Rarely are people given a second chance at life but if you are given the chance; always take it. This book is not only horror but a chance. To think about your own life. All the tasks and nightmares Kayla went through would be a lot for a person to push through. At first Kayla had no idea where she was or what she was supposed to do. I was confused right long with her. The Hollow Ones were definitely right up there for nightmare fuel. The idea that all these entities could follow her, touch her but had no faces….sheesh. And how terrifying to see multiple clones of yourself? Each one Kayla met was a frightening version. Once the purpose of Kayla being in Purgatory was discovered I cheered her on. When she was in the dollhouse was my favorite scene. At first, it seemed nostalgic but then it turned terrifying! I am not sure if I could have withstood all Kayla did and find the courage and strength to go on. The message I received from this story was if you had a second chance to make things right, what would you do to take it? I highly, highly recommend this book.

The Review

This was a truly intense and compelling horror read. The powerful imagery and atmospheric nature of the author's writing style were present from the very first page, allowing the haunting events to have a much greater impact on the audience or reader as the story progressed. Each trial the protagonist had to go through was chilling in the best way possible for this type of story, including the introduction of the "hollowed ones," whose introduction felt very cinematic and whose description was evocative.

What really stood out to me in this book was the author's ability to balance the scary horror elements with a much more profound introspective look at how life defines us as a people. It’s easy to let the past dictate our futures, but being able to confront past mistakes or trauma, and rising above, it is a powerful and motivating way of moving through life, and these trials, the author introduces and the revelation of where this random mansion/house in the woods really is well keep readers invested well also giving much more weight to the protagonist survival overall.

The Verdict

Haunting, engaging, and thrilling, author Allen Rebot’s “At Death’s Door” is a must-read horror novel. There are so many great twists and turns in the story, and chilling imagery that really entertain and engage the reader's imagination as the story progresses, creating an atmospheric and enthralling narrative with characters you can really root for and identify with.

*Thank you to booksirens for an ARC of this book*

This book was such a haunting and creepy read. From page one I was hooked and had this uneasy feeling through the whole book. As our MC works her way through this mysterious mansion she finds herself in, you are so drawn into the world and what is happening to her its so hard to stop reading. If you are looking for something that will just itch that spot of something is just wrong enough, this is the book for you.

Karla wakes up in a forest not knowing how she got there. Getting out turns out to be difficult.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it at night and the shark and the wax figure scenes were really creepy. The shark is definitely a childhood fear of mine as well. Really well written and interesting to read. Loved it.
