The second book in this series is a great continuation that ramps up everything I enjoyed from the first book while throwing the characters into even deeper peril.

Picking up directly from the chaos at the end of Book 1, we find Kalen along with his battered companions banished to a strange, deadly otherworld! 😮

Their desperate alliance with the fae and the legendary king Elflun Lightbringer feels both wondrous and fraught with danger, and the high stakes bargain they strike with the ancient greater fiend Thezgoron is one of the most tense sequences I’ve read in a while. That deal carries real weight, the kind where you can feel the characters’ souls hanging in the balance.

Ruthless reapers, the ever dangerous shapeshifter, shadowy plots from greater fiends like Astaroth and Morgaelion, and a host of new horrors keep the tension high throughout.

No one feels safe, and every choice comes with brutal consequences that actually matter. The story builds toward rallying the fae army and confronting overwhelming odds, blending large scale war and dark magic with intimate personal struggles, especially Kalen’s internal journey.

It stays consistently dark and gritty without crossing into pointless grimdark territory. When courage and blood aren’t enough, the turn toward darkness feels earned and carries a heavy price.

As its second book, it does leave some threads open for future installments, which would make sense. That said, thisstory delivers satisfying payoff while expanding the world in exciting ways.

The writing is immersive and effective, carrying you through the otherworldly realms and battles without getting overly flowery.

It’s ambitious indie dark fantasy that delivers on its promises of demon schemes, fae intrigue, shapeshifter betrayal, and high cost redemption.

I’m fully invested now and looking forward to Book 3.

If you like your epic fantasy with teeth, moral gray areas, and relentless stakes, this series is absolutely worth diving into.

The Faceless Chronicles continues to impress me because it refuses to take the easy route with its characters.

One of the strongest aspects of this series, particularly this book, is how it handles trauma, identity, and personal growth. The relationship between Balidin and Gwynden is particularly compelling. Rather than presenting a simplistic "split personality" trope, the story explores how trauma can fracture a person and how different parts of someone's identity can emerge as survival mechanisms. Watching Balidin struggle to reclaim himself, only to seemingly surrender to Gwynden after a devastating emotional blow, was heartbreaking and believable.

The supporting cast continues to shine as well. Sasha, Jerlin, Kalen, Irisa, and even Lord Drendal all feel like individuals with their own motivations rather than characters existing solely to advance the plot. Jerlin's confusion and compassion during Sasha's confrontation with Balidin added a surprisingly human layer to an already emotional scene.

The worldbuilding also expands in fascinating ways. The mythology surrounding Creation, Uncreation, the Swords of Order and Chaos, and the broader cosmology adds a sense of scale without completely overshadowing the personal stories at the center of the narrative. Elflun Lightbringer was especially memorable because he subverts expectations. Rather than a larger-than-life legendary king, he comes across as an aging man carrying the weight of history, which makes him far more interesting.

What I appreciate most is that the series consistently focuses on the emotional consequences of its events. Characters don't simply move from battle to battle. They carry grief, regret, hope, resentment, and love with them, and those emotions shape their decisions.

A thoughtful continuation that deepens both the characters and the lore while maintaining the emotional heart that made me care about this world in the first place.

The Demon’s Reckoning by Grant Pierce Author is the 66th book I’ve read this year. This epic fantasy is book two of The Faceless Chronicles and takes place immediately after book one. Because of this, there may be some spoilers for book one in this review.

As we left off, one of the fiends has been released and our band of adventurers are having to regroup and find out who’s hurt or dead. Now stuck behind the portal, the survivors have to find a way home. The land they are in now is… inhospitable, at best, and unlikely allies aren’t always what they seem.

Whiplash from unravelling everybody’s self-serving goals and finding out the details of history that our adventurers have never heard before creates such an emotional rollercoaster. Several times we see a character do what they think is best, only for it to turn out to set in motion pain and death. Yes, death. Nobody is safe.

The relationship jumble between Kalen, Jadica, Irisa, and Lord Drendal continues and becomes much more complicated with the addition of, well, we’ll call them outside influences. Other relationships and friendships are tested, broken, and reformed through all the trials they go through. So many times I gasped as another twist was thrown at me, another appearance I wasn’t expecting.

I’m not sure my heart can take book three, but I know my heart can’t take not reading book three.

The Demon’s Reckoning is the sequel to The Shapeshifter’s Gambit. It is a bit difficult to get too far into this book without spoiling the last, so I will.

The book answers the question: “What would happen if the bad guys won?” The last book ends with a cliffhanger; the heroes fail their quest to stop Astaroth from returning. Not only that, a second great fiend, Morgaelion, returns as well. In an epic confrontation, the fiends, who are also mortal enemies, battle each other in addition to the humans. The two fiends enter into Aeryth, the heroes' home world, while the heroes are stuck in Nymriel, the realm of the fae.

