A disgraced sorcerer running from his past. A young woman branded for illegal magic. In a city where sorcery is outlawed, Can they discover a place to belong?
When a rain-drenched stranger blows through the door of his flower shop and—quite literally—into his arms, something fearfully unexpected and utterly inconvenient occurs.
Nigel Grimm falls in love. At first sight.
But this is terrible! Nigel doesn’t deserve to fall in love! He was once a sorcerer of unmatched skill, consort of the Shadowbane Lady, and master of the dark arts. In his thirst for power, he drove the entire kingdom to the brink of famine.<
Now he lives a life of self-isolation, tending to the needs of a sentient garden and selling flowers. As far from the lure of sorcery as he can get.
But when he meets talented tea witch Luna Talbot, she’s starving, out of work, and in desperate need of assistance. What else is he supposed to do?
Naturally, he offers her a job.
Now Nigel’s life is filled with complications. First, he’d better learn how to brew a proper cup of tea if he wants to impress a discerning tea witch. Next, he’s got to drive off the dashing wardsman on the hunt for forbidden magic, who is showing particular interest in Luna. Finally, what about these phantom figures stalking the city streets at night? Are they somehow connected to Luna’s mysterious past?
Most importantly, can this former Dark Sorcerer find a way to protect his own fragile heart from the perils of unrequited love?
Hi, there. I'm Sylvia: cat-lover, tea-drinker, book-addict, and avid fan of the Kickbutt Heroine Fantasy Genre! If you like reading about tough heroines with extraordinary powers facing their demons and saving their loved ones . . . then we ought to be friends!
It’s ARC review time and to say I have a working playlist for this serial story is to imply how much I’m actually enjoying it!
Some deets about A Spot of Tea and Sorcery by @authorsylviamercedes :
A Spot of Tea and Sorcery is Vol 1 of a SIX volume serial, with a 1930s-inspired setting, but still a FANTASY world. Full of forbidden magic, high romance (low spice), and cozy quirks very much akin to The Office, Gilmore Girls, and Frasier.
Slow burn but sexy as hell let me tell you! From Chapter 1 there’s a so much adorable tension that I was blushing and kicking my feet under the covers. Nigel is a powerful dork, and I really enjoyed the way the character was crafted because he’s a gentleman with a dark side and that makes him 10 times hotter to me. Luna is a sweetheart with a whole lot of spunk, she has so much agency even after running onto some difficult times. Debbie, thankfully not Phoebe (inside ‘very funny’ joke), has the best timing for a raven sidekick, and now I need my own raven pet! All and all this is a great introduction to this story, and I’m already planning to collect the rest of the volumes in paperback because just look at how cute the art is! We have character art on the inside cover and chapter titles as well!
I was provided an ARC of this book via the author, all opinions are my own.
This was adorable. This follows a former dark sorcerer who has decided to change his evil ways and open a sweet and sensible flower shop. Nigel has moved to a small town where his type of magic is illegal, but green magic is allowed and he uses what he can to nurture his plants. Not one for gardening like his father, he does what he can for the plants and hopes to live a simple life selling flowers and staying out of anyone's dark plans.
Luna has been branded for use of illegal magic because some second cousin or other was involved in dark arts. Luna is a tea witch and has never done anything sinister in her life. She is breath of fresh air and the sunshine on a cloudy day, especially when it comes to Nigel Grimm. She literally blows through his door during a storm, and Nigel is quite enchanted with her even in her bedraggled state. She can tell there is something magical going on in the flower shop and is drawn to it despite her fears of getting caught up in sorcery. All is going well until she finds out about Nigel's past and an unruly tiger lily escapes its pot and things get interesting.
I loved this first installment of this serial. You can tell Nigel is already a goner for Luna, and I'm looking forward to their relationship developing. This was so fun and at times funny. I love serial novellas, and this one was cozy and magical. I loved that the flowers had some personality with a little bit of autonomy, but they were still flowers. Luna and Nigel are great characters. She is such a people person, willing to listen and solve any problem usually with a cup of tea. He is more reserved and introverted. If you are looking for a sweet, fun, cozy read go grab a cup of your favorite tea and give this a go.
