Texas Forever

You Can't Miss What You've Never Had

That's the philosophy Claire Hannaford always followed. Left in a basket shortly after her birth, Claire's never had a family - and she doesn't think she needs one. Being on her own means she's free to take nursing assignments wherever and whenever she wants.

Her latest assignment brings her to the Parker Ranch to care for ailing Mae Parker, the clan's formidable matriarch. Claire's never seen a family like this one. They all seem to be strong-willed and no-nonsense. And they don't exactly approve of Claire - since Mae went behind their backs to hire her. But one member of the extended family, Tanner - as much an outsider as Claire - stands out.

Before long, Tanner and the rest of the Parkers have Claire wondering if she's been lying to herself all these years.

For the Love of Texas is not a book I don't usually pick up and read Harlequin books if I have others to choose from, but at this time, it was the ONLY one I had to chose from when I went on vacation and finished the books I had brought, so...I read it. I was pretty shocked to find I enjoyed reading it.
The main Character, Claire, is a nurse that does home health care, wherever the job takes her. She doesn't have a family, and as she puts it 'you can't miss what you've never had', and she's convinced herself he doesn't need or want one.
When she takes a job at the Parker Ranch caring for the family matriarch, Mae Parker, she's planning on doing what she's always done before: Don't get attached to the patient, or their family. But, she didn't expect that Mae had other plans for her!
This is a story of family in the truest sense, and proves that you don't have to share blood to be family.
Ginger Chamebers did an excellent job of creating characters that you felt you've known for years. You knew their joys, and pain. Your heart broke when the characters cried, and you shouted in joy when the characters found their true path in life. You found yourself friends with these fictitional characters, and it's proof of a good author.
One of the most heart warming books I've read in a very long time. I definitely would recommend reading it if you want a good cry and a story to show the good side of human nature.

I gave up the book when I reached Chapter 6. It is one of the slowest book I have ever read. The first 6 chapters had no action whatsoever except a bunch of relatives of 92 year old head of Parker Family, Miss Mae behaving like boors and making the nurse who is there to help their old relative. There is just one single guy who is a software entrepreneur who sold his startup and lost his biz partner to heart attack at the age of 36 and was blamed by his widow. There is no chemistry and definitely no color to both the nurse or the retired entrepreneur who are probably the protagonists. Since one of her previous book in the series was interesting I thought of reading it but the previously interesting characters now just come across as idiots.
Some wit, humor, sentiment or plot could have easily saved this story and completed it with a series of epilogues instead. Worse still the minutiae of the week or so is described in excruciating detail that the story dragged rather than uplifted.

ALOT of characters!
Other than getting a bit confused about who all the parkers are, it's a sweet story.

This seems to be the last book in a series (most are out of print now). I have read one of the other books in the series and I am not sure how well I would have followed this one without having read it. Though that one was in the middle too and was fine. Anyway, this was a good read, though a bit on the light side for romance. Much of it focused on the family and tying up lose ends. It seemed to be the resolution of a good series. Claire is a great character who has never had a family to call her own - unlike the Parkers who have more than they know what to do with. Tanner has never really felt a part of the Parkers and is lost now with the pain of his best friends' death. It was a good book and I'm sure was a nice ending to the series, but it didn't seem like much of a romance on its own.

I'm not orphaned, both parents are hale and hearty, but I might as well have been as I grew up with an orphaned heart from a childhood devoid of parental affection. So when I read this book... it stripped me bare. I struggled with Claire, I understood her fears. I cried, I laughed. You can pick this book apart, it's certainly not perfect. But if you have a heart like mine, you'll resonate with Ms. Mae and Claire in their struggle to love and be loved. This book is just as much about the one as the other. It took me a year to gather my thoughts to leave a review. Sometimes, some books take you by surprise.
I have not read any of the other books in this West Texans series.
