Born to Ruin: A Dark Political Fantasy

Rate this book

"An intense, immersive read from start to finish. Each scene feels vivid and cinematic." — Amazon Reviewer

A brilliantly dark epic fantasy debut inspired by the ruthless politics of Ptolemaic Egypt and the bloody rise of its most infamous queens.

In an empire where blood dictates power, daughters are raised to rule beside their brothers. To keep the lineage pure, the dynasty marries within itself. It is law. It is faith. It is the foundation of the throne.

When the Emperor announces he will take his own daughter as his next Empress, obedience becomes a fate worse than death.

Refusal means execution.
Submission means becoming the living symbol of a system she despises.

So the princess chooses treason instead.

Within the palace walls she begins a quiet war—building secret alliances, testing loyalties, and preparing for the one act that could shatter the empire: the assassination of her father.

But power is never taken without a price.

What begins as a desperate fight for freedom slowly becomes something far darker. Each choice demands another sacrifice. Each victory pulls her further from the person she once was.

And while the court tears itself apart, the world beyond the capital begins to stir.

Rival empires watch.
Borders tighten.
Armies gather.

What started as a daughter's rebellion may become the spark that sets entire continents on fire.

Because some rulers are not born to save empires.
They are born to ruin them.

Well. I certainly started this book thinking WTF as the “relation”ships were a bit cringe. However, the storyline kept me interested throughout and needing to continue.

While I do love different POV , I wish it was more clearly stated so that you knew right away whose POV you were reading instead of figuring it out as you read each chapter.

Overall I really enjoyed this read. I appreciate a good plot that keeps your attention and leaves you wanting more. A few times I was surprised as what seemed predictable took a different turn. I didn’t have an overwhelming character attachment but enough to keep invested. The ending definitely made me want to read the next one and kept my thoughts on the book and next possibilities.

ARC read. 3.5/5 Overall, it kept me reading and wondering what the heck would happen next. I feel as though there were a lot of character introductions but not much development to allow one to become attached to them or really feel for their situations. The twists and turns are many, but do they add to the plot or the confusion? And the epilogue, well, that was an entirely different shift.

I would definitely give the second in the series a chance.

Great read!!! It gives the treachery of GOT!! Without giving spoilers, the FMC will surprise you!!! She finds strength in her pain/situation and wields it like a weapon! It’s also a little magic thrown in as well!!! If you want a good and captivating fantasy read, get this book!!

***ARC Review***
3.5⭐️/5
Spice Level: 0

This story isn’t about love. It’s about survival in the cruelest ways amongst madness. Aeternae (FMC) will do anything and everything to avoid the fate the Emperor has bestowed on her, even at the cost of meeting Death at its door. Secrets cost lives. Loyalties are tested. Who is the savior, and who is the villain?

Unexpected read that had me questioning what I got myself into. I was thrown for a loop, as the relationships within the story aren’t my forte. Please keep in mind, the story itself is based in an era where these relationships were common, as it meant “pure bloodlines.” It’s not a bad story, it simply contains topics that were overwhelming for me. I pushed through simply because I truly enjoyed Helena Rein’s writing. The multi-POV did get a bit confusing, as you’re not sure who is speaking. The pacing was not rushed, but didn’t drag out either. It was the perfect build-up to how it ends. Character development could use some work to increase connectivity to them. I was only able to truly connect with Aeternae and none of the other characters that play an important role.

Overall, Helena Rein delivers a story that keeps you interested, questioning what happens next, and leaves you gasping thinking you figured out the plot. I am interested in what happens in Book 2, as the ending is quite the cliffhanger!

Note: Please pay attention to the trigger warnings!

I will always love different POVs, though I do wish the character’s name was under the chapter heading. And as much as I love unique names, this book had the best ones yet. Am I saying them correctly? Probably not LOL. 'It is better to try than to continue to endure in fear' is my favorite line. In the beginning it reminded me of Aladdin when Jasmine sneaks out of the castle and ends up in the market, meets Aladdin, and they have to make a run for it. I love the story. It kept me interested the whole time. And what can I say about that ending? I do enjoy cliffhangers but then I don’t at the same time. I cannot wait to see what comes next!

