Wrong Fake Love by Simone Sen Rating: ★★★☆☆
There’s a lot of potential here, and I can absolutely see what this book is trying to be. I’m giving it a generous 3 stars because while I enjoyed parts of it, overall it felt like something was missing.
My biggest issue was pacing and cohesion. The story would linger for pages on scenes or internal thoughts that felt like they could have been trimmed, and then suddenly a major, plot-altering moment would drop out of nowhere. It was jarring, especially because the intensity would spike, then immediately return to normal as if nothing happened. There were also continuity moments that pulled me out, like the narrative saying Ishika hasn’t seen Ryan in years, then later referencing all the soccer games she watched him play.
The fake dating element also felt short-lived. It quickly jumped into a real relationship with intense feelings that read closer to how teens experience “all-consuming” first love, rather than two adults easing into trust and vulnerability. I wanted more build, more tension, and more time for the relationship to feel earned.
Where the book shines is Ryan. Simone Sen writes the bad boy archetype well, and I would love to see her continue leaning into that strength. He’s rough around the edges but protective underneath, and his backstory genuinely tugs at you. He was easily the most compelling part of the story for me.
Overall, this could use another round of editing. The pieces are there for a strong, well-plotted romance, but they do not quite click into place yet.
eARC disclosure: Thank you to Simone Sen for the eARC. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. My opinion is my own, and receiving the book for free did not shape this review in any way.