They have an interesting mix of accepting this new life vs wanting to try to get back home. Eventually, they do come up with a plan to return home, which involves releasing the spirit of a third great fiend, Thezgoron, into the sword of chaos (this was the sword they were pursuing in the first book). When crossed with the sword of order (while mentioned in passing in the first book, we actually see it now), a portal back to Aeryth can be created. The story also featured another plot, that of Jadica and her fellow servants of Astaroth, who have been sent to Nymriel on a suicide mission.

We see many of the cast from the previous book: Valko, Jadica, and others. Actually, I think some of the antagonists are so well portrayed that you actually root for them at times. In fact, despite having no dialogue, Torgul is one of my favorite characters in this book. His actions are depicted well, and it’s quite amazing how much his personality shines through them.

The Heroes also get to meet a hero of their own: Elfun Lightbringer, who is mentioned in the previous book, lives in the realm of the fae. The heroes are surprised to learn that he is pretty ordinary. They reveal to him that in their world, there is a prophecy that he will save them once again. Elfun isn’t inclined to believe and rejects the larger-than-life pedestal they try to put him on.

As in the last book, the story is full of intrigue and fluid allegiances, with just a hint of romance.

I did mention that some of the exposition was a bit heavy-handed in the previous book. I think that is largely resolved in this book.

Furthermore, since most of the characters are well established already, I think the cast is quite manageable and balanced. The characters are well-written and distinct. The interpersonal relationships between them are interesting and thought-provoking. As just one example, as I mentioned before, the fiends are mortal enemies of each other. They plot how to destroy and ruin one another. Likewise, the interests of the heroes differ as well. It all results in an interesting web of interactions that is exciting to see unfold.

For lovers of high fantasy and complex plots, I recommend this book. I disappeared into it to emerge hours later, which is really some of the highest praise I can give.

First and foremost, The Demon’s Reckoning is a sequel to The Shapeshifter’s Gambit and it picks up where that book leaves off. I strongly recommend reading book one first. Not just for context, but because this story launches you forward while you’re still emotionally wrecked from an epic, hard‑fought battle. There’s no easing back in. You start this book already carrying the weight of what came before—and so are the characters.
Without spoiling anything, we begin with whatever remains of our once‑merry band of heroes, scattered, battered, and very much changed. They find themselves in an entirely new world—one that’s as fascinating as it is dangerous—and along the way we’re introduced to new characters you’ll quickly learn to love… and a few more you'll absolutely love to hate.
The pacing early on is understandably more measured than in The Shapeshifter’s Gambit. Everyone—characters and readers alike—are still recovering, emotionally and/or physically. Once the story picks up, it really picks up, with escalating tension, brutal battles, and increasingly impossible odds as our heroes fight their way toward home.
One of my favorite new character additions was Elflun Lightbringer, a character whose reputation looms large in the first book. They say you should never meet your heroes and some of the characters in the book agree... but I don't - I loved him!
At its core, The Demon’s Reckoning continues to explore themes of duty and loyalty—and, more importantly, how far we’re willing to go for each. The villains remain terrifying (with some chilling new additions), and the heroes are perfectly imperfect. That imperfection is what makes them so relatable. They’re not righteous paragons—they’re people doing their best in truly terrible circumstances, making hard choices with no clean answers.
If you enjoy dark epic fantasy where victories are earned, consequences matter, and characters feel painfully human, The Demon’s Reckoning is a must‑read. It’s emotionally rich, relentlessly tense, and a powerful continuation of a series that isn’t afraid to break your heart before stitching it back together—just enough to keep you turning pages. I'm looking forward to reading the next one!

This book is brutal, epic, and absolutely overflowing with dark fantasy chaos 👀🖤🔥

A world on the brink of destruction?
A desperate bargain with an ancient fiend?
Heroes forced to walk through darkness to save everything they love??

Yeah… I was hooked IMMEDIATELY.

The stakes in this book are MASSIVE.

The forces of evil are winning, Aeryth is burning, and Kalen and his companions are thrown into a deadly realm where survival is never guaranteed.

And honestly??

The tension never lets up.

Every step forward comes with a cost.

Every alliance feels dangerous.

Every choice carries consequences.

The world-building was incredible, especially with the fae kingdom, legendary figures, ancient fiends, and the constant feeling that something terrible is lurking just around the corner.

Then add in reaper assassins, murderous shapeshifters, demon schemes, and multiple villains all pursuing their own agendas...

AND WOW 👀🔥

The story constantly keeps you guessing.

What I loved most was that there are no easy answers here. The heroes are pushed to their limits and forced to make impossible decisions where redemption and ruin often look exactly the same.

