I’ve a few Books by L.M. Bennett on my TBR but haven’t really gotten around to it yet. (Shame on me but also I do rely on mostly audio books) But this one, especially the beautiful cover caught my attention and I caved and picked it up right after release. And it absolutely delivered!I couldn’t put it down.
In this second chance romance, the tension, the hurt and the fireworks between the two MC’s was so good….and hot. There was definitely a point where I thought I was going to produce that damn album myself, because I just wanted these two explode together so badly. And they did. The slow burn in this book was buuuurning and not just once, no, twice! How do you even do that?
My favorite romance stories are the ones that focus more one the characters feelings and their development, the slow burn and yearning for each other so much that it almost hurts and once they get to that point, let them experience all the fireworks and spice. I prefer when it feels like a reward and more like the cherry on top and not the main story of a book. And this book was the perfect example for it.
I also loved and appreciated the representation of two short hair masculine representing women in this book and on the cover. Have I mentioned how much I loved the Cover?😅 We don’t get see of hear about those pairings enough. And all the music and studio knowledge was great two. I love when romance books still give you a bit of nerdy knowledge from the Theme of the book.
Great read. Definitely want to read more by this author in the future.
the writing, the chemistry between the two was sooo good. i would of liked a chapter or 2 of them in the past just to really get a feel of them but the author still did a good job explaining their love story.
I love this book! Can’t wait for the next one in this world!
I received an ARC of Track Four Is Not About You, so I’m writing a comprehensive and brutally honest review. However, the writing and storytelling are so tight that I have nothing to be brutal about. I thoroughly enjoy this story of Shiloh and Bishop. By the way, I do not give spoilers PERIOD.
First of all, L M Bennett’s writing is layered and descriptive without being too technical to be accessible to the reader. Her writing is not simple, merely catering to a sixth grade reading level or below. God bless her! She wrote a damn good story, not just an energetic, fleshed out trope. You can not distill her writing into active constituents-tropes; don’t even try it!
With that said, let me tell ya …
L M Bennett is very efficient and effective with her words, and boy do the make an impact:
‘I should've been mad. Should've felt attacked, micromanaged, stripped of my artistic vision. Instead, I just felt…paper thin. Read cover to cover. "When did you get so bossy?" I tried to make it a joke. She almost smiled. "When I realized being nice was just another way of lying."’
Droppin’ pearls! Did ya’ll get that?‽! Now, go get the book! L M Bennett is not playin’ with ya’ll!
This book...! L M Bennett doesn’t waste words, but isn’t stingy with them either. Her books are well-researched and well-written. This one is no exception.
The TENSION… 😮💨 Done so right. Doesn’t get annoying or tedious. It’s character driven story. No female protagonist driving the plot, creating unnecessary drama. I really can’t stand that shit. Jealousy/envy is not a character in this story. It’s a delicious, slow burn with the perfect amount of spice.
Who the hell knows what goes on in a music studio? I don’t, even if it’s explain to me. The reader is an observer, and the author allows us to observe without needing to know what the hell everything does or means, and yet still appreciate it; just like in real life.
Track Four Is Not About You is a very interesting, multifaceted story with layers of depth to create a world we can visualize, and characters with emotions we can feel, and scenes we can experience. Don’t sleep on L M BENNETT. She is a gifted author who knows her crafts, and wields it with precision and seemingly effortless intentionality.
Her characters have the “hard” conversations. And that’s not new. L M Bennett writes a complete story; no insta-romance here. Her world building is such that the reader experiences the scene in the moment. Her character development allows us to care about them because we get to know them. Secondary characters may not play major roles, however, they’re not mere accessories without personalities and histories either. And her sex/love scenes are not descriptions of badly acted out porn scenes pretending to be love scenes in a book; there’s spice, care, and purpose there. L M Bennett is a very intentional writer. Read of of her novels or novellas; get hooked on them like me! 😁 I’ve read A LOT of L M Bennett’s stories; she’s an amazing talent, and it shows in every one of her books that I’ve read. This one is no different! I loved it!
I love introspective, self aware characters!
BONUS!! If you’re like me, and always try to find more of the author’s writing, book or story, after you’ve finished one that you loveLoveLOVE, L M Bennet did us a solid—she gave us a bonus little somethin’ somethin’ to read in the same world. I’m not giving up the goods; you’ll have to read it yourself, but it’s good good good! Thank you L M Bennett for another great story plus a bonus!
Was a surpringly great book. I was highly impressed with this one. I couldn't wait to get in bed each night and get in a few chapters, then after i started it, the kindle came with me to work so i could read on my lunch break, then i would read while i was waiting between my work out and the time to go to work in the morning. Then i'd rush home to read some more when i wasn't busy.
