The Ampersand Effect

Rate this book
High above the coastal forests of Aetheridge, Tobin Maes is an expert at finding the lost. As a highly skilled search-and-rescue pilot, she thrives in the chaos of emergency missions, where split-second decisions mean the difference between life and death. A dedicated pilot with a haunted past, Tobin finds solace in the skies, but on the ground she struggles to let go of the ghosts that tether her heart to loss. An upcoming hospital gala is meant to be a celebration of her team's life-saving efforts, but for Tobin, it’s just another reminder of what she’s sworn to avoid—connections, commitments, and the risk of losing again.

Dr. Grier Savage has spent years building a career at Aetheridge Children's Hospital, where her fierce dedication to her patients is matched only by her devotion to family. As a chiropractor and department chair, she’s a steadfast advocate for those in her care. But beneath her confident exterior lies a woman hesitant to step beyond the comfort of her found family. When she’s nominated for a prestigious award, it’s just another reminder of how much she’s given to others—and how little she’s allowed herself to take.

When a chance helicopter ride brings them together, Tobin and Grier find themselves on a collision course neither expected. As their paths intertwine, professional admiration gives way to a slow-burning attraction, challenging them to confront their pasts, their fears, and the possibility that love—like flight—requires taking a leap.

Perfect for fans of heartfelt romance, strong female leads, and slow-burn chemistry, The Ampersand Effect is an adventurous love story about finding the courage to soar when you’ve spent a lifetime treading water.

Cassie is a late-blooming lesbian, chiropractor, acupuncturist, and full-time romantic about women who feel too much and love anyway. By day, she runs a solo healthcare practice focused on helping people feel more at home in their bodies; by night, she writes emotionally charged sapphic romance that blends tenderness, grit, humor, and just enough spice to keep things interesting. She believes healing—whether physical or emotional—is rarely linear, and that truth shows up in both her work and her fiction.

Cassie lives in South Dakota with her daughter, though her heart is perpetually pulled toward mountains, wildfire skies, and the kind of longing that makes people reckless in the best ways. She writes for queer women, late bloomers, and anyone who has ever chosen Plan B (& C…& M) and found unexpected joy there. Her stories celebrate resilience, chosen family, and the quiet bravery it takes to let someone really see you.

When she’s not writing, she can be found hyping other sapphic authors, hunting down the best doughnuts while traveling, or reminding anyone within earshot that vulnerability is not a weakness—it’s a catalyst. From the fire comes the phoenix, after all.

The Ampersand Effect tells the story of helicopter pilot Tobin Maes and doctor Grier Savage, where the representation of the ampersand (&) becomes a symbol of infinite possibilities.

Tobin, a helicopter pilot for search and rescue missions, is in her element in the cockpit, where nothing can upset her. Her private life is a different story, however, since an accident shattered not only parts of her body but also her personal life. Out of pain and guilt, she has built a wall around her heart so that no one can hurt her, and she will never hurt a partner again.

As a chiropractor and department chair at Aetheridge Children's Hospital, Grier has made a name for herself and alleviates the suffering of many children with her treatments. But sometimes fate has other plans, and losing a patient is very difficult to deal with.

Their first meeting was quite flirtatious. Although the chemistry between them was immediately apparent, the love story develops slowly, which suits the characters well. Shaped by their pasts, both have to learn to trust again. Tobin in particular struggles with her trauma. Tobin and Grier's journey is sometimes simple and sometimes complicated, always a little chaotic, but also enveloped in family and friends. They have to fight for love and sometimes risk more than just their hearts.

Both women are complex and multi-layered characters who quickly grow on me. I love it when I learn about the MCs' pasts, as it allows me to understand them better and better. And here, the author does a good job. The families and friends are also wonderful additions, bringing a lot of warmth and love. Various topics are addressed in subplots, some of which are very serious and disturbing, but others bring fun and puppy chaos.

I have two small comments: the first half is a bit repetitive, especially when it comes to Tobin's and Grier's thoughts, which leads to my second point, that the story is long. I think if the story were written more compactly, it would benefit and be even better. There are also a few loose ends, but these may be continued in a second book.

But for a debut novel, it's a good and very emotional, sometimes heartbreaking story, but with a happy end. Congratulations!

Thanks to the author and BookSirens for providing an ARC for an honest review.

I really really loved the overall story and the premise but sadly the plot was poorly executed. This book is 622 pages long but very thin and short on the story. Too many loose ends and unresolved issues which I will obviously not go into detail here, but I believe the author is well aware.

This book places too much emphasis on the sex. Too many sex scenes, the sexual tension, the sexual innuendos etc. While I'm not against it, it unfortunately diverts the focus on what I actually wanted to read, i.e. the actual story which is terribly told with a lot of skipping, cutting out details and foregone and forgotten subplots.

