There are a lot of people who think provincial and regional mileus are a den of superstition and reactionary sentiments. They probably do not recognize that along with devotional and tradition-loving writers, there have always been remarkably progressive and even revolutionary writings.
Chaganti Somayajulu was a rationalist and materialist. In these collection of short stories, you will see a writer railing against superstition and landlordism. Someone whose ear was always keen to hear injustices and who heard the unheard.
None of these were done in a dogmatic way and one can read it just to experience the style and beauty. For someone like me who hails from Guntur and lived in Hyderabad a long time, some of the dialects were hard to understand and I had to read them slowly. Some of the subtext is also hard to understand since these are mid-century stories.
I remember reading "Bondu Mallelu" in Class X and I remembered the name "CHASO" ever since. I got a chance to re-discover him and by extension rediscover my state. For that I will be eternally grateful!