This book will have you on the edge of your seat saying will they or won't they. At first it will have you frustrated with all the tension between the two main characters, but once it settles down, you'll find yourself thoroughly pleased with the results. I don't want to give out any spoilers. but I want to say that if you are looking for something to put on your TBR, this is it. If you haven't already pre-ordered it, do it now and start it soon as it releases. LM put out a banger this time. If you aren't into masc/masc love stories, you will be after this. trust me the stories are worth it. don't be a hater and only want to read the heteronormative stories, these can be just as hot, if not hotter. cause whew, i wanted to call up someone to keep me warm when i read a few pages, but i had to contain myself.
i rarely give out 5 stars and this is my first read for March, and knowing it started off this way, i'm very pleased. I hope the rest of the month stays this way with more bangers. So i welcome recs that will have me on the edge of my seat begging for more. cause i for sure need some more of this book.
“Because you can’t replace someone who learned your language before you even knew you were speaking it.”
If you are looking for a second chance sapphic romance then this may be for you.
-stud x stud -rapper & producer -forced proximity -heavy yearning -exes & former friends -trust & letting go -slow burn -soft spice -strong music jargon/references -beautifully written
NGL, the beginning was hard for me to get into with the heavy musical details. But, when the story started getting into the chemistry between Bishop & Shiloh? Yes. This was refreshing to read. A lot of stud/stud romances I’ve read always include homophobia or stereotypes. But, this wasn’t anything like that at all. We deserve more Black love stories without that.
The musical connection the MC’s had reminded me of Sydney & Andre in “Brown Sugar”. “Shiloh laughed, and my brain saved the file under best sounds.” feels a lot like “When did you fall in love with Hip Hop…” in the best way. I was rooting for their romantic journey back to each other.
L.M Bennett’s writing style is so special. I knew that L.M would easily eat a stud/stud romance. Everything that I’ve read from her feels like a hug. The characters down to the experiences feel real. She has a forever fan in me.
I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this book and I’m so grateful. I love how much technical knowledge went into this book. You can always tell that L.M. Bennett did a lot of research or knows a lot about the subject she touches on in her books. I know nothing about music production but this book definitely motivated me to look stuff up. I love a book that teaches me something.
I’m a sucker for a good slow burn with lots of yearning and tension between characters and this one definitely scratched that itch for me. The key to a slow burn is to make sure that when they finally do get together, it delivers. Just know, them finally getting together got me together. 😂 Homecoming is my favorite chapter!
I wish Cathedral was a real song. I couldn’t imagine helping my ex produce an album and one of the songs is about me. That was wild. 😂 The entire time I kept trying to think of actors I’d want to play these characters in a movie. I wish we had stories like this on the screen.
Also, can we take a moment to just appreciate this book cover. So beautiful!
Can someone please pick my jaw up off of the floor? This book is so angsty and so messy and so beautiful. LM has a way of writing flaws into her characters that make you root for the messiness to win. I’ve never before wanted a character to ruin everything so that it could be built back again.
Shiloh and Bishop gave me chills! How can two people have so much tension between and leave everyone else in the room oblivious to it? It was like they were speaking a language that only the other person could understand.
Even the side characters in this book were messy and dramatic and I cannot wait to read more about them in the next book!
I don’t know what else to say about this book other than that I loved every single thing about it. I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for an angsty second chance romance with flawed characters and tons of drama.
Track Four is Not About You is an absolute gem I adored Bishop and Shiloh and the stud/stud rep is top tier!
I would have loved a couple of chapters of backstory and details of their relationship prior because the reconciliation was so tender with them finding home in each other again after all those years. I loved the dynamic of Bishop’s funny chaos and Shiloh's structure. The chemistry was as hot as the mic Bishop was laying into!
I love how L.M. writes period. But this one in particular uniquely captured the character voices and really transported me into the recording studio. I was sat right on the couch next to them !
Of course, if L.M. Bennett writes it, I’m buying and she delivered again with Track Four Is Not About You! If you’re interested in a stud/stud romance second chance romance that centers simmering feelings that fuels musical creativeness, then this one is for you!
Ooh now I want Trini food now 😋🤤
“Bishop was not here for the radio edit. She tongued my clit in slow circles, no mercy, no commentary.” 🥵😜
That was just amazing! Their relationship, their personalities, the tension, the chemistry, EVERYTHING was written so well! Even the side situationship was written so beautifully. I enjoyed this read! I do wish we got a little more of them at the end, but maybe that’s just me being greedy😭
Shiloh and Bishop had tension between them that made me want to crawl right into this book and join. L.M. has such a way with words…I could envision every scene. 10/10.