I think 60% of this book revolves around the themes of sex while the remainder is the story which as mentioned wasn't well written out.

It was a very tiring 600+ pages of reading with not much satisfaction...

The ampersand effect, is a sapphic romance that gives you all the feels. The pull between Grier & Tobin is palpable through the pages, how they banter, flirt and challenge each other. Add to that great written spice and this book is just chef’s kiss 🔥.

If you’re looking for a book that has 2 MC’s who create a beautiful love story. With each having their own bagage and trying to work and communicate through that. Give this one a chance and you won’t be disappointed.

*As a Belgian myself I was glad with the Belgian representation. If I could I would add an extra half a star just for that 😉

great

This book taught me a couple things:

Grier is pronounced Grear like fear with a G. You’re welcome, now you don’t have to mispronounce it out loud like I did 🫠.

Also, an ampersand is this thing “&” now you know 🫡.

Onward and upward!

This is a dual POV written in the third person. Both gals have their share of trauma, Tobin’s is specifically work and relationship related.

I definitely have a soft spot for stories involving OSI’s or work related PTSD, or whatever they are calling it now, given my career choices so I may be biased.

I really enjoyed the author’s approach to Tobin’s trauma especially considering she remained in the profession. I guess this might be a spoiler so don’t finish this sentence if you care but I appreciated how there wasn’t really a resolution to her trauma. I don’t find that realistic and instead going through Tobin’s journey of letting someone in and finding healthy coping mechanisms was, in my opinion, accurate and refreshing.

Grier’s a sweetheart, super patient, certainly a saint and seemingly a minx at the same time 💁‍♀️.

The chemistry between the characters was roaring (like a fire) and had its fair share of spice. Even a whole chapter worth at one point. 🤤

Instagram limited my creative freedom to a word count so I’ll put er here. Obviously everyone’s review is their own but I just wanted to provide a different perspective on the sex shenanigans because yes, both gals are often internally discussing their desire to bed the other one. One of Tobin’s biggest struggles is intimacy and her feeling of self-worth. I thought the author did a great job explaining each MC’s desire for the other, which is palpable. In doing so it really resonates how significant Tobin’s intimacy concerns are because her desire was never a secret. I personally felt the constant discussion of attraction was layered and tastefully done to reflect the truth behind it which is trauma. 🥲

It was a commitment, 622 pages but it didn’t feel long when I was reading it.

I think this is the author’s debut and I am an instant fan. I took off half a star because there was some editing and formatting weirdness but that was my only gripe.

There are heavier themes hence my reference to rollercoasters. The author includes the TWs at the beginning.

Engaging, Reflective, and Beautifully Written

"The Ampersand Effect" is one of those books that quietly sneaks up on you and then stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. It’s thoughtful without being heavy, emotionally resonant without feeling overdone, and written with a clarity that makes the story feel both intimate and universal.

What I loved most was how the book explores connection—between people, choices, and the moments that shape who we become. The characters feel real and layered, and the relationships are handled with care and nuance. Nothing feels rushed or forced; instead, the story unfolds in a way that feels natural and earned.

The writing itself is smooth and engaging, making this an easy book to sink into while still offering plenty to reflect on. It strikes a great balance between heart and insight, which made the reading experience especially satisfying.

If you enjoy character‑driven stories that linger in your thoughts and leave you feeling a little more connected to the world (and yourself), I highly recommend *The Ampersand Effect*. A truly rewarding read.

Unusual opening sentence but once I checked the Military term it made sense. I loved the play on flight cockpit with the  private Search and Rescue business based on  fictional setting.
The explanation of the body tattoo post Tobin's helicopter  crash is amazingly visual. Next is the plan for an  Icelandic lopapeysa pattern.

The meeting with Dr  Grier Savage and Captain Tobin  is wonderfully  described. Everyone needs a grandmother  as wise and knowledgeable  as Lolo. The angst of choosing to date again and not wanting to get hurt again is cleverly written .

The story is a long slow burn  but I wouldn't like to cut anything out especially the waterfall scene.  I love spotting the wonderful title with its relevance to the tale and the banter makes you smile. Top marks for making me search up new vocabulary . I loved the symbolism of Iceland and the tattoo. Not only was the romance hot and sizzling but the Search and Rescue was too.
This is a brilliant  debut, must read novel. I seldom give 5 stars. Well done Cassie Baar

This book was a emotional rollercoaster, I laughed and I cried and I felt all the love.

The characters were lovable, I loved how it showed Tobins growth and how she managed to overcome her fears, I also liked that there wasn’t a stigma around her getting therapy, also Grier refusing to let Tobin go was so lovely.

The plot was great, extremely unique but also heartbreaking in places and also very spicy, this book was very detailed to say the least in spicy scenes.

