Witches Love Monsters

Oops! I Summoned A Demonic Merman

Rate this book
One moment I’m within my domain in the abyss, and the next…
She’s in front of me with a steam cleaner in her hand.
Her name is Grace… but I’m in no threat of falling, feeling hexed…
With her, I’ve ascended, on land.

Now she wants to get rid of me, saying I’m an accident.
Unfortunately for her, I have no intention of leaving without a taste.
I plan to stay until she’s flustered, wet, and bent out of shape.
Then maybe I’ll give her a reprieve, after I’ve had my fill of the chase.

-Sepher, Duke of Hell

I’m so disappointed this was title that I was most excited for when I saw the series and this just fell flat. I know, I know… it’s a novella, but the plotting on this needed a novel or to be reframed. The ending was so abrupt and the relationship was not explored enough. Also, aspects of this book straight up pissed me off…

Now that I got a tad bit of ranted questions of my chest, let’s talk characters and plot. Our FMC is Grace a human woman who is very lonely but also connected to her family which she does favors for. These two collide when Grace, helps to clean up her parents rental after it was booked. Sepher is a Duke of Hell and a merdemon (yes, merman… I was hoping for King Triton and instead got Prince Eric with a tail. Not optimal.) I was so pumped for this story, but Sepher came off as bland and self-important because of a lack of context in his background.

Grace gets a bit screwed over when she finds her parents house ransacked by a coven of witches, who junked the place up with residual summoning circles and spent condoms. Idk, this whole setup left me with too many questions. How does this world even work… witches are common knowledge and their so bold as to trash an Airbnb. It was treated as normal that witches are out in the world, but by never leaving the cabin this story was done a disservice. It is completely fine to build a world with different social structures, norms and mores. In fact it something that Naomi Lucas kills at in some her other series such as the Naga Brides and the Cyborg Shifters.

2.25 stars that won’t stop me from reading a new release from Naomi Lucas or finishing up the series.

I had a feeling this one would be my least favorite of the collab, and unfortunately I was correct.
I did like Sepher. He was mischievous, and I always love the ‘I only like you’ kind of character.
But that ending??
What the fuck was that? He’s a Duke of hell, they both have magic. You’re telling me there was no other solution to their living situation? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sepher was mischievous and antisocial, with an intense and rapid onset desire for Grace. Grace was lonely but determined to make her own way in the world. She wasn’t as wily as one might hope someone to be who accidentally summoned a demon, which led to some… expectations. Sepher was no hero, definitely pushing for more at all times, but I like a little darkness.

Spice: 5/5

Triggers: dubcon, involuntary pregnancy (she didn’t know he could get her pregnant while she was on birth control, pregnancy lasts a few hours before egg sac laying, which is off page), kidnapping, loneliness, hell, mention of past cheating, mention of past SA/attempted SA of minor, mention of past fire, mention of torment,

What? Noooo! I need more! Or at least another epilogue where she’s not mortal and with him! It mentioned that she’ll be with him when she’s done with her mortal life but I need to read about it!! It ended with her introducing her parents to their kids.

Sigh, I did really enjoy it and clearly wished for more and I love that he’s a v and anti social.

Look, when I start a series, I tend to finish it… however, I'm currently second guessing myself. This book was equal parts hilarious and horny. Imagine you accidentally summoned a merman from hell and than decide you're going to f*ck it. Not to mention the giant breeding kink that you just stumble upon and of course the mild cnc. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Plot weak, but not FOR the weak. Characters; hilarious. Spice; immaculate.

Grace never meant to summon a demonic merman—especially not Sepher, a Duke of Hell ripped straight from the abyss and deposited into her life mid–steam cleaning session. Stuck back in her childhood home and desperate for money, Grace has no patience for an obsessed, seductive sea-demon who insists their meeting is fate. Unfortunately for her, Sepher has no intention of returning to the depths without first claiming her attention… and possibly her heart.

