In 'To Murder Matt,' Matt was the most hated man on the planet. People around him wanted to murder him. He was abusive, mean and a downright nasty character that you prayed you would never meet.
Here we read his story. We join him on his journey through life from his very first breath and we find out why he becomes a devil amongst men.
Whatever you think you know about Matt, throw it out of the window, it’s wrong. You need to read his story.
A twisting dark novel of grand passions, heart breaking love, betrayal, death, deceit and lies.
Important. Suitable for 18+ Adults only. Contains sexually explicit scenes.
Born to British Army parents, Viveca grew up in Europe and speaks six European languages fluently, which basically means she can buy food (and wine), wherever she goes. Married, with two biological children, plus four adopted children. Now, years later, the kids all grown up, she is an international best-selling author, writing a variety of genres, her favorite being exceptionally dark and twisted suspense romance/ murder mystery / Saga's. She loves to get under people's skin and into their minds. Her books are for broad minded intelligent readers and not for the faint hearted at all, specializing in plotlines with shock elements that make some readers become violent with their Kindles. You will either love or hate her fictional characters, there is no in between with her writing. Her stories are unforgettable. Her hobbies, when not writing, include playing the cello (or trying to), and various other things that involve sitting down. All the athletic hobbies (horse riding, ski-ing, fencing, sailing etc) have now been put on the back burner so she can exercise her mind instead!

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars!
At first I really felt bad for the main character, Matt, but as time went on he became worse and worse. This reminded me a lot of the works by V.C. Andrews. There are a lot of characters you will dislike, yet the horribleness of it all will make you keep reading. You want to know what else is going to happen to these characters.
I wanted to like Matt, but I guess after time you start feeling sorry for him and just realize he is a pure monster. You feel sorry for every woman he meets because you know he will end up using her in some way.
This novel may be harder to read for some readers, it has sexual abuse, violence, rape, etc. However, these things sadly go on every day. I think it is great how Viveca can put it out there in a way to make people open their eyes. I also loved how this mostly all took place in France.
I would have gave this 5 stars but I could never really read this book again, it was very upsetting. I also got a bit confused about 3/4 into the book when Venia and Ellen started to show up, I was wondering why there were more characters. I know this is a stand alone and despite how much it made me cringe, I still want to read the rest of the series. I look forward to reading other novels by Viveca Benoir.
Okay, let me start off by saying that I did read To Murder Matt and knowing all that I know from that book, I would most definitely recommend reading that whether be it after or before. That being said, get ready to be stumped off your ass with this book. I went into thinking that I would change my mind about him. Boy, was I wrong! I dislike him even more, if that's possible. Maybe not so much dislike. I love to hate him. His depravity knows no bounds.
This is a Crazy Ass Must Read! I can't wait to read what Viveca writes next!
********************** Heres the blurb: Matt is a devil amongst men.

********************************* Okay this is the first book I've read from Viveca Benoir.. I didn't read "To Murder Matt" first so I wasn't sure if I should read this one first.. after looking through a few reviews of "To Murder Matt" I figured it would be okay.
After reading the blurb and the first chapter.. I was getting ready to sympathize for Matt.. He had been through a lot and he wasn't very old. I felt bad for him up until he moved in with Natalia.. then everything went crazy!
I get that he had a bad rap.. but his actions.. shouldn't justify what happened to him!
Matt is truly a devil amongst men! He is awful! The stuff he does.. I can't believe I felt sorry for him!
I have to say it was well written.. the only problem I had was trying to think of the characters at certain ages.. I get that he was more mature than whatever age he was supposed to be.. but to me it wasn't believeable .. I just couldn't think of him doing the things he was doing when he was that age.
Matt: The Beginning is definitely a page turner because I wanted to know what happens!

What makes a man a monster? A murderer? A deviant? A predator? A maniac? A psychopath?
How does a young boy become any of those things? How does he become so shut off from emotion that he considers nobody? How does he lose his innocence? How does he lose the ability to feel, to love? How does he become cold and callous?
The Beginning is a novel that takes us into Matt’s life.
