The Last Summer of Childhood
A gem on the Yasnaya Polyana 2026 longlist. Australian Robbie Arnott is young but well-known in his homeland; his novel "Fire" is even included in school curricula. "Limberlost" is the story of one summer in the mid-1940s, woven into a whole life. For us, Tasmania is an exotic land of the antipodes, but Ned's family lives and works on the Limberlost apple farm, and for them, it's everyday life. After his mother's death and the mobilization of his older brothers, only half of the large family remains: his father, his older sister, the horsewoman Maggie, and the teenager Ned. He dreams of his own boat to save up for it, hunts rabbits, and sells their pelts to a tanner.
These cute little animals are an Australian scourge, in case you weren't aware – brought here by settlers and with no natural enemies, they have multiplied in numbers threatening the ecosystem. They take particular pleasure in destroying vegetable gardens and gnawing the bark of young apple trees. When the choice is between the survival of your family or the rodent pests, you choose yourself and your conscience doesn't bother you. Until the day a quoll gets caught in a rabbit trap. The quoll, the size of a cat, occupies the same ecological niche, only it's a truly wild creature (from the wild forest) and you can't expect it to purr, but it can scream loudly. So that's who's been stealing eggs from the chicken coop! The animal has a damaged paw, it's in pain, and Ned knows for sure that he can't finish it off, storing it in a box in the back shed for now. He secretly feeds it rabbit meat, hoping the wound will heal, cleaning the box once a week, cautiously transferring the predator to another, smaller one.

No one knew about the marten until the day it bit the boy while he was grooming him. He shook the little toothy creature off his hand, and the marten began screeching. Tilly, the sister of his friend Cricket, was nearby from the neighboring farm and peeked in at the noise. The girl was walking around with a gun, keeping an eye out for the hawk that was stealing their chickens. Ned thought she'd shoot the marten, but it turned out differently. Then Ned's mare went lame, and Maggie yelled at dinner that he was an irresponsible slob, not looking after the horse, and that she must have fallen into one of his rabbit traps! He took her to the vet, strapping the crate with the marten to his saddle—she was completely weakened, ready to give up everything she'd saved for a boat.
The synopsis says nothing happens, but in reality, the book is chock-full of action. It's about daily farm labor under threat of bank repossession. A wild animal that suddenly becomes your headache, and your first barter labor contract with an adult. The sour realization of how little you have, the sweetness of a treasure acquired through your own labor and a bit of luck. And the bitterness of losing something that's no longer yours. It's about a whole happy life with the best woman in the world, and the loss of a loved one for which you unconsciously blame yourself, your desire for a better future for you, her, and your children. And children who won't say "thank you" when they grow up, but will, from the heights of arrogant youthful omniscience, reproach you for something that's completely innocent.
And it's about an unimaginable sense of nature, into which the magic of the text and Daria Raskova's translation immerse you, even though I consider myself a child of the asphalt. Limberlost is a good story, full of life, and uses simple language that delivers physical, physiological pleasure. Books like this are worth reading on the awards lists, and thanks to the Kazakh magazine Foliant, we now have that.

После маминой смерти и мобилизации старших братьев, от большой семьи осталась половина: отец, старшая сестра лошадница Мэгги и подросток Нед. Он мечтает о своей лодке, чтобы скопить на нее, охотится на кроликов, шкурки сдает кожевнику.
Милые зверьки австралийское бедствие, если вы не в курсе - завезенные сюда поселенцами и не имеющие естественных врагов, расплодились в количествах, угрожающих экосистеме. С особым удовольствием уничтожают огороды, глодают кору молодых яблоневых деревьев. Когда выбор между выживанием твоей семьи или грызунов-вредителей, выбираешь себя и совесть не мучает. До дня, когда в кроличий капкан попадает кволл. Сумчатая куница, размером с кошку, занимает ту же экологическую нишу, только это по-настоящему дикая тварь (из дикого леса) и мурчанья от нее ждать не стоит, зато кричать умеет громко. Так вот кто таскал яйца из курятника! У зверя повреждена лапа, ему больно, и Нед точно знает. что не может добить, помещая пока в дальнем сарае, в ящике. Тайно кормит крольчатиной, надеясь, что рана заживет, раз в неделю чистит ящик, с опаской переваливая хищницу в другой, поменьше.

Тилли с соседней фермы, сестренка его друга Сверчка, была поблизости и заглянула на шум. Девочка всюду ходила с ружьем - высматривала ястреба, таскавшего их цыплят. Нед подумал, что она пристрелит куницу, но вышло иначе. А потом захромала кобыла Неда и Мэгги кричала за обедом, что он безответственный лентяй, не следит за лошадью, небось в один из его кроличьих капканов и попала! И он повел ту к ветеринару, приторочив к седлу ящик с куницей - та совсем ослабела, готовясь отдать все, скопленное на лодку.
Аннотация говорит, что ничего не происходит, но на деле книга переполнена событиями. В ней ежедневный труд на ферме под угрозой банковской конфискации. Дикий зверь, внезапно ставший твоей головной болью, и первый в жизни бартерный трудовой договор, заключенный со взрослым человеком. Кислота осознания малости имеющегося у тебя, сладость, обретенного своими трудами с толикой удачи, сокровища. И горечь потери уже даже переставшего быть твоим. В ней целая счастливая жизнь с лучшей женщиной на свете и потеря любимой, в которой бессознательно винишь себя, свое стремление к лучшему для вас с ней и ваших детей будущему. И дети, которые не скажут "Спасибо", выросши, но попрекнут с высот заносчивого юношеского всезнания тем, в чем ты уж никак не виноват.
И в ней немыслимое какое-то ощущение природы, в которое, числящую себя дитем асфальта, окунают тебя с головой магия текста и перевод Дарьи Расковой. В "Лимберлосте" хорошая история и живая жизнь, и простой язык, который дарит удовольствие на физическом, физиологическом уровне. Ради таких книг стоит читать премиальные списки, и спасибо казахстанскому "Фолианту", теперь это у нас есть.
