I've got about 20 years on Lucas Jones, and for some of this collection, that gap was clear. But as a college professor who spends a lot of time helping people in their 20s navigate life, the themes hit closer than you might expect — grief, love and connection don't really care how much life you've lived. These themes are universal.
Grief is the thread that runs through much of this collection, and a few poems made me cry. A few made me glad I'm not in my 20s, or dating. More than a few made me glad Jones is thinking and talking about what it means to be a good man. That's not nothing, especially right now.
Not every poem landed for me, but the ones that didn't were still interesting and thoughtful.
Romance is my usual territory, but I picked up this ARC during National Poetry Month and it was worth the detour. This collection was previously published in the UK and arrives for US readers in July 2026. Before you read it, do yourself a favor and follow Jones on social media. Hearing him perform these poems is its own experience, and it'll change how you read them on the page.
