Susan never imagined herself an amateur sleuth, and she certainly never goes looking for trouble, preferring days spent walking her loyal dogs Libs and Rocco, and maybe even a dip in the sea to cool off after this interminable heatwave.

When she hears of a break-in at the vet’s where her new neighbour works, Susan’s curiosity is piqued.

And then, few days later, the lead vet, Peter, mysteriously disappears. They assume it's business related until his body is washed up on the beach close to his cliff-top home.

Susan is convinced he was murdered and slowly discovers that each of the small group of suspects have a motive. Is the killing linked to the break in… or is this a crime of passion?

Once again, Susan finds herself piecing together clues in her search for the truth. Can she untangle the lies before someone else dies?

I enjoyed the time but it’s part of the isle of wright killings and I enjoyed the book. It was cosy crime mystery!

Susan lives in a lovely setting where everything appears serene and calm on the surface. Only, it isn't. There are lots of twists and turns and I lost track of how many times I changed my mind about who was the most likely culprit. The prologue sets the mood as we're briefly in a killer's mind, leaving us uneasy as we wait to find out the details. As such, the fact life goes on as usual for awhile, dog walks and ocean swims included, prepares us but not for how many seem to have had a reason for wanting the victim dead. It reminds us that a killer can walk amongst us anytime, their life rarely allowing a glimpse into whatever drove them to kill.

We meet Susan early on (this was my first read of the series) and while tired of the overbearing heat of a seemingly never ending heat wave, she's going about her life. We even get to meet not just her friends but the eventual victim, a local vet whose clinic was just broken into. There are quite a few characters, too, so it took me a bit to sort them all out, occasionally getting confused about who was with who or married to who or whose dog was which. I did quickly suss out that Susan seems involved in a slowly budding romance with Robert, a retired cop, but he was in France with his daughter for much of the book, There always seemed to something hovering just beneath the surface, albeit you're not sure what it is about. Everyone seemed to have secrets. Heck, even Susan seems to have a secret of sorts that involves Steve, her ex-husband who shows up in town expecting to stay at her place briefly....for work, of course.

Bottom line, lots of secrets on the Isle of Wright. Who'd have wanted to kill the local vet and why? He was a keeper of secrets, too, of course, from the past and present. Let's say his wife didn't seem enthused about his news of a big break. But, more than enough said. Once you sort out the characters, which may be more the fact this was my first read of the series than not, it's an intriguing mystery with a growing sense of unease always just below the surface. Lots of twists and turns and, as noted, misdirection that have you pointing to one suspect after another as whodunit, some more than once. Thanks #BoldwoodBooks for introducing me to this intriguing book and author. While it was maybe a bit out of my usual cozy mystery niche, I found it an interesting read and will definitely be back. It was a plus to me that the story was centered around a small town vet practice, too, animal person that I am. Loved the teaser at the end regarding Susan's future.

A Summertime Murder by Mary Grand is an engaging and cleverly plotted mystery that perfectly blends small-town charm with dark secrets simmering beneath the surface.

From the start, the summer setting creates an interesting contrast to the crime at the heart of the story. There’s a lightness to the atmosphere—sunshine, community events, familiar faces—but Grand skillfully layers in tension that steadily builds as the investigation unfolds. I really enjoyed that balance between cozy and suspenseful; it made the story feel immersive without becoming overly heavy.

The characters were a highlight for me. The amateur sleuth was relatable and determined, with just enough vulnerability to make her feel real. I appreciated how the investigation didn’t feel rushed or unrealistic. Clues were revealed gradually, suspects were given believable motives, and the mystery kept me guessing longer than I expected.

The pacing was steady, though it leaned toward a slower build in the first half as relationships and backstories were established. Once the pieces started falling into place, however, the momentum picked up and I found myself eager to see how everything connected. The final reveal was satisfying and well thought out, tying together the various threads in a way that felt earned.

Mary Grand’s writing style is smooth and accessible, making it easy to settle into the story. She does a great job portraying the dynamics of a close-knit community—where everyone knows each other, and secrets are that much harder to keep.

Overall, A Summertime Murder is a solid, enjoyable mystery with a strong sense of place and a well-constructed plot. It’s a great pick for readers who enjoy character-driven whodunits with a summery backdrop and plenty of twists along the way.

Susan Flynn is enjoying her retirement with her cocker spaniel dogs Libs and Rocco. Sadly, a local man goes missing and Susan has a reputation for being an amateur sleuth. Can Susan and her dogs poke their noses into his disappearance and uncover what happened?