This is a fast, fun paranormal romp that mostly delivers what it promises. Grace accidentally summons Sepher, an obsessed demonic merman Duke of Hell, and the resulting chaos is flirty, funny, and briskly paced. I genuinely liked what we got: the writing flows smoothly, the story moves quickly, and Sepher and Grace are compelling, well-matched leads who carry the novella with ease. That said, it left me wanting just a bit more. Either a longer runtime to explore the questions it raises, or a tighter scope to avoid that itch. Still, it was an enjoyable read, and it definitely pushed me to finally pick up more from this author.

3.5/5 Short, spicy, and just a little unhinged (in the best way).

I LOVE the MERDEMON! Wished the book was longer especially his POV and more intimate moments! I felt that the beginning dragged a bit for them to be romantic especially for a short novella. But I LOVED THE PREMISE OF THE STORY! Super fun monster read!

I really liked how this started, and while I understand this is a novella, it ended abruptly. I would’ve like to have a little more of the relationship dynamic before the story ended.

Nope. Nope. Hellll no. I thought it was weird when he was literally sucking her tears from her eyeball but I stayed. I don't know why but I finished and ended with her literally spawning hundreds of children. Ummmm okay.

I love the naga series so know Naomi can do great monster romance, but sadly this just fell flat for me. There wasn’t any plot. The descriptions, timings and speech were all over the place. It feels like this novella was written over a long weekend without proofreading or peer reviews.

I really didn't enjoy this. The MMC comes off as really rapey, the FMCs backstory is confused and her magic doesn't make sense, and the sex was too weird and not sexy. I'm not a big spit girly, so some of the scenes almost made me gag. Really not for me.

-5/5 🌶️

FIRST OF ALL, DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU DO NOT LIKE HAVING LIPS/TONGUE NEAR YOUR EYES.

With that out of the way, FUCK THIS BOOK. I don't usually use such strong language when I dislike books but there was way too much about this book that I hated hated hated. Too much of this book rolled my stomach wrongly, I actually had to gag a few times, and I take back what I said about the last MMC being my least favourite.

Sepher is THE WORST MMC I have had the displeasure of reading. He is a bully and manipulator, and the book confirms this multiple times; him commanding her to just give him her 'water' when she points out that she needs to give it willingly, him bodying her in the bathtub and essentially pining her to force her to agree to fucking him because he is 'done with the teasing', "Sepher will get his way once again", him FORCING HER PREGNANT AND THEN LYING THAT HE DID SO. He is the creepiest, most pig-headed MMC I have ever come across.

Grace was honestly just a body. She felt like a doll with no personality whose entire purpose was just to be fucked and controlled by this arsehole of a demon. I cannot say much about her other than WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU LET SOMEONE YOU DO NOT KNOW LICK AND SUCK ON YOUR EYEBALLS YOU FUCKING WEIRDO.

Spoilers/Triggers ahead:
Now the smut. I have never physically felt my clit try to force its way back inside my body but thanks to the smut in this book, I now know what that feels like. We start with Sepher licking her eyeball and then closing his mouth around her entire eye to suck on it that doesn't get any better during this scene because later he runs his tongue over her eyelashes because he likes the feel of them scratching his tongue. None of this gets better in the slightest. But, hold up, the worst is yet to come. The last smut scene we read is very S/A coded, especially since Sepher admits in his POV that he is willingly impregnating Grace without her consent or knowldege then denys that this was his plan when he mentions it. (She then, somehow, gives 'birth' a few hours later.)

I thought with the epilogue we would get something to tie everything off, but instead we get a 5 YEAR TIME SKIP where she has given Sepher hundreds of babies who are only now just meeting HER parents, and they are only just finding out about it now. FIVE YEARS LATER. And are somehow cool as fuck over this all.

I wish I could remove this book from my brain. It has, singlehandedly, made me never want to pick up another book by this author.

