It worked with his granddaughters. Now Daniel MacGregor, powerful patriarch of the MacGregor clan, wants to see his three handsome, eligible—but stubbornly single—grandsons married. So he's found just the women to tempt, tease and torture D.C., Duncan and Ian all the way to the altar. After having successfully meddled in his granddaughters’ lives and matched them with their now husbands, Daniel MacGregor sets his eyes on his grandsons. D.C. MacGregor, Alan & Shelby’s son, is an artist and has recently returned to Washington DC. Duncan Blade, Serena & Justin’s youngest son, is managing the family’s riverboat gambling casino, Comanche Princess. Ian MacGregor, Caine & Diana’s son, is now a lawyer and has joined the family law firm in Boston. Daniel has gotten even cagier as none of them suspect he manipulated the first meetings with the women they’re now interested in pursuing.

With each new book in this series, the stories get stronger and the romances better are crafted. D.C. accompanies Layna Drake to a charitable event thinking he’s doing a favor for a family friend. They are clearly opposites in so many ways but their attraction is immediate and rejected by both. Duncan hires a new headline singer, Cat Farrell (recommended surreptitiously by Daniel), who has an incredible voice and a personality and wit to match the urbane Duncan. They are extremely well suited and the banter is fun. Ian goes to the historic family-owned Brightstone bookstore to pick up books requested by Daniel (of course) and meets with Naomi Brightstone who captures his imagination immediately. He mistakes her shyness for disinterest and it takes a moment for them to find their way.

Each grandson’s story is presented separately so this is akin to three individual novellas. I enjoyed all of them as each had their own charm and unique premises. It was also satisfying to get updates on other family members, including the married granddaughters. This was a welcome change of pace from my mysteries, suspense and family dramas and I look forward to the final book in the series.

On Sunday, The Readventurer challenged us to read a book (or three) as part of their She Made Me Do It feature. Now, you know how I feel about a challenge. If you don't, here's a video that sums it up:
description
Basically, it's on like Donkey Kong. So yup, by later Sunday, I was done with one of the books of the CHALLENGE. Flannery picked a Nora Roberts book for me because whenever she would talk about Nora Roberts as one of her favorite romance authors, my reaction, never having read one of her books, would be, "Her?"

However, with The MacGregor Grooms, Flann promised a wily, matchmaking grandpa and a JFK Jr. There's exactly ONE thing I have in common with Taylor Swift and it's our fascination with the Kennedys -- although mine is more toward those who've actually graduated from high school. Needless to say, I was hooked on this book from the beginning.

Daniel, the grizzled patriarch of the MacGregor clan, is adorrrrrable. I read this after the VP debate so I pictured him as a lovable Joe Biden type. He's devoted to his family and determined to set up his single grandsons. There's D.C. the artist, Duncan the Steve Wynn of riverboats, and Ian the lawyer. The book is divided into 3 parts, with a diary entry by Daniel introducing each part and grandson. The short story format was a great introduction to Roberts' writing style and the characters in this series.

As a whole, I liked the characters and stories. I liked D.C.'s storyline the most, and I would've probably reacted to his father, the former president, the same way Layna did. I was a bit bored by Duncan's storyline and skimmed it until Daniel came for a visit, but it was short enough to keep my attention. Ian, aka the original Harvard Hottie, built a library in his house. Need I say more? What I really liked was the family dynamic. I loved how close-knit they were and how they indulged Grandpa's meddling, even as he blamed poor ol' Grandma for it. I loved that the boys always answered calls from Grandpa with a grin, even when they knew they were the targets of his machinations.

Verdict: Old people can be so sweet!

Daniel is such a memorable, lovable character. I'm reading The MacGregor Brides next for more of his antics. Great rec, Flann! Now that I've read one of your books, I have one thing to say to you and Catie:

This is actually three books wrapped up in one. We have Daniel MacGregor, the patriarch of the MacGregor clan. He has gotten all his children happily married and is now at work on his grandchildren.
He begins with D. C. Daniel knows that the best way to get D. C. interested is to tell him she's wrong for him. D. C. is an artist and although he rarely paints people he convinces Layna to pose for him. Romance ensues, just as Daniel knew it would.
His next victim is Duncan. Duncan Blade is a riverboat gambler. When his grandfather suggests he hire Cat Farrell to sing on his boat, he begins to suspect Daniel is up to his matchmaking again. But when he sees her, Duncan decides to go along with the plan. I really love Cat's character. She's tough but still sweet.
The woman Daniel finds for Ian owns a bookstore. Ian thinks she's a great choice and is all for their romance, he just has to convince her.
These are wonderful love stories! Tons of romance and happily ever afters. I love the MacGregor stories! 😁💕📖

Another good addition to the MacGregor series.
Daniel, our sweet but conniving patriarch is back to his shenanigans again, fixing his three grandsons- DC, Duncan and Ian with Layna, Cat and Naomi respectively.
Three sweet stories of couples who came from completely different background and fall for each other, albeit after fighting some feelings.
One v card, loads of family and babies, one grandpa you can't help but love- made up to a good anthology.
All the reminiscing scenes between Anne and Daniel are heart warming.