I received a copy of this book from the author and am honored to share this completely honest review!
A warm hug, snuggling up with a soft blanket and a cup of tea, sitting in the sun on a warm day, these are the vibes A Spot of Tea and Sorcery by Sylvia Mercedes is giving me!
A Spot of Tea and Sorcery is an adorably cozy fantasy romance! I absolutely ate it up! This was a low stakes read and the perfect palette cleanser between darker and more intense books.
While a bit silly at times, I thought the plot was delightful and found myself wanting to read just one more chapter over and over again!
Nigel and Luna are a very entertaining pair and I'm excited to continue following along their journey as each volume of this story is released!
I'm especially excited to learn more about Nigel's sorcery, that side of him is very intriguing! 😏🤭
This just ended? Like this is only half of a book, not a full volume that continues plot lines on the next book. I wasn’t that invested, but I figured I would finish it and at least get some answers, but it ends in a way that you don’t get anything.
Sylvia Mercedes’s A Spot of Tea and Sorcery had me questioning my emotional stability because why am I this attached to a former dark sorcerer who absolutely loses all critical thinking skills the second he falls in love?? Published by FireWyrm Books—thank you to the publisher for the gifted copy.
This is the kind of cozy romantasy that doesn’t come in loud—it seeps in slowly, wraps around you, and before you realize it, you’re fully invested in the quiet chaos of a flower shop, a tea witch, and a man who is one polite conversation away from combusting over his feelings. Nigel Grimm is trying so hard to be reformed—like, “I almost destroyed a kingdom but now I arrange bouquets and mind my business” level of trying—and then Luna Talbot quite literally blows into his life during a storm and everything unravels in the softest, most emotionally inconvenient way.
And Luna? She’s sunshine with a backbone. Branded because of magic she didn’t choose, surviving in a world that’s already decided who she is, and still showing up with warmth, curiosity, and a quiet kind of courage that sneaks up on you. Watching her settle into Nigel’s shop—the Arcane Bouquet, which by the way is filled with plants that absolutely have opinions—felt like watching something broken start to breathe again. Their dynamic is everything: he’s reserved, haunted, and deeply in his head; she’s open, intuitive, and unintentionally dismantling his entire emotional defense system just by existing.
What made this hit wasn’t high-stakes drama—it was the feeling. The gentle pacing. The way the romance builds in the smallest moments: a shared cup of tea, a hesitant kindness, a glance that lingers just a second too long. Nigel is down catastrophically, and the best part is… he knows it. He’s just too emotionally repressed and morally conflicted to do anything about it without spiraling internally first. It’s painful. It’s hilarious. It’s weirdly comforting.
And can we talk about the garden?? Because the sentient flowers were not just a quirky detail—they were full personalities. Chaotic, dramatic, occasionally unhinged, and somehow adding both humor and heart to the story. I didn’t expect to care about a tiger lily causing problems, and yet here we are.
“My, my! For such a scrawny, ill-favored little creature, you’ve got quite the romance in store for you.”
This is slow-burn in its purest form—no spice, just longing, tension, and emotional restraint that makes every tiny moment feel significant. If you love stories where the romance simmers instead of explodes, where the magic feels lived-in and a little whimsical, and where the characters are healing just as much as they’re falling in love, this will absolutely land for you. It’s giving cozy with a side of yearning, light with an undercurrent of something deeper still unfolding.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It’s the kind of read that feels like a soft place to land after a long day, but still leaves you curious about what’s lurking beneath the surface—because there are shadows here, hints of past mistakes, and just enough mystery to keep the pages turning.
So tell me—are you picking this up for the cozy vibes… or are you staying for the emotionally repressed sorcerer who is one cup of tea away from confessing everything? ☕✨
Gut rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ CAWPILE rating: TBD Spice: Flirting ARC publication date: April 10th 2026
Tropes: Second chance at life, flower shop setting, reformed villain, meet cute, he falls first, instalove, dual POV
Quote: When she smiled Nigel’s way, it was such a sunbeam bursting through the gloom of this gods-forsaken day, the cockles of his cold heart unexpectedly warmed. He’d not realized he had cockles anymore.
