Ten years as an assassin did not prepare me for customer service.

What can I say about this author and her books, except that she hooks me in from the very first line. A lot more... I can, and will say quite a bit more...
I'm not clear how Ms McBride does it, but each time I pick up one of her books, I fall under a spell. And it's not just her phenomenal penmanship, it's everything that lies between the covers, be that plot, which is always compelling, be that the world she's crafted, which is so vivid I'm living it, be that the characters she's created, who tug at my heart. Yep, Ms McBride sure knows how to fill a cauldron and produce magic!
We got some valuable insight about liv in the prequel, which expands in this book, and, true to form, my heart was on the floor in despair at what Olivia went through. Through no fault of hers. Now, 10 years later, she's trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. But "life" won't let go of it's grip on her, she carries a huge amount of guilt for a potion she helped brew. A potion with the ability to turn vamps into mindless killers. After a few went on the rampage, leaving bodies in their wake, Liv is even more determined to shut the source down. But she's up against a tonne of obstacles, from her former boss, from the Enclave, from the Witches council, from just about everyone. No one wants her to pursue this, no one wants her involved. Liv, being Liv, can't walk away and pretty soon, gets herself into a whole lot of trouble. Especially with the yummy Rafe, who seems to pop up constantly, trying to keep her out of following through.
If there ever was an enigma, that's Rafe. He's protective of Liv but distant, he's obviously taken with her but keeps her at arms length. He's been someone who's turned Liv's emotions into mush, and I can't say I blame her with his hot/cold attitude. But OMG, the heat between them is.... furnace hot! I love love love how Ms McBride has me guessing what the heck is on with him, why he can't just BE himself. But, there's something hidden so deep, I know I'm going to be gobsmacked when it eventually comes out! With Liv being a lure to trap the vamp responsible for distributing Nectar, doesn't help put Rafe into any semblance of ease, if anything, he's one screw short of losing the plot. His reactions to the "dates" Liv has are hilarious but boy, oh boy, oh boy, an eeeeeeekkkk of delight erupted from me at Brendan's words (he was one of the ill-fated dates), I was literally jumping up and down like a hyperactive kid! Aha... to know why, you do need to read the book....
Being able to experience what the characters do, being able to fall into their shoes, which I do, is yet another skill this author possesses. I loved characters popping up from previous books, it's all the same world after all, but Ms McBride does it so seamlessly, easily slotting it all together. The Stitch Witches are as hilarious as ever, and so very much in Liv's camp, always there to support her even as she takes things into her own hands. She's incredibly resilient, incredibly driven and incredibly badassed. She can fight exceptionally well, being a Shadow taught her that, she has magic, which is going wonky since she brought back an unexpected something from hell. Yes, you need to read the prequel too... I love her thought process, her fearlessness, the way she's determined to save whomever she can, and to control this "new thing" happening to her. I love how she will always stand for whatever's right, even at the expense of herself.
This book only just titillated my tastebuds, I'm not sure how I'm going to last waiting for the next book, I am obssessed to discover what the deal with Rafe is, why the Enclave is being so illusive and most of all, I'm dying to find out how the whole Rafe/Liv "thing" falls into place! An immersive, unputdownable read, by a hugely talented author! Roll on book 2!

