Echelon Vanguard bought her. He refuses to let them keep her.
Thea When you’re five, and people ask what you want to be when you grow up, the answers are simple. Princess. Doctor. Astronaut. When you’re twenty-one—when you’re expected to know—the answer doesn’t come so easily. I drift through community college, unsure of my path, but everything changes when my father chooses money over my future. I’m sold to a secret society in Chicago, where they trade power as easily as people. Except there’s one man who doesn’t fit. Slade DuPont doesn’t speak, but he watches everything. Watches me. He isn’t cruel. He isn’t careless. And sometimes, it feels like he’s trapped here too. His fixation fractures into something deeper. Something dangerous. He may be the only one who can save me.
Slade My life’s been carved out for me since I was young. Narrowed down to a single path. Congress. Take up the DuPont mantle. I was meant to inherit a political future—one I fully intended to control. Instead, I step straight into Echelon Vanguard, a society built on the backs of the rich and powerful. Businessmen. Politicians. Former organized-crime figures. All bound by secrecy and leverage. My grandfather’s voice replaces my own, until I barely remember I ever had one. Until her. Thea Harmon disrupts every calculated move I’ve made to undermine him. My discipline turns into obsession, and when EV tightens its grip, loyalty becomes suffocation. She’s been sold into a world designed to break her. All I want is to save her.
Save Me is a fade-to-black secret society dark romance. It’s book one in the Echelon Vanguard series. This book contains darker thematic material. Please review the content warnings before reading. A full list of TW/CW is available on the author’s website.
This is a dark romance in a dark world. Not for the faint of heart, but such a good story! This feels like an episode of SVU from the inside POV: it pulls at your heart, people needing to be saved and people wanting to save them. You get a Capt!ve x Capt0r dynamic with a slow burn lust to love romance. The morally gray MMC is a darker Batman type, young politician. The FMC is a college student sold into this secret society. I love a good ‘he saves her’ kind of story a this delivered. That HEA was hard earned. KP Haven is an auto read author for me and I loved this book just as much as the others. This is probably her darkest I’ve read and it reminds me of the feels in Debt of My Soul (which I loved).

Save Me is a weighty, thought-provoking, emotionally intense, fade-to-black dark romance. It explores difficult realities surrounding human trafficking and secret societies, and it won’t be for everyone—but it completely pulled me in from the beginning. Definitely check content notes before going in; a full list of TW/CW is available on the author’s website. The author doesn’t shy away from harsh truths, shedding light on real-world darkness while handling these topics with care and intention—never feeling exploitative, just honest.
Slade was such an intriguing character—I couldn’t help but be drawn to him. His selective/intentional mutism was fascinating, as was the reason behind it. He’s instantly obsessed with Thea (a trope the author is very clear about), but what stood out to me is how that played out. He’s protective and possessive, but not pushy or controlling in the ways you might expect. He cares for her deeply and wants her to have the life she chooses.
Thea’s character was equally compelling. I loved how strong and determined she is. She brings light and a sense of normalcy to the lake house. Her compassion and selflessness stand out in such a dark world.
This is a story that will stay with me long after finishing. I found myself thinking about what it would be like to be in either of their positions—one bound by literal chains, the other by invisible ones. It’s deep, messy, and complex. As someone who has volunteered with survivors and taken time to learn more about human trafficking, I appreciated how authentically the author portrays what victims might endure and the different ways they cope. It isn’t glorified, but it also isn’t softened to make it easier to read.
It’s intense, gritty, and emotional—but it completely griped me from start to finish. The weight of this story doesn’t just disappear when you turn the last page. I’m really looking forward to seeing how everything unfolds in the rest of the series.

In the acknowledgments, K.P. Haven shares: “Human trafficking is not fiction for so many people in this world. It’s real, devastating, and ongoing…. If this story stirred discomfort, heartbreak, or anger in you, I hope it also stirred compassion.”