My synopsis Running from his past as the villainous Dark Sorcerer, Nigel Grimm flees to the obscurity of the bustling Kingdom of Brython with his raven familiar and starts a new life as a florist. But not even his botanical telepathy can tempt visitors inside his dreary store. Until a thunderstorm drags in the outcast tea witch Luna Talbot, and Nigel finds his whole world lighting up again.
My review A sweet and cosy story with charming characters and an addictive plot that has me itching for the next volume!
What I liked - It was so interesting to come into the plot after all the action to see the tainted hero's attempt at fading into obscurity. The world's history was really well explained in the short space too. - I immediately loved the bumbling Nigel and his attempt at starting over from his villainous past. I really liked seeing hints of his caring side with him helping egotistical flowers get along, too. - Luna was the perfect pairing of bubbly and sunshine, and I liked her courage and strength in pushing through the ostracism she's facing. - Nigel and Luna's meet-cute was so fun! A retired dark sorcerer felled by one look from a shivering lady? Yes please!
What I didn't like - The story was very short and felt more like excerpts from a book rather than a story in its own right.
With thanks to the author for providing me with this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Trigger warnings: Xenophobia (women sorcerers), death, murder, mental illness (depression), death of parent, sexism, animal death (sentient flowers), sexual harassment, alcohol
This story is as sweet as the perfect dash honey in a spicy orange blossom tea! Perfection. Sylvia Mercedes has done in again.
Luna and Nigel’s meet cute is the stuff of Rom-com legends. The banter is bantering, the scenes are scintillating, and this episodic rapid-release novel sequence has me waiting for the next installment with bated breath.
Luna is a Tea Witch who has fallen on hard times, marked as a potential sorcerer. When she runs (literally) into a retired Dark Sorcerer with a closet filled with secrets, chaos and coziness ensue.
If you enjoy: •dual POV •sunshine heroines •morally gray mmc •employer/employee •plant (animal?) sidekicks •immersive magical setting •sweet, cozy romance
Then you will love A Spot of Tea and Sorcery. The perfect pick-me-up for T. S. Eliot’s promised “cruelest month” of April. Spring calls for a small dose of whimsy, and A Spot of Tea and Sorcery is serving up whimsy like it’s going out of style.
4.5 stars Set in a whimsical, slightly vintage-feeling world, this story follows a broody, reputation-haunted sorcerer and a sunshiney tea witch who quite literally tumbles into his life and turns it upside down (in the best way). Watching Nigel try and fail to act normal around Luna had me giggling. He is so gone for her and completely helpless about it. The vibes are peak cosy: a charming little shop, enchanted plants with personalities, and a cast of delightfully eccentric side characters. The romance is soft and slow-burn, quietly blooming in the background while hints of darker secrets start to creep in. Can't wait to see how the series continues.
If you love whimsical magic and stories that feel like sipping your favorite tea on a rainy day, this one is a treat.
This was a quick cozy read. I liked the idea of the plants being mildly sentient and Nigel (MMC) trying to make them happy. Luna is a sweet FMC who adds a little charm to the shop and her Tea Witch skills bring in the customers. Both of them have secrets that I’m sure over the coarse of the series will slowly be revealed. Ended with Luna helping Nigel in a big way.
it is a lovely cozy feel good story and I enjoyed the world it is in and the magic
the reason for the 2 stars is simply that it took me a while to connect with the book and the characters and I found the pacing a bit tough just for myself and was a bit stumped by the ending in it. Now that said I did already move on to book 2 and the pace and story line is already more like what I was hoping for so I will definitely continue reading this series and enjoy it ❤️
This was a DNF for me. I got maybe 33% of the way in. I wanted to like this book so badly. The premise was interesting and there were crumbs of promising things in those first few chapters. However, far too much time was spent talking about how beautiful the fmc is. I got the idea after the first paragraph, but it was a lot. The scene where the man (not mmc) buys her flowers because she is so pretty would've hit better if mmc hadn't taken forever to describe how pretty she is. There seems to be more to her, but they spend so long on her looks and going back to her looks I just stopped caring. Maybe reading on Kindle skewed my perspective on how long things were taking, I don't know.