Having read the prequel to this series, I knew I was going to love this one from the first page! It was such a fun read with so much going on that I just couldn't put it down. Shame I had to work and sleep though.
Olivia, a former Shadow assassin, has now been relieved of her punishment and is trying to settle into a normal life in Kansas City along with her aunt and her aunt's coven. But life has a way of throwing things at Liv, things she shouldn't get involved in, but things she can't help but try and deal with.
Still carrying a huge amount of guilt of her role in the creation of Nectar, a highly powerful drug which makes the taker's blood highly addictive for any vampire close by, Liv stumbles on a vampire who appears to be Nectar crazed. She does the only thing she can and decides to go after him, but her powers fail her, something that has never happened before. And the one person she never expected comes to her rescue.
Liv knows what's going on even if the powers that be refuse to acknowledge it. She manages to get herself involved in the investigation, but it is worse than she expected. Liv is not one to just sit back and watch from the sidelines even when she is told do exactly that. She will do whatever she can, with or without her failing magic to try and stop the latest Nectar induced killings. I love her determination and resilience - she never gives up, even when things are not going her way. She is strong, feisty and immensely loyal to others and to the cause.
Rafe was a surprise - in the prequel he was an arrogant, rude wolf shifter. That much didn't change, but we also got to see a different side to him at times, especially when the secret he has been holding was revealed. There is definitely some tension between these two and I think there will be so much more between them before anything can be resolved. I can't wait to read this slow burn romance start to come through.
This was a great read and I loved the little cross over with Riley Cruz as well. You don't necessarily need to have read that series, but why not - it's another great series. I love the world building in this series as well and the side characters are brilliant - Betsy was hilarious particularly. The Stitch Witches were so much fun!
This first full book in this series is a fantastic read, perfect for urban fantasy lovers, but also perfect for anyone who loves strong heroines, a great plot, hilarious side characters, a grumpy, but hot love interest and a cute little pack rat who steals everything!

This was definitely a 4.5 ⭐️ read!
I was lucky enough to get this as an Advanced Reader Copy, as well as its prequel, and I loved everything about it. The premise was great, the tension was there and I was really glad to see that romance was not necessarily the focal point of the book. Don't get me wrong, I love romantasy but I enjoy this genre much more when the world building is great, which it is.
I would probably recommend ready Riley's series before, as this was my third read by this author and I believe that there was a spoiler regarding the ending of Riley's story. Hence, if you would like to read her other series, I believe it wise to follow the release dates. However, I don't really mind knowing this piece of information as I plan to read her other works.
Regarding this book, I liked everything there was. We have a strong FMC who is not so stubborn as to always put herself in the wrong positions, she is motivated by her haunting past and will follow her values until the end. One of the strengths of this book is the world building, and I believe that the clever interconnections between the other series' characters are noticed by her recurrent readers and give this story a more intimate feeling as the reader can see the progression of the characters. Liv's cheekiness, her undercover life, her past traumas, the character development and storyline, everything made sense and was cohesive with the stakes.
I don't think the story was predictable, there were no major plot twists that didn't make sense, but that cliffhanger! In my opinion, the romance reached the "max" that I deem respectable for a first book in a series, meaning that sometimes it seems as if we, readers, are so greedy that we lose the banter and tension, which hasn't happened in Fire Marked. I can't wait for the second book to come out, I have discovered a great author and I definitely recommended her books to my bookish friends. Hope you will all like it as much as I did 🤩

I deeply enjoyed this book! It was such a fun, atmospheric read, and as someone who loves me some paranormal romance, this was absolutely perfect for me. The combination of mystery, magic, romance, and investigation had me hooked from the beginning, and I loved the overall atmosphere of the story.
Liv was such an amazing protagonist. She’s strong-headed, powerful, and completely badass, but she’s also carrying so much guilt and feels like she needs to atone for her past. What I loved most about her is that underneath all that power and toughness, she’s genuinely such a good person. She’s flawed, she struggles, and she’s trying to do the right thing, which made her so easy to root for.
And of course… we have to talk about our resident grump. 😏 Rafe is one seriously scowling hottie, and that tormented past of his? GIVE ME MORE. I absolutely loved his interactions with Liv, and their dynamic was so much fun to read. I have approximately a million questions about him now because I NEED to know more about what is actually going on with this man. 👀
BUT honestly, the true stars of this book are the coven of 70-something witches backing up Liv. 😂 These women were some of the funniest, most badass characters I’ve ever read about, and I loved every single one of them. They brought so much personality and fun to the story, and I would happily read an entire book about them.
And a very special mention to the cutest sword-wielding rat. 🐀⚔️ That is all. Just… perfection.
All in all, I absolutely loved the atmosphere, the mystery, and the investigation. I was completely invested in figuring out what was going on, and I cannot wait to learn more because THAT LAST SENTENCE?!?!

