How can you be a part of a couple's big day when your own love life is crumbling? Her once happy life in tatters thanks to a cheating husband, lacklustre career and a wrinkling face, Viv no longer believes in love and happiness. In fact, she hates them both. The problem is that as a marriage celebrant, gleeful love is what she has to deal with every day. With 10 hilarious and tragic weddings (and a funeral) to get through before she can give up being a celebrant, can she prove that love and happiness are the pathetic hopes of the naive, or will fate intervene and show her that what she secretly craves could be right in front of her?
As a marriage and funeral celebrant from Adelaide, South Australia, Susan Murphy has some stories to tell.
Having conducted hundreds of weddings, funerals, naming days and many other more 'out there' celebrations, storytelling is a natural part of the process.
Her first book 'Confetti Confidential: They Do, I Don't' was first published with Harper Collins, (and re-published in 2022), with the follow-up, 'Annabel's Wedding' soon after. Her third, 'Aloha Love' is now available in paperback and ebook through Kindred Ink Press.
After a stint as the Writer in Residence at the SA Writers Centre, Susan is now working on a historical fiction project as well as a new women's fiction series.
I absolutely LOVED this book!! This poor lady had everything that could go wrong, go wrong. I laughed so hard I cried at some parts and other parts I cried because I could feel the pain she was in. The book also has a wonderful dynamic of family. The sisters love each other and support each other no matter what they are going through. I recommend this book for a wonderful, heartfelt, comedic read. I want to thank netgalley, the author, and the publisher for allowing me to read this book for free.
Viv is a marriage celebrant and after her own marriage falls apart, becomes disillusioned with the idea of marriage. She honors the weddings she has already committed to and we get to meet a variety of interesting characters.
Is it too late for Viv to work things out with her husband or is there a new love on her horizon?
I liked Viv and her sisters. The romance plot was balanced out with other deeper issues so wasn't too light and fluffy. A debut novel by an Australian author. It was not full of Australian references, which may help it feel more universally relatable.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Okay, before I write this review I have to own up to the fact I know the author of this book. Despite that, initially I wasn't sure if I would read it (I mean "chick lit" - ye gads) and so I gave it to my wife. She kept laughing out loud as she read it in bed. She loved it. So I got curious and started reading. Turns out I did like this book, a lot. It was a crazy, fun read, great characters and a really cool premise. I would describe it as a cross between Sex and the City and The Wedding Planner. I may even read chick lit again!! Good lord, what is happening to me???
When Vivian catches her husband, Peter, gambling and lusting after a young gal at his office, she kicks him out. After 19 years of marriage and 3 children, she is hurt and angry.
Vivian is a celebrant for performing wedding ceremonies. With her long-time friend, Tom, who is a photographer, they have lots of business. She tries not to plan the events too close together to allow herself some time to breathe. Her job helps to keep her mind off her problems and with the sympathy and encouragement of her friend, Tom, she is managing to cope.
Vivian has 3 sisters with whom she is very close. They tell each other everything and ban together to help Vivian through this rough patch. The longer she is away from Peter, the happier and more independent she becomes.
When one of the sisters is diagnosed with a devastating illness, the sisters gather around her to help her through this difficulty. The book centers on the four sisters and their escapades, most of which are downright hilarious, yet for me, somewhat unbelievable.
During her time away from Peter, Vivian has met a man with whom she gets along well. She finds him attractive and very friendly.
But there is another person waiting in the wings for her. Whom will she choose?
While there were some funny things in this book, I couldn’t help but feel that the author tried to put too many events in the book which led me to feel that it was too “busy.” However, I’m sure that readers looking for a story chock full of all kinds of adventures will thoroughly enjoy it.
*This book was received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*
This was a really good book with great characters and a good plot. I initially found the story a bit hard to get into as I don't normally read books about people who are in their late thirties to mid forties. Once I got used to this however the book was quite enjoyable. The book felt realistic and the intertwining of the sisters' lives and their unique personalities were interesting. I didn't like the ending however as it seemed to rushed and I was left without a feeling of closure. Overall, this was a good read.
After finding out that her husband Peter has been cheating, marriage celebrant Viv is devastated and she decides that she no longer believes in love or in happily ever after. The problem is that she has committed to officiating at ten upcoming weddings and there is no going back on her commitment to these couples without ruining their special days. She has no choice but to soldier on through them but the fact that once she gets through these weddings she will no longer have to perform them is a comfort to her.
Complicating her already complicated life is the fact that her ex-husband is trying to make amends to her and to their three children. Is Viv ready to take her husband back or will a surprise confession from a mystery suitor change her mind about her ex-husband and about love? Viv's unique and loving sisters help her navigate the waters of being single and perhaps finding love again in this often funny and definitely thought-provoking book from new author Susan Murphy.