We were introduced to Matt when we read To Murder Matt which we absolutely loved. But in The Beginning we are taken back to Matt’s childhood and how he was ultimately moulded into the man he became.
Again Viveca Benoir has given us another brilliant read. It’s dark, confronting, raw and again highly emotional and at times disturbing. But we simply couldn’t put it down.
Again we cannot understand how this book is to be banned. The content at times can be distressing and quite disturbing but why the decision was made to ban it stills leaves us dumbfounded. And why???? There are two reasons for this…
1. Reading both To Murder Matt and Matt -The Beginning, the author clearly explains that if at anytime a reader should feel uncomfortable and unable to continue, simply put it down. As readers we are not forced to read a novel, it’s a choice.
2. The subject matter in both novels while again at times graphic, disturbing and confronting, for us it is simply no different than picking up an autobiography with the same subject matter.
Again for us as bloggers/readers we just simply don’t understand the bureaucracy behind the decision.
To Viveca Benoir again thank you very much for giving us a heartbreaking read. Full of feeling and written with such depth we could feel the emotions throughout the pages. Congratulations on another amazing novel.
We look forward to reading more of your work and wish you all the very best.
This was the first work of Viveca Benoir's that I have read. I looked at the synopsis for To Murder Matt and wondered why the main character was so twisted and despised. After reading Matt-the Beginning I can more fully understand why Matt is such a tormented and hated character. I like Ms. Benoir's style very much. The story is well paced and the action is rapid fire. So much happened in the first thirty pages, I found myself stopping to process what the poor young man was going through.
This book begins with Matt's tragic birth, along with a sister he never knew existed. The twins are sent to separate adoptive homes and live completely different lives, each never knowing the other live nearby. Matt's life is hardly ideal. His mother loves him intensely however, to say his father is an ass, is an understatement. The abuse Matt and his mother suffer is the driving force behind much of the development of Matt's character. Throughout the story he is thrown curveball after curveball, molding him into an young man who uses sex for power and control. He is ambitious and headstrong and if someone crosses him there will be retaliation. No spoilers here, just be aware that Matt has seen a lot of crap in his life and except for his mother no one seems to have given him a fair shake. I am looking forward to reading other books by Ms. Benoir
After reading "To Murder Matt" I was left reeling about Matt and what could have possibly have happened in his past to make him the way he was and in Matt: the beginning we find out just that. Can I just say that you do not have to had read "To Murder Matt" before reading this one.
To be honest it makes me hate him even more - if that is possible. At first I was beginning to feel sorry for him - everything he had to endure from his father and his childhood, that is until he got sent to live with a foster family - a rich family at that.
From there I lost all sympathy for him and realised he was just pure evil. From the moment he realised what he was doing and that he just kept on that path, not to mention the things he does (although I had insight from reading To Murder Matt) shocked me.
Some readers may find this a hard read due the nature of the storyline but there is no denying that this is a book you cant put down as you want to know more about him.
It was good to get the little insight - or reminder depending on if you have read the other books - on certain characteres he meets which leads up to "To Murder Matt".
A good book. Twisted, dark, surprising plot. Well written with a good storyline. I had read To Murder Matt so knew that this was going to be along the same lines. Have heard there are possibly two other standalone books being written by Viveca Benoir this year that are related to this one. One about Venia (hot chick with serious trust issues) and Marie (twin sister). Matt gives men a bad name. Ultimately I feel that Matt was corrupted by women (Natalie and Julia) and so we can't blame him entirely when he goes off the rails. Every woman screws him over. Of course he will want revenge.
Matt the Beginning is the prequel to To Murder Matt by Viveca Benoir. This book takes you through Matt's troubled start from birth and asks the question does life make you who you are or are those dark urges always inside you from birth?
Matt faces unimaginable challenges throughout his early life and is often let down by those in the position to protect and care for him, this book did make me empathise with Matt at some points, I have read To Murder Matt and so know what he goes onto become and be so this book helped me get inside his mind to see how he became the man in the next book and how he met some of the characters who are also in the next book, but he evolves through this book from making bad choices to delighting in the torment and power he can cause for his own gain... A true Devil in disguise that walks the earth.