This book is so much fun. I love Liv's combination of heart-of-gold and ex-assasin fire, hardened deadliness and determined optimism. There's loveable characters, good plot, multi-layered mysteries, some political/assasin/spy intrigue, slow burn romance, true friendships, and steady stream of hilarious laugh-so-hard-you-cry moments. Prepare yourself for fire hula hooping, the most hilariously bad date I've ever read, disturbing plant pots, guerilla gardening, competitive karaoke, possibly incompetent blacksmithing, hilarious pets, and ruthlessly supportive old witches in 80s get-up. Liv's won me over and the plot had me hooked. It doesn't end on a cliff hanger exactly, but the end teases a big reveal to come in the next book. (I can't wait and have sooo many theories.)
I highly recommend reading the "prequel" novella Inferno Bound. It has a lot of character background, a good plot, and an ending that is somehow both dramatic and hilarious. This novella was actually released first, so I consider it more of an intro novella than a true prequel. For those who didn't already meed Liv by reading LA McBride's two other series set in the same universe, this novella is probably especially useful.
This is book 1 in a new series set in the same world (and town) as LA McBride's Kali James and Riley Cruz books. You don't need to read those series first, but they do contain some relevent background. Those who have read them will recognize some fan favorite characters: Helen and her gang of powerful, chaotic, and generally awesome of elderly witches, Riley Cruz and Max Volkov make a couple appearances, etc. This series has it's own tone and brings plenty of new material to the table. It doesn't feel stale and the world has plenty of room to grow.
All in all, this book is so much fun, but also had enough action, danger, suspense, and mystery to keep me on the edge of my seat and anxious for more.

Now, she's trying to make a new life for herself in Kansas City with her aunt and her new coven. When she interrupts a vampire that is obviously on Nectar, the drug she was tricked into creating when she was 16, she realizes something big is going on in KC and it's connected to her past. Unfortunately, her powers are going haywire, and another Shadow is in town as well. She has to figure out how to control her powers and how to investigate with Rafe Blackwell complicating things as well.
Liv is definitely guilt ridden. She believes she is at fault for everything that happened even though she was just 16 when her vampire ex convinced her she was helping people rather than harming. She spent 10 years as a trained assassin and has guilt about that as well. Now she is trying her best to make up for all she believes she has done wrong. Rafe is like an immovable object. He is there to make sure she keeps herself out of Shadow business, but she is just as stubborn as he is. And of course, we have the Stitch Witches, and they are always a riot!! 🔥 ARC Review: Fire Marked by L.A. McBride 🔥

Fear not! No spoilers!
Liv is INCREDIBLE!
I thought I loved Inferno Bound, but absolutely nothing prepared me for Fire Marked. This book took everything I enjoyed about the prequel and somehow made it even better.
The character development was incredible, and the plot was so beautifully crafted. Every time I thought I had figured out where the story was going, something new was thrown into the mix that completely changed things. I genuinely did not want to put this book down because I needed to know what was going to happen next.
But Liv was easily my favorite part. Her strength, devotion, resilience, and sassy comebacks made it impossible not to love her. After everything she’s been through, watching her try to build a life for herself while still being completely incapable of ignoring people who need her made me love her character even more.
And the side characters?! Give me ALL OF THEM. A sword-charm-wielding klepto packrat, geriatric witches, a raccoon shifter, and a certain wolf shifter? I was sold. 😂 The relationships and personalities brought so much humor and heart to the story without taking away from the action or tension.
Fire Marked has the perfect combination of supernatural chaos, mystery, action, found-family vibes, humor, and characters you can’t help becoming attached to. The conflict kept me hooked, the banter had me laughing, and Liv continued to prove exactly why she’s a character worth rooting for.
Now I just have one question…

