Ham Action Thrillers #8

IMMUNE: A Ham Novel

Rate this book
“So you want me to fly to Colombia and commit what basically amounts to a political assassination on foreign soil?”

Not making the mistake of firing back too quickly, responding with something heated or that he might not be able to take back, he waits. A pause of several seconds, ending with him sighing deeply.

“We’re not asking you to incite an international incident. We just want justice.”

Six nights ago, disaster struck as the Cattaneo crime family gathered at its headquarters in the suburbs of Boston to enjoy the Feast of San Gennaro. An annual rite that was supposed to be a moment of reflection and celebration on the heels of an especially difficult summer, seeing massive upheaval in their ranks.

Turmoil that turned out to be just the beginning, as they were targeted by a hitman just moments after sitting down to eat. A sudden and vicious attack that claimed the lives of not just half a dozen of their own, but the life of a responding officer as well.

More tallies on a months-long spree, all attributable to the man hiding behind the protection of diplomatic immunity. The proverbial get-out-of-jail free card that many across the city could not abide, leading them to put in a call to Ham with the request that she do what they could not.

Fly to Colombia and end the man responsible for so much destruction and chaos.

What was supposed to be a relatively simple assignment turns into anything but as Ham arrives, discovering that the man’s role was just one tiny aspect of a much larger scheme. A plan years in the making, sending her scrambling across multiple countries and continents in a mad dash to unravel it.

Then prove to those responsible that true immunity has its limits.

I originally hail from the midwest, growing up in the heart of farm country, and still consider it, along with West Tennessee, my co-home. Between the two, I have a firm belief that football is the greatest of all past-times, sweet tea is really the only acceptable beverage for any occasion, there is not an event on earth that either gym shorts or boots can't be worn to, and that Dairy Queen is the best restaurant on the planet. Further, southern accents are a highly likeable feature on most everybody, English bulldogs sit atop the critter hierarchy, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with a Saturday night spent catfishing at the lake.

Since leaving the midwest I've been to college in New England, grad school in the Rockies, and lived in over a dozen different cities ranging from DC to Honolulu along the way. Each and every one of these experiences has shaped who I am at this point, a fact I hope is expressed in my writing. I have developed enormous affinity for locales and people of every size and shape, and even if I never figure out a way to properly convey them on paper, I am very much grateful for their presence in my life.

To sum it up, I asked a very good friend recently how they would describe me for something like this. Their response: "Plagued by realism and trained by experiences/education to be a pessimist, you somehow remain above all else an active dreamer." While I can't say those are the exact words I would choose, I can't say they're wrong. I travel, live in different places, try new foods, meet all kinds of different people, and above all else stay curious to a fault.

Here's hoping it continues to provide us all with some pretty good stories...

No matter how good you are, you will always have doubts along the way.

Ham thought this was another mission from Mickey, her boss. The client requested that she gives him a call so she does. She decides to take the mission thinking she understands why it needs to be done.

But with a Consulate, sheriff and the cartels involved, who knows the real truth behind the request and what you don't know can kill you!

Something isn't right, what is she missing? Doubts start to arise; why is this happening, why wasn't I able see that or even suspect that. Am I losing my edge and abilities?

This mission takes her to Massachusetts, Maine and Columbia.
In Columbia as she learns her target used a false name. Now to find the real name and information about him.

When she finally finds him someone else knows exactly where she is. She finds herself as the target.
How did this get so turned around!!
Before her target dies he says"we were set up"

Wow!! That makes since but who and how! They will be her next target!!

With the Columbian ambassador, a sheriff in his pocket and the cartels, they started a war between the Irish and the Italians as a distraction as they try to take over the ports to bring in an important product from Columbia. The Ambassador wants to rise up the political ladder and hopefully become the leader in Columbia.

Now she has to get out of one country and into another without being eliminated.

With a bit of help she makes it back into the U.S. only to see a video of her on the news claiming she is wanted for a murder.

What else will come against her in the process of serving out justice for all the people killed to get a hold of these ports.

Ham only knows one person she can trust right now where she is- the Italian leader of a cartel, whose husband and other family members n business people died at a party she and her husband hosted.

I'll not tell you how but they helped each n got to the bottom of this mess and justice was served!

