It’s winter in the forest. It’s cold and there’s heavy snow on the ground. Stikki and his family, along with the woodland creatures, are struggling survive as caches of food are dwindling. It’s not looking good and they will have to band together before they all perish.
This is a wonderful book. Full of magic and endearing characters. I especially loved the creatures nod to the pagan aspect of celebrating mid-winter.

Jane H. Wood is an immensely talented writer, with a special gift for capturing the playful movements and touching interactions between woodland creatures.

Young readers will be delighted to be back in the world of Stikki the Squirrel. He and his love, Rella, are now parents to 12-week old kits.

We meet them during an early, cold winter with scarce food.

In this 2nd book in the series, two "longlegs" enter as characters and readers are treated to a wonderful touch of magical realism. 12 year-old Sophie Davis and her dad live in the woods and play a critical role during a dire time in Stikki and Rella's lives.

Stikki the Squirrel: Tree Spirits is a heartwarming delight, full of kindness, cooperation, innocence, and hope. It is a perfect setting for Wood's messages about wildlife preservation.

The author's adorable illustrations accompany the beautiful storytelling. The Stikki books should become classics to be gifted and treasured. I hope this uplifting series continues.

5 heartfelt stars!

What a wonderful, sweet story this was.
Stikki is all grown up now, living in the Hazy Hills woodland with his mate Rella and his four delightful kits: Fluffer, Pantaloon, Coppertail and Rosehip. (I love their names) Life is amazing for this family of squirrels. However, winter is upon them, and the snow is lying; the conditions are dangerous. If that isn’t bad enough, foxes are in the area and longlegs (humans). And something has stolen his hidden cache of nuts.
Can Stikki and his family survive the harshness of winter and the dangers that are lurking in the forest? You’ll have to read this beautifully written story to find out, which has some cute little illustrations, may I add.
I had lots of favourite parts in this story, but one of them is when Stikki and Rella wake up the following morning after overindulging in Brodbore the badger’s sloe cordial.
I’ve read all Jane’s books and thoroughly enjoyed everyone of them. I love how descriptive her stories are, so you can visualise the scene and how she creates a magical presence. Highly recommended for children and adults!

Stikki is now an adult with a family of his own to protect. But it’s winter and a usually hard one at that, that sees Stikki and the other forest animals growing desperate due to a dwindling food supply. As he and his mate, Rella search for food they face a perilous journey across frozen terrain that sees them confront sly evil foxes. Then when they’re at their most vulnerable they encounter Longlegs (humans) but can these ones be trusted to help or they the same as the other Longlegs they have encountered? And has Stikki started a chain of events that awaken the mythical tree spirits? As with the previous book in the series this is a cute and fun little read but this time with the added suspense and peril as Stikki and his friend fight for survival. The pacing is good and as this is a short novel it can be read in just over 2 hours. There was a happy and satisfying ending but I do wonder if some of the unresolved elements especially with the foxes warning to Stikki, if that is setup for a third book. I can only hope.

Stikki The Squirrell -Tree Spirits is the second book in the Stikki the Squirrel series, written and illustrated by author Jane H Wood.

The story centres on Stikki and his friends and family, as the author transports readers back to the magnificent Hazy Hills Wood to find our intrepid hero and his beloved wife, Rella, being pursued by a pack of hungry foxes.
The pair have a narrow escape, saved in the nick of time by two longlegs (humans), twelve-year-old Sophie and her dad Evan Davis.

Unbeknownst to Evan and Sophie, their single act of kindness has devastating consequences, as Stikki and Rella's kitts are left all alone to fend for themselves in Hazy Hill Wood.

Jane Wood's captivating story is characterised by its lucidity and endearing charm. Her wonderful characters such as Stikki, Rella, Brodboar, Ceilpeck, Coppertail and Rosehip are relatable, charming and extremely well-drawn.

The group of woodland chums are steadfast in their camaraderie and enduring love for one another as they face adversity and adventures with moral dilemmas that will resonate with readers of all ages, especially children aged 8-12.

The tale is beautifully written, engaging, and crafted with wonderful prose, subtle humour and lovely illustrations that bring the characters and settings to life.

Any child would be proud to have this little gem in their collection. I'm buying a paperback copy for my 11-year-old granddaughter, Emily, who just adores this series.