Liv is INCREDIBLE!
I thought I loved Inferno Bound, but absolutely nothing prepared me for Fire Marked. This book took everything I enjoyed about the prequel and somehow made it even better.
The character development was incredible, and the plot was so beautifully crafted. Every time I thought I had figured out where the story was going, something new was thrown into the mix that completely changed things. I genuinely did not want to put this book down because I needed to know what was going to happen next.
But Liv was easily my favorite part. Her strength, devotion, resilience, and sassy comebacks made it impossible not to love her. After everything she’s been through, watching her try to build a life for herself while still being completely incapable of ignoring people who need her made me love her character even more.
And the side characters?! Give me ALL OF THEM. A sword-charm-wielding klepto packrat, geriatric witches, a raccoon shifter, and a certain wolf shifter? I was sold. 😂 The relationships and personalities brought so much humor and heart to the story without taking away from the action or tension.
Fire Marked has the perfect combination of supernatural chaos, mystery, action, found-family vibes, humor, and characters you can’t help becoming attached to. The conflict kept me hooked, the banter had me laughing, and Liv continued to prove exactly why she’s a character worth rooting for.
Now I just have one question…

I really enjoyed this book and the prequel. I actually enjoyed the prequel so much that I supported the author on kickstarter to get an early copy (and then joined the ARC team because I loved the story) if that tells you how much I liked it!
I will say going in that I feel like I missed some info because I had not read the previous series in this universe . There are some events mentioned that directly impact this story. I was a little confused because it seemed to have led to some issues Liv is having with her powers in this book. It didn't make it so confusing that I couldn't figure it out as the book went along, but I think it would help for context.
Ok now to the actual story! I really loved Liv as the main FMC. She is a retired fire elemental assassin who was exonerated from the crimes she supposedly committed that made her end up working for the Conclave (magical ruling body) for a decade. I had so much fun with this book!
Fire Marked has witches, shifters, vampires, mystery, danger, found family, plenty of action, and just the right amount of romance, but what really made it work for me was how much personality this world has.
Liv is a fire elemental witch whose magic hasn't been quite the same since she survived something she probably shouldn't have, and as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that what happened to her is much bigger than she realized. There's a coven whose average age is somewhere around 70 and who had me laughing throughout the book, a goat shifter determined to sing karaoke, and Arlo, a raccoon shifter who also happens to be an excellent hacker. Because obviously the raccoon is good at getting into places she isn't supposed to be.
The humor was one of my favorite parts of the book. It never took away from the serious moments; it made the characters and their relationships feel even more real. There's a lot of heart underneath all the supernatural chaos.
And then there's the ending.
This is absolutely a cliffhanger, but it's the GOOD kind, the kind that leaves you staring at the last page because now you desperately need the next book.

Liv is a fun character, establishing friendships and found family, but she is also strong, determined and feels guilt at the magic she unwittingly used, that released Nectar into the world.
Now there are people dying and Nectar is clearly part of the puzzle Liv wants to solve - who is behind the deaths and why, and who is supplying the Nectar? Fellow Shadow Rafe is suddenly in the area keeping an eye on her, and Liv really isn’t sure exactly how she feels about that, but he doesn’t seem keen to work with her to find out what is going on and she doesn’t know why.

You really can’t go wrong with a book by L A McBride.

The money she invests in a magic store. Set in the same world as the Riley Cruz series (Riley makes a surprise appearance in a karaoke bar), Olivia has been adopted into the same fun coven that Riley deals with. Between running her shop and teaching fire hula hoop lessons, she’s settling into her new life.
That is until she witnesses a vampire attack and discovers that the victim has been does with Nectar, a drug that causes blood lust. Nectar was involved in her original sentencing. Also appearing on the scene is the Enforcer Rafe Blackwell, who she previously worked with. They have interesting dynamics together.
This book has action, mystery, surprises, suspense, and humour. The elderly members of the coven are just as much fun and outlandish as they are in the Riley books.
This was a quick, easy, fun read. looking forward to the next one.

