Shadows stretch long in small towns, and Claire can’t shake the feeling she’s being watched.

Leaving behind bruises, secrets, and shattered dreams, Claire Collins flees Nashville and lands in the dusty outskirts of Miner City, South Dakota. In the town’s quiet isolation, she tries to rebuild her life, only to learn that starting over isn’t as simple as leaving.

Whispers from the past begin to surface - quiet, familiar, and impossible to dismiss - seeping into her days and slowly eroding the life she’s trying to build.

She escaped him. Or so she believed.

This haunting blend of family saga and psychological thriller explores the scars we carry, the families we find, and the terrifying lengths some will go to reclaim what they believe belongs to them.

Claire's integrity & strength are so admirable & inspirational. She has no family left, just a small circle of friends. She doesn't cave, she doesn't give up, she's true to herself ... Even amidst the most horrid relationship, then rebuilding her life, & then re-facing the trauma/asshole! She is a wonderfully strong & beautiful main character!

I also really enjoyed her best friend Frank -- he's such a good friend & support, and always brings a little dose of humor amidst the drama!

An overall gripping story pointing out the strength, perseverance, & courage of domestic abuse survivors. I highly recommend this book!!

When I say I inhaled this book I am not exaggerating. From the first page I knew I was in for an intense ride. This book is gritty, emotional, tantalizing, horrifying, gasp aloud and close your eyes in terror type of read. Domestic abuse is sneaky. It appears to come from nowhere. The man you have fallen for is not this type of man. He is good, he is kind, he loves me. The woman ends up believing she caused it. By doing something wrong, by not meeting his expectations, by being someone he does not want anymore. Emersyn writes a read that makes my heart pound in my chest, I find myself yelling at Claire to take note of all the red flags she is passing by. Speaking of the characters, they are deeply layered and screaming to be explored. I despised Hunter with every cell in my being. What happened in his past to make him the monster he is today.

Claire Collins has always dreamed that she will be discovered in Nashville and become a country singer. When she becomes an orphan at the end of her senior year of high school. Life has weighed her shoulders down. Claire is on her own and she needs to slip from beneath the dark shadow that has become her life. She heads to Nashville for college and she finds an immediate friendship and lifelong bond with her new boss, Frank. Frank is everything in a person that she needs right now. Dependable, loving, there for her no matter what, and the snark these two give each other is priceless. At her local coffee shop, she meets Hunter. A man that turns every woman's head and he is looking at her. From that moment forward they are inseparable. Claire feels like their relationship is on a racetrack and the car cannot be slowed down. They move in together and that is when Hunter shows his true colors...

This book took me in its grasp and does not let go. The writing is superb. Walking me into a horrible situation to view it from the inside. I will never look at flowers quite the same way again. I will be searching for a deeper more hair-raising meaning from now on. I loved Claire and Frank, they are cut from the same cloth, and their friendship gives me hope in humanity. My jaw dropped to the floor and my eyes flooded at the end. I did not see that coming. Thank you, Emersyn, for this phenomenal book and for having me be a part of your ARC team.