Overall i really enjoyed this book,i feel some of it was left open for more books which I really hope there will be, I want a harrow one and a anchor one so fingers crossed for that 🤞🏻

Thank you to BookSirens & author Cassie Baar for this ARC. I’m happy to leave my honest review.

I was immediately drawn to this book because of the cover. I loved the vibrant and boldcover art with the sweetest picture of two women in love with the fireflies everywhere! It definitely snagged my attention quickly. The title of the book further intrigued me and I couldn't wait to read it! I have to say that I very much enjoyed this book and found it to be quite exquisite. The Ampersand Effect is a beautifully written slow burn sapphic romance that nestled its way into my heart. I found myself in a bit of a book hangover as the characters continue to dance around in my day to day thoughts. This will definitely be added to my re-read list!

The ampersand is the elegant representation of the power of “and” which represents more than one possibility. It represents a careful coexistence where one can be brave and afraid, guarded and vulnerable, self reliant and generous. I loved how the title of this story continued to demonstrate itself throughout the book as we are reminded time and time again about the power of the ampersand. This book was wonderful and so powerfully and seamlessly highlighted themes of grief, control, vulnerability and allowing yourself to want more. Tobin is a search and rescue pilot who is the best at what she does. However, being the best at something often comes at a cost to the rest of your life. She is focused and stoic. We learn early through some pretty terrifying acts of heroism that she is the woman you want if you are in trouble. Nevertheless, she is haunted by guilt and grief from a loss she believes she could have prevented. Losing family is enough to destroy us, I know that first hand, but believing you could have prevented it allows for a more destructive form of grief than many can comprehend. Tobin is very much a product of her past trauma and keeps everyone at arms length…so that means that relationships are generally a non starter. That is until she meets Grier! Dr. Grier Savage is well pretty savage herself! She is a department chair at Aetheridge Children’s Hospital and has revolved her entire life around caring for her patients. She respects her colleagues, has created a lovely sort of found family but seems to avoid the risks of a romantic life. She is kind, compassionate, gentle and everything I would want in a partner.

Tobin and Grier really aren't that different. Sure, in a great many ways they live their lives differently but I found them to be perfect together. Their meeting was perfect and pretty tension filled. I feel like their chemistry was palpable right away. Grier must accompany a pediatric patient on a helicopter medical stranger and the pilot is none other than Tobin Maes! I really enjoyed the initial meeting riddled with a sort of professional admiration coupled with an obvious romantic curiosity. The pacing of the story from their initial meeting is spot on. The story moves along at a believable time journey and I felt everything between Tobin and Grier developed organically. The gala is where I could see so much growth and connection between Tobin and Grier. There was a moment of sheer vulnerability for Tobin and for once it feels like someone is there to rescue her for a change. So much happens in this book and there are definitely some roller coaster type moments but overall it is emotionally gratifying and such a great read.

The love story between Grier and Tobin is not all smooth sailing and I appreciated that. Cassie Baar does an excellent job of creating relatable, flawed, vulnerable and highly complex characters. Life is messy and that is what makes it beautiful. Well, the journey for Grier and Tobin was sort of messy and complicated as Tobin worked through a lot of unresolved grief and trauma. But the messiness made me appreciate the tenderness. They were real people with real problems and they fought for each other…they chose each other. I feel like I fell in love right along with them. Baar’s writing was clean and emotionally resonant. She does a wonderful job of developing authentic technical scenes and rescue scenarios. Baar was so successful in creating a character driven, multi layered story with wonderful dialogue and the power of the ampersand woven throughout. I really enjoyed the slow burn chemistry and the true connection between Grier and Tobin. I especially appreciated the deliciously spicy romantic interludes. They were written with special attention to intimacy and detail and truly made me see the growing love between our leading ladies. Well done Cassie Baar!

I enjoyed reading about Tobin and Grier’s journey so much. They were women I quickly grew to care about and I was thrilled for them to find in each other a love so wholesome that it made me swoon. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone in the mood for an emotional and tender sapphic romance with characters you will root for! I was impressed by this debut novel by Cassie Baar and will look for more from her in the future.

