Halley has always had darker desires, but they were just fantasies she only ever let herself explore in the pages of her favorite dark romance books. Things she could never dream of asking for.
Until a joking conversation with Knox, her brother’s charismatic and down-to-earth best friend, takes a decidedly naughty turn. Halley's secret desires are exposed, and Knox is hungry to learn more.
Because he’s been hiding a fantasy of his own. But for Knox, it’s always been about Halley. Little does she know, he's become obsessive about taking away her control... and now he doesn't have to hide it anymore.
So an arrangement is made.
Halley doesn't know when. And she doesn't know how. But sometime in the near future, Knox is going to take her by surprise in a terrifying yet satisfying way.
She asked for this. But she should've known Knox never does anything halfway.
I have read enough dark spicy shit for this to be a joke when the MMC constantly claims he is sick, demented or a monster for fantasising about non-con.
Hot spice, vivid characters... I could have read another 300 pages of dark, cozy romance.
Most of the time, I have one of two feelings about novellas: if it’s paced well, I enjoy it for exactly what it is; if it isn’t paced well, I think about what could have been added or changed to make it work a little better. Novella pacing is a complicated, delicate balance, and I celebrate anyone even trying to write a full story in a short space.
You Asked For This has given me a third feeling: even with pitch-perfect pacing, I am hungry for more.
Crowe has crafted a story that does everything it needs to do. The characters are well-established. The chemistry is balanced between simmering, sweet, and explosive. The plot is tight, snappy, and face-fanningly hot. And yet… I wanted more. I still want more. I have become a greedy reader, staring at an open-ended conclusion and waiting for more words to magically appear. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. I wasn’t ready to put it down. I turned the final page and was jump-scared by the acknowledgements, because somewhere around the 70% mark I stopped being aware of how far into the book I was and was just reading voraciously. I would read an entire cozy novel series about Knox and Hallie’s relationship, the Rutherford family, and the tribulations of Adrian’s new career move—and I am not someone who typically enjoys “cozy”.
And this, while being a dark romance with some very rough smut, is truly a cozy romance. I’m not sure if “dark, cozy romance” is an established genre yet—if it isn’t, Crowe is a pioneer.
I could sincerely spend an hour writing about YAFT. Knox and Hallie are both incredibly well-formed characters with depth, history, flaws, and brilliance. Their connection is gorgeous to read, from the low heat of their initial banter to the rolling boil of Knox’s determination to make the fear real for her. Knox does EVERYTHING right (on the page; his history is a little less ideal), and his personality is so solidly established that his perfect choices don’t make him seem unrealistic. Hallie’s darkness and desires are seemingly at odds with her upbringing and family, but she’s incredibly relatable to me for exactly that reason: she’s literally just wired this way, and the way Crowe handles that made me feel incredibly seen and understood. Hallie is truly one of us: not traumatized or conditioned by pain, but enthralled by it anyway.
Crowe filled this novella with history, family connections, and backstory details without rushing the plot. She built an entire family with quirks, unique personalities, and interwoven history in less than 150 pages, when I think at least half those pages were smut. I’m not entirely sure how she did it, but I was curious about every single member of the Rutherford family and none of them felt unnecessary or underdeveloped.
I could talk more about the spice (because wow. WOW.). I could talk more about Knox’s complicated emotions, how he manages them, and how it all comes to light (because W. O. W.). I could talk more about Hallie’s less-than-wise decision-making and how incredibly perfect it is. I could talk more about the Rutherfords and how much about the dynamic between them all is shared in such a short time.
I could talk more about this book, but I’ve already written far too many more words than I needed to get my point across.
There’s something deliciously addictive about a story built on years of tension, forbidden feelings, and the one person you were never supposed to want. You Asked For This delivers exactly that, and then turns the heat all the way up.
Hallie has spent her life being seen as nothing more than Adrian’s little sister, but she’s far more aware of herself and Knox than anyone realizes. One slip of the tongue, one charged moment, and suddenly the lines that kept them apart begin to blur. What follows is an intense, seductive unraveling of two people who have wanted each other far longer than either of them is willing to admit.
At the heart of this book is the dynamic between Hallie and Knox. Their chemistry is immediate, magnetic, and impossible to ignore. But this isn’t just surface-level attraction. Beneath every heated glance and reckless touch is a pair of people quietly carrying their own damage, fears, and insecurities. They don’t just challenge each other, they expose each other. Through every push and pull, they begin to realize they may be exactly what the other has been missing.
And let’s be honest: if you came for the spice, you will absolutely be fed. This book does not waste time. The heat starts early, builds steadily, and only grows bolder, darker, and more daring as the story unfolds. It’s confident, unapologetic, and guaranteed to have you checking over your shoulder if you’re reading in public. Definitely not one to casually open on your lunch break unless you enjoy living dangerously. 👀🔥
What makes the story stand out, though, is that the steam never overshadows the emotional core. The tension works because the feelings underneath it feel real. Hallie’s desire to finally be seen for who she is and Knox’s struggle with what he wants versus what he thinks he deserves create a satisfying emotional depth that keeps you invested beyond the bedroom scenes.
Katey Crowe knows exactly what readers of this genre are looking for and delivers a fast-paced, addictive romance packed with longing, possession, vulnerability, and enough heat to leave your Kindle smoking. If you love forbidden romance, messy emotions, explosive chemistry, and characters who are as broken as they are irresistible, this one deserves a spot on your TBR.
The brothers best friend trope is one of my favorites. I was thoroughly surprised at the level of dark this was headed. I still think I need more of Knox's dark energy. This was really going somewhere and maybe I am just too messed up in the head 😅 but I think it could be even darker. Knox had the potential to be the morally pitch black MMC that his monster was trying to unleash. And Hallie was the perfect sub. I enjoyed the forbidden love that this gave between Knox and Hallie because her brother Adrian was Knox's best friend. AND he grew up with them from childhood so the Rutherford family was like Knox's second home.
I cannot wait to read book 2 and get more of The Rutherfords storyline.
I read a CNC gone wrong rom com last month so when I saw this CNC novella I was intrigued… definitely darker themes so please check all your warnings.
I think it was to be expected in a positive way. It feels weird to say it was enjoyable, but I did find myself completely invested in how these two weeks went. There isn’t a ton of depth since it’s a quick novella, but you did get a bit of history and some edging around family that isn’t supposed to find out.
I’m not one to yuck someone’s yum so the fact that it was laid out to be truly CNC made it work just fine in my head. If someone is looking for a quick 🔥🔥🔥 darker read, definitely include this on your list.
Started this book yesterday evening could not put it down such an amazing easy read! I was on Threads one day it popped up and I was like this looks good. They say not to judge a book by his cover, but what’s not to love about this cover? The CNC in this book was amazing. The ending definitely wasn’t expecting that but turned out amazing. I could’ve read another 15 chapters of this. I loved it great work great writing such an amazing book.
This was fantastic. The spice was on fire, the characters were awesome, and everything was just great. My issue? I want more 😆 Awesome, will read again. 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
quick read roughly 100+ pages. I love the dynamic and the trust between the main characters but they've known each other for years so it was easy and were able to live out their dark fantasy without judgement.