A Spot of Tea and Sorcery is a fun, cozy fantasy novella with a very abrupt ending! The way it ended mid-story, with an abundance of plotlines hanging, made it feel less like a novella and more like an unfinished Vella serial.
I liked the characters and storyline quite a bit. The sentient plants, magic and dynamic between the MCs was great. Definitely not a fan of the unexpectedly abrupt ending and lack of wrap up with regard to story threads. It's not like it's a cliff hanger either. It just ends. So odd.
Thank you so much to author Sylvia Mercedes for an advanced copy of A Spot of Tea and Sorcery! ☕️🤍
What an absolutely lovely book this was! Nigel, who used to be a master of the dark arts, is now a florist for the Arcane Bouquet and our sweet Luna, a tea witch, is his new employee. The INSTANT yearning from Nigel is so swoon worthy you’ll be immediately hooked. 🥰
A Spot of Tea and Sorcery will be a total of 5 volumes (yay!!) and filled with forbidden magic, low/no spice but lots of romance, 1930s vibes and lots and lots of tea and plants. 🪴☕️
It’s a very cute story. Funny how I found this after finishing Divine Rivals. The setting is similar, which I found intriguing ❤️ if you need an in between this is pretty cool.
It’s definitely a slow burn. The whole book was pretty much introducing the characters. Both to us and to each other. Loved the flower shop! I enjoy tea, mostly Earl Gray, but not really to the point of hearing them all described 😆
Spoilers mixed in here:
We don’t know much about Luna. She’s a tea witch. Something happed which caused her to run away with a mark. Because of it she’s like a hair away of living on the streets. She meets Nigel early in the story, like the beginning, super meet cute. Being honest, Iiiiiiiii kinda don’t like her? It’s just she seems to be taking over his shop. Not really helping him but bringing to life her own thing. She’s also a little dense. Nigel, on the their first meet, lets her use his bathroom, robe, and sets up a line to dry her clothes. She goes to change out of his robe and takes a shower without asking? He even offers her a job to start the next day. He shares his meals, is literally putting her first and she’s like “he’s just a boss” “a gentlemen”. Like girl be for real. No dude pretty much hands you his secret garden, gifts you stuff and over all changes his business just to be a gentleman! Especially within a the two days of meeting you! Also! Putting wards up out of jealousy! She literally comes off as a taker. At least in my opinion.
The story seems to be more from the Male leads perspective. Nigel is smitten. He indulges Luna with everything! Except his deepest secret. Other than that he turned his flower shop into a tea reading shop for her. All within the first few days! If she leaves, for whatever reason, his flower shop will be out of business. Luna said it! If she has to run off. It’s obvious she’s not even sure if she would stay. If she was really there to be an employee she would help him with HIS business. She’s pushy. He’s a push over. She has good ideas, like the displays and aprons. But She said it in the epilogue for book 2. She was happy to finally use HER ideas and be appreciated for them. Girl it’s not your business! And Nigel has hearts for pupils.
I love slow burns but this is snail pace. I love the he falls first from moment one but who is Nigel? I don’t mean about his past, I mean who is he now? He seems like he is changing everything around him. He’s not completely blinded by love, there was a an inner logical monologue buuuuut he just goes with what Luna wants. Luna: tables for the customers to enjoy tea while they wait! Nigel: but it’s a flower shop? Luna: goes quite then oh yes of course! It’s a flower shop Nigel: gets tables…..😑
Is it guilt? I’m just trying to understand the characters. Given what we know of Nigels past so far.