In conclusion, Stikke The Squirrel-Tree Spirits comes highly recommended. It's an easy Five-Stars from Emily and me.

A DELIGHTFUL ANIMAL ADVENTURE STORY
This is the latest adventure for Stikki the Squirrel by award-winning Author Jane H. Wood, and it’s a most heart-warming and wholesome YA adventure. Book one introduced us to Stikki as a young squirrel, and now with book two we see that Stikki is all grown up with a family of his own. If you’ve not read the first book, have no fear. The story is just as entertaining and delightful as a standalone story.
This story is the tale of a family of grey squirrels, plus other animal friends, who are experiencing an especially harsh winter. When Stikki heads out to forage for food for his family, he ventures too far and becomes lost, and his mate Rella eventually heads out to look for him. Both are captured by the “longlegs” (humans).
Stikki and Rella, almost dead from cold exposure and exhaustion, are taken in by young Sophie and her father. Although they are cared for, Stikki and Rella escape but are again challenged by the elements and almost die.
There are adventures galore as Cecilpeck the Jay and Craw the black crow protect the squirrels from the dangerous foxes as Stikki and Rella attempt to return to their family.
There is a paranormal component to the story when the Ash spirit tree opens a whole new aspect to their animal world with the magical and brilliant dragonflies as tree spirits.
This is a glorious story especially for youngsters and young teen, but adults will enjoy the adventure equally. I highly recommend both Stikki books and others by this talented author.

A Sequel Full of Courage, Kindness, and Woodland Wonder
Tree Spirits deepens all the warmth, adventure, and quiet woodland magic that made the first Stikki the Squirrel book so memorable.
Stikki is now a devoted mate to Rella and a protective father. Against the backdrop of a harsh winter, food grows scarce, and predators -- foxes, hawks, and the mysterious “longlegs” -- add constant peril. Yet moments of kindness, courage, and cooperation shine through, balancing the danger with heart.
The ancient ash tree and its mystical “tree spirits” elevate the tale beyond animal adventure, weaving in wonder and timeless symbolism. Every creature and small act of bravery matters.
A parallel thread with Sophie and her father adds cozy human warmth, cleverly contrasting the stark winter forest and making the story feel even more expansive and intimate.
In her sensitive, charming portrayal of the natural world, Jane H. Wood’s gift lies in encouraging compassion for animals and respect for nature without ever preaching. The adorable, atmospheric illustrations complete the enchantment.
Yes, this is a survival story, but it’s also about family, resilience, friendship, and hope in the darkest season. Perfect for children aged around 8 to 10 or as a read-aloud treat for adults who love heartfelt animal tales.
I hope Stikki and his woodland family have even more adventures ahead.

Stikki The Squirrel: Tree Spirits by Jane H. Wood is book 2 involving Stikki the Squirrel and his mate Rella, who are now parents with kits of their own. This is a young elementary read for children about two squirrels that live in the Hazy Hills Wood. It is now winter and everything in the woods is under snow! Everyone is getting hungry as it is winter and food is scarce in the woods. Stikki must venture out in search of food for himself and for Rella. Stikki taking the long journey through the wintery woods is such a great story for elementary aged kids who want a great wholesome read of a chapter book, in my opinion. I loved the illustrations by the author and illustrator, they make the story come alive in our heads as we read the book. And I loved the ending where Stikki gets a very happy ending! The story is beautifully told about a family working together to obtain a common goal which resonated really well in our house, we follow this example! I love this book and recommend this one to fans of animals acting as animals but speak with human voices. That is the best part for kids in my opinion. Highly recommended!

MY THOUGHTS:
What a delightful sweet story and an absolute joy to read!

Like in Charlotte‘s Web, The Secret of NIHM, and the fabulous Watership Down, it always amazes me how authors can write a story using animals as the main characters and make them sound as though they are people. This one was very believable. I fell in love with Stikki and his mate Rella right away.

This story is very sweet as you follow two squirrels, their family, and friends through their woods and beyond. It gets a little scary and intense but all ends well and is a very heartwarming story.

I’m going to save this one and give it to my granddaughter. I think this is one that she would really enjoy when she’s a little bit older. I would recommend this for slightly older children (10 - 12 yr. olds), not because of content, but because of the use of some large words that young children wouldn’t understand yet.
But even as an adult, I enjoyed this very much.

