Brie Baggio thinks she’s ready… for marriage, kids, the whole shebang. She’s pushing forty, and even though she’s the Senior Anti-Aging Ambassador at Los Angeles’s hottest med spa, Botox can’t paralyze that nagging feeling that it’s now or never. But when she witnesses a wild act of public sex, Brie tears her marriage plans apart and composes a sexual bucket list of scenarios she wants to experience before she settles down. She has life yet to live, lessons to learn, and someone to find—herself—along the way.
Smart, sexy, chock full of pop culture, Conquest is a love letter and instruction manual to modern women everywhere struggling to find love. Brie’s list will take her into the murky waters of adulthood, make her tangle with Sexbots, undergo Trinidadian cleansing rituals, and engage in full-scale social media self-sabotage, but will it lead her to love?
Jaime Boust is a writer whose work ranges from literotica to anonymously submitted business plans to her favorite failing local retailers. Her fiction includes Book Club, Conquest by her alter ego Steam Bijou, and the forthcoming serial Night Life--a series about a thirty-something mother who, disillusioned by the monotony of motherhoods, starts a high-end prostitution ring. The similarities between Ms. Boust and her anti-heroine are startling, minus the prostitution.
Jaime received her formal education at the University of California at San Diego and her informal education on the streets of London, the hills of San Francisco, the sewers of Paris, and the suburban wilds of Oakland. These days you'll find her dodging traffic in Los Angeles with her husband and two kids. Many things have been said of her: idea machine, portmanteau enthusiast, cutthroat croquet player, national champion cheerleader, world's spiciest cook. Believe them all.
I gotta tell you, I cannot WAIT to read the next installment of Conquest. The first three episodes have got me totally hooked. Conquest is the story of Bree, a woman who thinks she wants the white picket fence and all that, and then realizes that her in her pursuit of the norm, she's missed out on experiencing life. So she sets out to do so... ahem, one "conquest" at a time... a bucket list of sorts.
You could call Conquest "thinking woman's erotica" - not only does it have really steamy scenes, but it delves into other themes, like the pursuit of happiness, youth, and beauty, personal growth, and being true to yourself. The characters that surround Bree are fantastic, from her co-workers at the rejuvenation spa, to her sex-in-they-city-esque best pals, to her Trinidadian astrologist. I am so impressed with the author's imagination and at the same time her ability to touch on universal truths in the lives of women.
The author sent me an e-book copy for potential reviewing on ROMANCE NOVELS FOR FEMINISTS. Since the book contains only the first three "episodes" of Brie Baggio's story, and I couldn't tell yet what direction the story and the character would take, I didn't feel this was suitable for the blog. But I am really intrigued by what Bijou has done here.
Brie Baggio is an almost forty-something LA girl, who, in the book's opening chapter, tries to persuade herself to accept the proposal of the less than drool-worthy guy she's been dating. But overhearing a torrid couple fucking in the woods in the park where her potential fiancé has taken her to propose makes Brie realize that she hasn't been living her life:
"I'm talking about my failure to carpe diem before I get married. I've wasted so much time trying to act like the girl they want to marry instead of doing what they're doing, which is fucking who they want to, how they want to, and not feeling bad about it" (Kindle Loc 98).
Brie's plan to carpe diem consists of creating a "Fucket" list, with ten sex acts she wants to experience before she settles down. This leads one to expect an erotic romance, yet what follows is more ironic literary fiction, a story which invites us to laugh out loud at the surface-obsessed Brie (she's a "Senior Anti-Aging Ambassador" at the spa where she works) and the culture which fosters such obsession as much as it invites us to take vicarious pleasure as Brie checks off the first three items on her list: sex with an older man; sex with a younger man; sex with a teacher. But Brie isn't just an object of contempt; Bijou's accomplishment here is to make readers (at least this one) feel for Brie, so caught up as she is in the self-absorbed culture of looking good. Brie's third fucket list encounter even suggests that she might be starting to develop a little self-awareness, or at least an awareness that the feelings of others beside herself are worth considering.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the further adventures of Brie, and discovering how much of a social critique (or not) her story ends up being.
I read episodes 1-3 of Conquest, and I have to say, I thought this was pretty genius. It was a terrific hook for readers, and it really worked for me. This was short and to the point, and just took me a day to read. I could definitely see myself keeping on with the series and moving on the other conquests that are listed. I thought this was a unique read, and especially if you are an erotica or erotic romance fan, I think this is one for you to snatch up!
Definitely a page turner! I definitely want to read more about Brie and her escapades. The character development was fantastic as you truly were able to envision each and every character. Fun little stories about her life and nothing was expected. Looking forward to the next episodes!
I enjoyed this book. It was different from most of the freebie books I've read. I wish it included the entire series though. I'm tired of reading parts of books! It's a big scam to make you buy the rest.