I received this as an arc E-copy and was very hopeful. I think the storyline has potential but found there to be a lot of plot holes which made it difficult to follow as well as get engaged. I did not find much depth to the characters and struggled to follow along with the varying POV’s in the story as it wasn’t always clear who was speaking.

I will not be continuing with the series but would recommend others give it a read and make their own decision.

I read this book in 24 hours I just couldn't put it down, I loved how the story pulled me in and the author's writing style was particularly enjoyable. It was hard to believe this was her debut novel it was so good!
The world building, the horrible Emperor and his warped feelings for his daughter, the hundreds of generations of a pure blood line family all wrapped up with battles, death, poison and love, the only thing you could need is book 2 !!

Born to Ruin by Helena Rein is a work of art. This book is not your typical Romantacy story filled with love, lust, and a bit of magic. Born to Ruin is a tale of a strong FMC (Aeternae) who refuses to succumb to a life of incestuous darkness with her emperor father, without being in your face with lust and spice.

Aeternae falls for her half brother Arete and together they figure out a way to end their father’s rule and rise to power all while cause a bit (an understatement) of chaos. Their relationship is taboo in the best way. Their love is slow, deep, and calculated keeping you kicking your feet in a fit of giggles.

Rein does a wonderful job of using the start difference of light and dark not only in the setting of the story, but also in her characters. The mothers in this story are perfect opposites in their love and rule. Their children living opposite lives in the same towers all while experiencing the same madness of their father. Dream sequences are used with a light hand, bringing the magic in this world to light without being over powering. The people of the forest are a group I would LOVE to learn more about, their mystery is intriguing and leaves me questioning in the best way.

The best part of this book is the ALMOST HEA, that leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next installment. I typically enjoy a spicier story with more world building and magic, but the subtleties of Reins writing pushes you into the story and makes it feel as though you are stepping into the characters lives, a fly on the wall. The passage of time is also perfectly done, the story takes place over roughly 60 days and does not feel rushed. Time jumps are delicately done and explained simply.

I truly cannot wait for book 2 to come out to learn about the other empires surrounding them.

Perfectly Paced Dark Fantasy

I absolutely love this book. I stayed up well past 3am to finish it. The pacing was perfect and the World building was entered in perfectly as to not slow the pace down or become an info dump. My favorite part is the prose and writing style followed by the characters themselves.

Aeternae was fierce. She was calculating. She is what happens when the pain builds and love never comes. She is no longer the victim, but the villain. She was everything I love in a FMC - strong and not laying down to take whatever comes.

Arete and his mother Niloufar's relationship truly touched me. Niloufar is the devoted mother we all are, for a son who is brave and just. Maybe not JUST in the way others find justice, but in those who are righteous and fight for TRUE justice.

Here are some of my favorite lines. I could not help, but to share them:

"The most lethal of beauty lies in the brightest hues."

"If she bought hemlock, she is an assassin. If she bought a dagger, she is a traitor. But if she asked for paints...she was just a grieving daughter. "

"She looked at her hands in the dim light of dawn, they didn't look like the hands capable of being a killer."

"I decided that it's better to create something - even imperfectly - than to leave nothing, but silence."

"...it painted her in the colors of life, even as it flirted with death."

"If her world was to be broken, she would be the one to break it."

"You are asking me to rule a kingdom of ash and ghosts alone."

"You can choose to be a living traitor or a dead man loyal to his Emperor."

Solid 5 stars and I literally cannot wait for the next book because that end....what?!

GAME OF THRONES FANS YOU NEED TO READ THIS!

dark fantasy + forbidden power + palace betrayal

A princess is forced to marry her father to protect the bloodline… but instead? she chooses treason and starts plotting his downfall from inside the palace 👀🗡️the deeper she goes, the darker it gets—secrets, sacrifice, and a rebellion that could burn entire empires to the ground 🔥

If you love Game of Thrones or Bridgerton, that’s the kind of vibe Born to Ruin is giving and I am here for it!

