James Barton is a Christian author dedicated to helping sincere seekers develop a clear, confident, and biblical understanding of their faith. As a non-denominational Christian with experience across a wide range of church traditions and more than four decades of Bible study, he now works to share that knowledge with a broader audience.

Through his writing, James speaks especially to those who believe in God yet feel uncertain about how to build a meaningful relationship with Him, understand Scripture, or find their place within the Christian life. His work seeks to cut through confusion by presenting the Bible’s message in plain language, grounded in careful study and deep respect for Scripture.

His book Christian Compass: What the Bible Teaches About Christianity was written to provide readers with direction, clarity, and assurance. It offers practical guidance on how to read the Bible effectively, understand God’s purpose, find a spiritually nurturing church, and grow in faith in Jesus Christ.

James writes with the conviction that the Bible provides everything necessary for faith, life, and spiritual maturity. His broader work includes Bible study tools, reading plans, and companion resources designed to support believers at every stage of their spiritual journey.

He lives in Ontario, Canada, and hosts local community Bible discussion groups.

The book’s title and overview are quite accurate. If trustworthy direction is what you seek you will indeed find it in this book. Christian Compass lays out in plain, concise language exactly what I needed to know 30 years ago as a new, overwhelmed Christian. Sadly, just as Jesus warned, there are many false prophets and teachers. Without family to guide me in my new commitment to Christ and not yet familiar with all of Scripture, I was susceptible to error. Now, after many decades of studying the Bible for myself and attending various denominations, I have arrived at many of the same conclusions as this author.

An excellent chapter that stood out to me was The Purpose of Adversity. There’s so much hard truth on those pages that I underlined most of what I read!

I appreciate the author’s attempt to write without promoting any one particular denomination but instead to emphasize matters of salvation, relationship, the Kingdom come, and the disciplines that lead to maturity. He addresses many of the questions I’ve asked over the years including those on the topic of Bible translations (literal versus paraphrased) and even briefly touched on the Apocrypha.
Barton’s assertions are supported mostly with Bible verses but also lightly reinforced with analogies. You will find Christian Compass very comprehensive but well organized with cross-references, footnotes, an index of Bible texts and a glossary.

Overall, I was impressed with the book and bought a copy for a friend who asked my advice on which church to attend.
I believe the highlighted sections of my copy of the book will prove useful in the future when again approached by those interested in the Christian faith.
I’m thinking the book would also be a great gift for someone newly baptized.

This book felt like the slow, steady lifting of a fog I didn’t even realize had settled over my heart. As someone who has wrestled with questions about faith and carried a healthy skepticism toward religion, I didn’t feel preached at or pressured. Instead, I felt invited. Each chapter met me where I was and gently guided me forward, untangling misconceptions and replacing them with truth rooted in grace.

The author writes with warmth and sincerity. The words are thoughtful for new Christians without being complicated, encouraging without being cliché, and heartfelt without ever feeling forced. This isn’t just a book you read; it’s a companion for the journey. For anyone seeking clarity, wrestling with doubt, or longing to understand God’s love in a deeper and more personal way, this book is a gift. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