🖤 “You are the only offering I want, Grace.”
~~~
Grace is a strong, resilient and fiercely independent woman. And she’s very caring and compassionate, too. She’s a wonderful woman and I really liked her.
And then, there’s Sepher - the demonic merman Duke of Hell! He is dangerous, cocky, possessive and obsessive. And he’s quite mischievous, determined and charming, too. Sepher is definitely not a good guy and, yet, I liked him nonetheless.
I loved everything that happened between Grace and Sepher! Grace had never had any intentions of summoning a demon, especially a Duke of Hell, but here she was - in her parent’s summer house with a demonic merman on her hands… And unfortunately for her, Sepher had no intentions of going back to Hell without first having a taste of her. I really liked Grace and Sepher together! Their chemistry was off-the-charts and I loved all their interactions - the tension, the bargaining and the bickering. Even more, I really liked how well they fit together. And when they gave into the undeniable attraction, the passionate moments they shared were smoking hot and I couldn’t get enough of all the naughty delight. Grace and Sepher were definitely a match made in… hell, and deserved to find happiness and love together.
Overall, Oops! I Summoned A Demonic Merman is a quick, fun and naughty story and I enjoyed every page of it!
I loved the premise and most of the story, the ending lost it the 5th star ;)
Grace was a witch terrified of her own power, and after accidentally using it years earlier, she never used it again. Her parents asked her for help cleaning their lake house after a local water-witches coven stayed there. Trying to clean a summoning circle the assholes painted on the master bedroom's carpet, she accidentally summoned Sepher.
Sepher was a Duke of Hell, a demon merman who loved solitude and never sought company in Hell. The only other person he sometimes met with was his sister, but he couldn't stand her and hadn't seen her in a long time. He was surprised to be summoned, but his mischievous nature and curiosity about the pretty witch made him tease and play with her. The longer he stayed in her presence, the more he wanted to keep her for himself.
It was a hot and steamy story, and I liked both characters, but the ending wasn't my favorite. I also was a bit miffed that a powerful demon and a pretty powerful, if inexperienced, witch didn't find a way for him to transform, even temporarily, into a landwalking form.
Grace was only trying to clean up her parent's rental when she triggered the summoning circle left behind by the last renters and suddenly she has a roomful of merman. Demonic merman, so be specific. Sepher isn't thrilled to have been summoned, but he's also pretty darn intrigued by the human with the tasty tears and sexy body.
So he does what any self-respecting demon would do and makes a deal with Grace. And in typical demonic fashion, he makes sure the terms are in his favor. To be fair, why should be give up the tasty human treat now that he's found her?
On Grace's end, she's understandably confused on how she accidentally summoned a demonic merman. While she has magic, she shies away from using it after a bad incident years ago and she doesn't quite know what triggers her abilities. Turns out a sexy demon in the bathtub is the answer.
A grumpy demon who is about to find his match in the human realm, a lady who doesn't fit in until she does, and a watery hellscape that's perfect for raising little demonic merkids. Grace and Sepher are worlds apart, but they work!
2.75 ahhhh...Naomi Lucas, the QUEEN of making super weird shit, spicy. This one was so/so for me. It dragged on (the carpet) a little too long. I was also just overall unsatisfied? that they had to exist in separate worlds and she was never around for all the spawn-that made me sad for her. I felt like she never found happiness or availed her loneliness....just occasionally got to go to the watery hell to be with him. How very Hades and Persephone!
Side notes: she has like wicked awesome sex magic or some such thing? Although it doesn't do her much good other than zap her lover....lame. Also he is like the "Duke of hell" and she still has to stay living in a crappy apartment!? I mean what good is hooking up with a merdemon and having his babies if you gotta live separate in a fking apartment? This irritates me still.
Either way, definitely a Naomi Lucas book. If you know, you know.
Tropes: Paranormal Fantasy Monster Romance, Forced Proximity, Insta Lust, Unexpected Pregnancy, Dual POV
This was the third novella in the Witches Love Monsters romance standalone series, and it was by far my least favorite of them all. I mean, what truly was this? I think 3 stars is generous, but that’s mostly because I finished it quickly and the spice was pretty good. The story takes place over the course of basically 24 hours. I honestly didn’t even understand how our FMC summoned this merman in the first place, why she was sneezing so much, or why he was obsessed with licking her tears (I mean, okay, I get it because it’s water… but still).