I have mixed feelings about Confetti Confidential: They Do, I Don't. Let me start with the parts that I enjoyed. I really loved the plot. Who doesn't love a book about crazy weddings? Susan Murphy is a marriage celebrant in her real life and she definitely brought the best of those weddings to life in this story. I enjoyed reading about the weddings- from the one that takes place in a couple's paved driveway to the one that almost resulted in a fist fight- and these parts of the book were a lot of fun to read. I also enjoyed reading about Viv and her sisters. They were all unique and far from perfect but the fact that they loved each other was evident and I appreciated the fact that they were always there for one another through thick and thin.
There were a few things that I didn't like about Confetti Confidential and one of those things was that I was often confused as to where the book was taking place. I believe that the author decided not to clarify the setting so as to make the book universally relatable, but for me that just resulted in confusion. There were a few references to things that were decidedly Australian yet I thought that the book was taking place elsewhere. It was unnecessarily confusing and I would have preferred to have known where the story was taking place.
I also had a problem with the ending of the book. *Spoiler* Throughout the book Viv is trying to decide between several men, one of whom has been her best friend forever. She is mainly worried about losing her friendship with him if things don't work out but when he leaves her for several months in order to lose weight, and returns thinner than he used to be, Viv falls for him immediately, although the day before she had doubts. That potion of the book bothered me simply because it made Viv seem shallow and I felt like it took away from the book as a whole.
There were some things that I liked about Confetti Confidential and there were some things that I did not. As a whole it was well-written and entertaining and I would be interested in giving a different book by this author a try. My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a review copy of this book.
I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley. Genevieve "Viv" is a wedding celebrant whose marriage of 19 years crumbles when she discovers he's had an affair and a gambling problem. She immediately kicks him to the curb, and clings to her best friend, Tom, and her 3 sisters. She becomes disillusioned about love and marriages, but decides to follow-through on the 10 weddings that were already on her schedule.
This book was filled with lots of interesting characters! And Viv gets into a lot of uncomfortably, funny situations. I loved the interaction of Viv and her sisters, and meeting the brides/grooms of the weddings she was officiating added a lot of fun to the book.
Each of her sisters supported in her their own unique ways, and . These five women have to support each other through more than just Viv's break-up, and they do it with lots of laughter and support. Makes you wish you were a part of such a close sisterhood.
Peter, Viv's husband, tries desperately to get back together with her. He makes some changes in his life and is a pretty regular character in the book. And then there is Tom, her very best friend. He leaves for London, shortly after the break-up, which Viv doesn't take too well. She misses her best friend quite a bit - especially when he doesn't reply to her emails and phone calls.
Fearing that she's lost him, too, she also meets/dates a couple of other men in book. With everything else going on, she suddenly has several men wooing her, including Tom, who has professed his love to her via email.
I'm not sure which of the men I wanted her to end up with, if any, but I was a little disappointed in the ending.
I thought there was a bit too much men-bashing in the first half of the book, but as Viv starts to forgive Peter a little and move on to finding love elsewhere, the men-bashing does lessen a lot.
I would recommend this book to someone looking for a light, fun read.
Genevieve, known to her friends and family as Viv, has been a wedding celebrant for several years. However, when her own marriage suddenly falls apart because her husband is cheating on her with one of his much younger female colleagues, Viv decides she no longer believes in marriage and wants to quit her job. She only has 10 weddings left to go, but in that period a lot can happen. When Viv’s best friend Tom decides to leave the country for three whole months and she receives some shocking family news, Viv can’t believe what her life has come to in such a short period. She knows she has to keep on going and believe things will get better, but sometimes that is easier said than done…
‘They Do, I Don’t’ is the first part of Susan Murphy’s ‘Confetti Confidential’ series and quite a promising and enjoyable start! I found it really easy to warm to and relate to main character Viv, whose life is suddenly turned upside down when she discovers her husband Peter has been cheating on her after 19 years of marriage. I really enjoyed how fast-paced this novel was and how the main storyline consisted of several aspects: Viv’s love life (with four serious contenders for her heart), her family (consisting of her three sisters with whom she is very close and her children), and her job as a wedding celebrant. There was no dull moment in the book as the story kept on going, which I personally really liked. I loved reading about the sisterly bond between Viv and her three sisters and was even quite surprised by some of the things that happened (I don’t want to give too much away, so I’m sorry if this sounds a bit cryptic!).
I wish there would have been space in the novel to have focused more on the ten weddings and one funeral Viv attends as a wedding celebrant; I loved this aspect of the novel and would have really liked it if this had played a bigger role. However, the novel was a great read with likeable characters and an entertaining storyline, so I don’t have anything to complain about, really! Susan Murphy is a promising author within the chick lit genre and I already look forward to picking up the second part of the ‘Confetti Confidential’ series, ‘Annabel’s Wedding.’ Overall, ‘They Do, I Don’t’ is a fast-paced, fun, and uplifting story about finding yourself, family, and friendship; a read I thoroughly enjoyed and can recommend to anyone looking for their next read!
