The Fracture of the Veil: Book 2 of the Veil Saga

Rate this book
The Veil is under attack, and the war to protect it has gone global.

James Crable survived the battle for a quiet corner of Ohio, but victory came at a cost. Across the world, ancient anchor points that have held for millennia are failing in sequence. Sacred sites are collapsing. Old protections are being corrupted from within. And behind every fracture is a pattern too deliberate, too precise, to be anything but war.

Someone is dismantling the Veil itself.

The enemy moves with patience measured in centuries and knowledge that should have stayed buried. They are not breaking through the boundary between worlds. They are rewriting it. And if James cannot stop them, the Veil will not simply fall. It will be remade into something no longer meant to protect humanity at all.

He is not fighting alone. But the closer he grows to those standing with him, the more he realizes what he stands to lose when the Veil finally breaks.

From medieval battlefields to nineteenth-century frontiers and fogbound docks, the fight for the Veil now spans continents and centuries. New, more dangerous enemies emerge, and James Crable is learning what every immortal eventually discovers: some fractures cannot be mended.

For readers who burned through the Dresden Files and the Iron Druid Chronicles, The Fracture of the Veil delivers supernatural warfare with global stakes, sharp humor, and an immortal protagonist whose scars run deeper than his enemies.

The Fracture of the Veil is Book Two of The Veil Saga, a globe spanning urban fantasy with the grit of historical fiction, sharp humor, and high stakes that leave real consequences behind.

When the boundary between worlds dissolves, the most dangerous threat you face might be the one you've carried for centuries.

About the author

Jack Calder

2 books30 followers
Jack Calder grew up in Ohio, where he developed a Midwestern work ethic, an appreciation for quiet neighborhoods, and the ability to survive winters that felt character-building in the worst way. From there he took a hard left turn into the wider world, eventually landing in London, an experience that taught him to walk quickly, speak dryly, and accept that a “queue” can form anywhere, including places no line should reasonably exist.

Today, he lives just outside Washington, D.C., a region known for history, humidity, and traffic patterns so chaotic they should be studied as a form of dark magic. He shares this adventure with his brilliant and endlessly supportive wife, and with his three kids, now in college.

Professionally, Jack is an aerospace and defense consultant with more than 25 years navigating global strategy, technology programs, and meetings that could have absolutely been emails. His career has taken him across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, wandering through airbases, innovation labs, and cities so old they make your soul feel young. He has lived overseas, traveled widely, and developed a deep and unwavering belief that the cultural heart of any place can be found through its food and wine. Preferably in generous quantities.

Jack’s love of history, mythology, and travel eventually collided with an inconvenient amount of imagination, leading him to writing. His novels blend centuries-spanning history with modern urban fantasy, weaving together immortal warriors, ancient brotherhoods, fragile Veil-magic, and the everyday reality of suburban Ohio. He writes stories filled with atmosphere, humor, emotional depth, and characters who are just trying to make good choices in a universe that rarely cooperates.

When he isn’t shaping new chapters, Jack can often be found reading, exploring local restaurants, overanalyzing the wine list, or pretending his frequent-flyer miles are “research related.” On rare occasions he also attempts yard work, but only when absolutely necessary and usually with poor results.

Jack is always delighted to connect with readers, fellow writers, and anyone who enjoys a good story told with heart, history, and a touch of mischief.

The Fracture of the Veil is nothing short of breathtaking. Jack Calder doesn’t just tell a story; he creates an immersive experience that spans from the rugged beauty of Native American lands to the sacred, ancient streets of Jerusalem. This sequel masterfully balances high-stakes fantasy with historical depth and a touch of romance.
What stands out most is the pacing. Much like the first novel, Calder weaves together different time periods and locations with such clarity that the mental connections click into place exactly when they should. The descriptions are vivid enough to transport you instantly, and the villains are the perfect blend of loathsome and captivating. It’s a beautiful exploration of friendship, teamwork, and heartbreaking loss.
If you want a story that sweeps you off your feet and leaves you desperate for the next installment, this is a must-read. Support this incredible Indie author—you won’t regret it.

Simply amazing. I could not put the book down. It covers different time periods in a way that’s easy to follow and leads to mental connections that become relevant when they should- just like the first novel. The descriptions really build an image in your brain that transports you from the here and now. The villains make you hate them and enjoy them at the same time. And without ruining anything, there are some unexpected turns that continuously keep you engaged. Such a beautiful telling of friendships old and new, companionship, teamwork, and loss. And the ending makes you crave more while leaving you wondering where the next book will pick up. I cannot recommend this book enough. Please support this Indie author, Jack Calder, and his amazing work.
