I ran from a man who almost destroyed me. Now I’m falling for one who makes me feel alive again.
Axel Slade was supposed to be just another customer at my café. Flashing me that famous smile I know has broken plenty of hearts in this town. Just a little harmless flirting over morning coffee.
Until he starts showing up every day. Helping without being asked. Watching me like he sees past my exhaustion and straight into my soul. Touching me like he already knows exactly how I’ll come undone.
I don’t fall for men. I escape them.
Since escaping my life back in Oregon, my focus is keeping my daughter safe. I don’t have room for temptation—especially not the kind that looks like Axel Slade.
He doesn’t charm me. He wrecks me. With his hands. With his mouth. With the way he tears down my walls one by one…
But just when I start believing in second chances, my past comes roaring back. Axel says he’ll fight for me… For us. But falling in love again could cost me so much more than just a broken heart.
This time, I’m risking my baby girl.
I have to decide if I’m brave enough to stop running. Or if some sparks are too dangerous to survive.
Alexis Winter is a contemporary romance author who loves to share her steamy stories with the world. She specializes in sexy billionaires, cocky alphas, brooding bad boys and the women they love.
If you love to curl up with a good romance book you will certainly enjoy her work. Whether it's a story about an innocent young woman learning about the world or a sassy and fierce heroine who knows what she wants you're sure to enjoy the happily ever afters she provides.
When Alexis isn't writing away furiously, you can find her exploring the Rocky Mountains, traveling, enjoying a glass of wine or petting a cat.
Intriguing steamy romance – 3.75 stars Loved the premise of this story and because of that alone I should have loved the book, but it did not capture my interest. I did however enjoy it, but it took me longer to read. There was romance, intrigue, a nasty Ex and a first love for a normally almost-irresponsible Slade: Axel, who has spent most of his life being the jokester, casual-lover-type until now. Axel notices that Sadie the owner of Pike’s Perk coffee shop is always tense, overly cautious and quick-tempered. As the jokester, he tries to calm her down with humor, but his value comes when he realizes what is making her so tense. Her Ex is threatening her. When Axel discovers the full truth, he goes into Slade-protective mode. Oh. My. Word. If you have read any of the other books where the Slade family are involved, you know what that truly means. Unfortunately, there were several inconsistencies and unlike most of Ms. Winter’s leading ladies, Sadie is so naïve she borders on stupid; she ignores a court summons hoping the situation goes away. What?! Can Axel help Sadie keep her baby Poppy from her Ex? Can he keep Sadie safe? Can Sadie love Axel like he loves her? Through much turmoil you will get the answers if you read this book. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Booksprout.
This is the sixth book in the Slade Brothers Second Generation series and is Axel’s story. It can definitely be read as a standalone though.
𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑵𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔: Axel Slade & Sadie + Poppy 𝑺𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈: Colorado
Axel falls for Sadie almost immediately. He is captivated by the coffee shop owner and is determined to make her his. Eventually he convinces Sadie to go out with him. But Sadie is a bit standoffish because she is holding quite a big secret. She is afraid of getting close to anyone and afraid of her secret getting out. She wants to protect her daughter Poppy at all costs.
I think there was a bigger emphasis on the side story as opposed to their love story. Once Sadie gave him a chance it was a pretty smooth road for them. Sadie’s past played a bigger part in the story, but it did keep me interested.
That Sparkby Alexis Winter is book 6 inThe Slade Brothers Second Generationseries. In this book we follow the story of Axel Slade; son of Hudson and Deven Slade and one of the three triplets of which includes Adrienne Slade from book 5That Moment. And the FMCSadie Calloway through their dual POVs in this Single Mom, Slow Burn, He Falls First, Small Town Romance.
The take on Sadie and Axel’s story took on was an interesting one, something I definitely didn’t see coming given the very small dark side of the plot. Especially with what it resulted in when eventually everything was laid out with revelations coming to light from all the answers divulged. It was what gave the overall story a pick me up, knowing there was more to the story than meets the eye from that particularly subplot, while paving way for character building for Sadie, seeing as not much was known about her given the mysteriousness of her character.
But with that said, IMO the development behind her character wasn’t always set out as well as it could’ve been. For a good portion everything was alluded too, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. But when it came time the reveal, everything seemed to be thrown together quite quickly with how fast all was said and done. Making it one of the reasons that took me awhile to get into the story.
As for Axel, following his character and the journey he tread upon made the read more enjoyable to me. It definitely runs in the Slade family, he was sweet, cute and such a Cinnamon Roll Hero, the way he was there for Sadie in whatever capacity he could be, from trying his best in all the support he gave. Even if that meant taking the time by going at Sadie’s pace when it came to forming their relationship, which proved so too.
From how often the story had me to stop and step away throughout, it caused me to have a hard time connecting with the story. The first 20% just seemed to be too long winded for my liking with so many words and IMO no real progress or movement to show for it. In all honesty, the words felt like words, eliciting no reaction whatsoever for me despite what was going on. Even in the moments between Sadie and Axel that was suppose to be creating and establishing a relationship between the two it seemed non-existent with no movement or progression, as if at a standstill for quite some time to me. Even with it being a Slow Burn. One thing that had me a little confused was the timeline of where this book fit into the others from the series, since some of the others HEA didn't seem to exist by the end ofThat Spark,at least with what it had me gathering from it all.
All in all, whileThat Sparkwas a decent read, though mostly due to Axel and following his story's journey, who made it worth the read. In the end, this book just wasn’t my cup of tea with unfortunately being my least favourite fromThe Slade Brothers Second Generationseries.
*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Oh Axel Slade... How hard the flirty has fallen...
That Spark is the 6th book in the Second Generation Slades by Alexis Winter and I was sooo excited for Axel. I loved his teasing and flirty personality and just couldn't wait for what Alexis thought up for him. And honestly, I'm a little torn on my feelings.
3.5 ⭐
So right out the gate, I was intrigued by the idea of this book. Sadie Calloway is a single mom and coffee shop owner that is a bit on the guarded and uptight side- which as you get bits and pieces of her story, her walls and demeanor are totally understandable. Then enters Axel Slade- and the sparks are instant for both of these characters. Axel has boosted his caffeine intake just to get fleeting little moments with Sadie while she tries to ignore the pull she has towards him.
Swoony, right? And speaking of swoony... Axel is literally out there like all those other Slade men just dropping all the right words- knowing the most perfect thing to say that softens Sadie (and her protective big sister) towards him. I had some heart flutters at some of that book boyfriend perfection coming out of his mouth and the gentle care he demonstrated- when even by his own admission, was just not something that has really been in his character.
BUT something totally lost me in the story. I had trouble making sense of the complete flip of Sadie being this hypervigilant basically paranoid character because of the idea of the threat of her ex coming to find her and her daughter- to the extent that she was not entertaining the idea of really any kind of relationship, romantic or otherwise- to basically throwing all caution out the window when it felt like there was actually MORE to be cautious about. And for as much as I was adoring Axel through this story- he makes one decision that made me completely crazy. Sure he rationalizes his actions and so do other characters later on so that it doesn't seem like such a selfish or dictating move, but really even without Sadie fully disclosing everything she was dealing with- he knew and could understand enough that I was essentially in shock by the audacity.
Maybe I read it and was judging a little too harshly but my brain just malfunctioned with some of those details in the story. What it didn't malfunction with? Well, the ✨sparks✨ if you will. I had no doubt that Alexis would deliver the heat when it comes to her characters. And she of course delivers chapters of intense build up, delicious heat and just a little something more when it comes to the physical and emotional connections between Axel and Sadie.
So while I personally struggled a little with this story there are still many more single Slades out there and I will happily go along as each of them finds their matches!
Love is Partnership not Control - Sadie had been living a life scared of any noise and her shadow, ever since she escaped her ex-husband, so even though she felt a pull towards Axel, she was hesitant about getting close to him. Axel was enamoured with Sadie from the moment he laid eyes on her, but he realised she was running scared, so he took the opportunity to build trust between them, so she could open up to him about her fears. Once Sadie was confident in Axel’s sincerity, she made him aware of her situation and was happy he didn’t offer to take over or make suggestions.
Unfortunately, just as Sadie finally let her guard down and accepted Axel’s pursuit, he made a decision that caused conflict between them. Nevertheless, Axel wasn’t going to let Sadie deal with the situation she was in, so he did everything possible to help her and gave her the option of accepting his help, instead of him making decisions for her. Luckily, Axel and Sadie handled the situation together, she realised his patience towards her had helped her believe in love and build her trust in people again.
Taking into account all the pain Sadie had suffered in the past, she never expected she would get a chance to have a future with Axel or the happy family life they both deserved. This was a fantastic and well written story, with great main and supportive characters, as well as the interesting twist, that came together beautifully to make this a captivating read. You will definitely enjoy reading this book just as much as I did. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Escaping from an abusive ex-husband in Oregon, Sadie has taken her young daughter & moved to Virginia Dale, Colorado, started a small business & has been keeping to herself. Axel Slade has the reputation of being very popular with the women. Sadie’s world is her daughter, Poppy, & her own business. She’s not interested in being involved with Axel; no time for a relationship. This does not deter Axel as he really likes her but he’s acutely aware someone or something from her past is threatening her peace-of-mind. He’s intrigued & is determined to find out her story. Who’s threatening her, stalking her & keeping her stressed out 24/7?
He’s never felt this way towards any women he’s dated but with Sadie, there’s a shift with his feelings towards her, wanting to protect her & Poppy. Once Sadie reveals her secret & doesn’t know what to do, Axel does everything he can lawfully do to stop these threats. She deserves a new life, freedom & falling in love. He’s patient, gains her trust & he’s ready to settle down with her. In Slade tradition, Axel’s family members have welcomed both Sadie & Poppy. Such a large family & to be so loved and protected is very special indeed.