Unfortunately, human trafficking is a very real part of the world we live in—and it’s closer to home than most people realize. I’m grateful to be part of a church that is actively working to fight against trafficking, exploitation, and modern-day slavery. If this story stirred something in you, consider leaning into that—learn more, stay aware, and look for ways to make a difference.

I received a gifted ARC from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hard book to read but glad I did-I’ve enjoyed her other books as well.
I received an ARC of Save Me…
Check the trigger warnings as this book deals with human trafficking and sex will be a prominent theme. Though difficult it’s not explicit and not for the faint of heart.
Having worked with survivors I appreciate her approach to the various ways people cope with trauma and the guilt and shame they deal with trying to survive it. The appropriate response is to feel disgust and anger towards those who abuse other people.
I would suggest reading the book knowing the author’s heart, which I believe is to respectfully portray what victims experience, not as a way to exploit them, but so we can have compassion and not judgement for the various ways in which people learn to survive. She shared her reasons for writing this story at the end-I wish I’d read that first.
The redemption aspect goes both ways which I enjoyed.
The ending felt very abrupt but I think it’s kinda like a “cliff hanger light” in preparation for the next book. I wanted to bask in the healing part longer since the build up was so intense. There was some closure but not complete closure. The epilogue left me with more questions I hope will be answered in upcoming books!
My oh my.... what an enthralling story! I am a huge K.P. Haven fan and this story did not disappoint. I was intrigued on how this dark world was going to have any redeeming MMC's and I am pleasantly surprised. Slade is such a mystery and I instantly drawn into his story. Getting his POV while he was selectively mute was perfection. I love when a morally grey MMC gets drawn to the woman that will change his life.
Thea is such a fierce woman and what she goes through is nothing easy to endure. I loved her spirit and how gentle and caring she is. I loved how she is the one that gets to know the real Slade and that we get to see him open up with her.
There is so much darkness in this world. This world and story have so much depth. You won't want to come out for a breath until you've closed it. Even then, you'll need a few minutes to recover. I can't wait to continue this series and see the other morally grey men find their women.
Yeah absolutely not.. not only is it super dark, but also extremely problematic in so many ways. The main characters had no chemistry and the plot didn’t really go anywhere.
Save Me is a dark novel about some of the darkest parts of society. At its center is a love story about two people- both caught up in a world they never wanted to be a part of. I really appreciate how even though KP writes about some dark circumstances, there are always moments of hope and goodness.
There are many parts of this book that are brutal and heart-breaking (check your TW people), but I really appreciate that we have a love story at the center of this story to remind us there is always hope to be found amongst the darkness. Slade and Thea are both broken and forced into the circle of EV. They're both balancing trying to do good and trying to survive in a dark world. Slade is so protective over Thea and, although she resented it at times, I found it so endearingly sweet. He protected her from as much pain (both physical and mental) and who doesn't love a protective MMC? Their romance was a slow burn but I always find that I enjoy romances that build from genuine connection much more so I really enjoyed it.
Also just wanted to note that I was really impressed with the way trauma was handled in this book. Each character deals with the horrible things they've been through in different ways, which is so true to real life. Often, people who are victims don't always act in a way we think victims should or would. I think Juliet is a perfect example of that and I loved to see that represented here.
Thank you to the author for my gifted copy. All thoughts are my own.
Spice: fade to black TW: human trafficking, assault, violence, gore
Anything K.P Haven writes, I'll read! She is definitely a go to author lately and I have been anticipating the start of this series for so long now, and I was so excited to get my hands on an ARC!
Save Me, the first book in the Echelon Vanguard series, delves into the dark underbelly of secret societies, human trafficking, and the corrupting influence of wealth. It follows Slade, a member of the society and politician, who is tasked with serving Echelon Vanguard. However, he soon realizes he’s a mere pawn and decides to infiltrate the society to destroy it.
Meanwhile, Thea, a community college student with no clear life plan, is sold and trafficked into the Echelon Vanguard society by her father for money. Slade’s plan of destruction is thwarted when Thea becomes entangled in his life and instantly falls in love with her. Torn between his desire to dismantle the society and his need to protect Thea from harm, Slade and Thea embark on a journey together to destroy the society and rescue other women who have been sold.