Fire Marked is the first full length story in Liv’s series and I loved it. Liv made a very bad mistake when she was a teen and was forced to become an assassin as punishment. She was eventually cleared of the crime and is trying to live a simple life running an Occult shop and teaching fire hula hooping classes, but trouble has a way of finding her. When she discovers a woman murdered in a way that may tie back to her teenaged self’s bad decisions, she just can’t walk away and let others handle it. She’s determined to right her past wrongs, even if it gets her killed.
I really liked Liv, she made bad decisions in the past, but she’s paid for her mistakes and is trying to keep her head down and live her life with her new coven. I like Rafe, but I’m looking forward to learning more about him in future books. I really enjoyed this book and devoured it in less than a day, which left me in a bit of a book depression since it ended with such a great hook for the next book. I cannot wait to see what happens next!

From the dedication to the ending that had me jumping out of my chair I could not put this down. L.A McBride is one of my favourite authors and when I heard that she was writing this series that interconnects with her others I was so excited to get into it.
Smaller in stature but big in heart, Liv is an amazing FMC with such a tragic backstory. In her new life she has become a business owner, fire hula instructor and part of a coven of sassy older witches - who I wish were my Coven-.
When she finds out that there are some dirty dealings with vampires and blood additive in her new home town she has to do something. Even if the Grumpy shifter is telling her to drop it.
If you know me, you know I love a bit of found family and some Enemies to lovers. This is written so beautifully and hit me in all the feels. Stunning Urban fantasy series and the ending !!!!! I need more right now.

What a wild ride this whole book was! Liv is starting her life over at 26 in Kansas City, opening her occult shop and serving the local coven. But her past transgressions, the naive 16 year self ones, come back to haunt this city and her. Trying to get infront of what might be the drug she helped create on accident, save those being targeted, and not get too tangled with the man she wants to avoid. This book is full of so much tension! The guilt that fuels Liv's actions is clear and understandable. I enjoyed the banter her and Rafe had, even if I still don't understand his motives for being there.
I look forward to where the author takes the story and hope for more details of Liv's trip to hell. Since it is important to the story, I really wanted more than just the few sentences we got here. I am sure more will come in the next book, I just have to be patient and let the author do their authoring.

Liv is a fire elemental who has a lot to make up for and is in Kansas City to do just that. She has opened her shop, bought a kickass Hellcat to drive and is giving classes to the local badass senior witches. What could possibly go wrong? Just a dead girl with a crazy Vampire on her in a parking lot surrounded by a bunch of normal humans. This just begins a journey she now realizes is what her life is really about. Helping people and keeping them safe from the evil in the world. She thinks she could be responsible for the evil but no one else does. Liv is just going to keep doing what she can to atone as long as she has a breath. L.A. McBride is one of those rare authors who make a novel seem like a short story, the time just flies by while reading and before you know it the end is in front of you. Some people call that a page turner, I just call it a McBride.

It is my first reading contact with the author and the sign is more than positive. I loved all her world building, I was crazy about the plot and I melted with her characters. But let me start from the beginning.
From the first page, it takes your breath away. The plot is full of suspense, secrets, twists and imagination. The characters are well-written and very well structured and developed. Everyone has a reason to exist in the story and that is very good. As for the world building, it is constantly evolving, as the pages turn at a dizzying pace.
Finally, her writing is captivating, enjoyable, captivating and enchanting.

It contained all the ingredients for an amazing story. I love fantasy books and this book contained it all from shifters to witches to demons and more … It was a gripping story that I did not want to put down to go to my work. It was beautifully written and had me gripped from the first page.
The dynamics between the characters was fantastic and the way it was written made me feel I was a bystander to the story.
The only downfall is the ending … I now cannot wait to read the next book in the series, Blaze Born.

I love Olivia! Set in the world of L. A. McBride's other books, this novel brings with it a marvelous cast of characters -- old friends to anyone who has read the other series. There is no need to have read them before, however, to love and connect with this story and Olivia. This author writes amazing female leading characters who are quirky, independent, and willing to do whatever it takes to solve the current problem, and Olivia is no different. No matter what the controlling men in her life are telling her to do, she is not going to sit by and watch people get hurt by a problem she feels responsible for starting. Witty, magical, and action-packed, this book proved almost impossible to put down!