On reread, I don't love Ian's story but that's part and parcel with men thinking they know best. D.C. and Duncan's stories continue to work for me, though. I love the fire and ice thing that DC and Layna have and Cat is a great feisty heroine. And I want to go on a riverboat cruise down the Mississippi! Are those real? I might have to do some research.

Daniel MacGregor is back meddling again.

This time to see three of his grandsons married off, of course, to three perfect-for-them women. And, of course, all three of them think they're handling it all while puppet master Daniel pulls all the right strings. Sweet little novellas, good narration.

finally finished this one! not that it was bad—it just seemed like I could read about 3 pages and then set it aside for some reason or another. Daniel MacGregor is at it again, and this one did not disappoint!

Once again, the head of the MacGregor clan is at it again, this time with his grandsons. As hilarious as the granddaughter one, this too is a good, funny, easy read. Makes you believe in true love after all. :)

RE-READ July 19th, 2008..New review below:

I am SOOOOOOOOOO behind for this month. I have had my mother here for 3 weeks and the book I am reading is just a LOT slower than the first two in the series. I read this Nora Roberts book just to get another book in. I needed some fluff in the middle of Thursday Next and Jurisfiction (don't ask...you have to read the book to understand and it would take me YEARS to try and figure it out well enough to explain!)

66. The MacGregor Grooms by Nora Roberts

Quick easy read about that wonderful family The MacGregor's and the crazy old patriarch Daniel who is back to his matchmaking ways. Lovely to read (again...just bought it as it was re-released recently). Just the fluff I needed. Three stories, three grandson's. Ian's story (the third one) is the best in my opinion. Love and hope and trust. Its lovely.

Reread as a 3.5.

Rating of individual stories:

DC - 4/5. Loved the tension in this one.

Duncan - 3.5/5. This story progressed at a very natural pace, and the setting of a cruise ship on the river was fun.

Ian - 3/5. Sorry to my friend Heidi, who loves this story! I liked Ian, I did. But the story itself was basically instalove and just ok to me.

The MacGregor Grooms is broken into 3 stories revolving around 3 men; DC, Duncan, and Ian all Daniel MacGregor's grandsons that he is determined to see with their perfect match.

Roberts does a good job pairing couples up that work somehow and that makes for an enjoyable read. Yes they are a bit predictable, these are some of her older books where that was expected from the romance book, but I enjoyed a very relaxing day reading this book.

Priče već previše liče jedna na drugu, ali nekako sam zavolela MekGregorove.
Ko voli romantiku, ovo je sjajno. Meni i nije posebno "legla". Neka budu 3 *.

I am not going to review every Nora Roberts book that I have read in the past because she is quite prolific and it would get redundant and I honestly cannot remember all the plots. I think someone finds someone else attractive but at least one cannot admit it so there is sexual tension, then lots of sex, and then they live happily ever after? Sometimes there is some magic , a family legacy, or a mystery. Certainly not great works of literature (however still 100% better than “the grapes of wrath”). I think I have read every one of her books to date because despite the cheesy nature, the ending is always happy and the read is easy. Frankly, I like these books and will continue to read each one that comes out. I am going to post this same review for each of her books that I have read in the past.

This is a collection of novellas of the MacGregor grandsons finding love: D.C. and Layna, Duncan and Cat, Ian and Naomi. While I enjoyed D.C. and Duncan's stories, Ian's story is my favorite in ALL of the MacGregors. A shy woman who owns a bookstore finding love with a sexy lawyer in a Harvard sweatshirt? Umm, yes please! BORING!!!!
Liked the male leads but the women were dull as dishwater. Not sure what the heck was wrong with the first two female leads but they were just plain stupid and unbelievable. They had absolutely no sense of humour and no true reason that I could discern for walking around with a stick up their ass.
The last story with Ian was the best of the three. But even so, it did not make up for the other two. Wish it had been the first story before I lost my patience.

Apparently today is abandon-the-crappy-book-you-are-reading-day but hopefully given the genre, people will not blame me for giving up on this book. This was my first (and last) Nora Roberts read. It was incredibly boring. No character development. Lame dialogue. Lame descriptions of sex scenes. Lame problems. Just really lame. Would not recommend this author.

I debated between 2.5 and 3 stars --- I liked two of the stories and the last one really had potential, but in my opinion there is just NO WAY that you can present two characters, have them meet and get to know one another, and watch them believably fall in love in only ~100 pages!! At least, that's my take.