Slade’s character is captivating. Despite his jaded and cynical outlook on life, he possesses a heart of gold and a deep sense of protectiveness. His actions and motivations are revealed throughout the story, making him even more likable. Additionally, his instant attraction to Thea and his unwavering commitment to her make their connection feel genuine and destined.
Thea’s character is equally remarkable. Having endured numerous hardships and setbacks, including being sold by her father, she remains determined to break free from her circumstances. Her resilience and unwavering hope serve as an inspiration to readers. Moreover, her selfless nature and willingness to prioritize others’ well-being make her a truly admirable character. Slade provides her with a sense of belonging and a chance to be valued for who she is, offering her a rare opportunity to find love and happiness. I’m always captivated by this author’s work because her stories are incredibly plot-driven, and I absolutely love that! It’s evident that she invests a significant amount of time and meticulous details into her narratives, and I’m thoroughly engrossed by the thrilling and captivating plot of the book. It held my attention, and I can’t wait for the next installment, even though it’s not yet out. I found the ending a bit abrupt, and I had hoped for more, as it felt like a cliffhanger. However, I’m hopeful that it’s in preparation for the next book, allowing us to delve deeper into the lives of Slade and Thea. Overall, this was an exceptional beginning to the new series, and I’m already eager to discover the subject of the next book. Additionally, other characters introduced in this book have piqued my interest, and I can’t help but wonder if Kenji is one of them (hint, hint!).
Wow… this book absolutely wrecked me in the best way.
Save Me by K.P Haven is one of those stories that pulls you in quietly and then refuses to let go. From the very first pages I felt this heavy sense of tension and unease, and it only deepened the more I got to know Thea and Slade. This isn’t just a romance, it’s a story about control, survival, and what it means to hold onto yourself when everything is being taken from you.
Thea completely broke my heart. Her confusion about her future felt so real at the start, and then watching her world get ripped out from under her was devastating. You feel her fear, her strength, and that quiet resilience that refuses to disappear even when she’s trapped in something so dark and twisted. I found myself rooting for her the entire time.
And Slade… he is such a unique and powerful character. The fact that he doesn’t speak makes every single action feel louder, more intentional, and honestly more emotional. The way he watches, protects, and slowly unravels because of Thea had me completely hooked. His obsession isn’t chaotic or reckless, it’s controlled, simmering, and somehow even more intense because of it.
Their connection builds in such a gripping way. It’s not instant, it’s not easy, and it definitely isn’t safe. There’s this constant push and pull between danger and comfort that kept me on edge the entire time. Even with the fade to black romance, the emotional intensity is off the charts. You feel everything between them without needing explicit scenes, which honestly made it hit even harder.
The secret society element was dark, unsettling, and incredibly well done. It added this layer of power, corruption, and manipulation that made the stakes feel so high. You can feel how suffocating that world is, and it makes every small moment of connection between Thea and Slade feel that much more meaningful.
This book is heavy, emotional, and addictive in a way that sneaks up on you. It’s the kind of story that lingers after you finish, and I already know I’m going to be thinking about these characters for a long time.
If you love dark romance with emotional depth, quiet obsession, and a storyline that keeps you completely locked in, this one is absolutely worth it.
Wow, what a story! Where do I even begin? First and foremost, please keep in mind that this one is not going to be for everyone. While it IS closed-door/fade to black, it deals with some darker themes and topics like human trafficking and secret societies. These topics are handled well, and it doesn't glorify the darkness, but it doesn't shy away from those realities either. As such, I definitely recommend reading the author's note to decide if this one is for you. It's gritty, it's dark, it's messy, and yes, at times it was a little hard to read due to the subject matter... but my goodness, I absolutely loved this story just the same. I'm a sucker for a protective MMC, and the way that Slade is drawn to protect Thea? Call it obsession, maybe, but I was here for it. These characters are both so complex, and I think this was especially true for Slade. As someone who actually has a selective/situational mutism diagnosis, I was excited to see how that aspect of Slade's character would play out. While his might look different than my own (which IS mentioned in the author's note), I still really loved that this was part of his story and thought it added such a unique dynamic. Truly, there was just so much to love about this one. Yes, their story has a lot of darkness and heartbreak, but it doesn't let you stay fully in the darkness. Despite it all, there is still that sense of goodness and hope... I won't give anything way, but I'm most certainly looking forward to what will happen next in this series. I've enjoyed every book that I've read from K.P. Haven, but this one might just be a new favorite.