I know my review comes off as negative but none of what I wrote is a deal breaker. The writing is really good, the story itself is intriguing. I liked the world build but really I like the animated magical flowers. I could be too old to enjoy it as it should be 😆I’ll pick up the next one soon ❤️
🫖 This one is about Nigel, who runs a flower shop now, but in the past he was a very naughty dark sorcerer who nearly doomed the entire kingdom (…there was a woman...). Now, magic has been outlawed. Having come to his senses and feeling appropriately bad about the whole thing, Nigel is trying to fly under the radar… that is, until Luna, a witch who is also trying to lay low, crashes into his life (and into his shop). Nigel is immediately smitten, but does he want to risk loving again when it can lead to such horrible consequences as almost destroying a kingdom? Not that Luna could EVER return his feelings, right? 💜
🫖 ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? A 30s-vibe cozy romantasy about a (recovering) Dark Sorcerer who falls hopelessly in love with a runaway tea witch, told in six easily digestible instalments? Was this series written specifically for me? It felt like it, lol. It honestly had everything that makes me so happy I could cry. Also the idea that tea fixes 90% of life’s problems is very on brand for me 😆. Nigel is a tortured sweetie pie who used to be a Bad Guy™️ but now he’s turning over a new leaf and trying really hard to help Luna, who is in a bad spot. The storytelling was so sweet and perfect, it honestly feels so effortless and flowy, as if Sylvia Mercedes conjures up words with a magic wand and lays them on the page with a flourish. I just devour anything that she writes! This one is lower spice, more yearning, and so engaging! Next one releases in May! 💜
🫖 Thank you so much to Luna Blooms and the author for the ARC! I was lucky enough to receive a physical copy and it’s just beautiful. I can’t wait for the rest of the series!! All opinions are my own. 💜
🫖 I paired this book with Chamomile-Lavender herbal tea from Celestial Seasonings because that’s how Luna’s scent is described and it’s one of my absolute favourite tea flavours! There’s a lot of tea in this book and I’m so excited to pair more teas with the coming books!
❓QotD: Do you have a favourite tea? Or what’s your go-to drink order (can be anything)?
Blurb info: “A SPOT OF TEA AND SORCERY is a serialized novel in six volumes, written to bring you the romantic yearning of THE OFFICE, the cozy quirkiness of GILMORE GIRLS, with just a dash of Agatha Christie vibes to keep it interesting, all wrapped in a magical ribbon of pure fantasy.
If you’re ready to watch a former dark sorcerer fall desperately, hopelessly, irrevocably in love and have no idea what to DO about it . . . this is the new, low spice/high romance, bingeable obsession for you!
Scheduled for rapid-release this spring and summer! Book 1 launches in April, with the final volume dropping in August.”
Cozy fantasy romance featuring a reformed dark sorcerer and a tea witch. Yes please!
3/15/26: Just got an ARC. Can't wait to start!
3/18/26: Well, that was a delightful little cozy fantasy romance series starter!
Just as the title promises, there is tea and a bit of sorcery. There is also a great deal of whimsy, which I'm finding I enjoy more and more as I've hit my 40s. The world is a dark enough place with human trafficking, war, extreme politicism, and tyrannical homeowner's associations. Thus, I find more often than not when I read, I'd rather indulge in whimsy, fantastical worlds, and happy endings. A Spot of Tea and Sorcery hits this niche dead on.
The characters were right up my alley - recovering dark sorcerer, Nigel Grimm, was awkwardly adorable and brainy; Luna Talbot, the tea witch whose life has been made far more difficult because of public feeling regarding those with sorcerous origins, was sweetly winsome. I've always been a fan of quirky animal friends/familiars, so I was thrilled to see a slightly grumpy raven named Debbie helping fill out the cast. Additionally, I loved the introduction of Garden, as well as the very specific personalities of each of the flowers within the The Arcane Bouquet.
The plot itself seems to be a fun one ... primarily the romance of our main characters against the backdrop of a Nigel's past association with a dark sorceress, who was aiming for immortality and world domination before his intervention. That event was the catalyst for the marking of witches from sorcerous families and the cause of Luna's financial difficulties. It will be a great deal of fun to see how the author continues to build this world and the relationship between her protagonists, and I'm happy to be along for the ride.
SIDE NOTE: There was a scene in which Luna keeps trying out various teas on Nigel to discover what his particular favorite is. I was delighted to see a mention of a chamomile & lavender brew, as it happened to be the very same tea I was drinking at the same time.
𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 & 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨: This book has cozy, rainy-day, academia, witchy vibes. Think warm tea, magical plants, and a little bit of whimsy. 🌿☕ If you are looking for something soft, cozy, and comforting, you would probably enjoy this series.
𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙: ❥ The plants had so much personality and were honestly the cutest part of the story.
❥ I loved the tea witch themes. Drying plants, blending teas, and all the cozy little details made the world feel so comforting.
❥ The atmosphere was definitely the strongest part of the book. It feels like the kind of story you read while it's raining outside. ☔️
𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄 𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚: 3/4 of the way through, something weird happens with the story flow, where it jumps from volume 1 to a novella? I found this confusing. Up to that point I was really enjoying the story, but then it switched to a more narrative writing style.
❥ Is it just me, or did anyone else not want them to sell the plants? I wanted to protect them instead of sending them out to die 🥺
𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙄 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨? No...I enjoyed the cozy vibes more than the actual story. It felt more like an experience than romance or plot-driven, and I personally needed a little more from the story to stay invested.
This is the coziest, most delightfully whimsical story!! It's very different from the author's previous works, but at its heart it's still the low-spice, epically slow burn romance that I love!
Nigel Grimm is a non-practicing sorcerer of ill repute, hiding from his past and attempting to reinvent himself as the son his father always wanted. This is how he came to open his flower shop: The Arcane Bouquet. He's uptight and proper, yet clumsily falls all over himself in front of....
Luna Talbot, tea witch! She's fun, cheerful and quirky with a past of her own that we don't know about just yet. I can't wait to find out more about her past though! She has a magnetic personality that immediately charms everyone around her, although she doesn't have quite the level of tea-witchery that her Aunties do. She's imperfectly perfect and just delightfully written.
We also have some ridiculously fun side characters, including the flowers that each have their own personalities. And Debbie!!! Honestly all of these characters are eccentrically endearing.
This book reads like it's written in a flowery script, it's very Jane Austen-esque and I LOVED the extra emphasis on the societally-important words. It just made it extra fun to read!
I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of this book! It doesn't affect my review in any way, I just really love this author's style!
A Spot of Tea and Sorcery feels like stepping into a lantern-lit cottage after wandering through a storm. It’s soft, magical, and deeply comforting — but underneath the cozy atmosphere is a story about loneliness, healing, and finding a place where you’re finally allowed to exist without fear.
The strongest part of the book is the atmosphere. Sylvia Mercedes creates this dreamy, almost glowing world where tea-making feels sacred and magic feels intimate rather than explosive. The writing wraps around you slowly. It’s not a fast-paced fantasy driven by huge battles or complicated politics; it’s emotional immersion. The kind of story you sink into rather than race through.
The cozy elements work beautifully:
* warm kitchens * enchanted spaces * gentle magic * quiet companionship * moments of stillness that actually matter
But what gives the story weight is the emotional undercurrent. There’s this persistent feeling of yearning throughout the novel — characters carrying exhaustion, grief, uncertainty, or the desire to belong somewhere. That’s what makes it linger after finishing. The softness never feels empty.
The romance is tender rather than dramatic. It grows through safety, trust, and small interactions, which fits the tone of the novel perfectly. If you enjoy romantasy that prioritizes emotional intimacy over intensity, this hits the mark.
What may not work for every reader:
* the pacing is intentionally slow * the plot is quieter and more character-focused * readers wanting high stakes or action-heavy fantasy may find it too gentle
But if you love cozy fantasy with emotional depth, this book excels at creating a feeling. And honestly, that’s why it sticks in your head — it’s less about remembering every plot point and more about remembering how the story made you feel.
It’s the literary equivalent of:
* drinking tea while rain taps against windows * soft candlelight * healing after surviving something difficult * magic that feels comforting instead of dangerous
For readers who enjoy atmosphere-heavy fantasy, emotionally tender characters, and magical coziness, this is an easy recommendation.
Luna ran away from home but the reader doesn’t know why. Nigel is an enigma with hints at an ignoble past involving sorcery.