Another fabulous love story. I think this is my favourite Slade 2nd generation yet. Sadie has settled in a new life, a new town and a new business that is doing well. This single Mum seems to have every in hand but is reluctant to let anyone really get to know her. Axel has become intrigued by the feisty but focused coffee shop owner and is determined to get to know her better. He wears her down and as he gets to know Sadie and her daughter better, determines to make them his. Sadie is however hiding a secret that may well destroy not only her life but anyone who is involved with her. The secrets she thought she has escaped catch up with her and put everyone around her in danger. Axel is not running though, this gentle and patient man is determined to stick by Sadie no matter what. This story has some unexpected twists but through it all Axel is the rock Sadie needs to finally escape her past. Such a lovely read and the Slade family feature throughout both 1st and 2nd generation taking us down memory lane at times.
Small town, billionaire family romance, That Spark is the story of Axel Slade and Sadie Calloway.
Axel Slade is the overly protective, cinnamon roll hero that gives off the touch her and die vibes that I love so much in my book boyfriends.
Sadie Calloway is an emotionally guarded single mom, who doesn't give herself enough credit, whose stronger then she thinks and will do what is needed for her loved ones.
The slow burn, angst and chemistry between these two is so good and when you finally get to the "action" it's definitely worth the wait. Axel is very much a dirty talker in the bedroom, and Sadie definitely takes you by surprise by being open to what she likes and wants.
Sadie is running from her "ex" husband as he is a total douche, he finds her, threatens her with getting custody of their daughter, but then you have Axel who promises to keep them safe and won't let anything or anyone hurt them anymore.
Kudos Alexis to another great read, you surely never disappoint.