Book one in the Alchemy of Witches series and boy is it good! It’s a well written, engrossing, fast-paced urban fantasy that draws you in with incredible world building and a kick ass witch with a heart of gold. Our fmc is a former assassin, falsely accused of a crime she did not commit and is just trying to start over in Kansas with a witchy shop and a new coven. Bodies start dropping, vampires are attacking witches and it cannot be ignored! Liv is strong, kick ass and sassy and with her new found family, she faces the problem, action and the danger head on. It’s gripping, it’s exciting and it has you in its throws from start to finish as this author knows how to grab you and hold you to the edge of your seat and I cannot wait to read more.

THE AUNTS ARE BACK!!!

I have been so excited for Liv's series since she was introduced at the end of Riley's but I was not prepared for how truly glorious her first full-length book would be! We have the aunts traumatising everyone around them, a past that will not leave Liv alone, and a bizarre ferret with hoarding tendencies.
These books I find take me longer to read purely because the sass is so original and the aunts so diabolical that it needs to be savoured (and sometimes read to my mom). While all the books in this world are emotional (Max & Riley at the ballet recital anyone?), there is just something about Liv's refusal to give up on those around her that feels real, empowering, and also completely devastating.
L.A. McBride does a masterful job of wringing a wide array of emotions from her readers, but it never feels manufactured or off-putting.
Truly my only quip is that I found Rafe's behaviour to lean a little bit too much into alphahole territory. It drives me absolutely mental how he and Aleksei keep things from her and then get upset on her acting based on her lack of information.
That being said, I take great delight in Liv and co pointedly flubbing the Conclave's rules and can't wait to see them do it even more (with maybe some more truly disturbing flower pots).

Fire Marked is the first book in the Alchemy of Witches Series by L.A. McBride.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book, as well as its prequel, and I loved everything about it!
This is my first book from L.A. McBride and let me tell you it’s certainly not the last one. I want to read all her other books (and the ones to come).
From the dedication to the ending, this book got me at the edge of my seat, and I could not put it down. The characters are well-written and developed.
If you love plot twists, slow burn (it was really burning throughout the book), found family, enemies-to-lovers romance, this book is for you. I highly recommend reading this book!
And THAT ending… I can’t wait to read book 2!

This is an author I don’t even bother to find out what it’s about before I request a book because I just love her writing so much. It had been a little while since I’d read the prequel, but I was drawn almost immediately back into the universe. No, you don’t need to have read the prequel to enjoy this, BTW. We get to know Olivia trying to reacclimate herself to being a normal person. However, she can’t seem to help getting into more trouble because she just can’t let her past with Nectar go because she feels so responsible. I just loved this action-filled book, and I absolutely adored all the characters. I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us in the next Olivia installment. Recommend.

I really enjoyed this, a heroine who despite being an ex assassin, because her boyfriend's actions made her that, is trying to make things right, she gets a new start, but her past is trotting behind closely and then as she navigates the past and the present, trying to help a girl whose being hung out to dry exactly as she was, by the same people, she starts to learn about the past. She has a mate, but he is not a good one, although he does help her when she most needs him. She wasn't even aware of the mate bond, but finds that out.

Fire Marked was easy to read and addictive. I loved the characters. From the main heroine,to the loveable elder witches, and grumpy wolf enforcer.
With so many magical creatures, it’s an amazing world with fated mates, slow burn, and found family.
There seems to be a lot more mysteries to solve, and I can’t wait to find out how it all goes.

And so another fab series starts! I love how L.A. McBride writes strong female characters, they won't back down from a fight and they always fight for the underdog. This was a great introduction to Liv and her coven, I love those ladies already!
And the possible love interest role is so well filled by Rafe, can't wait to find out more about him and his choices that have lead him to where he is now.
