this sighting feels odd to Myra. Somehow, her now deceased husband’s solicitor cannot get her widows portion sorted out and the loneliness Myra carried through her marriage weighs heavily on her. When afternoon tea with her closest friend ends with Myra being turned out of her own house into the streets, due to debts unpaid by her husband, Myra finds herself stranded. Turning to the Dowager who once helped Myra secure her marriage to her former husband, Myra’s benefactor sets out to plan a charitable event, and the man seen at the funeral, Amos Wright, is financially backing the event to raise funds for a widows home. Not only does Myra have to be the one to convince the Ton to donate their money, she must also keep the American businessman Amos at arms length, as his reputation for his rakish ways and his underhanded business ventures keep him ostracized from polite society. Associating with him would jeopardize any potential good marriage matches for Myra. Can Myra keep her unexpected feelings and intrigue for Amos at bay? Or will his charming, somewhat devious, and troubled past be the wall that separates them forever?

This story touched on loneliness in a loveless marriage, feeling neglected, to how true passionate love of the heart and soul outweighs the lure of worldly enticements. Amos is a deeply wounded and conflicted character that really pulled at my heart strings. He hid his true life struggles and the vices that held him captive under his charm and easygoing nature. Myra brought out the depth and truth of what he truly had to overcome and face, while Amos showed Myra that she is worthy of being loved, cherished, and adored endlessly for the woman that she is.

I can’t wait to read the other books in this series!

"The passions of the heart endure, my darling."

🏵I have received an ARC of this book and I'm willingly leaving this review🏵

Widowed and destitute, Myra Everly is forced to depend on the dowager who arranged her disastrous marriage. Hoping to remain unnoticed while awaiting another match, she instead finds herself working beside notorious American rake Amos Wright, whose bold desire awakens feelings she’s never known.

But when the truth about her late husband’s death surfaces, Myra must face the lies of her past, and decide if she and Amos are brave enough to claim a second chance at love.

This was a really beautiful story. All I wanted was to hug Myra. Poor girl has been through so much and deserved only peace and love in her life. Since she was put in a desperate situation she accepts any scraps that are given to her. I really didn't like how she was treated by the dowager... ignored, silenced and reduced to being a shadow.

As for Amos... he was charming and seemed like he was really interested in Myra... altough he did a Bennedict Bridgerton and told her to be his mistress. His easy smile hid an awful truth and a vice he thought he had control over. But he did develop genuine feelings for Myra.

In the end it all worked out. But I think I would've liked if he grovelled some more. I mean he did save her by sacrificing himself, but before that moment I wanted for him to pursue her more in order to obtain her forgivness.

Other than that, I really enjoyed this story.

I was not expecting to be as invested in this story and relationship as I was! My heart absolutely broke for Myra, in more ways than one. She was so relatable as a woman in her early 30’s (me) with her thoughts of growing older and her negative self image that we all struggle with at times. It hits you right in the heart strings. Amo’s is immediately intriguing. I’ve always been one for a good redemption arc and that is exactly what we have here. I love the way the author went about telling his story and didn’t shy away from hard topics, while discussing them tastefully. The descriptions in this book were magnificent. I love when i feel like I am there with the characters first hand, because it is described so well! The first half of this book gives you just enough wonder and storyline to keep you guessing and engulfed in the story and then the second half sends you through a roller coaster of emotions and twists. 🥺😲🥰

Also, of note, I am not usually a fan of age gap romances at all, but the ages in this (late 20’s/ late 40’s) made it okay for me and it was done so well that honestly, I forgot there even was a gap! 🙂❤️ Do be prepared for a lot of more serious topics and events going in, but it isn’t all sadness and grief, there is a beautiful storyline that forms.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: alcohol/ drug use, death, suicide (brief mentions, non-detailed), body image issues, brief sexual innuendos, little to no language

Thank you to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book. My review is honest and of my own opinion.

I loved everything about this book! I gave it a solid 4.5 stars! It was a different twist on a Regency Romance. A little of the darker side, without any of the spice.

