About the author
Neil S. Plakcy
518 books682 followersI’m Neil S. Plakcy, and I write mysteries and romances filled with humor, heart, loyalty, found family, complicated heroes, and, very often, dogs.
Readers may know me from the Golden Retriever Mysteries, featuring Steve Levitan and his clue-sniffing golden retriever Rochester; the Mahu Investigations, featuring Honolulu homicide detective Kimo Kanapa‘aka; the Have Body, Will Guard adventure-romance series with Aidan and Liam; the Angus Green FBI thrillers; and the Smiling Dog Café healing fiction.
I began writing seriously in high school after an inspiring assignment on A Separate Peace by John Knowles. I didn’t yet have the words for being gay, but I knew I was longing for deep emotional connection, friendship, and love. That longing still runs through my work, whether I’m writing mystery, romance, adventure, or suspense.
An MFA in creative writing helped me hone my technical skills and understand what kind of storyteller I am. Since then, I’ve written dozens of books, won a couple of treasured awards, and been lucky enough to find readers who care about my characters as much as I do.
I’ve also always believed that dogs make excellent detectives. They notice what humans miss: a faint scent, a subtle shift in body language, the hidden treat in your pocket. That belief helped inspire my Golden Retriever Mysteries, where Rochester helps Steve Levitan nose out the truth.
Every place I’ve lived has made its way into my fiction: the rolling hills of Bucks County, the neon heat of Miami, the beaches of Hawaii, and the cobbled streets of Europe. I love exploring how communities work, from a café where dogs help people heal to a police unit in Honolulu to a romance unfolding under the Mediterranean sun.
I write because stories helped me feel less alone growing up. Now I hope to give readers that same feeling: a companion, a puzzle, a sense of place, and maybe a laugh.
When I’m not writing, I’m probably walking one of my golden retrievers, teaching writing, reading, or daydreaming about my next story.

I wasn't exactly impressed with the first "Storming Love" MLRPress collection and I wasn't planning to read this second one -- but this story is about Kimo and Mike, from Neil Plakcy's Mahu series, and I have followed that series from the very beginning. So, despite for it being quite pricey (I mean $2.99 for 11.000 words, really?!?), I decided to bought it.
Unfortunately, I thought this story was not that impressive -- and I spent most of the time FUMING. Yes, Mike and Kimo had their vacation with their sexy times (it's GREAT to see that they're still strong after five years) ... but the story also marred with another married couple that just seemed to just fighting everytime they were on scenes. It annoyed the heck out of me because I simply couldn't see the POINT. Oh, and what's up with that other couple that wanting to have some sort of foursome with Kimo and Mike??
To be perfectly honest, I thought it would be a great set-up for a murder mystery, if the husband or the wife ended up dead in the cabin, and then the spouse became a suspect, and then Mike and Kimo had to investigate. Because without that, it was just a short vacation story, thrown some sex scenes, with an aggravating secondary couples that just went nowhere.
With that price, I'm not exactly amused.

Well that was a short bland story…. Here’s the plot: Mike and Kimo go on vacation to Colorado to meet some friends and ski. One of the couples they are going with is fighting and ruins the trip for everyone. The end. I didn’t like any of the characters, including Mike and Kimo, there isn’t enough about them to get to know them or care about them. The couple that was fighting was horrible, and I had no interest in them at all. The third couple didn’t do much other than try and get Mike and Kimo to have sex with them. Mike and Kimo did have sex a couple of times, but it wasn’t particularly interesting or sexy. Oh, there is a blizzard mentioned, but it doesn’t add anything to the plot. The characters just acknowledge that it is snowing, but it doesn’t seem to cause any drama. I would think that a book in a series based around a storm would have an actual storm in it.
Maybe it would have helped if I had read some of the other books with Mike and Kimo in them, maybe that would have given me a reason to care about them, but I sure didn’t in this book. I don’t really have an opinion on the writing, it was so short there wasn’t enough there to give me an idea of the authors style. So I didn’t like the plot, or the characters, the sex was not really interesting, and the writing was ok. Overall it was a very disappointing book. I hate to say that, but it was true….

Mike and Kimo is a story about two men in love, in a committed, monogamous relationship. It’s a story about compromise. Kimo loves the sun and surfing, Mike likes cool weather and skiing. Mike has a chance to get together with two of his college friends and their spouses for a ski vacation, so Kimo agrees. Will the raging storm outside also find its way into their relationship?
This story is very well written. I’ll admit when I first started reading and it began with sex I was thinking I wouldn’t like it, but I saw right away it was to show their relationship, not in just a physical light. There is a good storyline about relationships and marital abuse in this story. I loved both Mike and Kimo and would love to see them in some full-length books. There is always room for a sexy homicide detective and fire investigator …just sayin'.
If you like stories about relationships, hunky fire investigators, sexy homicide detectives, vacations, skiing, and some hot man-sex this is definitely for you.

From that review: "I am such a Kimo fan that nothing can detract from any story he is a part of. But for readers new to Kimo and Mike, this short story conveys none of the enormous hurdles and obstacles (many of their own making) they had to overcome to become the couple they are when this story opens. It happened over a number of books, not scenes and their relationship was borne out of enormous pain and anguish each caused the other. Each man is gorgeous in his own multiracial way and people are always hitting on them but never with the history (ok almost never) of one of the couples here. Plus the stress is pushed to overload when the couples disagreements turn physical and Mike and Kimo must balance their professions with their partner's needs."

But one of the couple was arguing always not sure why bring them with them if they had problems. All the guys wanted a nice vacation but i dont think that really spoiled anything for them though much.. I guess will read the series find out more about these guys in the future reads hopefully when i come around to it.
