By far the weirdest book I've read all year! Either the author needs to book an urgent doctor's appointment for a dementia assessment, or this was written by AI. Since I can't seem to find much info about the author, I think I have my answer. The writing was engaging and interesting, but there were so many plot holes and direct contradictions that I felt like the book was gaslighting me. And since you know I'd never say that without receipts:
Kaelen, the FMC, meets a character named Lord Vane (she somehow knows his name without it being stated by anyone) on page 20: “That one.” Vane’s voice cuts through the hall. but then says on page 65: "They’re standing in a doorway twenty feet down the corridor. Sylara, rigid, her mask firmly in place. And facing her, [Lord Vane],a fae lord I’ve never seen before.
The fae queen Sylara knows Kaelen's full name without asking for it once.
Kaelen's just like Grandpa, who swears he isn't napping even when he's clearly napping: Sleep comes eventually. (p. 122) or wait maybe not: I can’t sleep. (p. 123).
After Kaelen becomes the queen consort, she picks out a dress for a special event: I grab the nearest dress, a slightly less terrifying one in deep charcoal. (p. 164). But then she also has one custom made “Well.” I clear my throat. “I guess it’s fine.” “Fine?” One of the dressmakers sounds personally insulted. “It’s a masterpiece of…” (p. 169) instead, just 5 pages later. Why? No one knows
I don't even know what you call this inconsistency: after an attack, Kaelen passes out and awakens in the queen's bed: I wake up in her bed. (p. 210) definitely not in the infirmary: "The healers wanted to take you to the infirmary. I refused.”(p. 210). Except that she was in the infirmary after all????? Sylara led me here after I woke. Said she needed air. Said the infirmary smelled like death and she couldn’t think with all those people looking at her, wanting answers she didn’t have.(p. 214)
Sylara confesses that the last time she had sex was “The last time I let anyone this close was…” “When?” “Before my parents died.” THEY DIED WHEN SHE WAS 12
And lastly, but probably my personal favourite: “I love you.” The words spill out, unbidden. “I love you, I love you, I—” She kisses me to swallow the rest. (p. 298). BUT WAIT... She almost smiles. “I love you.” The words hit me like a physical blow. Three words. Just three words, and my whole chest caves in. She’s never said it before. Neither have I. (p. 303).
That doesn't even take into account my irritation over a character named Moren that I'm supposed to remember is different than the character named Meren. Or the zillion other weird things that happened. I've never read a book with so many strange errors. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

What I can say is that this was a very formulaic story. There are multiple contradictions and story jumps. I hope if this is an an actual author, that next time they have beta readers to help them with these errors and inconsistencies.
That being said, this is a romantasy that involves a fae vs human world dynamic. There is a plague spreading across the land that is destroying and mutating everything in its wake. Kaelan is a human null who can negate fae magic and is picked for a hunger games style selection from the sewers. She's saved by the fae queenfrom that contest.
I don't want to give too much away.
Did I enjoy this book, it was ok, not great or good, just fair. Would I rate this higher if I knew this was a new indie author, no. I do believe that the inconsistencies and holes were a deal breaker for me.
Tropes and triggers: Found Family, soul mates, touch her and die, class warfare, ancient magic, enemies to lovers generational trauma

I loved the magic concepts. Particularly the idea of Nulls and their ability to undo magic. Some of the characters could have used more development, and the quality of the writing wasn’t great. For example using brackets while a character is talking.
Overall the book was good and has the potential to be great with more advanced writing.

All in all I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Extremely well put together, great plot. nice and unique events.
However, I found a lot of the description was lacking and seemed repetitive.
I would also say some scenes in the book were written almost in a list. other than those little things that need work on, I really enjoyed it and love the cover of the book too.

Good story.
I wanted to give this 4 stars because the story is good but the plot has issues. There are several plot holes. Someone did something and they learn about it twice. You learn someone's name 3 times becuase you haven't learnt it yet, you tell someone you love them, then tell them you love them again, for the first time. Honestly I wondered a lot if the author re-read their work to check for this. Rawer was overused and annoying, while grammatically correct it just seems wrong somehow and unnecessary to repeat 3 times.
Overall the story was good and while the author tried to give characters emotional depth sometimes this felt a bit flat.

It's a long war between humans and fae. But there is a blight that is threatening to take over and now they might have to work together.
I love both FMCs. They're both sassy in their own ways.
There's a little bit of spice.
It's an adventure in grief and guilt and learning to fight together and make change for good!!

Why was this so good….? My first ever FF romance and I think I may have a new trope to read. I love how the frozen heart melts and the high walls crumbling. This was definitely worth the read.

Absolutely loved this book! wish i could read it for the first time again. Had to force myself to put it down as not to finish it too quick. Still a bit salty it’s finished ☺️