I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from Rachel's Random Resources - Thank You!!

Occasionally, you come across a really charming children's book that harks back to those of your youth. Stikki the Squirrel: Tree Spirits is one such. Book two of the series, and a harsh winter threatens the forest’s animals as food is terribly short, and Stikki goes on a hunt for some to feed himself, his mate and his children. Plenty of adventure follows, from being attacked by foxes to near-death drowning, to being captured by humans and attacked by a jealous cat. It’s difficult not to like this book and its host of characters. A splendid adventure and a really good children's read, deservedly so for this well-written book. Also, a series of lovely illustrations accompanies the text.

Delightful Squirrel Adventure

This sweet book with attractive illustrations will make a great bedtime story, but is also suitable for a young reader. There is humour, kindness and mild peril. The author brings in some of the complexities of wildlife e.g. the fox is not a nice creature, but there is no preaching a viewpoint . The author does not shy away from the fact that grey squirrels are not native but deals with the issue in a gentle way. I read this book in kindle form but I am sure children will enjoy having it in paperback.

What a lovely book! Everything from the wintery cover to the story inside caught my eye and held my attention.

It's the second in the Stikki the Squirrel series and was easily read as a standalone, although I think I'd like to read kit Stikki's story too.

As an adult I really enjoyed it and fell head over heels for the cuteness of Stikki, his family, and the rest of the walking talking woodland creatures.

Beautifully written with some sweet illustrations, Tree Spirits is a heartwarming story of friendship, fun, and the wonders of magic.

This is a delightful story aimed at 8–12-year-olds, filled with woodland animals and some wonderfully amusing names. Although it’s the second book in the series, it works perfectly well as a standalone novel.

In the first book, Stikki was a young grey squirrel; here, he is fully grown with a partner, Rella, and their four kits, Fluffer, Pantaloon, Rosehip, and Cottontail. Alongside them is a charming cast of characters whose names are sure to raise a smile. Back in the Hazy Hills Wood.

The story unfolds during a bitterly cold winter. Hungry and desperate, Stikki ventures out to forage for food for his family, that he had buried in the autumn, only to discover it’s gone. Straying too far, he ends up trapped by foxes. Back at home, Rella grows increasingly worried. With the help of Brodboar the badger, who watches over the kits and helps organise a search, she sets off to find him.

When Rella finally locates Stikki, she manages to help him escape, but their troubles are far from over. They end up in an icy river, and as Rella begins to succumb to the cold, Stikki refuses to let go of her.

Meanwhile, in a nearby cottage, we meet Sophie and her father, Evan. With Sophie missing her mother, who is away caring for her injured sister, and Christmas Day approaching, they head out to gather holly for a wreath. During their walk, they spot Stikki and Rella at the river’s edge. Determined to help, they take them home and place them in an old cat basket wrapped in a warm scarf, hoping they will survive. But even if they recover, will they manage to escape the family cat? To the woodland creatures, humans are simply known as “two legs.”

Stikki the Squirrel: Tree Spirits is a children's book by Jane H. Wood. It's been a harsh winter for Stikki the Squirrel and his family. In fact, all the animals in the woodland have been affected by the cold and snow. Stikki leaves his mate Rella and their four kits to retrieve his hidden stash of food, only to run into a couple of predatory foxes. Rella follows Stikki's trail and finds him, but the foxes haven't given up yet. After falling into the river, Stikki and Rella are unexpectedly rescued by two "longlegs". Meanwhile. the kits are searching for their parents, led by the eldest, Fluffer. Can Fluffer and his siblings get to their parents before the foxes? And how long will the winter last?

Stikki the Squirrel: Tree Spirits is a cosy adventure for young readers. Children will learn about the importance of family, friendship, and teamwork from this captivating tale with animals as the main characters. They will also be thoroughly entertained. I know I was even as an older reader. The plot is absorbing and the characters immensely likable. Jane H. Wood paces the narrative in a way that gives time for readers to get to know the characters in-depth and immerse themselves in the setting of the woodland. There are so many interesting characters, including Stikki, Rella, their kits, Sophie and her family, Craw, Brodboar, and many more. Their distinct personality traits let each of them leave their mark on the reader. I also liked the ending. It's optimistic and full of hope. Children are going to love this book.

