3.0. For a series that was based so much on Gemma and Alex's attraction to each other, they didn't spend very much time together at all. Also, while the series did end in a way that most people will like, it was very anti-climactic, almost to the point of being forced.
Plot:
Gemma and Alex think they're falling in love with each other, and Gemma is pregnant with Alex's baby. Because of their connection with the star, they can't act upon their love, or it will kill them both. It's basically a moot point anyway because if they don't kill the star (dying themselves in the process), a portal will open, and evil will take over the world.
Characters:
As Gemma continues to learn more about her gifts, she and Alex fight their attraction for each other. Sadly, the only way we know they're fighting their attraction is that they both share longing looks, and they both refuse to let the other die. The desperation that was once there seems to be missing. To add to that, for two people who are so concerned with prophecy, neither of them is willing to listen, and as a result, they both counteract each other just about every time they try to do something.
Gemma, as in the last few books, seems to care more about what Laylen thinks than what Alex thinks. I found that kind of tiresome, mainly because I wanted Laylen and Aislin to end up together. Instead, Laylen never admits any feelings for Aislin and seems to pine away for Gemma even though he says he's accepted the fact that she wants to be with Alex. Aislin was probably my favorite character in the whole series, and I thought she deserved better.
Nicholas continues to haunt Gemma, and I was actually kind of glad because he brings the comic relief. Stephan also returns, but he seems nowhere near as threatening as everyone makes him out to be.
Writing:
While Sorenson shows a great deal of imagination, her books could really benefit from a good editor. Because of Gemma and Alex teleporting from place to place to time to time, the plot was already hard to follow. The spelling and grammatical errors just made for even more distraction. While this book didn't feature near as many sex scenes as the previous ones, I would still probably give it an R rating. In addition to the sexual situation (which were kind of nondescript), there was a lot of cussing and a ton of violence.
The Bottom Line:
If you made it this far, it's worth the read, but be warned.... There is a LOT going on. Also, even if you like the way the series ends, you might not like how it gets there.
