4.5 I admit I was apprehensive going into this book because I am a romance girlie and even with my love of dark romance, I wasn’t sure that would translate over into the horror genre because it’s never been a genre I was drawn too and since it’s not romance, you’re not guaranteed HEA. But omg this was really good, and I was surprised but how much I enjoyed it, and it makes me curious about exploring the genre more. There were times I wanted to put the book down bc it was getting very creepy but at the same time I didn’t want to put it down because I wanted to find out what happened next. I enjoyed the pace of the story and the story line and it was a MultiPov which I think worked perfectly for this story since each character is going to have different encounters with the ghosts as well as even if there are multiple people experiencing the same encounter what happened to them differed and usually rehashing the same scene just from a different character would kind of annoy me but here it made sense.

Now the book has 4 characters/POVs and they center mostly on Beryl & Derek who are sort of the MCs with the side characters being Jim, Frank & Ryan. When it came to the two MCs Beryl and Derek, I liked how determined Beryl was. Yea I kept screaming at her to not go in the house, but when this is something, you believe in whole heartedly and all the odds are against you and this is your big moment, I can see why she stuck to it even when the dangerous is obvious. I can also see why she starts off so prickly at the start being a woman in this field and doing everything herself and then to come face to face with a handsome man who has the $ backing who seems like everything came easily for him and then throw in the fact he scoffs at your beliefs and what your trying to prove. Well, that would make me salty and prickly. Now with Derek, I liked him, but I will say I wanted to slap him upside the head just like Beryl how he just refused to believe even after his own experiences and when they caught proof on camera a ghost. Like come on a gas link is not going to manifest on camera a ghost. But he was a good counterbalance to Beryl, and they had some good tension going on that made their fights entertaining.

Now for the ghosts and the ghost story. I think the author built up the tension so well not just before each ghost encounter but also throughout the book. I just kept wanting to scream at these people WHY DO YOU KEEP GOING BACK IN!!! Like I get they are ghost hunters one trying to prove the existence and the other a sceptic trying to provide reasonable answers to what people think are encounters to me as an outsider after the first encounter and how it went down had me going these people are fucking insane to go back in each night and not just hightail it out of there and recommend it be burned to the ground or hell burn it themselves. Accidents happen especially with old buildings like this. Also, the twist at the end I didn’t see coming and had my mouth hanging open in shock.

Overall, I enjoyed the book in a genre I was apprehensive about and now I am curious and want to explore it more. I hope the author continues to write books in this genre bc I would definitely read them.

This book is about Beryl who has spent years chasing ghosts determined to prove that the paranormal is real. Armed with just a handheld camera she does her best to document haunted locations for her growing YouTube channel. So, when she gets the opportunity to investigate Windlow Manor one of the most haunted estates in the country she sees this as her chance to finally get the evidence she needs to prove ghosts and the paranormal are real. The only problem is that she will not be the only one investigating the site as the produced, networked backed show Ghost Debunkers with its Host Derek Garcia will be there as well. As the name of the show says he will be there doing the opposite of Beryl and doing everything he can to prove there are no ghosts and that that every "supernatural encounter" people claim to have is just all made up by humans and can be explained away with science. But the moment they each step into the house they can tell something is off and it doesn't matter that Beryl believes and what Derek thinks he can explain away because the house is awake and has plans of its own when it comes to all that cross its threshold. As the encounters the crew experience grow it will have Derek starts to wonder if he’s been wrong all along, while Beryl begins to fear she’s finally in over her head. Which means soon the question isn’t about whether ghosts exist, but rather will the manor let them leave alive.

Full disclosure: I am the author's PA, and I received an ARC copy, but I will always be honest.

Omg where do I ever start! Paranormal investigating at its finest! I literally devoured this book and could not stop reading. Beryl and Derek go to investigate Windlow Manor but only one of them believes in the paranormal while the other does not. Both having something to prove, they are both totally shocked by what they discover. I love the horror vibes of this book and all the little twists and turns along the way. This was easily a 5 star read for me!

I’ve read all of Evie’s books and after I’d read abyssal a year ago or so, I’ve been dying for another from her. This book met every expectation. I’ve never been one for paranormal books, at least not to read regularly however THIS BOOK? I couldn’t stop reading. If I’d have started it earlier in the day this past Friday, I would have finished it same day. My heebies were thoroughly jeebied. I knew that this was a day time only book for me after getting anxious in my own house after the sun went down. 🤣 if you’re looking for a fantastic paranormal book to capture your interest, you HAVE to pick this one up!! Now stop reading if you don’t want spoilers!