Yes Matt has a heart in this book, it's not fully cold and black yet, he has moments where he cares, feels and thinks of others but then someone lets him down or events don't work out as planned: this highly intelligent and ambitious young man won't be let down and revels in his revenge, retaliation and retribution upon those who wrong him: via sex, manipulation or plain old black mail (some methods will leave you feeling uncomfortable so be aware) ...He has so many points where you hope that maybe this is the one person who can help, show or save Matt from his chosen path but no, the stage is now set for Matt and this ending leads seamlessly into To Murder Matt.
A twisted tale of epic proportions that makes you question nature versus nurture.
Matt was never loved by his father. His mother was the one who loved him. Doing chores day in and day out, never being able to please his father. His father beat him, cussed and yelled at him. He couldn't make his father happy, no matter what he did. The drink is what made his father the way he was. Mean and hateful was all he was.
Matt made friends with Marie, a girl from his school. They liked each other. He didn't have any other friends. Marie went to his house one evening to see him and take him some biscuits and what she witnessed that evening, forever stayed with Marie. She never forgot and she never turned her back to him from that moment on.
Matt could hear his father yelling. He knew his father was hurting his Mother. Matt went to the house and what he saw and then what he did would forever change him from a young boy, to a scared boy. One who went to his friend, told her what happened and he left, running, scared.
Marie had to tell her mother what happened when word got out of what happened at Matt's house. Upon hearing the events from that night, the police knew that Matt was only defending his mother and only wanted to talk to him about it. Matt didn't know this until later and Marie's Mom picked him a foster family to live with.
Matt was doing what he was told to do. He went to school, he played with his new little sister, Veronique. He was trying to be good.
When his foster mother became pregnant, his foster father left the house in a rage. During that argument is how Matt found out he was the father and his foster father's last words to him were, Never trust a woman.

3.5 STARS! This was an interesting book to say the least. It read like it may have been written in a different language first and then translated to English which made the style of writing and flow of the book a bit getting used to. This book is actually the second book in the series with To Murder Matt being the first book and I'm so glad that I took the suggestion of other readers to read this book first. This book gives you insight as to why Matt is the way he is which is a vengeful, manipulative SOB who does whatever it takes to get whatever he wants even if it means destroying people in the process. In the beginning I felt really sorry for Matt and was rooting for him to overcome all life's obstacles that were being thrown his way but by the end of the book I can understand why there may be so many people that may want him dead. Basically Matt gets tired of all the BS in life and being on the receiving end of horrible people and situations that he ends up with the attitude "if you can't beat em, join em". When Matt was a little boy all he dreamed of was becoming a famous race car driver with tons of money and material things and to be adored by everyone; well he gets his wish but unfortunately to get to the top he had to step on others and did vile things to get where he is. This book touches on subjects that are vital to the story and may not be for everyone but it's written in such as way as to not glamorize these subjects. Good book! Will definitely read To Murder Matt.
This book was written second in the series but takes place before the first, I strongly recommend reading it AFTER To Murder Matt, as I did.
You read about how Matt's life started out and if there are any triggers into how he became as evil as he is in the first book. Matt didn't have a straight forward start in life and it doesn't get much better for him, I felt a lot of the time that he was let down by all the adults around he which gave him the resentment in himself to make others suffer and in turn make himself feel in control.
You see early on how he has been let down and its almost as though he could have been a good man if things had been different for him. At every turn he was let down, I almost felt sorry for him but still couldn't excuse his behaviour to everyone in to Murder Matt.
You can see where he totally loses himself and starts his life of revenge and control, he quickly manipulates certain people and situations he finds himself in to benefit himself.
Almost at the end of the book you really think he is going to be ok, but he finds himself alone and in pain like he has never felt and that's when the 'real' Matt emerges and the terror begins for all who know him.
Main characters are Matt, Natalie, Marie, Julia, Venia, and a brief glimpse of Ellen
This book takes you through Matt's journey from his first breaths. How he goes through life being shaped by people and events around him. He can go one way or another. The fact that there is a book called "To murder Matt" already tells us he can't turn out well. It's already hinting at a car crash in slow motion. And we get to see him rise and fall.