WOW! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this OUTSTANDING 5 star cosy mystery. A Summertime Murder is the fifth book in The Isle of Wight series but I feel that this book can be read as a stand-alone. It has been over 5 years since I have read a book from Mary Grand. Yet within a couple of pages it seemed as though I had been reading The House Party last week. Mary has a lovely, cosy Grandmother style of writing. She knows how to tell a story and keep the reader interested with every page. This is NOT a gritty crime thriller but a warm cosy story full of life about people getting on with their lives. I loved the part dogs played in everyone’s lives as Libs and Rocco were joined by Gem Gem, Dougie, Lottie and Luca.

I liked how the care of animals and the running of a veterinary practice was woven into the story…

‘My friend Alice calls that instinct a voice that whispers.’ Eliza smiled. ‘That’s a good description. It’s why I always listen to what clients tell me about their pets. They often pick up instinctively what we can miss.’

…A Summertime Murder is simply a pleasure to read and I felt as though I was walking along with Mary/Susan and her dogs as she told me about local gossip, history and local attractions. What I like most about her books is how I feel so “in tune” with her words as they sing out from each and every page. There is a touch of romance thrown into the story which has a happy ending and no animal was harmed.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher Boldwood Books for passing me an ARC on the understanding that I post a review.

Island heat wave and a shocking murder!

Mary Grand returns to the Isle of Wight for the stellar fifth entry in her cozy mystery series. Accidental sleuth, Susan Flynn and her dogs, Libs and Rocco, are enduring the sweltering temperatures of a summer heat wave. Susan and her young neighbour, Becca, regularly walk their dogs on the beach in the early morning to beat the heat. Susan finds a new mystery when Becca’s workplace, a local veterinary office, is broken into. Things take a tragic turn when one of the vets goes missing, and then his body turns up in the ocean below his cliff house.

Becca had invited Susan along to Peter’s birthday party, so Susan was present when the vet went missing. Most of the employees, as well as Peter’s wife, were present at the party. Although DS Kent, the investigative officer, doesn’t want Susan sleuthing on her own, she enlists her help. Susan’s superior observational and deductive abilities are well established at this point. She uses her quiet but friendly personality to quiz all the participants. Was it someone well known to them all, or some sinister criminal element that led to his death?

I love the characters in this book and the descriptions of the dogs and local village life. Susan is in emotional turmoil, this time caused by both her current boyfriend and her ex-husband. This is a twisty, locked gate mystery with an island flavour. Fans of T A Williams’ Armstrong and Oscar series or Donna Ball’s Raine Stockton mysteries will enjoy A Summertime Murder.

A Summertime Murder is exactly the kind of cosy mystery I love to curl up with — charming setting, gentle humour, and just enough suspense to keep the pages turning. Returning to the Isle of Wight with Susan and her two loyal dogs, Libs and Rocco, felt like slipping back into a familiar holiday spot.

Susan isn’t your typical sleuth, and that’s what makes her so endearing. She’d honestly rather be paddling in the sea than poking around a crime scene, but when her neighbour’s workplace is broken into — and then the lead vet, Peter, turns up dead — her curiosity (and kindness) naturally pulls her into the investigation.

The mystery itself is satisfyingly layered without ever feeling heavy. A small, close-knit group of suspects, each with their own believable motives, gives the story that classic cosy feel. I really enjoyed the mix of seaside charm and slightly darker undercurrents running through the heatwave setting — it adds just the right amount of tension without losing the warmth of the series.

Watching Susan quietly piece together clues, follow her instincts, and untangle all the little lies made this such an enjoyable read. The Isle of Wight atmosphere is lovely, the pacing is light and summery, and the twisty trail kept me guessing right up to the end.

A perfect escape for anyone who loves gentle mysteries with heart, community, and a determined amateur sleuth you can’t help rooting for.

A Summertime Murder by Mary Grand is a cosy mystery that takes place on the Isle of Wright. I have to admit the cover of the book was a big draw for me. The main character is a bit of a sleuth. She has solved a couple of murders prior to this novel. This is the fifth book in a series and I would suggest that reading the prior books would be helpful. Although I did not and was okay.
Susan, a huge dog lover, helps out getting a cat to the vet for her friend Alice. This opening scene introduces us to the clinic. First there was a mystery of someone breaking into the vets and stealing a bunch of drugs. Then there is a birthday party for one of the vets, Peter and then he disappears.

The rest of the novel focuses on Susan asking lots of questions and talking to lots of people. She seems to have the ability to get people to share information. Her older friend Alice is a strong help figuring out what all the clues lead to. Susan is also dealing with her ex-husband, who seems to be making a play for her again.