I usually don’t fully understand a lot of the old politics in books like these, but Helena Rein did a great job of keeping the story simple enough to not be confusing, yet still complex enough to keep me wondering what’s going to happen and how it will all turn out.

I love any book where we are rooting for a strong FMC! Aeternae goes through a journey of self-discovery as she rises up against her horrible father, who is the emperor. I loved seeing her bravery in standing up to someone so powerful and untouchable.

The scenes were also very well written, and I loved being able to picture everything unfolding in my head.

The only thing I wish there would’ve been more of is an emotional connection with the characters. From a third-person perspective, it’s a little harder to capture that since you’re not directly in the character’s head.

All in all, I really did enjoy this book and I’d recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy with political power struggles, a strong FMC, and no spice. I would also read the next one as this is going to be a series.

As someone who struggles with the whole “creating mental pictures” thing, I loved how the author opened the book with verbiage that connected to feelings and experiences that were relatable. It helped me enter in to the world so easily. The differences between our current reality and the world she wrote were so stark due to the matter-of-fact way she wrote about it as reality for her characters but definitely not something I would consider commonplace. It was jarring in a way I could help but want to dive into more.
While the writing sometimes felt a bit choppy at times, it was easy to be invested in the plot and the characters. There were times I wished there was more description of the inner thoughts and how they were manifested physically in the characters, but nothing was lost in the descriptions given.
Make sure you read the author’s note at the beginning because there are some elements that may not be your cup of tea. Don’t be one of those people who skip/ignore it and then complain about it being a part of the plot. Nobody likes that.

I want to start off by saying that this book is written in 3 person POV and that can be hard to follow sometimes, this also makes it harder to connect with the characters.
Quite a few chapter started off with a description of the setting then mentioned what character the focus was on.  I felt that this made it harder to read becuse you didn't know who you should be picturing until they're were mentioned. For example in chapter 27 Aternae's name was not mentioned until three pages in.
I feel like I connected more with Arete and there was more focus on him than the FMC Aternae. To me this was more of a story about siblings over coming their father than a woman alone. Arete truly did the heavy lifting and I saw more character development through him.
The setting was beautifully painted in every chapter, not a complete replica of ancient Egypt but definitely inspired and recreated in a new way.

I received a copy of Born to Ruin from Helena Rein and loved every minute of this book.  It ended up being a really captivating read. What stood out was Aeternae, the FMC, is strong, independent, and incredibly level-headed. Rather than reacting emotionally, she faces challenges with logic and isn’t afraid to make difficult decisions.

The story carries a darker tone with plenty of tension and depth. The character dynamics keep things engaging across every chapter. I especially appreciated how consistent Aeternae remained in her strength and mindset, even when faced with tough situations. Another aspect I really enjoyed was the slow-burn relationship between Aeternae and Arete. Their connection develops gradually, built on tension and trust rather than instant attraction.

Overall, this is a gripping, character-driven story that shines because of its resilient and strong FMC. I can't wait for the second book.

Let me say, im at a loss on how to feel after that cliffhanger of an ending.

The Emperor, Djosier VII, has lost his ever loving mind. Do the people notice? Yep. Are they gonna do anything? Well....

This book is GOT levels treachery okay!!!

The FMC, Aeternae, honestly I just wanted to give her a big ol hug.

The MMC, Arete, is rolling with the, I'll kill/die for you vibes.

The book begins with a boom. The princess must wed her father and bear him children, particularly a son. Why? Because The Emperor said so. As you can imagine, this doesn't settle well with everyone and plans are formed. Agreements of treason are made. Your stomach will be tight with anxiety as the pages turn and the climax approaches. And for all good books, you must have a good twist. 😉

Sign me up for book 2!