Everyone’s favorite human terminator, HAM, is back-- and better than ever.

In a continuing evolution of both her character and the scope of the plot, HAM dives deeper into her growing investigative skills, unraveling a complex international plot dealing with a triumvirate of corrupt enterprises—Organized Crime, Police, and Politics.

Then, of course, eradicates the offenders.

Eradicates with extreme prejudice.

“Immune” also reveals more of HAM’s personal side. Not only a slight broadening of her backstory, but glimpses of her actual lifestyle. It’s an intimacy which has only been lightly touched on previously, creating a more well-rounded character, thereby forging a stronger personal connection with the reader.

Fear not though, this is not a softening or dilution of her character; the wild and woolly mayhem ensues gleefully and viscerally.

One small hint is the viscous-looking grappling hook pictogram that appears above each chapter number (a Dustin Stevens signature).

Hey, they don’t call her HAM for nothing…

“Immune” sends HAM on her most complex investigation yet, crossing international borders and piecing together a complex and seemingly insurmountable conspiracy chock full of treachery, deceit, and violence that rises to the highest level of multiple public and private organizations. HAM must utilize her brain and her brawn to solve this intricate mystery, ultimately resolving it in HAM’s inimitable fashion.

The additional personal insights make this a compelling and satisfying read.

Highest recommendation.

There are many ways to look at Ham. Respectfully is your best bet for a first look. I have come to view her through the prism of good and evil. Ham’s missions always involve removing some strain of evil from the world followed by a return to her safe haven where there is calm and balance. But it is always temporary like relief from an allergy attack.

I have come to view Ham as allergic to evil - which is always in the air. The breezes passing through her desert home will have bits of evil entwined with the pollen that begin to trigger Ham’s immune system reactions - restlessness and excess energy that needs an outlet. I think of it as the Ham Twitch. And with the emotional benadryl, Mickey calls. Evil needs to be dealt with.

A small mom and pop pizzeria is being extorted by minor mobsters and they need to be bashed, but not incinerated. This helps but does not stop the metaphorical sneezing. Mickey has a bigger pill in the form of a bigger family and more mobsters kerfuffle that is spinning out of control. Major evil - major relief.

Dustin Stevens is a master at keeping his characters fresh, his plots engrossing, and hyperspeed action that can catch readers off guard. Immune is seductively structured with short chapters and readers have a risk of ‘reading just one more’ and have an hour slip away. Immune wants to be a movie - but finding Ham is mission impossible. Immune is a great read.

Dustin Stevens extends the Ham series #8 with Immune. It’s an extraordinary book to read!

After an extremely dangerous attack on one of Boston’s famous crime families, the killer is caught after which he notifies Boston’s finest police the word’s that will get them standing still: “Diplomatic Immunity!
He immediately leaves the city for his home in Columbia.

Shortly thereafter, Ham has a new assignment: go to Columbia and investigate what happened in Boston. Her investigation leads her to all encompassing new assignment: find out the reason for her original assignment and all of the people involved with it.

So from then on, you are following Ham, having necessary talks with Mikey, her handler, and Frost, their computer whiz. She deals with numbers of people, new leads, and meets with dangerous people.
Throughout this mission she keeps her tomahawk handy, and uses it as necessary to allow her to continue her mission.

Ham’s mission will keep you reading so much you will find it difficult to stop. Yes, it’s that exciting!

After committing a horrific act of violence against one of Boston’s notorious crime families, the killer, when caught, utters two words “Diplomatic Immunity”. The BPD has no choice but to cut the guy lose. He is extradited to his home country where he ‘escapes’ custody. This is where Ham comes in. Her skills are requested to bring justice into the situation. But there is so much more going on. The initial murders are just the tip of the iceberg and now Ham finds herself deeply involved in in a plot involving greed and international intrigue. Oh, and if caught in a foreign country, international hell might just ensue.

Ok, first, you’ve gotta love a gal with a tomahawk. It’s certainly not the weapon of choice for many people but Ham is able to pull it off with guts and her signature confidence. Ham’s skill set is certainly put to the test in this super-powered thriller. With her team having her back, she is able to put the pieces together of this deeply disturbing plot. She manages to complete her initial mission only to find herself the target of an even worse situation. Packed with action, and pulsing with energy, this is the kind of book you will find yourself anting to read ‘just one more chapter’.

