Starr by Camille Charpentier was a really sweet and meaningful children’s picture book that I genuinely enjoyed reading. The story about a little star who feels like he does not shine as brightly as the others felt very relatable and emotionally honest in a way that young readers can understand. One line that really stayed with me was when it explains that Starr may not be the best dancer but he dances in his own way and still loves it. That simple message about confidence and joy feels very powerful especially for students who struggle with comparison and self doubt. As a middle school special education teacher I could easily see myself using this book to start conversations about self acceptance and recognizing personal strengths. Many of my students need reminders that learning and growing do not look the same for everyone and this story presents that idea in a gentle and encouraging way. I also appreciated the soft colorful illustrations and the connection to the Big Dipper because it adds a small academic layer that could spark curiosity about space while still keeping the emotional focus on identity and belonging. Overall this felt like a warm supportive story that celebrates individuality and would be a great addition to a classroom library or a social emotional learning lesson.

Starr by Camille Charpentier is an adorable children’s book that gently teaches kids to always be glad they are who they are.

The story follows a star named Starr who has a super important job and purpose: being part of the Big Dipper. This story is so creative and perfectly child friendly it delivers such a powerful, impactful message to young readers while keeping them totally engaged in this short, sweet little book.

The illustrations are incredibly cute, and they almost make the stars feel like they’re actually moving and dancing right on the pages. You really get to see Starr perform those famous head spins for the Spinning Star Jig Show.

I highly recommend this book for families with younger children. It is perfect for bedtime stories or especially if they love stargazing!

Just Be You!

Can Starr make it into the Spinning Star Jig show? He wants to impress Monsieur Barishstarkoff but his spinning is off. With a lot of practice, will he make it? A fun way to teach about being true to yourself and it is okay to be different.

Thank you so much to Deborah Schmidt for the ebook to read and review.

Starr loves dancing, but he’s not good at spins like Sara. Starr has an important job as the tail star in the big dipper. When he tries to learn to spin he loses his joy and his light grows dim. His parents help remind him why he’s so special and hope his light will come back.

What a sweet story of self-confidence, belief in what you can achieve and never giving up. I really loved how the parents were fully supportive of Starr and just wanted to show him how special he was just as he was and that whether he could spin or not didn’t change how special he was.

I really loved how he kept trying even when he was getting sadder about not being like the other dances, he still kept trying. He did give up but only for a little while as he had people that cared about him and soon he was back to trying again. It’s such an important thing to teach young readers.

The illustrations were large, some of them were funny seeing the stars acting like humans during the day time, it was quite funny to see. I liked seeing the stars, I liked seeing them forming the constellations which looked really pretty.

This was a very important and sweet read for children to learn that they are loved and that they are who they are that doesn’t change how people feel about them. It also shows that if you really try you can learn and achieve anything you dream of, even if you do it differently to others. You are a bright light so let it shine on.

Starr is a beautifully uplifting reminder that self‑acceptance is where our true glow begins. This story gently shows that comparing ourselves to someone else’s shine only dims our own. Instead, it encourages us to look inward, discover what makes us uniquely special, and embrace the fact that everyone’s light is different—and that’s exactly what makes the world so vibrant.

What I loved most is how the book celebrates diversity in talents and personalities. It reminds us that joy comes from honouring who we are, not who we think we should be. When we learn to be at peace with ourselves, our light becomes something we can proudly share with the world.

But when we feel inadequate, that glow can start to fade—and the world truly loses something irreplaceable. Starr is a heartfelt call to nurture our own spark, because every single one of us is a star in our own way.

⭐️ A gentle, hopeful read about authenticity, inner strength, and shining from the inside out.

STARR by Camille Charpentier is a children's picture book about a star, named Starr. This book shows constellations, for young readers which is great as we love learning incorporated into our books. It also shows how a family tree can work for stars or human beings:) The illustrations are fantastic with bright colors and also movement which really makes the book pop for young readers! Starr gets to participate in a star show at his academy and he makes a plan to become a better dancer/spinner in his class for the show. I loved how the parents are so supportive of Starr and tell him that everyone has a special place in the world, a great lesson for young readers! I think this is a great book to share with young readers about how everyone is special and has a special place in this world, no one is exactly like me and you. This is also a great story for young readers who aren't so great in one way but can be fantastic in others! You don't have to be perfect in every way, what a great message! I will be sharing this with my other parent friends and followers like you!

Reading Starr by Camile Charpentier was an emotional and interesting experience. The story follows Starr as she goes through challenges that shape who she is and force her to grow as a person. What I liked most about the book was how real the characters felt. Their struggles, emotions, and relationships seemed genuine, which made it easy to connect with them. Charpentier’s writing is simple to read but still very meaningful, and it keeps the reader interested from beginning to end. Some moments in the story were heartbreaking, while others felt hopeful and inspiring. I also appreciated how the book showed the importance of staying strong during difficult times and learning more about yourself. The pacing of the novel made me want to keep reading because I was always curious about what would happen next. Overall, Starr is a powerful and relatable book that leaves readers thinking about resilience, identity, and personal growth long after finishing it.