The Ampersand Effect by Cassie Baar is a swoony, big-hearted sapphic romance about what happens in the space between who we are & who we allow ourselves to be when love is on the line.
At its heart, this is a story of care & courage. Tobin, a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot, thrives in danger and decisiveness—steady hands, locked doors. Grier, a chiropractor devoted to easing children’s pain, works in gentler margins, where patience & presence matter most. Baar pairs them beautifully, letting attraction bloom in the quiet moments as much as the charged ones. The chemistry crackles because these women don’t just want each other—they challenge each other.
The romance unfolds with confidence & restraint, allowing longing & vulnerability to share the page. When the story turns physical, the sex scenes are undeniably hot—intimate, trusting, and deeply felt—never detached from emotion. Desire here is written as connection, as risk, as a choice to be known.
And then there’s Tobin’s journey—the true ampersand of the novel. Strength & softness. Control & surrender. Baar excels at showing how hard it can be for someone so capable to admit they want more, need more, deserve more. Grier doesn’t fix Tobin; she meets her. They become a partnership, not a rescue—love as an invitation rather than a demand.
The Ampersand Effect is sexy & tender, grounded & soaring—a romance that understands love isn’t about choosing one thing or the other, but learning to live in the and. If you’re looking for a sapphic love story with heat, heart, and emotional payoff, this one absolutely delivers.

The Ampersand Effect tells the story of Tobin and Dr. Grier Savage, two women brought together in the high-pressure world of helicopter rescues, both carrying unresolved grief and complicated pasts. Their slow-burning chemistry unfolds between dangerous missions and deeply personal struggles.

In the first 30% of the book, I felt like the story moved through almost the same emotional cycle a few times. It wasn’t repetitive enough to stop reading, but I did have to push through because I really wanted to see where it would go. Fortunately, after that point, the story noticeably improves. The characters become clearer in their motivations, their actions feel more logical, and the emotional development gains depth.

There’s a lot of backstory and personal context woven around the romance. While this sometimes slows the pace, it does give the main characters real substance. You understand what drives them, what they’re afraid of, and what they stand for—which makes the romance feel more grounded.

Overall, it’s a slow-burn sapphic romance with strong emotional themes. It requires a bit of patience at the start, but if you stick with it, the payoff is worth it.

Wow, what a great book. Very captivating. The Ampersand Effect draws you in right from the very beginning and reads quickly. Every chapter, every scene is exciting.

Take the journey with Tobin & Grier. Two sultry women with important careers & with big hearts for everyone around them. Experience all the emotions that come from Tobin & Grier’s relationship - from patience and respect in the beginning to compassion, trust, belief and affirmation. They both have baggage (some good, some sad). Enjoyed reading how they navigated through all of it.

Above all, it’s a story of ❤️. Like all relationships there are challenges, bumps in the road, but communication, understanding and some passion WINS!

Get the book - it’s a GOOD ONE. 🔥👩‍✈️🚁🏥

The author leaves us hanging in a couple of scenes. Just going to assume we’re going to see a sequel to this one?!?! Can’t wait. Bring it on.

Wow this book gives you all the feels in this rollercoaster of a ride!

The longing between both characters is so strong you can feel it through each page! The amount of times I screamed “JUST KISS ALREADY” at the start of the book.
I love their banter, flirting and humour. Add in the spice between them and ugh! Chefs kiss! This book draws you in right from the beginning and every chapter is exciting. The book is heavy on the spice - a full chapter at one point *blush* but it doesn’t overshadow the story behind it.

Both Grier and Tobin have a beautiful love story, despite having their own baggage they still communicate and work through it. Bonus points for no 3rd act break up.

For a debut novel it’s emotional and at times heartbreaking with that all needed happy ending. Got a feeling this could be a series and if so, I’m so here for it!

I was given this book complimentary from Book Sirens in e-book form in return for my honest review. Everything stated in this review is of my own opinion and I was not compensated monetarily for providing this review.
Let's be clear from the start, this is a romance, The love story of two people all the rest is a backdrop allowing the author to explore the chemistry between the two m/c.
This book does get very hot and steamy so be forewarned but a lot is necessary given the story. There is also a little tear jerking subplot but this is not the main focus of the story the same for the other digressions
Romance books have a large readership so I expect this will do well.

I liked the idea behind the story, but the execution almost lost me. At times, the writing style comes across as someone trying too hard to sound intelligent, between being long winded and the use of archaic words that don’t add to the plot. I struggled to get through the book, asking myself repeatedly if a scene was almost done because I was getting bored. Despite the 600+ pages count, there are a few plot holes and unresolved issues, and slopping transitions between scenes. Some chapters abruptly ended with no transition, then the following chapter would pick up at some undetermined point in the future. Other times it felt like a sex scene was thrown in to fill a hole.

I really enjoyed this slow burn sapphic romance! Tobi the fearless pilot is very hard to love, despite of her physical beauty, she is deeply insecure, a commitment phobic and guards her heart with ten foot steel wall. Grier the respectable doctor is easy to love, she is the ideal doctor, compassionate, competent and with a heart of gold. I admire her boldness and patient in pursuit of her true love, it takes a lot of courage to love someone with deep emotional trauma. Overall, I like this book with tons of drama and roller coaster rides of emotions. Personally, I would much prefer the romance in a normal ordinary setting, but this book is a good start for the author's debut!