There are a large number of people who populate the book, even though the town is very small. I found the number of people overwhelming at the beginning of the book, but by the end it was somewhat easier. I did wish I read the prior books, especially when I realized the first book was on kindle unlimited. I liked the setting and writing, but was not as enthralled with the players.

A Summertime Murder by Mary Grand was an okay read.

The Isle of Wight Murders #5

Susan never imagined herself an amateur sleuth, and certainly never goes looking for trouble, preferring days spent walking her loyal dogs, Libs and Rocco, and maybe a dip in the sea to cool off after this interminable heatwave. When she hears of a break-in at the vets where her new neighbours work, Susan's curiosity is piqued. And then, a few days later, the lead vet, Peter, mysteriously disappears. They assume it's business related until his body is washed up on the beach close to his cliff-top home. Susan is convinced he was murdered and slowly discovers that each of the small group of suspects all have a motive. Is the killing linked to the break in.... or is this a crime of passion?

Set on the Isle of Wight, the prologue sets the mood for this story. There were a few suspects to choose from, and I kept changing my mind to who the culprit was. Susan is just an amateur sleuth, but when the vet gets broken into, and then the body of the lead vet, Peter, is washed up by the sea, her interest is piqued. This is my first read of this series and I rather enjoyed it. There is also a subplot that involves Susan's love life.

ARC Review

A Summertime Murder by Mary Grand is the fifth book in The Isle of Wight Killings series.

Susan, our familiar amateur sleuth, once again finds herself drawn into a murder mystery when the body of Peter, the lead veterinarian, washes up by the sea. The investigating officer asks Susan for her help, and true to form, she never backs down from a mystery. She gladly accepts and also seeks her friend's opinions as the case unfolds. With numerous suspects and plenty of believable motives, the mystery quickly becomes tangled. Can Susan uncover the truth before it’s too late?

This is a cozy small-town mystery with a steady, slow-building pace. There’s no rush, allowing the investigation to unfold thoughtfully and in detail. The story is filled with secrets and multiple suspects, all revealed gradually, which keeps the intrigue alive. Alongside the main mystery, there’s also a subplot involving some trouble in Susan’s love life, adding a personal touch to the story.

My favorite part was the final reveal of the murderer and their motive, which was both satisfying and well-executed. This book is perfect for readers who enjoy calm, slow-burn mysteries with plenty of atmosphere.

I was eagerly awaiting another book by Mary Grand. I really enjoyed The stand-alone novels The House Party and The Island. Death at St. Jude’s, the second book in the Isle of Wight killings was great, and I was hoping to get to review another book from the series.

In A Summertime Murder, I felt I got to know Susan quickly, and was caught up in her daily routine. Her neighbor Becca is friendly, and they bond while walking their dogs at the beach. It was nice to witness how well they got along despite the age difference.

The scene was also set quickly, and the night-time breaking at the vet’s was believable way to do that.

Who killed Peter? Why?

This book is a good standalone, just like Death at St. Jude’s is. I’d like to complete the series.

As with the novels by Mary Grand I have reviewed so far, the characters are well created and the setting of the Isle of Wight is immersive.

5 stars.

Mary Grand writes gripping cozy mysteries and mysteries in general, and I enjoyed this book.

“A Summertime Murder” by Mary Grand the 5th instalment in the "The Isle of Wight Killings" series. I enjoyed this book it’s a slow burn, entertaining mystery. . Once again, Susan finds herself piecing together clues in her search for the truth. Can she untangle the lies before someone else dies?

The mystery is expertly crafted, with just the right number of suspects to keep you guessing. The twists and turns are plentiful, and I didn't see the culprit coming.

Susan is a relatable protagonist who's had to start over after her husband left her. She's built a new life, made friends, and discovered a talent for solving mysteries. Her character growth in this story is compelling, and I appreciate that she's not static – she's complex and multi-dimensional.

I am sad that there won’t be anymore in the series, but look forward to Mary’s next book.

I absolutely love this series following Susan and her amateur sleuthing on the Isle of Wight. As a fellow Islander, visualising all the places mentioned makes it more interesting and due to the believable nature of the characters, I half expect to meet Susan and her dogs somewhere in the south or West Wight. This latest story follows first a break-in at the local vets, swiftly followed by the murder of the vet himself. As with all of Mary Grand’s mysteries there are so many possible culprits and explanations, it is virtually impossible to discover the truth before the end. A great story with many secrets being gradually revealed that finally uncover the perpetrator. Susan’s friend Robert and ex husband Steve also feature and I was quite exasperated by Susan’s tolerance at certain arrogant behaviour. I look forward to reading more from this talented author who brings the Island to life with beautiful images of the wonderful scenery and lifestyle. Thankfully the number of murders she writes about are purely fiction.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. I've been reading these books since the Christmas entry in the series and I always fly through them. I think Susan is a relatable character and I really enjoy having a main character who is an older woman.