That Spark is the 6th book in the Slade Brothers: second generation series. It features Sadie and Axel. Sadie has settled in a new life after escaping her ex husband. She owns a coffee shop in town and is doing well. But Sadie is living a life where she's afraid of everything including her own shadow. Axel falls for her straight away and realises she is running scared of something, but he wants to get to know her better by building her trust. Sadie is hiding a secret that catches up to her putting her daughter and herself in danger. Axel and Sadie handle the situation together, which helps her realise that she can trust people and realise how much she loves Axel.
This was a fantastic story, it was well written and has great characters. I enjoyed the twists in this story. I loved Axel, he was so sweet, gentle, patient and protective towards Sadie and her daughter. Can't wait for the next book in the series.
I loved the feel good ending and the compassion without pushing that Axel showed to Sadie.
Sadie was hiding from her estranged husband and being taken to court for custody, when Slade brewery owner Axel takes an interest in her.
The relationship was certainly slow build but the situation had to warm slowly too because of the past trauma. But Axel understood and "saw her" and that was so special.
I loved the addition of Poppy and Sadie's sister Rowan as all as the whole Slade family. That support and team spirit I love.
Suspense, drama, emotions and wonderful outcomes made this a must read. Beautifully written and a fabulous plot held be capture the entire duration of reading. Such a delight!.