How do you cope with being a marriage celebrant when your own marriage is in tatters?
Viv is faced with this dilemma. Ten weddings (throw in a funeral for good measure) and she can quit. Can't be that hard, can it?
At this point I wish to declare that I know Susan Murphy personally. However, the following review is submitted as a self-proclaimed bookworm who reads for enjoyment and escapism from her real life. This book delivers on both counts.
Susan Murphy crafts a fast paced, witty romp through the peaks and troughs of emotion as Viv launches headlong into unknown waters.
Her characterisations of Viv and the other people swept up in her wake may seem over-the-top to some readers, but I personally know of people who fit those profiles. Maybe I've had more life experience than some, but the saying "There's always one in every bunch" comes to mind.
I laughed, cringed, chortled, secretly wished I'd said or done that, guffawed and cried my way through the book as I journeyed with Viv and her crazy cohorts. Viv's exploits literally made me laugh out loud, to the point that I couldn't breathe. But it's not all laughs along the way. Viv and her sisters face more than one real life tragedy with the strength and love of family and true friends.
Murphy's book was hard to put down - sleep and 'duty calling' prevented me from finishing it in one sitting. There is non-stop action in one form or another, which adds to the sense that Viv's normally scheduled and orderly life has spiralled out of her control.
Murphy manages to reign in the mayhem nicely at the end, providing the reader with a satisfying and upbeat ending to this chapter of Viv's life. I was left wanting to know "What happens next?" so I'm hoping there's a sequel in the works. But, don't be lulled into thinking you know how it's going to end. There are twists and turns aplenty to keep the reader guessing.
Congratulations on your inaugural book Susan Murphy. You're definitely an author worth following.
How can you be happy and properly officiate weddings when your nineteen year marriage goes on the skids? That's what marriage celebrant Viv has to deal with when she catches her husband Peter cheating with a twenty-two year office co-worker. As her world turns upside down, and after over ten years performing weddings and any other ceremony her clients request, Viv just can't do it anymore, so she decides to quit after she officiates at her last ten clients' wedding ceremonies ... and throw in a funeral for good measure. For Viv, trying to pick up the pieces of her life while performing her duties can't be that hard ... or could it?
In her debut novel, Confetti Confidential: They Do, I Don't, author Susan Murphy weaves a thoroughly entertaining tale that has just the right amount of drama, comedy, and romance that easily draws the reader into Viv's story.
From ten hilarious weddings, a funeral, a heartfelt bond of sisterhood, enough crazy mishaps and daily life trials and tribulations that will make you laugh, and a unexpected romantic triangle, the reader is taken on an exhilarating roller coaster ride as they follow Viv as she tries to get her life back in order. This enjoyable story kept me turning the pages and left me smiling at the end.
The author had to have drawn from her personal experience as a celebrant to create this sassy story that allows the reader a little glimpse into the behind the scenes world of weddings. Confetti Confidential: They Do, I Don't is a refreshing story that is simply too good to not read!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review and participation in a virtual book tour event hosted by Chick Lit Plus Blog Tours.
I received a copy of this book from CLP Blog Tours in exchange for an honest review and as part of the book's blog tour promotions.
As far as chick lit goes, this book is one great example. First, the bigger story here is about the heroine and how she picked her life up after countless obstacles. It wasn't much about finding romance. It was more about a woman's resilience, a woman's intrinsic ability to be strong.
Second, it was also more about the relationship between the heroine and her sisters, ones she loved and was very close to. It showed how women bond, whether they are bound by blood or by a deep-rooted friendship. It shows how strong a sister's bond is. It shows that good womens stand by each other as much as they stand by their men.
The romance comes in last because everybody needs a significant other to love, even the strong heroines who clearly already have a lot of love in her life. So yes, there is still romance but it was not really the focus here. Personally, I could care less who the heroine ended up with as long as she was still the same person inside as she always was, strong, warm, dependable.
This book is definitely a good read and reader will surely enjoy the heroine's journey as well as the secondary characters who almost steal the show. I'd surely recommend this book to women who like their books clean with a dash of empowerment. This book certainly has the right mix of those.
I received a review copy When I first saw the cover of Confetti Confidential, I thought this would be chick lit all the way. While there are chick lit elements to it, I think it’s more women’s fiction, but that didn’t deter my reading at all. Viv’s world is falling apart, and after separating from her husband, she seriously considers giving up her career as a wedding celebrant. She has ten weddings still on the books, and vows to get through them and be done. Each wedding was pretty hilarious to read about, and as we get a taste of those, we’re also watching Viv try to pick up the pieces. What I enjoyed most about this read is that I didn’t know who she was going to end up with, romantic-wise. Her husband tries to make a comeback after his affair doesn’t work out, her best friend lays the bombshell that he loves her, she goes on dates. I was interested throughout, and I really enjoyed the ending, and it gave me a bit of a surprise! I thought this was delightful book and I hope you can give it a read.
