Jess is on the trail of the ruthless killer, Bill Hangston, who is wanted dead or alive for the heinous crimes of murder and rape of a young woman who had two young children. On his way to Wooster, Texas, he runs into some of Rudy Stalling’s men and one of them, Earl Lancaster, accidentally implies that Hangston works for Mr. Stalling. Jess tells Lancaster that if Hangston doesn’t come to Wooster to meet his fate, he’d come out to Stalling’s place and kill him and whoever got in his way.
Rudy Stalling gives Hangston two choices. Either turn himself into the law in Wooster, or make a run for it. Hangston strangely decides to turn himself into the law, knowing Jess’s reputation. After Hangston breaks out of jail, with the help of two of Rudy Stalling’s lead men, Jess goes after Hangston, but Stalling wants him to take Lancaster with him to make sure he finds out who helped Hangston break out of jail. Jess, having his reasons, allows Lancaster to accompany him. Meanwhile, the rustlers who have been stealing Stalling’s cattle are identified during a gunfight between Stalling’s men and the McLowrey brothers and their gang of thieves. Stalling hires Jess to hunt down the McLowrey brothers and Lancaster, who never seemed to fit in as a hired gun, agrees to go along with Jess on the hunt.
During the chase, Lancaster slowly begins to change his ways and tries to find redemption for himself, vowing never to hire his gun out again. Jess doesn’t entirely trust him and doesn’t believe he can redeem himself.
The hunt for the McLowrey brothers turns out to be a bloody and dangerous one with a trail of bodies left along the way. They've taken over the town of Ferguson, Texas, and Jess has to find a way to get to them without harming any of the innocent townsfolk living there.

In 1990 Robert J. Thomas was sworn in as the full time mayor for the city of Westland, Michigan. He served twelve years, making him the longest serving mayor in Westland's history.
While he was mayor he wrote his first book titled, How to Run for Local Office, which has now sold over 25,000 copies worldwide.
He has written and published on Kindle, the Jess Williams Westerns series. Retired, he now lives in Mississippi with his wfe Jill.
Jess always turns someone from a bad way,who wants a ranch, wife and kids. Good luck Jess . You are a pretty nice guy.Maybe thats why I'm looking for number 37.
I liked the story a lot. I would recommend it to anyone who likes western or a well written book. The thing I didn't like was the overuse of the words " wittily smiled" . The word witty has no place in this book unless there is a very humorous scene in it. There are a lot of other adjectives that can be applied here but not witty. Other than that this was an excellent book. Thanks
Another winner by Robert J. Thomas! I have read all 37 books in the Jesse Williams series and have found that if you start at book one the story is much more interesting as book one has the answers to the questions you will have. The story starts out as to how Jesse came to have the unusual pistol that gives him the ability to draw and shoot faster and with absolute accuracy than is possible in that point in time.
for but I OWN all 36 books of the jess williams series I used to be a great reader of Zane Grey it as long as Robert J Thomas continues to write the Jess Williams series I will never read a book written any one else.
Teaming Jess up with other men makes a more interesting story. This time Jess is following brothers, but end up in a nest of murderers, liars, and thieves. Time for a bunch (or more) of dynamite and a good strategy.
Very entertaining with a lot of action. There's always a lot going on in Jess' world and this was no exception. Lancaster, the guy riding with him, added a lot of humor to the story.