Myra is left feeling lost and alone after her husband's sudden death. Forced to accept charity from the Dowager Countess of Fairfax, the very woman who arranged her disastrous first marriage. Amos Wright, an American rake, agrees to finance the Dowager's charity ball, on one condition, Myra must work alongside him. He's charming, handsome, and a massive flirt. Myra finds herself desired by a man who is different from typical society.

Myra must sort through her feelings as lies, betrayals, and hidden affairs are made known. Will Myra find her happily ever after?

This is my first read by Sariah Drake. I have since bought her first 2 books in this series. I can't wait to read more of her beautiful stories!

"He had chipped off every piece of ice, had brought her out of her cold lonely existence and showed her a love she could not even begin to name. "

Thank you Sariah Drake for the ARC. All opinions expressed are my own.

I really liked book #1 and 2. (see my review of #1). But I'm sorry to say this one was not of the same caliber as the first two. I didn't like Amos. Never could support his interest in Myra. He was the opposite of a gentleman, his whole demeanor was abhorrent. The author did a great job of handling mental issues in the other books. I thought Amos's issues were the childhood he referenced. caused an inability to trust? Hence the illegitimate kids with different lovers. And he doesn't want Myra for wife but as another lover. When his addiction to opium was revealed about 3/4 of the way through the book, I didn't think there could be any redemption for him. And when the author through literary artifice gives him a path to redemption and thereby is worthy of Myra's love, I was disappointed because it was too easy and too unbelievable. Even with his redemption I did not like Amos.
Having said that, I discovered the author's Afterword. She acknowledged that she chose to create a fantasy redemption for Amos and that it was not realistic, cautions against going into a relationship thinking you can heal or change a person. Bravo to her for including the Afterword.

Another 5 star read from Sariah Drake! Amos and Myra were everything. Total opposites but intrigued by each other immediately. This story had swoony moments and OMG moments! The tension between these two characters was great! Their growth individually and together was 🤌🤌🤌

Tropes:
•age gap
•all the swoon without the spice
•opposites attract
•widow fmc
•reformed rake mmc
•secrets

My favorite quotes:
•”But I swear to you, Myra, darling, I swear on everything I have left—I will spend the rest of my life proving to you that I can be the man you deserve."

•"Myra Everly, I love you. As much as any man can muster. Eternity could pass and I would not love you any less."

•He had sunk into her skin, made a home in her bones, and she could not rid herself of him if she tried. It would take an amputation of her very heart.

Y'all...these Garden books are soooo good!

They are romantic and gritty and real! Sariah's characters are flawed and human and real. I love them! They aren't perfect heroes or heroines, but they are sure are romantic and captivating!

I honestly wasn't sure how I felt about Myra and Amos at first. I'm not a huge fan of the age gap trope but man...once I got into the book, I forgot all about it.

These two quite simply...fit. I love how Amos expanded Myra's isolated world, helped her grow in confidence and showed her a love outside of her books. I also loved how she, in turn, gave Amos something real to be loyal to, to commit to, to love.

Overall, I loved Myra and Amos's love story. The slow burn, enemies to friends to lovers vibes, everything! I mean, a rake and bookish heroine found love...does it really get any better than that?! I don't think so!

Amos, Amos, Amos….. I wanted to throttle him the first half of the book! What a rake! BUT, his character development… *chefs kiss*.

I’ve loved following along the journeys of the Dowager’s Garden. I never know what to expect and am always very pleased by the endings, this book was no different. Sariah Drake does such a fantastic job creating just the right ambiance with just the right characters.

There was some pearl clutching on my part in this book, but no spice! Just lovely!

I really enjoyed reading Marrying Lady Marigold. The relationship between the characters was thoughtfully developed, and the emotional tension felt authentic throughout the story. The writing was immersive. I often felt completely pulled into the atmosphere and the world the author created.

This was my first book by this author, and it definitely won’t be my last. The betrayals genuinely surprised me, and the pacing kept me turning the pages without hesitation. I especially appreciated the character development, particularly the male lead’s growth, which felt natural and well executed.

If you enjoy historical romance with emotional depth, layered relationships, and compelling twists, this is a book you’ll likely appreciate.