What would you do if you were confronted with discovering the one you gave you heart too, the one you have spent nearly 20 years making a life with; betrays you in the worst way? Not only does he turn to another woman, he confided in her while making you feel like a failure as a wife. The anger, the disappointed, the hurt; it’s hard to imagine overcoming that without wanting to make him suffer. All this while having to officiate the happy delusional couples that have no idea how much can go wrong with a marriage. This is that story, Vivian story, which actually ends up being so much more! Vivian truly has some live changing events happen throughout the story, and while her marriage is on the rocks, she seems to use the turmoil work on making changes in her life. Not only a story, of change, but of how much love a family shares, relationships, finding love and ultimately finding oneself. Vivian’s story is sure to make you laugh, cry and feel like you have made a few unforgettable friends along the way!
I have to admit that I wasn't really into the book at first. I thought that the beginning was a bit abrupt with Viv found out about her husband and kicked him out. But after a while, I started to really enjoy the book. I like how reading about Viv as she learned to live separately with her husband. Even though Viv encountered few uncomfortable (but, funny) situations, I couldn't help but to laugh them.
Confetti Confidential: They Do, I Don't was a fun read. The pace was great, although I do think that there were too much event in the story. What I really like about this book was that, there were tons of interesting characters, but I especially love Viv and her sisters. Viv's sisters can be a bit crazy at times, but they're close and I adore the bond they shared.
I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend this to someone who loved light read with romance, family and lots of humor.
I received a copy of Confetti Confidential: They Do, I Don't by Susan Murphy from the author/CLP Blog Tours as part of the book tour.
This book was hard to put down. I really enjoyed reading this book from Susan. This book had more activity than war books I have read. Genevieve found out her husband Peter was having an affair. She is destroyed and makes him move out. Viv performs civil marriages and Tom is her photographer. They are best friends. Peter keeps trying to get back together. In the meantime Carrie, one of her sisters, finds she has Breast Cancer. While waiting thru surgery she meets David in the cafeteria. This story is a good combination of comedy and sadness. Susan has developed a family that I wish I had. They fight and get upset but always band together in hard times. There are some spoilers but the best is at the end. I won't give up so get the book to find out the ending. I hope you choose to read this book. E! I have this book for an honest review for NetGalley.
"Viv no longer believes in love and happiness. In fact, she hates them both! But the problem is, as a marriage celebrant, she has to deal with them every day ......"
I enjoyed reading this book - it is a funny, uplifting and very engaging story. Viv is a great character. The humour in the book is balanced by some more serious events as well, which makes it a satisfying read.
I will read the sequel as well when it comes out. The resolution at the end of the first book was lovely and I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next to all these characters.
This is a touching, romance. There is a lot to laugh, cry and think about.
Genevieve is a celebrant, with ten weddings in the works when she discovers that her husband is cheating. What ensues is the folly and tears of her life as she tries to figure out who she is and what she now wants out of life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! It kept me awake while breast feeding at night wanting to read more and more! I love that I couldn't exactly predict the ending as there were a few possibilities. I am definitely looking forward to reading the next instalment!
*I selected this for a Reading Challenge as a book a friend recommended.*
I received the book in exchange for a review. When the story started I thought another boring house wife book. But Viv is so funny and likeable tons of laugh out loud moments. A really nice story with turns out well with two people that belong together.
A fun romp through the crazy life of Viv, who you've just got to love. Being a marriage celebrant when your marriage is breaking down would test the best of us! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and found it effortless to connect with the characters who were all loveable in their own ways.
This book was OK. Peter was a total douche, and I felt sorry for Viv. There was a lot going on all at once. It did get a bit confusing in the beginning keeping all the sisters straight. Really not much else to say for me about this one.
I got this book because I was in the mood for something a bit different than my usual regency romance/mystery/suspense fare. I liked the book, but I can't rave about the book, it was just okay. For more romance reviews, check out my website: https://katherinasbooks.wordpress.com
Susan Murphy's 'Confetti Confidential; I Do, They Don't,' provides the quintessential escapism into the life of zany marriage celebrant Viv on facing her husband's betrayal. And underneath all the mayhem, ripples a beautiful love story. A chic-lit must read!
Hilariously funny and completely relatable. In the days of Instagram filters and plastic surgery obsessed middle age women this book was refreshingly, unapologetically raw and honest. I loved every page and read it in a day. Now on to Annabel’s Wedding. Well done Susan and thank you for making me laugh out loud A LOT!!!!