This book follows Beryl Jacobs of a fictional YouTube channel, Beyond the Veil where she goes to haunted places and investigates the paranormal. This time, she is at Windlow Manor in Winchester, CT. The difference in her investigation this time is she has to work simultaneously with her competition and big network stars Ghost Debunkers, Derek (uh hot!), Jim, Frank, and Ryan. Ghost Debunker’s entire mission is to explain away things our minds immediately want to say are paranormal things. Since the two do not wish to get in each other’s way, they decide to split the areas they have access to. Ghost Debunkers are only scheduled to shoot for 10 days while Beryl was given 28. Many paranormal events occur, from hallucinations to possessions to that eerie feeling you get when you are for a lack of a better word, f*cked in a sticky situation. After a few days of investigation, Beryl is offered a temporary contract to combine footage and EVP’s with Derek and his team. She eventually signs and they choose to investigate the manor in groups of 2 while Ryan mans the command tent. Before signing this contract though, Beryl has a very bad encounter on the 3rd story landing. This is imperative to the story. She has thoughts of how she is about to pass out and die as she was starved of oxygen before she was fully on the next floor. She survived the encounter and ran from the manor and Derek found her outside and comforted her. Back to them teaming up, Jim and Frank are one team and Derek and Beryl are the other. Derek and Beryl go through old journals from the manor and discover that there must be a secret passage. During their search they stumble upon a secret room that has recipes for cannibalism and paranormal rituals. They are rightfully so, disgusted and end the investigation early that night. The following night, they investigate the ballroom which is where Beryl learns she is right, there is a secret passage. Derek and Beryl investigate the passage and once again get the gut feeling to run away. They successfully escaped. They hook up after that absolutely wild encounter (I mean why not right? 2 hot people with an insane adrenaline rush?!). The next morning the crew wakes in the on property cottage where no paranormal activity has been detected to their electronics being destroyed, the cameras, laptops, phones, etc. and a huge fight takes place. Ryan and Jim decide they are going to head into town and this is where it gets crazy! Jim intentionally makes Ryan wreck the van and they’re both knocked unconscious. Frank, Derek and Beryl help them get out and make sure they’re not unalived. As Frank is checking Jim over, Jim suddenly wakes up and promptly bites Frank in the neck before sprinting to the manor! Beryl and Derek decide they need to go find Jim and leave Frank and Ryan at the cottage. As Derek and Beryl search for Jim they know they must re-enter the secret passage. They get down there and there’s a sacrificial altar but as they are looking around THE SEE BERYL’S UNALIVED BODY!!! SHE DIED ON THE STAIRS THAT NIGHT! NEXT TO HER ARE BOTH FRANK AND RYANS BODIES! They have each been harvested for organs for the consumption process humans do. Jim appears out of nowhere and knocks Derek out before setting him on the altar. I’ve forgotten to mention, the one pulling all the strings? A demon disguised as a little girl. She manipulated Jim into killing everyone and harvesting them for HER to eat them and drink their blood! And the owner of the manor? Joseph Garfield? He is actually Alfred Windlow, the original owner of the manor and underwent a ritual in 1817 to become immortal, his MIL Rachel? SHE went through the same ritual in 1810! It ends with Joseph and Rachel coming up to the manor and Abigail (the small child demon thing) greeting them. Joseph shares some words with Abigail and Abigail gets mad and (in my conclusion) kills Joseph while Rachel races away and it just ends! The plot twist got me. I wasn’t expecting everyone to die and actually hoped for a happy ending. Well done Evie.

A Review: Beyond the Veil by Evie Black

First, I have to say how grateful I am to have received an ARC of this book. It’s always an honor to read something before its official release—and this one made that experience even better.

Windlow Manor isn’t just haunted—it’s the kind of place that feels wrong the second you step inside. Too quiet. Too aware. Like it’s been waiting for someone to show up.

Enter Beryl.

Beryl fully believes in the paranormal and runs her own independent podcast. No network, no big budget—just her, her belief, and the drive to chase something bigger.

Then you’ve got The Ghost Debunkers—a fully funded, network-backed team whose entire job is to prove ghosts aren’t real.

And somehow, these two worlds collide inside one of the most haunted houses in the U.S.

That contrast? It carries the entire book.

Because Beryl feels real. She’s not polished or packaged—she’s just doing what she loves without waiting for permission. Watching her stand next to people with all the money and resources, but none of the belief? It’s so satisfying. It feels like a quiet nod to indie creators who are just out here building something on their own.

But the moment they step into that house, none of that matters.

The paranormal activity is constant—EVPs, encounters, things that feel off in a way you can’t explain. It’s not just one scary moment—it’s the entire book. The tension never lets up.

And it’s not just the house.

There’s something else there. You feel it early, even when you can’t explain it yet. It builds in the background the entire time. Add in disturbing discoveries and a growing sense that something much darker is at play, and this book fully leans into the paranormal.

There’s also a slow-burn romance that somehow makes everything feel more intense instead of softening it.

If you grew up on Goosebumps and want that same feeling—but darker, creepier, and completely unhinged—this is it. This is the adult version of things that go bump in the night.

The best paranormal book I've ever read. I can't remember the last time a book gave me the goosebumps!!

I received this ARC for an honest review.