As always, Susan is trying to just enjoy herself when she gets dragged into another murder investigation. This time the local vet has been killed. Susan doesn't really know him but her neighbor Becca works with him and Susan is determined to get to the bottom of this case.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, but I really thought it was strange that Susan is basically a stranger in this 'friend group' but she kept being invited to do things with them. Also, I wasn't really a fan of the whole 'Steve' thing going on. All that really did was add unnecessary drama to an already drama filled story. And the ending with Robert? That felt a bit rushed to me, but I was glad for it.

I really love this series and I can't wait for the next one already!

It was good to be back on the Isle of Wight with Susan - the amateur sleuth – and her family and friends. This is one of a series but can easily be read as a standalone.

Following her divorce from Steve a few years ago and an upsetting murder near her old home, Susan moved to the village of Bishopstone. Her daughter, Zoe, lives on the mainland with her wife and little girl.

Susan’s new next-door neighbour, Becca, works at the local vet surgery which is franchised by husband-and-wife team Peter and Eliza. The surgery is broken into one night and although Susan tries not to get involved, her nose for crime is on high alert. Soon after, Peter goes missing and everyone who knows him is concerned, but then his body is found. Every member of the friendship group that Susan belongs to is a potential suspect and she just can’t help getting involved in solving the crime.

Small town, huge murder!

Susan lives a normal quiet life with her dogs, her neighbors and her love for swimming. Her neighbor Harri's daughter Becca works at the local vets' office. When a break-in occurs at the vets office and a lot of medication is stolen, everyone believes it to be an isolated incident. Susan later becomes involved in the case when the body of the missing vet Peter appears washed up on the beach. It soon becomes apparent to Susan that their small town hold many secrets and that her neighbors harbor lies.

The small town vibes and the murder mystery sets us up for a cozy read. I enjoyed the town, our main character and all the other characters that make up this town. The Isle of Wight sets the atmosphere full of intrigue, questionable characters and lies. You won't guess who the killer is.

Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.

There is just something so comforting about this series. Yes, it revolves around murder… but somehow it remains one of the most wholesome, cozy reading experiences I’ve found. This installment was another delightful whodunit, clever enough to keep me guessing, but never dark or heavy. The mystery unfolds at a steady, satisfying pace, with just the right number of twists to make you second-guess everyone without feeling overwhelmed. What I love most, though, is the heart of these books. Susan feels like an old friend at this point. She's kind, layered, and easy to root for. I’m far more invested in her life than I ever expected to be in a series about murder. If you’re looking for a mystery without swearing, gore, graphic content, or anything gratuitous, just a genuinely fun, clean, cozy whodunit, this series is such a gem. Already looking forward to the next one.

Great book in the series but also great as a stand-alone too.
This series is witty, fast paced, fun and has great strong females and friendships too.
Susan is now an old hand at helping solve cases. This time she has been welcomed to help by the police as long as she stays out of the way!
Her and her dogs sniff out facts that the police don’t see and she slips into events quite unnoticed. This time her and Roberts friendship has petered out due to her ex Stephen coming to stay which has strained the burgeoning relationship and makes Susan unhappier than she realised. This caper set on the Isle of Wight is set around a vet practice and the staff and owners.
It’s a great book, very enjoyable and an easy read.

I am so enjoying this series. This books as the others, takes place onthe Isle of Wight with Susan and her two dogs, Rocco and Libs. This series often has me screaming at Susan because she can, at times, be really daft. Yet we all know someone like this, and by the end of the book, Susan has usually got it all righted. It just adds to the charm of the series. In this book, we have Steven, Susan's ex, coming back into the picture. At first, this made me upset because I thought Susan had gotten him out of her system, so to speak. But as I said earlier, Susan sometimes is a little daft. I enjoyed trying to decide who the killer was, and Mary Grand did a good job of keeping me guessing. Can't wait for the next in this fun series.

I have become quite invested in Susan's life, and this latest book made me read until the end.
First off, ex husband Steve is horrible, what a jerk, and I'm so glad Susan put him in her place.
I wasn't happy with Robert either, I mean, talk about making Susan feel worse than she already did. I hope he treats her like a queen, or else.......lol.

The mystery itself was so well done. When a local, well loved veterinarian's body is found washed up from the sea, secrets come out and truths are hard to swallow for this crew of characters.

I really like Becca and her dad, Harri, I hope that they will be included in future books.