Myra Everly was one of the Dowager Countess of Fairfax’s flowers, and a rousing success for the Dowager. Maya’s real life, however, was not the stuff of fairytales. After their wedding, her husband wanted nothing to do with her. After years of neglect and emotional abuse, she has no self-esteem left. When her husband dies and leaves her penniless, her life goes from bad to worse. Her only option is throwing herself on the mercy of the Dowager, who allows her to stay in her house and find her a new husband on the condition that she keeps out of the way and does everything she’s told.
American-born Amos Wright is the most notorious rake in England. For reason’s she can’t fathom, he’s also obsessed with Myra, insinuating himself into her life to the point where she can’t avoid him. When he gets involved with the Dowager’s new charity initiative, Myra, against her better judgement, starts to welcome his friendship, embarking on a secret life that would lose her her place in society if it were ever found out.
Although it’s a closed-door romance, this book is intense. Myra and Amos are broken people. There’s a darkness in their story, between her damaged psyche and his reckless life of women, debauchery and drugs. The beauty of the story is that both of these hurt, damaged people find something worth fighting for in each other. Can they overcome their fears and pain to find the love they both deserve?
Sariah Drake is an incredible writer. I love the Dowager’s Garden series, but this book is special in and of itself. Amos and Myra are the most human characters I’ve ever met in a novel. Their story grabbed me from the very beginning and still hasn’t let go. It’s just magnificent!!
I received an advance copy of this book and am enthusiastically leaving this 5-star review.

Marrying Lady Marigold was everything I envisioned and more!

The writing: Sariah Drake's writing is beyond exquisite, and I've really enjoyed everything I've read from her. The way she can develop a story, coupled with the flowery, breathless melody of her writing, evokes vivid imagery. She is so good and underappreciated!

The story: Myra and Amos' story is the slow-burning, enemies-to-lovers romance story you need to add to your TBR! I loved Myra's character and resonated much with her insecurities. After a difficult, loveless marriage, she wholeheartedly desires to be known and loved by a special sort of fella; I also loved her quirkiness and everything about her sweet, wholesome personality! Amos, on the other hand, became a true gentleman as the story progressed. While I initially thought him to be absolutely insufferable, rude, and brash, he evolved into the perfect match for Myra--the witty dialogue, passion turned into true love, and true devotion for one another!

If you've never picked up a Sariah Drake novel, what are you waiting for?! Truly, I love everything about her books and seeing how her characters develop into selfless heroes and heroines! So excited for the fourth novel in the series releasing soon!

Marrying Lady Marigold by Sariah Drake is when two complete opposites are thrown together and sparks fly.

This book was extremely fast-paced with little room to breathe between the pages. The book was so breath taking I had to finish the entire book in one day. From the very first page there was an extreme amount of tension, from relationships with friends and relationships with strangers. This whole book really made you think about how far we have come as women being able to be independent and work a job. I felt sorry for the FMC in this book because she could and couldn't do "XYZ" because she was a Lady.

💌Widow & Rake
💌Forbidden Loves
💌Love Letters
💌Healing Trauma
💌Grumpy/Sunshine
💌Second Chances

This book built layer upon layer on trauma, the inner workings of the heart, and finding one's true happiness. I love how the author gave us the real phrase "The truth will always come to light." There were so many parts where the truth that came out where FMC kept being punched while being down, there was no time for room for her to breathe. The reactions of the FMC would be how I would react. In regards to the MMC, you can't help but fall in love with him too. I loved the golden retriever attitude that he had and the truthfulness he had. I think this was Sariah's best yet.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants an amazing regency romance.

Thank you Sariah Drake for the free book.

I picked up a little historical romance as a palette cleanser between the fantasy series I’m planning to read and I was not disappointed!

A sheltered young woman who was recently widowed and cast out on the streets meets a middle aged American scoundrel with hidden vices. She should avoid him to protect her reputation, but she cannot stay away. Attraction develops, secrets come to light, and betrayals are revealed.

The writing in this book was good, the pacing was excellent, and the plot was engaging. Myra, the FMC, is a very relatable character. She is insecure, especially about her appearance, after years of being undesired in her marriage. She doubts her self worth. Both things most of us women can relate to. Amos is charming, free spirited, and confident. The opposite of Myra in all areas. However, like all playboys, his behavior is masking something deeper.