One Liner: Cute

It is winter in Hazy Hills Wood, making it hard to find food with so much snow around. Moreover, there’s a food thief on the prowl! When Stikki the squirrel doesn’t return home to Rella after going out to source some food, she sets out to find him.

Deep in the forest, Brodboar the badger finds something strange in the high branches of a tree, and this worries him. With Stikki and Rella missing, the animals come together to search for their friends and save them.

The story is told in third-person POVs.

My Thoughts

This is the second book in the series about the adventures of a grey squirrel, Stikki. It works pretty well as a standalone, though there were a couple of instances where the context about the forest and past adventures was missing.
The third-person POV allows us to see the thoughts of different characters. This helps because most of the cast are animals, and knowing their thoughts is a good way to follow the story.

There are a few B&W illustrations scattered throughout. Drawn by the author, these have a rustic vibe. Independently, they are pretty good. Combined with the story, they don’t really stand out.

The book deals with quite a few themes, though primarily it talks about respecting nature, not interfering with animal habitats in the wild, and protecting forests.

The adventures are engaging, even if the pacing is slower than I expected. Quite a lot happens, too, so I’m not sure if kids would be hooked throughout, especially in the last quarter, when I was ready for the book to end.

There were areas where the writing felt more suited for older readers, but don’t take my word for it. I haven’t interacted with the target age group (7 to 11 years) for a while. Also, such aspects are case-sensitive. That said, I like that the squirrel couple takes care of each other. They cuddle, hug, and talk things out, which I feel would be a good example of how parents should be.

The book ends on a happy note, though it can continue to have more adventures. The setting and animals are cool. A bit more finesse would make the whole thing sparkle.

To summarize, Stikki the Squirrel: Tree Spirits is an engaging read with some intense adventures and a touch of magic realism with the tree spirits.

My thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and the author for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

Review of advance copy received from Author

Stikki the Squirrel: Tree Spirits follows Stikki, his mate Rella, their four kits, and a whole woodland of animals trying to survive a brutal winter while food runs out and foxes, hawks, and “longlegs” (humans) prowl around. In the middle of the snow and danger, a mysterious ancient ash tree wakes up, while in a nearby Welsh village a book-mad girl called Sophie gets ready for Christmas with her family. The story weaves between the cold, risky lives of the animals and the warm glow of Sophie's cottage.

I really liked the way the writing feels cosy and old-fashioned, like a grandparent telling a long story by the fire. The language is simple but not babyish, with fun touches like calling humans “longlegs” and giving the animals big personalities. The woodland scenes are very vivid, all that deep snow and biting wind and creaking branches, and the chase with the foxes actually made me tense up. The tone swings between gentle and quite intense, so one moment you get cute kit chaos and the next you get a life-or-death scramble for a tree or a plunge into the freezing river. The black-and-white drawings scattered through the book match that feeling really nicely, with scratchy, lively lines that make Stikki look both adorable and a bit frazzled.

Underneath the talking animals, there is a strong “we are all connected” vibe, with the trees, the weather, the pigs who escaped a factory farm, the deer, the foxes, even the grumpy crow, all tangled into the same story of survival and kindness. I loved the reveal of the tree spirits as dragonfly-like beings who noticed Stikki’s bravery and his unselfish wish for food. The Sophie chapters add a different warmth: books stacked at the end of the bed, hot chocolate, a recovering aunt, and that Christmas feeling of everyone finally being in the same house again after a scare. It made the whole thing feel like two threads of hope, one human and one wild, running side by side.

I would recommend Stikki the Squirrel: Tree Spirits to kids who enjoy longer animal stories with a mix of danger and comfort, probably confident readers around eight to twelve or younger children as a read-aloud with an adult. It is also a sweet pick for anyone who loves winter tales, forest magic, and the kind of story that quietly nudges you to care about animals and trees while you are wrapped up in the adventure.

Winter is not my favorite season. Winter is my most abhorred season. Its coldness, its grayness and lack of color, its cruelty to those who are homeless and have difficulties getting food which jeopardizes their survival. It shows no mercy to human and non-human animals alike. It bares only its white, sharp teeth, ready to dig them into your body and extracts your juices, your life out of you. Like it almost happened to Stikki and Rella, like it happens to many unknown animals not mentioned in this beautiful children story, a successful sequel to Stikki the Squirrel.