One after another the women come into his life. They change him bit by bit. He falls into sex, into love and as he is spurned by one, he plans his revenge on all women. No surprise there. Matt isn't an angel. For the reader there are the what might have beens. The 'what ifs'. What if that hadn't happened? How would a nice Matt be?
Matt shows he has a heart in this book and I, for one, felt hope. After all, isn't that what he ultimately wants and is searching for? Love? What could the love of a good woman do for Matt?
Matt is damaged goods. He starts off broken and by the end he's the nasty Matt we know and love. Totally beyond redemption.
A devil amongst men? He's a bl**dy sexy one at that.
I read this prequel about Matt hoping I would feel some sympathy for the character after reading the first book, but it really didn't serve me that way. It is true that the poor child (who was born a twin and then was separated from his sister) went through many terrible experiences as a boy and it made me feel sorry for him at first. However, after his true nature was exposed (there was an evil deep down inside that even true love could not cover) I despised his character and held my breath knowing anyone who came in contact with him in his story would be doomed. It was an interesting and at times difficult book to read (child molestation is a trigger for me) but I think it was not going to help Matt's case with me at all. I was shocked when I read the first book and this one was equally disturbing...but for dark reads, that's a good thing. The character of Devia is introduced and will be the subject of the next book.
IN To Murder Matt by Viveca Benoir, Matt was hated, wanted dead even. But that was to be expected as he was evil and nasty and abusive as well ...so much so I wanted to murder him and he is a character in a book!!.... Then I read Matt the beginning.. Raw, gritty dark and twisted is the tale of what made Matt Matt. Epic writing skills bring to life the lies, loves and betrayal that molded Matt into what he became. A book raw and edgy and filled with characters you will love to hate so much that you cannot put the book down and by the very end of the journey your jaw will be slack from the jaw dropping action and you will feel wrung out emotionally. The epic skills it took and the amazing mind that came up with this book is to be applauded. NOTE this book is not for anyone under 18 or faint of heart
This is a VERY dark read. I have seen that this is the story to explain why Matt is the way he is. Well this book definitely explains why any sane person would have no chance of staying that way. The abuse, and horrors Matt lives through starting at a very young age, would surely turn even the best person evil. There is not a lot to say about this storyline at least other than this explains so much of what Ive heard about Murder Matt.(Havent read it yet) I can however say that this was very well written, with a lot of thought and talent. Ms. Benoir is a very talented writer. And I definitely look forward to reading many more things from her.
This book takes you back to the begining of how Matt became so troubled! It started from birth so the question you need to ask is are we all born the same and is it the way we are brought up maybe evil in just in some of us from the start.. I was so upset for the little boy at the beginning, But it doesn't last long and by the end I wanted him bed .. Matt is the devil walking amongst us! would not recommened if you have never read a dark book before, you need to have some experiance with what you are about to read !!! This was amazing done! this book gives you the inside of matt from young age to the man he become not good one by the way! he's evil, small knows how to use you in the right now. pure evil to the bone. even all s*** he done i still feel sorry for kid matt even knowing what he turns into. "monster" that dooms everything that comes into his life even true love can't help him...
I read this after "to murder Matt" and once again I was not disappointed, this book is dark and twisted but does explain why he became how he was, I almost started to thaw to Matt and feel a little sympathy towards him but then turned the page and soon got over it
Another great book by the author. I really hated Matt in the first book, but after reading this book I have come to like Matt. He had a hard life and that influenced his future.
Here we have the story of Matt. Will you forgive him? Understand him? Love or hate him? You have to read this and make up your own mind.
'To Murder Matt' is a controversial book that challenges even the most broad minded and intelligent of us. Matt - the Beginning is no different. It weaves, twists and takes us on a journey of self discovery. Both books take your mind down avenues that you have never thought of, and often never wish to think of.
We emerge, like the book characters, stronger, wiser and more understanding of how life can be for some people.
Not everyone has an easy life. Matt, and those around him, are proof of this.