Alex is a little of a free spirit. He is the youngest brother and has never taken things too seriously. All of a sudden he is following a different routine. When he sees the new owner of the coffee shop he was smitten. He can’t stop thinking about her. He needs to see her every day - to just be there. He definitely feels a spark. This woman has him tied up in knots. Sadie has a lot of responsibility - the coffee shop, Poppy and her workers. She doesn’t have time to think about her needs. Alex is just going to be patient with Sadie. He sees Sadie and he is going to help her and that will give him Sadie. Does Sadie feel the same spark? He believes love will prevail! Will it? Will patience and love win out in the end?.

Another amazing read featuring another Slade! This time it’s Axel Slade that sheds his fun/good time guy persona for the right woman! I loved his calm, quiet persistence with Sadie. The way he felt about and treated Poppy seriously had my heart melting! Sadie was great, even when she was being brusque and trying to not fall for Axel *good luck*. I was not a fan of when I felt she overreacted to Axel wanting to temporarily keep something from her to let her enjoy herself. I understand, to a degree, if she were initially hurt, but she took it too far. I was very happy with how everything worked out! BUT…now I can’t wait to find out what the deal is between Aiden and Rowan!!!!! Those two left me fanning myself and I WANT MORE!!!!!.

That Spark is a warm and engaging addition to The Slade Brothers: The Second Generation series. The story beautifully captures the charm of small-town life while exploring themes of love, second chances, and family.
The single mom heroine is strong and relatable, and her journey adds emotional depth to the story. The chemistry between the characters grows naturally, creating heartfelt moments that make it easy to root for them. The supportive community and family dynamics add an extra layer of warmth that enhances the overall experience.
Readers who enjoy small-town romance, single-parent love stories, and emotionally driven relationships will likely enjoy this book. It’s a sweet and satisfying read that fits perfectly within the Slade Brothers world.

Sadie and her infant daughter, Poppy are running from her ex husband. She owns a coffee shop with her sister, Rowan. Sadie is constantly vigilant to the point of being paranoid about making sure everything in her shop and flat is locked up tight at the end of the day as her ex is fighting her for custody of Poppy. Axel Slade is smitten with Sadie but his usual charm is failing at breaking down the walls she has put up around her. However, he is persistent and eventually she agrees to go on a date and he learns about what she is so frightened of. Axel is then determined to use the power of his family's connections to solve the threat that Sadie faces so that he can build a future together with Sadie and Poppy.
Wow! This is an intense book but definitely one that I didn’t want to put down. I love the attraction that the MFC and MMC had throughout the whole book. Even though Sadie was very guarded she could tell there was something there between them but didn’t know how to accept that he was a good guy. I loved how Axel gave her space and come to him on her terms. It shows that there are good guys out there and they will do what they can to protect those that mean the most to them. Even after the run-in with the ex I was still waiting for him to somehow do something to mess things up. Glad it ended the way it did and there definitely has to be a book with her sister and his brother. The heat seemed like it was there! Can’t wait to read more.

Sadie is a single mom who is hiding from her past and the man that is out to harm her and Poppy her little girl. Sadie owns a coffee shop and this is where she meets Axel Slade. Axel falls for Sadie the moment he sees her. Of course, Sadie has built walls and trust no one but her sister Rowan. Axel slowly makes his way into Sadie’s life but not without obstacles. When her past finds her will Sadie trust Axel or will she choose not to accept his help.
Oh, how I loved this book. I loved how strong Sadie was but most of all I loved Axel and his steadfast love and determination. What a wonderful love story!.