If you’re a sucker for the “bad boy” who needs fixing, the regency time period, an age gap, forbidden love, a redemptjin arc, and happily ever after, then this is for you! This book was full of banter that had me smiling, lots of innuendos, and some twists at the end that genuinely surprised me! It’s a quick, easy read that will keep you engaged!

This was my first Sariah Drake novel! I’ve had her second novel in this series on my TBR, but I had the pleasure of arc reading for this one.

Tragedy had riddled Myra’s past, including the death of her family and her husband. So many secrets were hidden from her, and it made me so sad for her to find out the answers the way she did. I know I would be completely heartbroken if I experienced what she did. Amos & his flirting were enjoyable for the most part, but I wasn’t a huge fan of his rakish ways. I’m glad he had a redemption arc, but he still didn’t treat Myra with a ton of respect during their time together. His sacrifices for her did show his love & I’m glad we got to see a sweeter side to him.

This book could be triggering for some, with affairs, substance abuse, body image issues and depression referenced in the writing. Sariah does provide an website link for you to check content warnings at the front of the book.

It was a good historical romance with focus on the woman’s place & limitations in that time period. I would recommend this book to regency lovers!

Thanks Sariah for the ARC! All thoughts are my own and no positive review was required.

If you like regency read this book. If you like seeing a bad boy falling for a good girl, read this book. If you love a slow burn romance, read this book. If you want to see a second chance for a character who deserves it, read this book. If you believe music can heal your heart, read this book. Just trust me and read this book.

I was concerned that I would have trouble with this novel because it is book three in a series that I have yet to read. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how well done this was. I was not lost at all by reading this one before the others. I now want to read the first two books and plan to read the next one in this series when it is released. This was my first novel by Sariah Drake and definitely won't be my last.

Please check the triggers that the author has graciously provided at the beginning of "Marrying Lady Marigold". There are tough themes throughout this story, but also redemption and hope. Although this is a closed door romance, it is not YA (young adult) fiction.

Thank you, Sariah Drake for allowing me to read and review your novel! It was a delight to read that kept me up way past my bedtime.

Myra and Amos’s story is one that I will not forget for a while. Most stories are “fluff” reads. This one is a beautifully crafted story of loss, grief, feelings of worthlessness, loneliness and love. Though the subjects are heavy, they are written in such a compassionate way as to not make the reader uncomfortable . The emotions will be there, but not to the extent of destroying you. The twists and turns made my head spin, especially when John’s actions come to light. Amos is such a difficult man to place in the “hero” role, but behind the facade is a heart looking for love. I enjoyed Myra’s story and how she found within herself the strength she needed to face her future. The Dowager was definitely prickly this time around and Harrow….well, she just scares me! Thoroughly enjoyed it, those at times hard to read. Well worth the time.

I always know that when I pick up a book by Sariah Drake that I will be swept away into a world of delicious Regency romance. Marrying Lady Marigold may be my new, most favorite story from this gifted author. Drake allows the reader to inhabit the characters and their world. There is something so real and passionate in her writing that makes her work stand out from a typical romance.

This story about the lonely widow, Myra, and the wild, out-of-control rake Amos took my breath away. The story simmers with sexy tension without ever crossing an appropriate line. Her descriptions of settings are exquisite, and the plot twists are surprising. The dramatic third act of the book makes it impossible to put it down. Drake always gets us to the HEA despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles that face the characters. Whew. I LOVED the book.

It’s hard to put into words how I feel about this book. I was absolutely glued to my seat, yet on the fence of how I wanted the ending to be.
Myra Everly, a.k.a. Marigold, was one of the Dowager's Garden young ladies. She was matched and married within six months of being under the Dowager's care. Unfortunately, it was not a happy marriage and now she finds herself widowed and homeless.
Amos Wright is known as a rake, shrewd businessman, and a scoundrel. He is deceiving and untrustworthy.
This story kept me guessing throughout with its twists and turns, not knowing who to believe or will there be a happily ever after. I was impressed how well the author maneuvered around some heavy and delicate subject matter. I loved the way it all came together.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Marrying Lady Marigold

Book 3 in a series, but they don't need to be read in order, IMO.