After reading this book it truly left me wanting to read book 2. I have become invested in the FMC. The FMC is very strong character as well. She didn’t want to just “follow suit” and follow tradition when it came to marriage. ESPECIALLY when that marriage was to be to yet her very own Emperor father. She wanted different as well as the MMC who just happened to be her half brother. The ending I truly wasn’t expecting which is part of the reason why I would read book 2. Plus being invested in the FMC and MMC. It isn’t HEA, definitely reminds me of Reign when it comes to politics of those times. I suggest others to read it for yourselves to the end of the book for your own thoughts and feelings on this book.

Overall, I gave this book 3 stars. The story itself was interesting and thoughtful, lots of imagery and overall themes of trials for the FMC. Action and excitement was present throughout the story, it was hard to predict what was going to happen next. I was not a fan of the lack of feeling or empathy from the FMC even though her situation and upbringing lent itself to that presentation. I also didn’t love the brother/sister romance plot.

Overall I’m interested to see what happens next to the characters as it did end on a cliff hanger.

Finally I think a trigger warning about infanticide needs to be added.

I just want to start off by saying the world building in this book is seriously insane (in a good way). This probably has the best world building out of any book that I’ve read. However, I do feel like because the world building was so intense it took away from a lot more plot and story. There were definitely a few major plot twists that I had to pause and go “did that just happen?” And had to keep reading to find out more. It is hard to follow the beginning. It jumps between three different characters POV, and you’re not warned at all. Eventually from knowing the characters you will pick up on who’s POV it is right away. I just feel like it needed more umph in the storyline.

I really enjoyed the storyline. The characters are very well written and easy to get invested in. The world building stood out to me and made everything feel vivid and engaging.

The taboo relationship tied to the time period and the idea of keeping blood “pure” was definitely a little cringe at times, but it did not take away from my overall enjoyment of the story. I finished the book in an afternoon because I kept wanting to see what happened next.

The cliffhanger ending completely caught me off guard. I was not expecting it at all and now I am very ready for book two.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ AMAZING!

This was my first time reading a dark political fantasy novel and wow I am impressed. The world building, plot and characters were fantastic. I was hooked from the very first chapter and found myself thinking about it during my normal day to day life, I couldn't wait to pick it back up and carry on reading!

The ending had me completely shocked & I am just itching to find out what happens in the sequel. This book was written really well, I'm so impressed and can't wait for the sequel!!

Thank you very much to the author, Helena Rein for sending me a copy of her book!

I truly enjoyed the writing style, it was different and there's lots of attention to detail in the storyline and characters. The world building and characters were well described, made you invested in them!

I had a great time reading this, I loved watching the fmc's journal, how she found courage and became brave from all she has gone through.

One other thing that I kinda really love, is the mysterious povs! I love the mysteriousness of it haha.

From the way it ended, I definitely need to read the next book as of yesterday ago!

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book! :)

I really liked this book—it’s a quick, engaging read that’s hard to put down. Some of the twists were pretty shocking, and the cliffhanger totally caught me off guard. Admittedly the relationships felt a bit uncomfortable, but since this book has an almost mythological vibe, they were easier to roll with. Can’t wait for the next book to see what happens!

All I can say is WOW!! I went in not fully knowing what to expect and wondering what I got myself into! But OMG this has to be one of the best books
I’ve read all year! It gave off all of the GOT vibes!!
Loved the strong FMC! There were very minor parts of being a little confused as which character was being followed, but not enough to affect the overall, the pacing was perfect, completely keeping my attention and never a dull ! The cliffhanger at the ending left me needing more.

The world building in this book is fantastic and is very much giving off Game of Thrones vibes with all of the political intrigue and treachery aplenty. I spent a couple of nights up until 3 am reading this because I couldn’t put it down, I needed to know what was going to happen next.
The book starts off with a bang when the Emperor announces to his council that he intends on getting married….. to his daughter of all people and that she must bear him children, specifically boys. Here is when the princess decides to matters into her own hands and the treachery begins and alliances are formed. The cliff hanger at the end leaves you wanting more!

It is a great read. Wonderful for a debut author. The details of each character pull you in. I was not sure i would enjoy it as I do not read a lot of political intrigue books however, you cannot help but want to push the characters into action yourself even as the author does it for you.