In the early volumes of the Ham series, the protagonist was known as a formidable operator who delivered justice without prejudice. She was a blunt instrument who got the job done, regardless of the physical toll.

In more recent installments, including Immune, she has evolved into a protector and investigator while maintaining her physical prowess. In this latest story, she must unweave an insidious plot as the underworld attempts to introduce new players into the Northeast to benefit a man with high aspirations.

Ham will need to employ every tool at her disposal to uncover the truth and dismantle the plan. Rest assured, there is still plenty of kick-ass action and high stakes with Ham on the case.

This is a highly recommended addition to the series - check it out!

I just finished an ARC copy of Dustin Stevens’ latest book in the Ham series, number 8. In this entry, Ham is called to action to help eliminate a problem by an assassin with diplomatic immunity. The story quickly broadens into an international and harrowing trip to Columbia and back to Boston as Ham pieces together a violent rivalry between Italian and Columbian gangsters and in pursuit of all who did her wrong. You do NOT mess with Ham and get to live. With the help of Mikey and his cyber whiz Frost, Ham crosses the ocean and back, evading every attempt to eliminate her. Will she survive to the end and head back home, or will she finally die at the hands of the most evil animals out to hunt her down? Have a good read and be prepared to bite some of your nails off.

Ham is back in a big way! Mikey passes along a unique request and Ham is all in - then she realizes things are not what they seem. An abundance of characters and locations make the reader pay attention to who’s who and who’s where. Ham must figure out who is honest and who is not, tapping into her life experiences and of course she has a little help from Mikey and Frost. I loved the Boston scenes as they were a nice change from previous Ham books. If you enjoy an interesting book with twists and turns, mysterious characters and a plot that reads like an intricate chess match, grab this one now!

One of the few great female characters in the Action, Thriller/ Suspense genre! Ham, recently feeling a bit antsy to get back to work, gets a call from Boston PD asking for a little of her special brand of retribution for the murders of local police detectives and she heads to Columbia.
What seems to be heading into a very short story, turns upside down quickly and turns into another great adventure with Ham uncovering a major play being made to take over Portland Maine's docks and a political power shift in Columbia.

Ham is a great series by Dustin Stevens, IMMUNE stands alone, but you'll love the action so much you'll go back and read them all!

This book was a bit different than the previous Ham novels. It had international intrigue and a deeper, more intricate plot. Don’t get me wrong, Ham with her tomahawk and her intense need for fairness and justice is the same beloved character as ever.

This book just seems to have a wider scope to the plot and a more subtle story for Ham to sharpen her investigative side. As always, Mikey and Frost are with her every step of the way. Their background support was especially needed in this international story.

I especially enjoyed how this one drew me in and made it even harder for me to put down at night! Great book with one of my most favorite characters!

Ham is just hanging and getting rather bored, then the phone rings and Mikey and Frost have something to do. Little did any of them know how complicated this was going to be g to become. Dustin does a great job building the story, blending the good guys, figuring out who the bad guys are and what Ham is going to do to resolve the issues.

This book is almost a story within a story as events happen which cause the plot to thicken and then there is the issue of did she get sold out. Never make her mad. Lots of travel, lots of action, and lots of bad guys. Plus there is a bit of a surprise twist at the end.

As an Advance Reader, I am voluntarily writing this review

Buckle up, Dustin Stevens is about to take you on one of the twistiest-turniest , whiplash inducing, thrill rides you've ever been on!
Ham is back, and this time, she's chasing an assassin who claims diplomatic immunity.
From Ham's home haunt in the desert, to Columbia and back to Boston, she's trying to unravel how an assassin with diplomatic immunity fits into a Cartel trying to take over Mob Territory in Boston.
With plenty of action, you'll forget to eat, sleep or take the dog out until you finish this fabulous new Ham adventure!
Can't wait to read the next one!