Save Me is a fade to black romance with innuendo and some language (mild/moderate) throughout. While nothing explicit happens on the pages, it may be a bit steamier and does deal with some themes that some closed-door readers will not be comfortable with.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.
Save Me is the first book in the Echelon Vanguard Series.
I knew I was stepping into the world of a dark romance with Save Me. I have read many dark romances, so I knew the path I was heading down, or I thought I knew..
I met Slade. I met Thea. I met the Echelon leaders, and then my world fell apart. I consumed every word with my heart racing and I just could not read fast enough. The emotion I felt wrecked me. We needed a hero and fast.
Slade has plans and they do not include love. He offers protection but not his heart. But everything in EV comes at a price. What is he willing to sacrifice? How far will he go? The stakes are high.
Thea is blindsided by a world she never knew existed. Will she find a way to bloom in a world she doesn't belong in? Will she lose herself trying to survive?
I loved Slade and Thea. I could feel the fear, pain, and agony in my heart as I read their heart-wrenching story. I loved the side characters who stood by Slade and I hated all those against him.
This romance is not for the faint of heart, so fair warning, but if you love a romance where the hero is everything a hero should be, then you will love Save Me. Carve out some time in your schedule because once you start reading, you will not want to stop.
There are so many moments within this story where my breath caught in my throat. At times, I didn't want to read the next words for fear of the direction they would take my favorite characters. In the end, I finished Save Me with a sigh and a happy heart.
Thank you to K.P. Haven for the ARC, Save Me. Fabulous. Just Fabulous. All opinions are my own.
Be sure to read the trigger warnings as this dark romance will not be for everyone.
I am a fantasy reader but every once in a while a book from another genre just blows my mind, captures me and reminds me I need to branch out more. I will be reading her backlist this year on KU. I did read Broken Blood Ties and loved it too.
A 5 star book I could not put down and l’m looking forward to reading the series. I got an early read from the author because Emerald Frost Design made the book trailer! Go look! It’s incredible and in my stories.
I love her writing and the way she told this story. It’s a dark gritty world in the underworld of politics and our MMC is the silent vigilante. He is one of the best characters I have read not in fantasy. It’s a close door romance but doesn’t not lack in the tension in anyway. If anything the tension and trauma drives this story and made me not able to put my kindle down. I applaud an author who doesn’t use explicit spice to create the lust and tension. (I love spice btw, don’t come at me) But there is something truly awesome when it’s not used and the characters and story stands on its own without it. This the first book of the series and with that ending I can’t wait for book 2.
I was so emotional reading the trauma, ripped my heart open and made me cry. It’s hits hard on what is happening in our world, human trafficking is the worst sin of on humanity.
Character development was perfect and believable. If I say more I’ll spoil it! But Holy Batman I loved it 😉 The high stakes of his life and obsession he experienced with her just made an excellent reading experience for me.
(4.5 stars). I'm stunned again by K.P. Haven. Save Me was intense, gritty, and emotionally gripping. I read an ARC of this book, first in a new series about a secret society. It's a slow burn, steamy fade-to-black, dark romance. The mystery, tension, and suspense reminded me of the whirlwind experience of reading Haven's Debt of My Soul. There are darker, heavy themes in Save Me, so check the trigger/content warnings first to ensure that you're comfortable diving in.
Save Me is heartbreaking because kidnapping, sex trafficking and abuse are very real evils. Yet, these things are not often heard about beyond a few big news alerts. That's what made this story so uncomfortable at times. It is evident that the author wrote this book with careful consideration, respectfully portraying the issues without minimising the harsh impact or dire consequences for real victims.
