Duty & Honor #3

Deep Cover

Rate this book
On a secret assignment for MI-5, British SAS soldier Trevor Carswell is deep undercover with The Philosophy of Bedlam, a home-grown anarchist group responsible for several museum bombings. He's on the brink of unearthing their motives when Scotland Yard foils their latest attack. Desperate to escape, the Bedlamites take civilian hostages — among them, a woman Trevor never expected to see again.

American political analyst Shelby Gibson is stunned when she recognizes Trevor, her one-time lover, brandishing a shotgun in the lobby of the August Museum of Modern Art. He's the last man she'd ever trust, but Trevor is no criminal, and he may be her only hope of getting out of the building alive.

With the woman he once loved in serious danger, Trevor will risk everything to get Shelby to safety, even if it means blowing his cover. As they search for the truth behind the bombings, Shelby and Trevor expose the powerful, desperate man pulling the anarchists' strings... and the half-century-old secret he'll kill to keep quiet.

The world of art just got a bit dangerous and political.

I’m a total gonner for a man in uniform. Combine a military romance with romantic suspense and it’s a total win-win in my books. Okay, I know I am totally biased as a military brat. So, I was totally psyched to be reading Deep Cover. Let’s just say, Ms. Jones doesn’t disappoint. Her background in Army Intelligence definitely serves her well in her writing. Deep Cover is about a British SAS officer undercover in a radical terrorist group and what happens when he runs into an ex-lover as one of the hostages taken in the group’s latest shenanigans. Say goodbye undercover op when her well-being is at stake.

Shelby Gibson has come a long way from her humble beginnings in a podunk little town where every expectation is that she should marry and procreate like a good little girl. Shelby had just a few other aspirations than being the arm candy or prize breeding mare to any man. Her aspirations though didn’t stop her from becoming engaged to the wrong man, another man out to use her for his upward mobility amongst the movers and shakers of the Washington set. Her job as a political analyst has her moving in rather high circles. Luckily, she wised up. Then one evening, she fell for the suave moves of SAS officer, Trevor Carswell. A hot and steamy encounter saw her waking to hear Trevor making plans to meet up with another woman. Well, color her done when it came to one, Trevor Carswell. That is until she’s face-to-face with him as a hostage. As much as she wants nothing further to do with him, she knows darn good and well he is not the man his current actions portray him to be.

When Trevor first saw Shelby, he knew if there was one woman he could love it was her. But, his life as an SAS officer doesn’t exactly lend itself to any kind of permanent relationship. It’s kind of hard to maintain a relationship when you never know when you’ll be leaving or coming back. Not many women are willing to put up with the life he could offer. So, Trevor has resigned himself to a life of one-night stands. He was never quite certain just what he did to earn Shelby’s disdain. Now he’s in a position where he has to choose between his undercover op or the only woman he’s had feelings for. Perhaps, the two of them can salvage something from this fiasco. The Bedlamites are creating damage to museums and the like. The group is run by someone in the shadows and it’s a mystery what the true motivation for the attacks are. If they are lucky, they’ll not only save the day but, find a love worthy of the two of them.

Deep Cover is full of action, adventure, suspense, and romance. Typical of any crime caper you have a mystery to solve. Ms. Jones has penned a totally enjoyable read I’m sure will please anyone who likes a bit of romantic suspense with a covert military operative and highly intelligent heroine.

I kept putting this book down. The story drags. There is some action and then it drags again.

3.75 Stars for a book that caught my attention after reading the synopsis. The plot is based on hostage stand-off with an unique situation, as the undercover special-op soldier, Trevor, recognizes one of the hostages as his former lover.
The story follows Trevor and Shelby through their escape and search for the truth. Passion still burns between these two, which heated up the storyline. I was on-board with this story until the last chapters, where it kinda went off the rails.

Trevor is an undercover SAS agent and Shelby is a political analyst. Trevor’s assignment is to infiltrate a group responsible for a rash of museum bombings. During one of the museum bombings, hostages are taken. This is where Trevor and Shelby reconnect and this book takes off and never lets go!

Shelby is a wonderful female character. I love strong female leads and the author did a fabulous job making her human. She is spontaneous and does not always think about the outcome of her actions….exactly like me!!

She and Trevor have some heated exchanges, on and off the bed! This is basically because their chemistry is SOOOO magnetic. And to say Trevor is hot is an understatement!

This book took off like a rocket and I was hooked. Between the chemistry, the quirky friends and the chase, it was difficult to put it down for a second!

This is Book 3 in the Duty and Honor series. I have not read the first two of this series and I did not even relize I was reading the third book until I was writing the blog post. Now I have another series I am behind on! I must get busy!!

I received this novel from the publisher for an honest review.

Having waited for Shelby and Trevor with such impatience, 'Deep Cover' didn't disappoint at all when it came to breathless non-stop action of a museum raid gone wrong, reconnecting 2 one-time lovers in a situation that spans merely a few days. The introduction of secondary characters was a great surprise, developed enough that I now want a Simon and/or Lark (or even a Simon/Lark) story of their own, who worked seamlessly with a competent H/hr pairing.

But I'm torn between rating this a 3- or 4-star read, because the book doesn't quite go beyond the immediate ramifications of Shelby and Trevor's present situation and it all supposedly closes with a HEA ending immediately after the climax (and not a sexual one too), very much like the movie 'Speed'. At the end, I feel as though I'm still left carelessly hanging by several loose threads that sort of tied up the crime hanging over their heads but not the personal relationships.

I'd thoroughly enjoyed the first two instalments of this series, but DEEP COVER was mediocre at best. The suspense plot and action were uninspiring, the characters weren't particularly memorable, and I was never compelled to be invested in or care about the relationship between them.

Great writing!

I love this author! Original plots, skilled action sequences, great heroines that can stand alongside and many times in FRONT of the heroes, and 100mile an hour action!

I really enjoyed this 3rd book in Leslie Jones duty and honour series. Shelby was a strong, intelligent heroine. The suspense and action packed excitement kept me on the edge of my seat. I absolutely loved Trevor the hero, after his interaction in the 2 previous books I knew he'd be a exemplary hero. I hope we get to see more of Shelby friend Lark she is an amazing character.