Beyond the Veil starts with Beryl Jacobs, a passionate paranormal enthusiast who runs a small Youtube channel and finally gets the chance of a lifetime: investigating a notoriously haunted location called Windlow Manor. When she gets there, she sees that there's another group there that's there to debunk the paranormal. One of the 'debunkers' name is Derek Garcia who was Beryl's rival for years but that rival quickly shifts. As things start to get more dangerous, they're forced to start working together. This book is more creepy/dark/suspenseful than romance-y but there is a little spice 🌶️

I don't want to post too much of the ending because of spoilers but when I tell you my jaw was on the floor! I did NOT expect any of that at all! Although, I'll warn you, it gets dark ;)

Tropes:

Opposites attract
Forced proximity
Rivals to partners
Haunted house
Isolation
Escalating Paranormal Activity
Secrets of the past
Grumpy skeptic/passionate believer

Evie Black has done it again, Beyond The Veil is a horror story mixed in with a love interest. She sucks you in from the very story up until the end. I have to say this book drew my attention and I didn’t want to stop reading, everything that you find out in this story will chill you to the bone. But it will keep you wanting more.

This story follows Derek and his ghost hunting crew, and a manor they explore. Then you have Beryl a woman investigator with no backing from a production company, but holds her own doing her own investigations she streams online to her faithful viewers. Beryl and Derek aren’t the best of friends or even nice towards each other online, but they end up at the same haunted manor at almost the same time they have permission from the owner to explore this haunted manor.

Read and find out what happens to Derek, his crew and how Beryl and him deal with each other and just al the spooky and creepy stuff that happens on their investigations, you won’t be disappointed.

Ok so I love Evie so of course I had to jump on this book! My mom and I are into the paranormal stuff and always watch the investigation shows so of course I had to read this and I loved it so much I’m gonna try to get my mom to read it! This story follows Beryl and Derek two paranormal investigators that are investigating the eerie Windlow Manor, but only one of them believes in the paranormal, the other it just in it for the money. Can they put aside their disdain for one another and get down to the bottom of what is happening at The Manor? Read along to find out you will not be disappointed! Oh and don’t read in the dark 😉

*plays house by Charlie xcx*

I enjoyed how Beyond the Veil is a horror story told through first hand paranormal investigator accounts, as well as fan tweets, old letters, newspaper clippings, household documents, and even some EVP recordings. It truly made the ‘ghost hunters’ experience of the book way more believable, and gave an added sense of dread.

With all haunted house stories, there’s also a mass of trauma to get through, and the author does so in a way that feels claustrophobic, and yet, so gripping. It’s easy to fall in love with these characters, but it’s torturous to witness their current plight.

This. Was. Amazing! I love books that keep me guessing and that has a plot I can't just guess within the first few chapters. HOLY COW was I on the edge of my seat the whole time!! The only thing I regret is that I read this in April and not prime spooky season. I received an ebook of this but will be getting a hard copy ASAP so I can reread it and lend it to friends to make them suffer the same shock and horror that I have! 10/10 vibes and story

"Beyond The Veil" is an incredible book! I really appreciate stories that keep me on my toes and have twists I can't figure out in just a few chapters. The writing style creates such vivid imagery that it's like watching a movie unfold in my mind while I read. This haunted house tale was so engaging that I found myself staying up late to finish it. The ending caught me off guard, adding a unique touch to the overall story.

Ok, first I am not usually into what would be deemed reality tv. I never watch the ghost shows. This was really good. This was a crazy horror. The murders start and just keep going. There is crazy plot twists. I won't give spoilers, yet omg this is a crazy story. It has all the creepy vibes, demons, murders, and it even has the neighborhood children that sneak in.
Even if you don't like reality tv check this one out. It shocked me.

I may not be someone who reads a lot of horror, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was a big fan of the relationship development between Beryl and Derek. Their banter, when they finally get past the bickering, had me chuckling as I read along.

For people who enjoy a little spice with their spooky, this is a good read for you! It's got jokes, it's got frights, and enough trauma to go around. Congrats to Evie Black for her foray into horror. Would definitely read more. :)

I didn't know what to expect going into this book but I am pleasantly surprised just how much i enjoyed it.

Im not normally into paranormal stories but this one actually kept my attention and had me guessing on what was going on. The fact that I didn't already have it all figured out when everything started to click in place makes me like this book even more.

🤯 Wow! Evie Black really wrote a wonderful book! This book is a wonderful horror book with romance added to it. This house. I did not think I would ever want to stay at this house! However, Beryl and Derek and his crew go to stay in this house for 28 days. What the encounter well you’ll need to read that to find out. I hope you suggest this book I could not put it down.

Beryl and Derek both have something to prove. Beryl finds an opportunity to finally do a paranormal investigation in a place she has longed to visit but soon finds her nemesis Derek is there to try to disprove such activity. The angst between the two is secondary to the unexplained activity occurring in the manor. Unexplainable phenomenon finally leads Derek to second guess his own beliefs and strive to keep Beryl safe from her reckless drive to prove the haunting is real. I enjoyed the story line but the ending left me broken. I received this book in the form of an ARC and give of my own free will this review.