It felt heart-wrenching when Thea's freedom was ripped away from her because she could be anyone in my life. I didn't always agree with her choices, but I loved that Thea refused to give in or let her situation define who she was. She held on tightly and didn't shatter.
Slade is a complex MMC. My heart ached for him as well. His obsession made me unsure of what to feel about his connection with Thea. Not to mention their circumstances were ill-suited for romance. Yet, I was surprised when they found beauty in tragedy and light in the darkness. I was rooting for them despite the glaring truth that their love was reckless.
I liked the references to a certain hero, a favourite of mine since childhood. A few characters left me very intrigued, so I'm excited for what's next in the series. Thank you to K.P. Haven for the ARC.
Just a heads up… if you read a K.P. Haven book you will be up until 2 am finishing it 😅 First things first though, make sure you read the content warnings on the author’s website before reading this book! It is a dark, fade to black romance but contains very dark themes. Thea is sold into a secret society operating in the underbelly of Chicago run by affluent men in positions of power. Slade is a congressman who wants to help his community but is brought into the society by his grandfather. Slade is working to save Thea but will he be able to make it in time?
This book is very intense and gripping. I found myself not being able to put it down because I had to see what would happen but at the same time found some parts hard to read. Slade is the definition of protective MMC and I loved how fast paced it is. Technically, this is the first book in The Echelon Vanguard series and can be read as a standalone but if you have never read a KP Haven book, I’d personally recommend starting with Heritage of Blood. You learn more information about Echelon Vanguard before diving into this one. Can’t wait to read the next book and also dive into K.P. Haven’s entire backlist 😅
📖Living with her alcoholic abusive father, Thea is just trying to get by in life. Everything changes for Thea when strange men in tailored suits come barging into her home and kidnap her.
📚What you can expect: • Dark romance • Modern day Chicago setting • Batman references and similarities • He falls first • 1st in an interconnected series
⚠️language / physical and emotional abuse 🌶️fade to black
💖First of all, I love anything that KP Haven writes! She is gifted with making relatable characters that have flaws but get a redemptive story. This book is the darkest of those I've read by her, and I took me a few chapters to get into the story, but once I was through the setup I couldn't put this down. None of the poor or evil behavior conducted in this story is condoned and I loved how Batman was a theme throughout. There was definitely a "Gotham"-ish style to this story. The romance is messy in the best way and of course the ending is redemptive.
😣This isn't my favorite of Haven's books, since it is quite dark at times, but I'll still read anything she writes.
*I was lucky enough to read this story early, but YOU can get your hands on it April 7th*
I want to start off by saying, this book is not for everyone! It deals with heavy topics, and I encourage you all to check out Haven’s website for a list of trigger/content warnings. Personally, I don’t have much that “triggers” me, but this was a more difficult read.
I enjoy how Haven approaches tough subjects, and while she acknowledges these things happen by writing about them, she never glorifies any of it. She writes these intense subjects quite tastefully, and it never ceases to draw me in.
Where I struggled with this book was the instant obsession from Slade toward Thea. I struggled to feel any chemistry between them. Usually, in Haven’s novels, the chemistry between the MMC & FMC are palpable and raw. In this case, the connection was mainly from Slade’s side. I didn’t read the growth and flourishing of the relationship on paper. It all still felt very surface.
Nevertheless, this book could be for you! It is fade-to-black, and it’s the first in a series!
I really enjoyed Save Me by K.P. Haven—this was such an emotional, gripping read. I especially appreciated how thoughtfully and sensitively the heavier elements of the story were handled. It was heartbreaking at times, but also very eye-opening.
Slade and Thea’s relationship was my favorite part. I loved seeing Slade’s instinct to protect kick in once he understood what was really going on, not just with Thea but with everything around him. The way he showed up for her, earned her trust, and became a safe place for her felt really meaningful. Their connection grew in a way that felt natural, and I loved how much care and intention was behind it.