The best part of the book was picturing him trying to move around her house without being noticed. Then there’s the whole pregnancy thing—by the end of the book, you find out they’ve had hundreds of babies. It’s just all a little weird. I will say, though, the spice was definitely spicy.
Overall, this fell so flat for me, and I don’t even know what else to say about it.
Is the plot in the room with us? Because the spice is standing in the doorway.
I picked this up for the title alone and honestly that was the most entertaining part of the entire experience. Oops! I Summoned a Demonic Merman promised chaotic fun and delivered… absolutely none of it.
For 156 pages it somehow felt like nothing was actually happening aside from the spicy scenes, and even those weren’t enough to carry it. The writing is clunky, the dialogue reads like it’s never been spoken out loud, and every interaction feels stiff and unnatural.
There’s technically a plot, but it’s giving La Croix. A faint suggestion of something that never actually materializes. The ghost of a plot.
If you’re looking for anything beyond a mildly amusing title, this isn’t it.
I wanted to enjoy this more
So I love mermen and the idea of a dark merman ever more, but this book just wasn't right for me. I felt like I spent more time reeling from sudden changes in scenery or plot points than I did enjoying it. While I do know that this is a novella and not a full length book, the whole thing felt really messy. I feel like of just a bit more time was put into everything, the book could've been a lot better. Even the sex scenes felt rushed and half-cocked. I'm sorry if this review upsets anyone. It is just my option. Other people may absolutely love it.
He says she is bound to him now and when she dies he will own her soul.
He lives in Hell permanently but she can visit and he can visit her on Earth. They have hundreds of kids, because she gives birth to an egg sack with many kids each time she gets pregnant.
I like his downstairs which had a few small tentacles in addition to his main shaft.
I would have preferred just a merman story.
cute and smutty
I liked it! I’m a sucker for mermaids and when you add in a demon and a witch .. well that makes it even better
Wold building is good and there’s surprisingly a good amount of detail considering it’s a short read
I do wonder how Grace can bounce back and forth between hell and earth … and still maintain a relationship with Zepher but I guess that’s up to the reader to interpret and fill in the holes lol
Let me just first say that I love a series that has stand alone books. It's nice to pick a book out of order that you really want to read first like this one. I was so excited when I saw Naomi Lucas post this on her IG and I absolutely love the majority of her books especially the Naga Brides series. However, this book was just okay to me. I personally didn't like the MFC especially about her past (yuck!).
I had to fight to finish this. The kids thing was too much. The lack of proper living situation was shit considering they were both supposed to be extremely powerful. The plot was just kinda not there. The family dynamic was weird and hard to understand. Idk the whole thing just felt off. The smut was also not very inspiring considering he had extra gear and barely even used it.
Not my favorite throughout but definitely love the ending.
I actually enjoyed the little back story of Grace and the description of Sepher in terms of personality and appearance but there was A LOT of red flag.
I’m interested in Sepher’s sister and her story a little more then Grace and Sepher’s love story tbh 😂
Oh, what a wonderful read! I would have loved a little more, especially to dive deeper into Grace and Sepher’s relationship and see what their future looks like, but I’m still completely satisfied. This book was funny, charming, and undeniably hot (as always with Naomi Lucas). A delightful, quick read that left me smiling and wanting more.
I liked the vibes, the lust and the unhinged tone, but I did miss some more HEA moments. I wanted an explanation for lifespans, where do they live, can he go on land, can she be underwater, what happens when she dies and he gets her soul? WTF are those kids lol. But it was a good horny moment and I’m not too mad about it.
I really liked this one. I have always been fascinated by merpeople. I used to live in the water as a kid. Lakes, rivers, or pools it didn't matter I was almost always swimming. I loved watching Grace and Sepher learn each other. The end was really cute and funny. I will be reading more if this author I assure you.