The only kind of winter’s beauty I can see in Jane H. Wood’s writing, and not from the reasons mentioned above. Just like in her YA fantastic duology, GoldenEars, beauty of winter lies in those who are willing to risk everything, even their lives, to help those troubled and needed. Friendship, camaraderie, selflessness, and kindness, among other virtues, are the most beautiful winter moments. And what’s even more beautiful is that they are not limited to a certain species, they know no boundaries, they are universal. So is cruelty, true, but Stikki the Squirrel: Tree Spirits is not a story about cruelty of predators to their victims; it is the story of giving, helping, sacrificing, and sharing with other fellow creatures of one big, magnificent family.

I thank the author for letting me read an advance review copy at no cost and with no obligations toward the author, and I also thank her for the gorgeous illustrations which make the story even more appealing and adorable, just like its protagonists are.

ARC Review.
This is such a charming book, and although the second in the series it stands on it's own two feet - or should that be paws! I have not read the first book, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment, I was easily able to slip into the beautifully described woodland world of Stikki and his family, friends and foes. The author has managed to create and convey personalities for all the different animal characters, who are delightfully illustrated throughout the book by her own hand. The storylines move at a good pace, carrying a degree of tension, between animals and the 'longlegs' humans right until the final page. An entertaining read for children and adults, but also showing the importance of respecting wildlife and how to overcome adversity by working together. A delight to read as an adult and I think this will be a big winner with children!

Stikki The Squirrel: Tree Spirits by Jane H Wood is a very charming children’s novel and perfect for the over eights.
The reader joins a family of squirrels just before Christmas. With snow on the ground, the daddy squirrel hunts further afield for food. He meets some vicious foxes. His mate is determined to save him. Together the pair are caught up in an unwanted adventure.
The reader sees the kindness of a young girl and her father to the squirrels. And we hear of the chaos caused by the family cat!
All the woodland animals work together to support the young squirrel family. We see that together we are stronger.
Stikki The Squirrel: Tree Spirits is a very delightful novel to be enjoyed all year round.

Charming fable

Stikki and Rella return for another adventure in this sweet children’s story. In the depths of a harder-than-usual winter, the pair and their kits are facing adversity, along with the other animals who share their woodland home. Brodboar the badger and other characters from book 1 are joined by some new faces, including Sophie, a human girl who shows Stikki that not all ‘longlegs’ are bad. I particularly enjoyed the scenes in her home. The titular tree spirits add a touch of mystery to a tale that emphasises the importance of family and friends. Though Stikki makes a new enemy, all’s well that ends well, but I have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ll hear from the delightful squirrel. Like the first book, this one contains cute illustrations drawn by the author, which are sure to enchant young readers.

Stikki the Squirrel Tree Spirits by Jane H. Wood is a delightful story for the whole family. I enjoyed seeing the character Stikki go from young squirrel in the first book to a father and mate in this family-oriented action story for kids. The adventure that Stikki goes on foraging for food turns into a quest to find the way back home, facing danger and unexpected friends. The author cleverly shows life and priorities from a squirrel’s perspective on everything from birds, foxes, to even humans. The wrap up at the end hints at more adventures to come for Stikki, Rella, and the squirrel children! Enjoyable from start to finish.

Well, I mistakenly read book 2 before I read book 1. However, it didn't stop me from enjoying the story. I'm typically a dark romance reader and really needed a break from the genre. This was a cute and exciting story following a little squirrel and his family. This is something I would have loved as a child. I found the pros to be a little fancy for the age range but it was still beautiful. I loved the art the author put in the book as well. I'm going to say this book is perfect for someone in the 8-11 age range who loves animals. Absolutely adorable, and even as an adult I found it entertaining and a perfect break from the darkness I typically read. Well done

I have all the books in this wonderful series. If I could give this book more stars I would. Rella and Stikki find themselves in a rather difficult situation, tough winter, where all animals are struggling... The winter is unforgiving and tests their strenghts and weaknesses. We are introduced to a new character called Sophie, kind and caring. The woodland creatures call humans longlegs! I loved this term, as I could imagine being tiny animal myself and looking up through their eyes. Brodboar is another wonderful character, a badger that shows up in this wonderfully written story. I highly recommend this amazing book.