Nigel is immediately smitten with Luna when she bursts into his flower shop looking like a drowned rat. Luna is dismayed when she reads Nigel’s tea leaves and determines that she must be mistaken. He offers her employment and allows her much leeway in rearranging his shop. He even reveals the secret of Garden almost immediately.
The setting reminds me of the Regency era as everyone is painstakingly polite. The Ton* (fashionable high society of British aristocracy) applies to the “silly” young women who flock to Nigel’s flower shop for tea readings by Luna.
Nigel is quietly jealous of any man who pays attention to Luna. A Ward (think police officer) and a member of the aristocracy both show interest. Nigel would like nothing better than to wield a forbidden sorcerous curse to eliminate any competition.
Nigel and Luna hit a few rough spots in their professional relationship and it seems that he does most, if not all, of the compromising. This book ends with him reassured that she will return the following day after yet another mishap.
This was such a charming read. It follows a former dark sorcerer who’s left his old life behind to run a quiet little flower shop. Nigel now lives in a town where his kind of magic is forbidden, but plant magic is allowed, so he uses that to help his flowers grow while trying to keep his life simple and drama-free.
Luna has been unfairly branded for illegal magic because of a distant relative, even though she’s just a kind-hearted tea witch. She’s warm, bright, and a total contrast to Nigel. When she quite literally blows into his shop during a storm, he’s instantly drawn to her. Luna can sense something magical about the shop and feels pulled toward it, even though she knows she should be cautious. Things get interesting when she learns about Nigel’s past—and when a very unruly tiger lily causes some chaos.
I really enjoyed this first installment. It’s cosy, magical, and fun, with a hint of humour. Nigel and Luna balance each other well, and I’m excited to see their relationship grow. If you’re after a sweet, easy read, this is definitely worth picking up—preferably with a cup of tea.
Thanks to Luna Blooms for the opportunity to read this as an arc.
This book was so fun to read! It is a mixture and balance of dark with light moments. Nigel is a sorcerer trying to escape his past and change his ways. But one windy night, a burst of sunshine and fate literally knocks him off his feet and takes the breath from his lungs.
Luna tumbles into Nigel's new flower shop and is finally able to caught a break with being his assistant after many years of being branded (literally) as a sorceress. So when she discovers that Nigel is a sorcerer, Luna needs to make a decision: will she let this new home go and start over again. Or can she believe that Nigel can really change his ways?
This book is not necessarily a cliff hanger but there are a lot of questions unanswered as it is a series of volumes ahead. Both Nigel and Luna have backgrounds that are slowly unraveling as well as a shadowy presence that could be following Nigel or Luna.
I am so excited for the next volume! Although I loved this book, be advised it has some slight spice in thoughts or talk of some of the characters. There are curses, like A-word.
This book completely pulled me in with its whimsical charm and lovable, slightly chaotic characters—I genuinely felt like I was part of the story. It’s a sweet, delicious slow burn with just the right blend of spice woven throughout.
If you love down-on-their-luck characters with magic in their veins and the quirkiest personalities, you are in for a sumptuous treat. I so enjoyed this new twist from Sylvia Mercedes. It feels cozy and comforting while still being totally fresh and unique.
And don’t even get me started on the supporting characters… the (unfortunately named) raven sidekick had me laughing out loud, and the landlady? ICONIC. Every interaction added another layer of charm and chaos in the best way.
But the real magic? The enchanted garden. Flowers with their own personalities?? I was absolutely enchanted. It’s whimsical, imaginative, and just pure joy on the page.
This story is such a perfect blend of light and dark, with a soft, heartwarming romance that blooms so beautifully you can’t help but swoon.
whimsical romantasy with 1930s vibes. This series is set for a rapid release with all 6 books releasing by August. Volume 1 released today and is available on KU!
This is such a cozy story. It is told in a dual POV by our MCs Nigel and Luna. Nigel is an ex-socercer who recently opened a flower shop, The Arcane Bouquet. He is very studious and quiet. During a downpour, Luna enters the shop to get out of the rain and Nigel is definitely smitten, too the pint he offers her a job. Luna and Nigel were so cute together. Luna is very quirky and outgoing and really helped Nigel to branch out. She also helps his shop to grow and flourish.