✨ If you love:
• dark epic fantasy
• fae kingdoms
• demon bargains
• high-stakes adventures
• morally grey choices

This one is dark, immersive, action-packed, and impossible to put down 🖤🔥⚔️

They are trapped. They are lost in another world. Another world of the Fae Realm with their king Elfun Lightbringer, one of the legends who started this war eons ago. The King who supposedly finished it. Discovered by the Fae and taken in as guests, the traveling group has to start all over again. The world as they know it is beyond their grasp now. The portal is closed with no way home.
Time passes differently within the Fae world. What may be weeks within their home, is months in the Fae world. Time is not on their side. How will they get home and save their home world? Have they lost any chance of doing so?
To make the situation even more dire the king is not what they expected. The Fae prophecies are different than the human's. The Fae seem to find the humans views, way of doing things, and prophecies laughable. Can they get along for the sake of the world(s) to save it? Can they find a common ground?
This book ended up having one of the most shocking and unexpected plot twists I've ever read! You will know it when you see it. I had no idea that it would turn around this way and set up for even more unexpected events.
If you loved book 1 you have to continue with this read. I will be completing the series all through book 6, once in hand! The bold, the glory, the fighting scenes; the betrayal and love twists. All of it made every minute of this book worth it.

This book picks up exactly where the last book left off. The author escalates everything from the stakes to the character interactions to the final boss battle to the romantic relationships between characters. There were a few shocking moments where I was like WTF (in a good way). I don’t normally get vested in character arcs. I read books mostly for the action scenes. This one made me upset for certain characters at times and made me jump for joy at others. Speaking of action scenes, they are well-written, descriptive, and creative. The multiple characters with their own agendas kept making me wonder how the final battle might play out. I was not disappointed. One of my new favorite characters in the book is a minotaur-like beast called Torgul. The unpredictability of what will happen next seems like this author’s strength in a plot driven book.

I am once again in awe of Mr. Pierce. I couldn't read this fast enough! I love the way Mr. Pierce tells stories and has a way of drawing his readers in from the first chapter.

I am fully invested in Kalin and Logan's journey. It was sad to see a character I liked die off, but then the ending 👀 I just stared at the wall for a full 5 minutes after replaying the whole book. There were times I was talking to the characters and yelling at them or encouraging them lol

Full disclosure: I suspected something about a character in Book One and the validation I got from knowing I was right! Book Two I still am unsure if I like this character so I am excited to see if my mind changes.

Once again I am gonna give Mr. Pierce a 6 🌟

A really great follow up to the first book, picking up exactly where we left off. The pacing of this book really ramped up, with so much happening from the get go and some brilliantly written fight scenes.
Really enjoyed exploring the world of Nymriel and the dynamics of the fae and their politics and way of life. I feel in this book the characters were given a lot more room to develop, and we really get to know them and their motivations. The author has a real talent for writing villains that are undoubtedly evil but somehow relatable enough you can’t quite find it in yourself to hate them. Definitely looking forward to the rest of the series!

Picking up where book 1 left off; this next installment doesn't hold back. If you like your fantasies dark, high stakes, brutal and unyielding; this is the book for you.

I am totally vested in Kalin's journey, and I can't wait to see how he defeats foe after foe all while trying to keep his friends safe and save the world.

This book will have you in your feelings. There are some wins and losses. You will feel anger, sadness, pure adrenaline, defeat and then a sliver of hope (as fleeting as it maybe).

I am desperate for book 3 because these books literally occupy all of my attention.

Absolutely brilliant

The second book of the Faceless Chronicles series really didn't disappoint. Tense battles, magic, greater fiends that could destroy the world and characters with suspicious intentions what more could you want in an epic fantasy. It is very well written and the villains are terrifyingly detailed and designed. I can't wait to find out more of the story and this really was a perfect book to follow the first.

I received a free ARC copy of this book and I am leaving this review of my own free will.

This book starts immediately after Shapeshifter's Gambit - so I suggest you read that first. Both so you understand the depth of the characters and so you get the gut punch of the epic battle at the end of book one. The second book is where the character development really takes off. Pierce has a knack for a plot twist, which made this a great read.

Kalen has had a rough go of it. His betrothed is an evil bitch. He's stuck in a strange world with Elves. Things just don't seem that they could get much worse. Boy is he wrong! This novel is very well written, it drew me in and kept me reading.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I received an advance copy of this book. This is my honest, voluntary review.

Mister Pierce, you’ve done it again! Book 2 in The Faceless Chronicles is an absolute ride from start to finish. The action, tension, and emotional damage? Immaculate.

These characters continue to grow in such compelling ways, and the stakes feel bigger, darker, and far more personal this time around. But honestly, I love the torture, so I’ll absolutely be coming back for more. Grant Pierce has created a world that keeps pulling me in, and I already need the next book immediately.

Thank you to Grant for the arc opportunity!!

Oh man, so this is the sequel to "The Shapeshifter's Gambit", so make sure to read that first as this one picks up right where that one ends.

After reading two of Grant's novels, I can say without a doubt his ability for lore building and creating a fantastical world. His fight scenes, his character driven plots, and his ability to make the reader feel the emotions on page.

This one will keep you on edge just like the first, with an even faster pace and another cliffhanger that makes you anticipate the next book!