I received and ARC and am reviewing because I enjoy this series.

Sariah also deals with unconventional and hard topics in her books, and this is no exception.

A widow left with literal nothing and relying on charity.

A man struggling with vices *tw: addiction and substance abuse*

An unexpected atrraction and the journey to redemption.

While this book does have a happily ever after and a reformed addict, Sariah also takes the time to show how the draw never leaves completely and addresses the reality of addiction in her notes at the end.

This story is like the others in the series, a romantic story that deals with a hard topic in a very thoughtful way.

While I found the book a little hard to get into at the start, I continued and the second half of the book paid of greatly. The book takes some twisted turns, some not wholly unexpected but others are and have you reflecting back on the clues given. The narrative tackles two damaged mature people who find themselves drawn to each other but not only do they have to struggle against societies rigid codes, but their own demons. The characters are all well realised and portrayed and you find yourself sympathetic to Amos and Myra, rooting for them (especially after the humorous exchange) but also aware there is a darker tension bubbling underneath. I enjoyed the setting with the Dowager's Flower Garden, especially as it evolved from a matchmaker focused community. The characters of the dowager and her assistant were more entertaining than the main characters. I even enjoyed the debutante who almost got into a scandal more than the couple.

The FMC was dull for most of the book before she stood up for herself. The MC was cocky and annoying. His big reveal made him more sympathetic but his turnaround was unrealistic. People don't change that fast or easily.

The book was well written and edited so there was nothing to pull me out of the story technically but the romance didn't grab me.

3.5⭐

This was an interesting read. It was quite different from the regency romance book I've read so far.
Most characters in this book are deeply flawed in their own ways but have a redemption arc.
I just felt that Amos seemed to have pretty strong feelings for Myra almost too quickly. Maybe more details about the communication they had in their letters would have helped with that.
Overall, it is a very well-paced book and was a quick read.

Even though it is clean, I would advice readers to go through the content warnings before deciding whether this one is for you.

This story is a little different from the norm of regency. There is an age gap that really isn’t too important. You get a sense on how widows were treated, especially those without any financial security. The FMC finds herself free from her first husband, but his debts have left her homeless and poor. She seeks help from the dowager who arranged her first marriage. Along the way the MMC shows up and seems be flirting with her, but he is a known rake with hardened business practices. The storyline seems to be based on redemption and second chances. I enjoyed the read.

4.5 ⭐️ rounded up.

One of my favourite Sariah Drake books to date.

The female MC made me want to scream… such a well crafted character.

The MMC… I am a sucker for a reformed rake… and Amos is definitely one of the most unrepentant rogues I have ever seen in a Regency romance. I found myself loving him in spite of myself.

I am never wild about infidelity plots in romance novels but this one did serve a purpose.

Overall, a great read, that I really quite enjoyed.

I received an advance reader copy from the author and my review is an honest one, and left voluntarily.

Widowed Lady Marigold, left with only 1 bag, returns to the Dowager Countess of Fairfax, the matchmaker that had found her her husband. his depravity was observed and became more obvious while he pursued her.
It's an interesting story of the times, both good and bad, as well as redemption with a HEA. Lost 1* only because it spent too long (in my opinion) dwelling on his depravity of increasing depths before turning to more uplifting topics.

Received an ARC and this is my honest, unsolicited review.

A Strategic Survival Tactic

Lady Eleanor’s brashness is her greatest asset, especially when the alternative to a transactional marriage is becoming the third wife to a man twice her age with a suspicious history of spouses "clumsily" falling down stairs. Her deal with Sebastian, the Duke of Wellington, is a refreshingly pragmatic escape. He gains a flourishing estate; she gains a life free from lethal architecture. It is a marriage of convenience where the ledger is far more interesting than a typical courtship.

Second chance romance. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Myra Everly had a very disappointing first marriage that undermined her self confidence. She has to dug deep to find the strength to build a new life after her husband’s sudden death. This book takes a surprising turn introducing her to a jaded but wealthy rake with very unsavory habits. Love finds a way.