Sadie and Axel they have such a beautiful love story. They have this chemistry that is palpable. Axel is so into her that is insane. Sadie is so guarded and refuses to let anyone in but Axel is persistent. She has been burned in the past and she got so many things to protect. Most importantly her daughter, and she will not let anything jeopardize that. Axel is determined to be there for her in anyway he can. She’s got the weight of the world on her shoulders and is fighting the attraction. I love watching them together, building this friendship. Watching them fall in love is so magical because they had to go through so much to get there happily ever after.
Sadie has been on the run from her ex and has settled down with her daughter whilst managing the coffee shop with her sister Roman’s support.
Alex has developed a routine of coffee and getting his fix of Sadie, he recognises her signs of being frightened and looking over her shoulder all the while but is adamant he wants to get to know her better.
This story involves Sadie’s ex coming back on the scene and threatening Sadie and her daughter future. Alex using the Slade assets to assist Sadie in her predicament.
Absolutely loved this story and hopefully you will too, looking forward to Rowans story.
A second generation novel in the Slade Brothers series by the mastermind, Alexis Winter. From the start, you just know this story will be a scorcher. The heat hits early when we get a glimpse of Axel Slade, who is tied in knots over the barista in the coffee shop. Axel has discovered a new side to himself, one of protector over Sadie and her baby daughter Poppy. An emotional page turner that the reader feels with each page flipped. Honesty, trust, strength to overcome the past are at the heart of this story. Running from becomes running to. Belonging and loved are one and the same, a new feeling, and it can't be surpassed. This book truly is a masterpiece, Thank you Alexis Winter.
That Spark By Alexis Winter Main Characters: Axel and Sadie I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author. 4 out of 5 stars I think this is the 7th book by Ms Winter I have read and reviewed. Sadie is a single mom with a young daughter Poppy. She is a strong female character hiding from her ex-husband. Axle is very alpha and he right away is very protective of Sadie. He does his best to break down the wall Sadie has so carefully built up to protect her heart. Loved the story.

Truly enjoying the Slade series. Axel and Sadie's sparky love story was amazing.
Axel love at first, Sadie always looking over her shoulder, felt the chemistry. Both not giving up. Fall in love. Story had everything. Adventure and suspense and lots of loving and passion. Emotions were felt throughout. Great having chararacters from pervious stories, continue to make these series so real. The Slade family all have a strong bond. Always there each other. Proctors in their DNA. Enjoyed how it all came together. Never giving up your hopes and dream.
Look forward to Aiden and Rowan. Hope they have their own love story.
I was a little disappointed in this book. There was a loss of cohesion like she lived above the cafe but had to drive in to work. Confusing. Also she moved to Virginia and then was in Colorado. Needs a lot more editing. During the accident with the coffee mugs that the coffee ended up on Axel, her screaming at him and her employee Saul doing the same, was totally unprofessional. I really couldn't see what he saw in her, she was so totally closed off with big neon flags. It is probably a good book for someone but I did not care for it.

That Spark by Alexis Winter is the story of Aiden and Sadie. She runs Pikes Peak, a local coffee shop. He and his family run a successful brewery in town. He is completely smitten the moment he meets her…and he gently pursues her…refusing to take no for an answer. But, there are events occurring with her and her daughter that are frightening and dangerous.
So much going on in this intense, hugely romantic read!!! Love Aiden sooooooooo much!!!! He’s gentle, loving, and patient. Sadie is strong, determined, and protective. Thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining, intense read!!
This is a tension-filled romance that pulls you in right from the start. The characters are well-developed and easy to become invested in—you can’t help but root for them as their story unfolds.
The settings are vivid and immersive, making each scene feel like you’re right there alongside the characters. I loved the slow build of tension throughout the book, which made the happy ending all the more satisfying.
'I have to decide if I’m brave enough to stop running. Or if some sparks are too dangerous to survive.'
The characters were very appealing and likeable and complicated and perfectly steamy together. Plot was intriguing and intense and well paced. World building was solidly drawn and impressive. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.
Grab a copy, kick back and enjoy!.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this single mum romance story by Alexis who is a one click author for me. Sadie is a single mum who runs the local coffee shop all while keeping a secret. Axel who is divine and he falls first. I was hooked from the beginning and it was well written. I am enjoying this series so far and I am excited for Sadie’s sister and Axel’s brother’s story as she was such a wonderful side character. I received this book as an arc for my honest opinion.
The love story between Axel and Sadie (along with the adorable, Poppy) will make make you smile. Sadie has been running from an ex who has threatened to take away what's most precious to her. Axel will do whatever it takes to protect and love them both. This book was a wonderful love story that showed the growth of Axel and Sadie learning to trust again.
Just loved Axel and Sadie’s story. How Axel works so hard and carefully to build a relationship with her and young Poppy. When life comes knocking on their door he’s there to help and protect them. How this all works out is a wonderful page turning read. It shows what a true family can be and how they support each other no questions asked.
Despite an obvious attraction between Axel and Sadie, Sadie is reluctant to let anyone in as she is running from her past but when danger threatens, Axel is more than willing to be her protector, not making all the decisions for her but helping her find a way forward together not only to safety but to found family. A lovely romance with drama and fun.
