What's not to love about penguins? They're cute, funny, awkward on land (and ice), graceful swimmers. Author Janet Evans treats us to descriptions of eight of the major species of penguins in her book Penguins: 101 Fun Facts & Amazing Pictures and introduces us to the world of penguins. She covers their anatomy, feeding habits, habitat, and sometimes peculiar behavior. It is targeted for the youth market but is an enjoyable read for kids of all ages. We took a cruise that went from Argentina to the Falkland Islands and finally to Antarctica and we were able to experience many penguin species at various locations in their natural environment. As we have seen in nature videos, in real life they generally seem to be cute and playful from our perspective. We learned about their constant trips to the ocean to feed and bring back food for their chicks and were told not to interrupt them because they may forget if they were on their way to feed or on their way back. Overall this was a quick read loaded with facts and pictures and let's face it, you can never learn too much about penguins! Especially the smell of a Rookery!
This is a great book for elementary school children. It is divided up into 8 sections by the type of penguins. The facts are easy to understand. The photo of each penguin is impressive.
I loved learning about all the different types of penguins. I had no idea there were so many, or that they inhabited so many regions. A good, quick read.