IMMUNE: A Ham Novel (HAM Action Thrillers Book 8), my third read from author Dustin Stevens. A 469-page read that reads longer than the page count, the eighth book in the Ham Action Thrillers series' I'm probably missing something coming into the series late. I've already looked at the first books in the series and anticipate reading them. “I received a complementary Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Ham is no ordinary assassin—and this job is anything but simple.

What should have been a routine assignment quickly spirals into chaos when Ham discovers her target is just a small piece of a much larger international conspiracy. As she closes in, the hunter becomes a key player in a lethal game where every move could be her last.

Fast-paced, dangerous, and relentlessly suspenseful, this thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final page.

When Ham gets bored... look out! Feeling antsy & ready for some action, she is suddenly thrown into the world of International Corruption. Add in multiple crime families & a few questionable policemen, you've got the makings of a book you will not want to put down.
As with other "Ham" books, she kicks butt & takes names. All are fast paced and bring you to the edge of your seat in a hurry.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly, guaranteed to see how fast you can turn the page.

So, Ham is asked once again to help out and being the person she is agrees to do so. What ensues is more than even she could have imagined, with twists and turns in many and varied directions. Wild ride to locations new to her and different from past places, is this the start of a new chapter in Ham's life, we will have to wait and see.
Very enjoyable and readable, putting it down is the only problem. Difficult to do.

It’s another fantastic Dustin Steven’s book. I got the chance to read this pre-release and it did not disappoint. I had never read any of the Ham series. That’s okay. It’s a great hold on to your seat page turner. From the first page you’re drawn into this suspense packed story. Now get out there and pick up a copy. Seriously, you can’t go wrong with a Dustin Stevens book. Enjoy and be prepared not to move till you finish.

Dustin Stevens is a master storyteller and “Immune” continues the trend. Ham Dustin’s lead character leads us on an international action-packed thriller that you will not want to put down. The story is very well written pushing you to turn to the next page to see how Ham deals with some very bad people.
If you a like a strong, talented, smart, and deadly woman lead, and who doesn’t then this book is for you. You will not regret purchasing this superb page turner.

Ham seems to never have much trouble in the situations in which she finds herself. A relatively “simple” trip to another country to do a job, turns into an unreal tangled web that she is almost beside herself with the twists, turns, and roadblocks that cause her a little bit of extra savvy to finish the job. As always, this adventure keeps you on your toes, as Dustin Stevens does masterful job leading us to the end.

I enjoy the Ham series. She is quirky, lethal and fast on her feet. What I liked: seeing the various sides of Ham; Ham’s relationship with Mikey and Frost; that evil can be atoned; that women are the strongest characters, more than survivors. What I didn’t like: it took a long time before Ham appeared; the repetitive use of “tight” and incorrectly used as an adverb; in many ways it felt like the novel got sloppier toward the end of the book. Overall, I enjoyed this novel.

So many names/characters in just the first 5 chapters, seems like won't be able to keep straight but all comes easily together when keep reading, and well worth the read! Is Ham a hired gun, mercenary, vigilante or psycho? Well, you will have to read to figure it out and sometimes may have incorrect assumptions. This book will give you some LOL moments along with shivers. Another goodie from the fantastic author.

I don’t know how Dustin thinks up or designs his storyline’s but I love every single one of them. Dustin in his 8th book in the Ham series sends Ham to Columbia to exact justice on an assassin and maintained my intrigue from start to finish, which is exactly what I need from an author of Dustin’s calibre. I recommend any of Dustin’s written works to prospective new readers; you will not be disappointed.

This just blew me out of the water!!! It's one twisted, very twisted, story that just wraps you up and keeps you on the edge of your chair. You're saying "what the heck is going on?" Only Ham can see the truth and understand what was going on. Cause I sure couldn't. But I loved every minute that I read it!!

When men shooting gunfire had entered the room.

Ham gets a call from Mikey, who tells her he has a job for her! Never questioning, she agrees to this job after speaking to someone who explains it's about the death of two Boston PD detectives. She finds herself in Columbia, then needs to go to Boston to find out if the killer was right. Did someone really set up the two of them? Great read!

Plenty of confusion at the start

HAM as always is the tough, gritty, smart problem solver. There were so many ways this could have gone bad. Finding the true conflict and which of the good guys was bad resulted in an interesting, satisfying plot, along with some potential come back characters.