I received an electronic ARC from Stress Free Book Marketing.
Beautiful and gentle story of a young star who struggles to be like everyone else. Starr wants to be part of the dance show but can't master his spins. He works hard and definitely shows perseverance, but it is not to be. He decides to give up until his parents talk with him about how amazing he is. It's at that point that he discovers he can spin too - just in a unique way. I appreciate the ending where the dance instructor also acknowledges how special he is and lets him spin in his own way. An affirming story to share together as families or in classes to support and nurture individual growth. I love the softly focused illustration style and especially laughed at Starr on his skateboard. This captured the overall message so well.

Starr by Camille Charpentier is a heartwarming children’s story about confidence, perseverance, and celebrating what makes us unique. The book follows young Starr, a five-year-old star in the Ursa Major constellation, who worries that he doesn’t shine as brightly as the other stars around him. One memorable moment occurs when Starr becomes so discouraged by falling during dance practice that he throws his dance shoes into space and decides to give up. Another touching element is when his fading light reflects his growing self-doubt, showing young readers how believing in yourself can make all the difference. Through encouragement from his parents and a renewed sense of joy, Starr learns that being different is what makes his light truly special.

I was looking for a book to read to my niece when I came across the book " Starr" by Camille Charpentier. I thought this book was so adorable. From the cute illustrations of Starr and his story about keeping his star bright. The illustrations make you feel even more connected to the book. My niece was hooked and asked to read the book every time she comes over. It also got her asking questions and being interested in stars and astronomy. I love the concepts that the book instills in the reader's mind. The self acceptance, self love and self pride are definitely the main themes for the book. It shows that it's ok to be different and to never dull your shine.

Reading Starr by Camille Charpentier really resonated with me as someone who spends a lot of time encouraging little ones to believe in themselves. Starr’s struggles in dance class and his fading light capture that moment when a fixed mindset sneaks in and kids start thinking they have to be perfect to shine. I love how the story gently shifts toward a growth mindset, reminding readers that joy, effort, and being yourself matter so much more than comparison. Penny Weber’s adorable, playful illustrations add so much heart and charm. It’s definitely made its way into our regular bedtime rotation, and I know we’ll be reaching for it again and again.

As a mom and a special education teacher, I’m always looking for books that truly connect with kids. I recently read Starr to my class and they were immediately drawn in. The illustrations by Penny Weber are beautiful and really help bring the story to life. My students loved studying the pictures while we read together.

The story is sweet and easy for young readers to follow, and it opened up great conversations in our classroom about feelings, kindness, and believing in yourself. This is a lovely book for both home and school and one I’m happy to add to my classroom library.

Starr is an adorable reminder that everyone shines in their own way. Starr’s wobbling dance steps and big feelings are so relatable, and his journey from “I’m not good enough” to glowing with confidence is told with such heart. The bright, cozy illustrations make the whole story feel like a hug. I especially liked the part his parents remind him that joy, not perfection, is what keeps his light glowing. It is the kind of message every child (and honestly, every adult) needs to hear. A quick, uplifting read that leaves you smiling and rooting for your own inner sparkle.

This picture book has a very comforting feel from start to finish. The story follows a young star who is trying to figure out where he fits in, which is something many kids experience. I liked how the writing keeps the message simple but meaningful. The illustrations are soft and expressive, adding warmth to every page. It feels like a story meant to reassure children rather than teach a hard lesson. The overall theme encourages confidence in a natural way. It’s a sweet, uplifting read that would work well for quiet story time.

My 8 year old granddaughter read this to / with me and we both absolutely loved it! The pictures were so bright and fun, the story was easy to read and the moral of the story was perfect. I loved how simple the idea of dancing and Starr realizing how special it is to find your own way to ‘twirl’. The story did a great job of being able to relate to my granddaughter. This was a great twist on teaching children to never give up just because at first they don’t seem to be as good as someone else. I would highly recommend this read to everyone reading to a kid.

This book is adorable. Starr is such a lovable character and the whole concept of his light fading when he’s sad really resonated. The illustrations are vibrant and fun, and the message about embracing what makes you unique comes through without feeling forced. Kids dealing with comparison or trying new things will definitely relate to Starr’s struggle with dance class. It’s a quick, engaging read that actually has heart. Really happy I found this one.

Never let anything dull your sparkle! When I was a kid I was fascinated with stars and constellations, so I thought it was a nice touch giving a background of what constellation Starr is from! I found this book really charming and easy to get into. The space setting makes it feel imaginative and fun without being confusing for younger readers. The main character is relatable, especially for kids who sometimes doubt themselves. The language is clear and flows nicely when read aloud. I also liked how the visuals add personality and humor. It keeps a positive mood throughout. This would be a great pick for a classroom or bedtime shelf.

I loved this book! I loved the message it sends and the relatability my daughters had with it! Both my girls love to dance but just being silly kids and seeing how Starr was able to figure out how to be a good Dancer in his own way was enlightening to my kids. This will be a repeat book for a long time! I loved how the author emphasized how special everyone is no matter how well one child can “spin” a certain way! It was so easy for kids to understand. I would definitely recommend this book.
