A covert operative is murdered on the streets of Tokyo, hunted down by a masked assassin and silenced before he can expose what he’s stolen.
With his final breath, he delivers a message that crosses Get Jack Morgan.
Private detective Morgan arrives in Tokyo to find a city on edge.
As the investigation unleashes a chain of deadly events, it’s clear he’s stepped into something far bigger – and far more dangerous – than a single killing.

This was only just ok. I've enjoyed the series, but I find myself becoming increasingly frustrated because there's unfinished business between Jack and his twin brother, Tommy, whom the writers appear to have forgotten. I've been waiting and waiting for a final confrontation that looks like it won't happen. This book was just a Snickers bar compared to my more refined reading tastes.
A paper thin story line expanded to fill 300+ pages by stitching together apparently unconnected pieces of adventure, attempted murder, murder, kidnapping. Random events with no fruitful outcomes keep happening till the author decides that the book needs to end. At that time the narrative becomes a little coherent and leads the reader to its somewhat predictable end.
These stories are always action packed, but this one didn’t quite work for me - too many times, the hero did a dumb thing leading to some very well written action sequences, but he is supposed to be an amazing detective, who should not get into such a situation.
The plot seemed unnecessary to the book, and was polished off in 2 pages
Sweeping readers from the familiar territory of the Private series into the vibrant and unpredictable streets of Tokyo, this latest adventure sees Jack Morgan facing another high-stakes mystery with potentially far-reaching consequences. When a covert operative is murdered by a masked assassin, a chain of dangerous events is set in motion, raising an intriguing question: what could have been stolen that was important enough to kill for?
As readers have come to expect from this long-running series, the novel delivers all the key ingredients that have made it such a success. The Tokyo setting provides an engaging backdrop, adding atmosphere and freshness to the story while complementing the fast-paced narrative. The plot is packed with twists, action, and suspense, ensuring there is rarely a quiet moment as Jack Morgan and his team race to uncover the truth.
The return of Justine, Sci, and Mo-bot further strengthens the novel, with the core cast remaining one of the series’ greatest assets. Their relationships, personalities, and teamwork continue to provide an emotional anchor amid the chaos, making them every bit as compelling as the characters found across James Patterson’s many successful franchises.
There is genuine danger throughout the story, and on more than one occasion the direction of the plot remains difficult to predict. While the conclusion perhaps feels a little too neat in places, it is handled with enough poignancy and emotional weight to remain satisfying. Ultimately, that minor criticism barely registers against what is otherwise an excellent and highly enjoyable thriller. For me, this remains Patterson’s strongest series, and this latest instalment only reinforces that view.
A really enjoyable read from start to finish. The story moves at a fast pace and keeps you engaged throughout. As always, the characters are well written and easy to connect with. A great, easy read.
I love reading the 'private' series and this one didn't disappoint me, it was action packed from the 1st page. I couldn't put it down. Can't wait for the next one to come out