There were a few slower moments in the middle where the pacing dipped slightly, and the ending left me a little wanting more closure, but it definitely has me curious about what’s next.
Overall, I still loved this book and will absolutely continue reading K.P. Haven’s work. I’m already excited for the next one!! 🫶🏻
A dark romance you can comfortably uncomfortably read
First sign this was going to be amazing? The freaking map! I don't know why that gets readers going but it just does. In a contemporary dark romance no less...mama 🤤
First line hooks you (I legit laughed out loud for a min at that first line. Quite unexpected 😆), the rest of the pages drowns you and you finish breathing hard and wanting more. This book was dark..but not too dark that it's uncomfortable to read as closed door reader. The author didn't shy away from dark themes and such and delivers them with taste. NGL I was hoping for a bit more obsession as advertised...BUT I also recognize the context of their relationship and that would have been incredibly difficult to pull off. I think she came as close to the line as she could without scaring people off. I respect that. This is dark romance you can comfortably uncomfortably read. She nails the dark, the heat 🔥🔥🔥, the tension, the horror. Great read ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I went into Save Me expecting tension… but what I got? Obsession, power plays, and a romance that feels like walking a tightrope in heels.
This book is slick, dangerous, and a little bit addictive.
The chemistry? Immediate. Intense. The kind that makes you pause mid-page and go “oh… we’re in trouble.” Every interaction feels loaded like one wrong move could spark chaos, and honestly… I lived for it.
The power dynamics in this story are EVERYTHING. It’s not just romance, it’s strategy. It’s control. It’s two people circling each other like they both know love might be the most dangerous move on the board.
And let’s talk about the vibe for a second: dark suits, city lights, secrets tucked behind every smile… this book reads like a slow burn wrapped in ambition and temptation.
Such a good book. Such a good set up for an entire series!
This story dives into some of my worst fears. Powerless to the powerful. Money and greed and seeing people as things rather than human beings. Being bought, sold used, discarded, disposed of. *deep breath. Human Trafficking has always been a problem so close to my heart. People suffer. People break. People don't make it out. I feel like this story was written in a way that highlights the realities. walks us throuah the trauma without getting too deep and offers a realistic ending to the problems caused by evil people. While leaving it open for more of the story to unfold as the series continues. This is still a love story with a happily ever after
This was my very first secret society read. Watched plenty of movies but never read a book with one. Haven delivered! Once I got into it, I found it hard to put down. Slade was probably my favorite part. His protectiveness over Thea was swoony. I found his selective muteness interesting giving him a quiet but dangerous vibe. It was unique and added more depth to the story. I loved seeing his hidden side! Thea, poor Thea. I felt for her during the entire book. She had a rough life early on and the way she ends up in the middle of this secret society is heartbreaking. I also really appreciate that all of Haven’s books are fade to black. You still get all the tension and the build up. Thanks so much to the author for allowing me an arc!
Thank you to K.P. Haven for the ARC. All opinions excited are my own.
This book was profound, eye opening and yet heartbreaking.
After reading this, im stuck with the reality that fiction often mimics real life. K.P Haven did a great job of it in this book. In her own words, "If this story stirred discomfort, heartbreak, or anger in you, I hope it also stirred compassion." And wow, did it stir all the emotions in me.
Save Me hits the horrifying realities of human trafficking and leaves you asking, what can I do? It may be fiction, but we see the reality of it. However, there are small doses of justice woven throughout, offering a glimmer of hope in an otherwise heavy and painful world.
Despite the darker themes, we also get a romance between Thea and Slade. One that starts with obsession, slowly morphs into a love that is worth protecting and fighting for.
I will admit some parts were hard to read. But they are necessary to fully understand what our MCs are going through.
This book had me hooked from the first page. The potent examples of good vs evil, a hero who doesn't know who he is, and realizes he must become the thing he hates most to destroy the evil that is around them.
If you are sensitive to darker themes, then this one may not be for you. However I recommend to those that are okay with reading these heavy topics.
TW/CW: Kidnapping, torture, death and violence. Mentions of abuse on Women, and SA, off page.