This is a fantastic series, and I am excited to see what Susan gets up to next.

A summer heat wave has hit the Isle of Wight, but Susan and many of her friends cool off with a dip in the ocean. All seems quiet until the local vet’s office is burglarized and then the vet himself is later killed. The local DI doesn’t agree with the official direction of the investigation and actually asks Susan to help gather information. There are plenty of suspects and secrets in this small island group and you come to know them all during the story.
Susan’s ex also shows up to complicate her life and her feelings, but it doesn’t stop Susan from tracking down the real killer of the vet. I really enjoyed this entry in the Isle of Wight killings and was caught up in the mystery and the characters immediately.

Escape the winter and the interminable rain by immersing yourself in a cozy mystery set in sunny Isle of Wight.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood for the ARC. My review is voluntary. this novel is part of a series but can be rad as a standalone
The body of the local vet body is washed up on the beach underneath his cliff-top home.
Several of his friends, family and colleagues have a motive. Susan sets out to discover if the murder is connected to a recent break in at the vets surgery or a crime of passion.
A well crafted and well written mystery. None of the characters where particularly endearing. Susan's husband was obnoxious but this felt superfluous as he was not a suspect.

This is my first book from Mary Grand, and even though it is the 5th in the series it can be read as a standalone.
We have Susan, that fancy herself an amateur sleuth and now she gives her best to solve the mystery behind Pete's death. He was their lead vet.
She has a lot of suspicious persons and discovers their secrets and also a possible motive for murder.

I liked the author style and how the story goes on. It was an easy read and for sure I will read other books from her.

Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read the book in advance. This is my honest and only opinion.

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book. 3.5 stars. We’re back with amateur detective Susan on the Isle of Wight to solve another murder. This time the victim is local vet Peter. Susan’s neighbour Becca works at the vets practice and Susan, along with Peter’s colleagues had been at his housing celebrating his fortieth birthday the night he is killed. Could one of his colleagues be responsible? Could it be a gang connected to his gambling problem? Is the recent break-in at the vets connected? Susan’s personal life is turbulent in this book with the return of her ex-husband looking for temporary accommodation. Overall a good book.

As always, this cosy mystery series captures the essence of island living. The complex characterisation of an older amateur sleuth makes Susan someone readers invest in. I appreciated the way connections and events draw Susan into the latest suspicious death on the island. Many credible suspects have motive, means and opportunity. Susan, aided by the insightful and wise Alice, investigates them in a believably comprehensive way with a positive input from a surprising source. Susan's personal life adds authenticity, and you invest in it. The investigation and Susan's personal life reach successful conclusions.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My first Mary Grand book and it won't be my last!

I enjoyed reading about Susan and seeing her work her way through the information and facts she found out during her investigation. Lots of intrigue and mystery which kept me guessing right to the end.

A fab cosy crime book, and I'm looking forward to going back and reading the 4 books which came before this one.

This was a really good read, a cozy mystery that’s a page turner. Susan lives in a lovely coastal house on the Isle of Wight with her two dogs, when Peter the local vet ends up dead on the beach. Susan thinks he was murdered so becomes an amateur sleuth. She’s a great character and her sleuth skills are brilliant. The book flows easily and was a quick read. This is the fifth book in this series, but the first one I’ve read. Easy to get into the characters and location. A 5 star read. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for a copy.

Another cosy mystery set on the Isle of Wight. Susan gets invited to a party at the new Vets house by her neighbour Becky, who works at the vet practice. Following the celebration the group, minus Peter, the vet, head to the beach for a night swim.
The next day Peter has disappeared, his body later washing up on the beach. Susan, being puzzled by a few details she has noticed, starts to investigate, and is completely surprised to find her thoughts are welcomed by the police

An interesting and entertaining cozy mystery set on the Isle of Wight. I did not realise that this was Book 5 of a series. The mystery was contained within this storyline. There’s relationships and previous experiences of the main character that are mentioned, that help the first time reader. There’s a lot of threads, and so many secrets, no one is 100% true. It’s not clear until near the end who is the killer. However it’s not true that a child who is blood type O+ must have both parents with the same blood type!

I just love these cosy murder mysteries, and even more so that it’s set on the Isle of Wight

This one kept me guessing again right until the end 😮 and I loved the twists.

I also really enjoy the underlying story of Susan and Richard (and Steve but he can sod off! 😂). And Alice with her sharp observation skills.

I look forward to the next book

This was such an enjoyable cozy mystery! The cast of characters was so well-developed and I was really interested in the intricacies of their lives.

Susan was a very likable main character and I would definitely pick up the other books in this series!