I love the Garden and all the different flowers and their personalities. Some would growl while others were plan mischievous. Also Debbie, the raven. Was a delightful edition. "Never Mind."
I quickly fell in love with the quirky nature of Grimm and his little shop.
I absolutely love Sylvia’s writing and the flow of her stories. This new series is not like her previously released books at all. It has a completely different pace, vibe and setting and I’m blown away by it. Sweet, whimsical but with the barest hint of tension slowly building as the story progresses where you just know the climax of the series’s plot is going to be epic.
I loved the sassy flowers, especially the tiger lilies and the wild adventure it takes them on. And the double-delight rose in all her glory.
It was like Alice in Wonderland mixed with Harry Potter set in a Studio Ghibli movie. I had such vivid pictures in my mind as it unfolded.
Can’t wait for the next book!
A m/f cozy fantasy with whimsy, sassy botany, magic, tea and a cast of characters that leave you smiling the whole time you’re reading. Plus the picture of the characters in the front of the book was spot on.
Main characters - Nigel Grimm Luna Talbot
Steam - clean and the beginning of a slow sweet burn
This book is the literary equivalent of a warm hug on a rainy afternoon, which funny enough is how it starts. This is a refreshingly a low stakes romantasy, almost slice of life vibe, it serves as the perfect palette cleanser the tension centers on charmingly domestic hurdles like whether a retired dark sorcerer can brew a proper cup of tea or if a sentient tiger lily will stay in its pot rather than world ending threats, learning to fight sequences and a broody MMC. The dynamic between the emotionally repressed Nigel Grimm and the sunshine tea witch Luna Talbot is sweet, fueled by a slow burn chemistry that makes their every interaction a delight. The way the author can write ROMANTIC yearning, with little overtly high chili vibes is a delight. And this is coming from someone who loves a good 6 chili book.
I look forward to the whole series coming out ( all book in the next 6 months, score!) and honestly am hoping for a good SE I can pass down as a first romance for my kids when they are older.
This is the first of six volumes in The Spot of Tea and Sorcery series, and it was a charming, quick, and breezy read, swirling with magic.
We are introduced to Nigel Grimm, a disgraced dark sorcerer, who now runs a flower shop. In a blustery storm, Luna Talbot bursts in, rain-soaked, and Nigel is smitten. Luna is a tea witch, but she’s been branded for illegal magic, and she needs a job. The two make quite a pair; they are adorable but slightly nerdy in a cozy-cottage way.
Luna loves working at the flower shop for Nigel, but senses something is amiss, some sort of sorcery is crackling in the air. She can’t be caught around magic.
This was a delightful setup for the series. You’ll discover forbidden magic, sentient plants, a raven named Debbie, a phantom lurking, and other little fairy-like beings up to hijinks. I’m very interested to know more about Nigel’s backstory with his sorcery and see what happens between this blossoming romance with Luna.
Thank you @lunablooms.pa and @authorsylviamercedes for this gifted book.
Title: A Spot of Tea and Sorcery, Vol. 1 Author: Sylvia Mercedes Publisher: Self-Published / Indie Pub Day: April 10, 2025 Thanks to Sylvia (@lunablooms.pa) for my early copy of this book 🫶
💭 My Bookish Thoughts A former dark sorcerer lying low in a flower shop. A tea witch branded for illegal magic who needs a job. One rainstorm that changes everything. 🫖✨
Nigel Grimm is so completely, helplessly gone for Luna from the moment she tumbles through his door and it is the most delightful thing I have read in ages. He tries so hard to act normal. He fails so spectacularly. I was kicking my feet the entire time. The world is cozy 1930s fantasy with magic outlawed, enchanted plants with opinions, a raven named Debbie, and just enough shadowy mystery creeping in at the edges to keep you hooked. The slow burn is soft and quiet and absolutely going to wreck me by the end of this series. Already counting down to Vol. 2. On May 10, 2026