I feel a little bit like I need therapy after reading this.
KP Haven writes really excellently. She navigates horrors well without giving too much detail but just enough to make you rethink ever leaving your house again.
This is not a romance, not in the traditional sense. I stayed because I wanted to see EV taken down. That didn’t happen in this first installment, I would actually say that EV won this round. Slade and Thea willingly drove themselves deeper into the abuse and corruption of the society and I don’t think I can forgive them for running in the opposite direction of their happily ever after. Haven tried to give us a future peek of happiness but I’m just not buying it.
This story covers a lot of difficult themes, but none of them are glorified in any way. Readers should definitely check the content warnings on the author’s website. Slade is thrown into this secret society that preys on young women, and he’s biding his time to try to bring it down. He’s selectively mute as he comes to learn how his words have power and are twisted against his will. Thea is sold to this society and he’s immediately drawn to her. I thought her inner strength among the chaos she’s thrown into was something to admire. I didn’t know how this story was going to go, and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I wouldn’t say the ending completely satisfied me—there are some loose ends still— but I know I’ll get more answers in the rest of the books that are coming. I’m really looking forward to watching the takedown of this secret society! Overall, a tough read in terms of content, but I still loved how the story was written.
Thea is kidnapped and trafficked by a secret society. Her only chance at survival is Slade. Although part of the society, Slade does not agree with their practices and wants to take down Echelon Vanguard from within.
Save Me is well-written, but it's difficult to read. There are many trigger warnings, so check them before picking up this book. I love the redemption arc and character growth throughout the story, but I can't fully support all of the characters' choices. Thea's and Slade's decisions are questionable at best. It's definitely a nail-biter, and I kept moving at a fairly quick pace to see what would happen next. However, I wavered in my opinion of this book, and I'm still not quite sure where I stand. I think I need to see the series develop further, so I’m giving it 4 stars for now and holding off on my final judgment.
This was such an amazing read 😍 I love how there’s just enough background for the characters before everything was about to change and how detailed the insight is to their thoughts while everything is going on! I also loved how it’s fade to black and a slow burn it really gives enough story while still giving the relationship between the FMC and MMC 😍 I really do love the story in general these are real topics!
This was not my favorite KP Haven book. I’m not going to lie, it was DARK. I know that the end credits even mentioned that it was already written before recent events but I just kept thinking bout them & it was harder than usual to read this one. I didn’t really feel the connection between Slade & Thea. It was kind of Stockholm Syndrome-ish but then I got it at the same time of why.
I think it was a great read & KP did an amazing job with how she wrote such an important current event. She handled it perfectly imo. I can’t wait for the next book in this series, I hope it’s a little less dark but overall I still really enjoyed it & will continue the series. Please check the trigger warnings though!!!
This series is going to be so good, and this book perfectly set it all up. I’m interested to see how everything plays out and what characters come back up throughout the series. I have a feeling things will get a lot darker, so I would definitely suggest reading the trigger warnings.
slow burn • secret society • instant obsession • touch her & die • fade to black
There was a time when I read open door dark romance books. When I switched to closed door and fade to black stories I seemed to be frequently disappointed with the story having too much fluff. It make it feel like they didn't take the subject matter as seriously as they should. It never felt like they were actually talking about the dark things that were going on, the lasting trauma, or the varying responses to it. It was all for the characters perfect redemption arch and quickly glazed over to make the character more dramatic. Save Me it's not that way! The scenes that were pertrayed were hard hitting on your emotions and made you so invested in the characters. There was a true struggle with the choices that had to be made and things weren't always perfectly fixed. I was so impressed with all the morally grey characters and how I felt so conflicted about them. I highly recommend this book but do not go into it expecting it to be a light read. It is labeled as a dark romance for a reason and the warning at the beginning of the book should be taken very seriously.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.*
I remembered while reading this that I'd read this author before and she kind of pushes the envelope of "clean fiction." There is mild language throughout, and while technically closed door, I would consider it a steamy closed door. The writing was good but it definitely toes the line of "clean."
